View Full Version : Purging of Olympia - Heresy Era Iron Warriors

27-01-2010, 11:24
How do,

so over on TheGreatCrusade Heresy forums i've join their competition to paint an army over the next year or so, but thought some of the folks over on Warseer might enjoy them aswell, so here they are.

The army is themed around the Purging of the Iron Warriors own homeworld at the behest of Horus, signalling the Legion's fall into the thrall of Chaos.

So not a good time for a fairly ruthless legion. Good times.

Anyway, some of the pics from the works so far then

the command squad that were 76% done at that point, they now just need base rims painting and their done.

WiP's of the Warleader of the 12th Grand Company

again, things have changed on him, the shield is now replaced with something bigger, and the shoulder pads exchanged for the brazier from the corpse cart. He needs greenstuffing now, so when done i'll post another pic prior to painting.

and last but not least, 'Mr Plow', inspired by the day of the dead and apparantly 'soylent green'. The first of two for the army, with the second on the workbench awaiting the 'rubble' for the dozer blade.

Pretty nice minis you got there mate. I like the metallics, they look battered but still quite functionnal. Did you paint them all with a brush or did you use airbrush, Armypainter metal primer, something else?

One thing I think is missing though: danger stripes! (or is it hazard....) This could help your model to pop out a little bit more and keep them with the fluff. Keep them coming!

27-01-2010, 17:31
I have to agree, the metallic paint is very good.

and Mr. Plow is now one of my most favorite things. cannot wait to see him painted up

27-01-2010, 19:28

The metallics are pretty easy actually,

Black undercoat> boltgun basecoat> Devlan Wash> Chainmail Drybrush>
Very, very watered down wash of Tamiya orange clear, and some thinned tamiya clear blue in sparse amounts.

And thats pretty much it.

Going to get on with Mr Nudge, the vindicator no2 tonight, if i've got any putty left, otherwise it'll have to wait til tomorrow

Very cool look to them, the armour looks very nice. Mr Plow is sick!!! I love it!

29-01-2010, 22:42
Vindicator looks good. Looking forward to seeing what it looks like when finished.

29-01-2010, 22:49
well, not completely finished, but the siege shields and 'rubble' are getting there

im just not sure on the flesh of the bodies. whether to keep the bone colour, or go for a more fleshy colour

any thoughts?

Very nice work on the vindicators.

I would say keep them Pale-to-Greyish as im sure they are dead and arent "fresh" enough to have some living color to their skin.

Great look to those vindi's!

30-01-2010, 16:51
Those vindi's are slightly disturbing, but very well done!
Great idea, if not a bit grim.

Look forward to seeing how this log progresses.

That rubble is glorious, in a chaotic sense...

Wow, great iron warriors!
Those vindicators are awesomely creepy, I might have to steal that idea for mine.

Looking forward to see what's next.

31-01-2010, 04:23
I might have to borrow the siege shield idea. It looks great. I can't help but think "Make way pedestrians" when I see them.

31-01-2010, 09:16
I laughed at those vindicator's rubble piles..classic :) Great work.

I do like those marine helmets with the vented faceplates. Nice metal work you've done, keep it up. Looking forward to seeing more.

Mix it up, do the odd one or two in each pile a different colour.

Awsome work mate! The vindicators look great.

31-01-2010, 20:33

couple more pics for people, colours are abit off because of the time of day i took them, but still, tis progress atleast.

Also took the advice and added abit more colour to the bodies, aswell as changing the colour of the rubble to further bring out the unfortunates trapped within.

31-01-2010, 20:49
wow! :D
those vindicators are looking awesome, even more so now with the more varied colour of the corpses skin! mmm, dead bodies!

31-01-2010, 20:51
cheers :)

have realised however i havent photo'd the other dozer, which after some very lucky accidental positioning, looks like theres one very unfortunate civilian in there, clasping at the demolisher cannon to try and get out. I'll grab photo's tomorrow of the poor sod.

Awesome idea for the plows, truly awesome :D

01-02-2010, 21:12
cheers for the support folks, am keyed up and full of keen to continue.

so last nights project whilst watching the Royal Rumble herealed the following that i photographed this morning

Thunderstike 'Paracles' and Techmarine Uransius.

Painting will start when i can be bothered, lol

Great work on the vindicators and this beast is looking promising!

01-02-2010, 21:34
Nice and gruesome vindicator dozer blades, never seen that done before but such an obvious idea!

02-02-2010, 09:53
Yep that varied skin and rubble colours look so much better.

I realised when putting my thunderfire cannon together that it fitted exactly into a razorback turret hole! :D

02-02-2010, 10:22
Have to say that you've got one of the best metal paint style's i've seen in a long time. Usually i cringe when i first look at a new Iron Warriors log, but these are outstanding!! Keep it up matey! :D

Looking great, just one question, What's with the GW banners in the BG, do u work at a GW store????

Anywhos, If ur using a Thunderfire cannon on a rhino, i assume it's some kind of Imperial Armour vehicle? Idk, What are the rules on that thing?

I'm just curious.

04-02-2010, 19:27
Bit more progress, as the Heavier Artillary gets a slap of paint, or lack of it...

Also a couple of pics of the finished command squad and the start I made on the Tech Marine

That is a great fit on top. I know they are iron warriors but I think the tanks need something else to break up the silver. Not sure though.

Looks good!

Lookin good so far. How did you do the paint on the tanks? I really like the mottled look.

06-02-2010, 17:12
Now this might be the beginning of an awesome log! Definitely keeping an eye on this, great stuff so far.

06-02-2010, 20:32
Cheers for the comments guys, am enjoying this alot.

well I broke, and got myself a third Vindicator today and a third corpse cart to make the rubble. Ahhh well.

Also listened to the Raven's flight cd, and found out the Iron Warrior detachment is my planned army, almost exactly, so looking at something like

Master in Termie Armour
Command Squad in Razorback

4x 10 Tac's in Rhino's
10 Assault Marines in a Rhino
10 Sternguard in a Rhino
5 Assault Terminators in a Landraider Prometheus
3x Vindicator
3x Thunderstrike
2x Predator with AC/LC

Which gives me 2800 points roughly, so a few points left to play with.

That'll keep me going for the next 4 weeks methinks

Thanx man, I'll have to chech it out.

10-02-2010, 00:06
Less chatter an more Iron Warriors please. *i was hoping the new posts would include some new pictures.

The latest additions are looking good hermanesq. and seeing that Techmarine makes me want one as well. hope to see its finished look soon.

10-02-2010, 15:04
ok, so after a few days off the project to recharge the batteries, i come back with a conumdrum for people.

Newest vehicle for the Iron Warriors is a Heavy Flamer armed Razorback. Probably not an optimal choice for marines, but I thought the idea would look cool, from the assorted bits i've got lying around.

Now the Razorback option is for a twin linked heavy flamer, but i've done this with the mock up

Now does that look ok as is, or would it look better with two Flamestorm cannons mounted on it, whatcha think people?

11-02-2010, 01:13
The way you have the flamer looks really good. I think 2 flamestorm cannons would look alittle over the top for only representing a twinlinked heavy flamer.

Max props on the look of the rest of your army btw. Would you mind showing us how you did your metal to make it looks so good?
