Hi folks,

After being inspired by Bigred's Death Guard over at Bell of Lost Souls a year or so ago, I have finally gotten around to starting my own heresy-era Death Guard army.

Right now, I only have a single Tactical Squad and an Assault Squad...and I'm still waiting on some ordered bitz, but I have access to several older models and am trying to figure out what shape this army will eventually take.

Unfortunately, I'm splitting my time between this and my rather large chaos force, so it will be slow going.

Anyway, here are a some pics. First up is the tactical squad I have mixed helmets, studded shoulder pads, and some older bolters in there. Trying to stay with the strapped torsos and leg greave lowers. I plan on using mini beads to add some studs to some of the legs. Still missing a few heads and shoulder pads.

Next is my converted Missile Launcher to Autocannon Marine. Second is a pic of my first paint test.

And finally, a paint test of a single Death Guard Marine waiting for some transfers to be applied.

Yay! I love DG and Pre-heresy/heresy era is always a cool modeling project. The test marine looks good but the white could be cleaner, same with the green on the backpack. Maybe use a foundation colour before the final colour?

Are you going to make the backpacks look pre-heresy as well?

If you need ideas this (http://z15.invisionfree.com/The_Great_Crusade/index.php?showforum=30) could help.

Good luck with the project mate!

Thanks skylord!

I used a couple of hand applied undercoats of black, washed over by a mix of Devlan Mud and a tad of Badab black....then drybrushed a couple of light coats of white back over that....

Thing is, I actually liked the model looking a bit dirtier than the final turned out...In other words, my opinion was that the final model looked 'too clean', and I wished I hadn't added so much white. :)

Scanning through that link, I couldn't find the info on the backpacks. Am I just blind? I would love to see some kind of tutorial on that.

Good luck with the project mate!
Thanks, I loathe painting miniatures, but have wanted to do heresy era models for a couple of years now, especially the Death Guard, so I am crossing my fingers that I will have the tenacity to see it through to a finished army.

Ah sorry, the link was just info on pre-heresy DG.

For backpacks look at this. (http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2009/12/space-marine-backpack-conversion.html) Some people also do the vents facing upwards as well.

(The tutorial I was gonna post has had the pictures removed!)

Awesome. Thanks for the link.

Definitely going to have to add some of those in.

Thanks guys.

I can't take credit for the Autocannon, I stole the idea from Bigred on Bell of Lost Souls, but I am pleased with how well it turned out.

I worked on a couple of backpack conversions tonight.

The backpack on the left Marine is all plastic. The one on the Company Champion model on the right has vmetal pods cut off of an old metal Marine backpack.

They were primed white previously. I need to finish stripping paint off of the Company Champion for use with the Death Guard.

The backpacks look good, they give the model a little bit more of that 'pre-heresy' feel.

I would not blackline white. Use another color.. brown or green. Black is too much.

Looks good,
Instead of black how about a grey?

I finished out a 5 man Assault squad today, but I'm planning on expanding it to 10 man before everything is said and done:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/JHaines/DSC00137.jpg

I started to retro-fit a Razorback for the command squad to take it back in time:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/JHaines/DSC00136.jpg

Finished paint stripping and assembling some of the command squad and tactical squad troops:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/JHaines/DSC00140.jpg

Acquired an old-style Vindicator:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/JHaines/DSC00138.jpg

And finally, base-coated a Forge World Mk IV Venerable Dread:

Thanks all.

Skylord - I'm waiting on some ordered microbeads so that I can add my own shoulder pad and leg studs to various models to get more or a heresy look and feel. Have to wait on that before I start painting the troops...

So right now, I can work on the Dreadnought, but that's about it. Problem is, I am not sure what I want to do as far as paint scheme. I looked through the collected "Visions of the Heresy" art book, but didn't really get a good idea of the colors for Death Guard heresy-era dreads.

Any suggestions?

Hi!
Looks really great, I like your conversions very much, especially the auto cannon guy :)
I have a question for you you, where have you got these heresy age jet packs from? they look amazing.
Can't wait to see more minis painted!

Greetings,
Ostling

That is one great book! For the dread, not to much white, several tones of gray (maybe fading to white?) and go for quite a bit of metallics.

Thanks Ostling. They come from a company in Poland called Maxmini.

I cut the top fins off with an exacto knife, then filed down the rough portions and smoothed over the rest with Green Stuff.

Hope that helps.

Had a chance to do some actual painting tonight, so I worked on the Mk. IV Dreadnought. Did I mention how much I hate painting?

Anyway, here he is:

And one for comparison with the only other painted model in the army. :)

Last but not least, a base-coated and Devlan Mud washed Marine that shows my first attempt at adding my own studs to shoulder pads and legs:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/JHaines/DSC00147.jpg

This guy is what I consider fully "heresy'd out".

• Maximus-style head
• Cross cable Torso
• Greaved Legs
• Converted Backpack
• Shoulder and Leg studs
• Mk. II Bolter

Time for bed.

The dread looks really cool!

For this, check out The Great Crusade forum. They are dedicated to all things pre-heresy.

You're doing an EXCELLENT job!

Just a few little nitpicks...

1) First post, first pic - the sergeant has an Mk8 "Errant" torso. This didn't exist until WELL after the Heresy was over.
2) Your Standard Bearer has an Aquila torso...this was a big "no-no" until after the Heresy. Only the Emperor's Children Legion was allowed to wear the Aquila on their chestplates in the Heresy Era.
3) As has been pointed out, don't blackline - use a dark but not black color. Dark brown, dark green, or dark grey will all work better.

Other than that, good work!

Thanks for the comments Blue Orphen.

The Mk. 8 Errant armour didn't exist, but there are several pictures in the Heresy Visions book which show marine armor with that neck cowl...That's what I was trying to represent. I know the Errant armour is cutting edge in the 40k universe.

Yeah, the standard bearer was just an "as is" model from the Command squad. I have torsos that I can use to swap it out at some point. :)

As far as the Blacklining goes...I'm pretty much going directly off of Bigred's tutorial on Bell of Lost souls for his Death Guard because I love the look of them. That said, the blacklining is not how I normally roll either....but I like the final result. The stark contrast does make them look cartoonish though. I am using Micron pen for the detail in black....Is their any other company that makes really fine pens in gray color?

One more point: I also know I have some mixed in knee pad legs instead of greaves. I'm trying to limit those to Assault Troops / Devastators (and maybe command)...saying they have need for more flexible leg styles, so they get the 'latest and greatest'.

Pretty sweet army you have here. An seeing pre/heresy era one always made me think "their white armor is going to get real nasty soon".

I am looking forward to seeing those assualt marines painted up.

and its also cool to see another member from austin.

Ok, little update today. Finishing cutting the fins off of jump-packs to complete the 10-man Assault Squad, and started preliminary work on what I hope to become a Stormbird when everything is said and done based on BulldogUK's excellent work.

The top portion is a G.I. Joe SIGMA SIX Dragonhawk toy. The bottom is the center section of a Mechwarrior Dark Age Aurora Class Dropship. I picked them both up off of eBay in order to attempt to replicate something close to what BulldogUK did with his Stormbird build.

Finished modeling some additional stuff today.

First up, the heresy-era Terminators:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/JHaines/DSC00156.jpg

Next, a new/old Predator mix:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/JHaines/DSC00159.jpg

A second Autocannon conversion:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/JHaines/DSC00158.jpg

Finally finished up the Assault Squad:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/JHaines/DSC00160.jpg

And last, the converted Captain. Just have to remove the Aquila from the banner (already removed the double eagle collar piece).
