View Full Version : Battalion Boxes - The good and the bad.

After recently purchasing the Lizardmen Battalion i realised that, with a bit of conversion and tooling up characters, that a 2000pt army could be made or at least get a comfortable 1500 point list out of the box. Comparing this with the Bretonnian box and its pretty poor showing of only 800 points i wondered what other posters thought of the battalion boxes?

Forget the financial benefits, but which armies are you able to field a decent sized legal army out of a battalion box and which ones are poor in comparison?

The Wood Elf and Ogre battalions are both excellent, the Wood Elf one gives you enough pieces to build 20 Glade Guard (also good to build Waywatchers with), 5-6 Glade Riders or Wild Riders, 10 Dryads and then you still have enough leftovers to build 5-8 Nobles and Spellsingers, and some Branchwraiths.

The Ogre one gives you enough pieces to build either one big or two small Bull units, an Irongut unit, two Leadbelcher units and between 20-40 Gnoblars, and if you don't use all the Bull models you can build some characters from the leftovers.

Both battalions should provide over 1000 pts if you build some characters.

Most battalions, with enough converting and some putty, can get you a bunch of points. I just ordered two lizard boxes (they were my first army and I am just now interested in doing them again) and should be able to field well over 2k points. I also did the same 2 battalion purchase with my Dark Elves.

There are only a few that I would say are not worth it, being High elves and Brets. Buying a Knight themed army and only getting 8 knights is pretty lame, but if you wanted to go with a more peasant-ish theme it has its strong points. As for the elves... they need to give you 20 spears and 12 archers, then keep the bolt thrower and drop the Silver Helms and put in a chariot. As it is now it is not worth the cost. For 70 US I would think about it, but would still probably pass on it.

The WoC battalion is pretty good IMO.
20 Marauders
10 Warhounds
5 Chaos Knights
12 Chaos Warriors

It can also provide around 1k points with some converted characters.
Here's a sample army list:

*Exalted of Khorne, Axe of Khorne, Favour of the Gods, Bloodcurling Roar, Sheild
*Exalted of Khorne, Chaos Runesword, Stream of Corruption, Sheild

*I suggest converting these from Chaos Warriors with some parts from Chaos Knights

2x10 Marauders with Great Weapons, Mark of Khorne
10 Chaos Warriors, Full Command, Mark of Khorne, War Banner
2x5 Warhounds

5 Chaos Knights, Full Command, Mark of Khorne, Blasted Standard

This comes down to 1195pts.

I like the vamp one although it is not nessesarily the best
20 skelies
20 zombies
10 ghouls
corpse cart

buy two and you are set for 2000-2750
Edit: jsut in the way of core, yes you need aux troops and characters as well

Beautiful analysis! Points per dollar and actual value of models bought separately. Any chance you could add actual battalion box cost vs. actual cost analysis as well for sake of completeness?

Note that you get 40 Gnoblars in the OK battalion so it is by far the best deal. Plus with the price rises the value has increased as well.

I used the bull/irongut sprue gnobblars to make a unit of trappers.
Skaven i mad 30 plague monks and 6 censer bearer conversions, also converted 2 rat ogres and a tomb kings chariot into a hellpit abomination so there's alotta points available in that box.

I think most are about the same you just need to look at if you will use the units from them. 2 battalions gave me a nice start for most of my armies.

I think the battalions are a good deal for the most part.... even if I wouldnt go for some of the units in them.

About the only one I have a problem with really is the brettonians- I figure two sets of knights, one unit of spearmen or bowmen would be better.

Heh, the biggest complaint Ive heard though is that the HE one doesnt have enough silverhelms *sighs* but that boyos a bit touched... or it might be he fields 4 units of them every game.

I have always wanted to see something like this for all batallions.

You are absolutely correct on this. If half of the batallion you have no desire to put together why bother buying the batallion. There are perhaps one or two armies that I would put on this list personally.

The problem with the current Bretonnian battalion is that you only get one pegasus knight, meaning you need to either use it as a character or get two more to field a minimum sized unit.

The previous one was better, containing 3 pegasus knights, 8 ordinary knights, 16 men-at-arms and 16 archers.

I was going to correct you but my battalion box for ym dwarfs also only came with 24 warriors but the website now says 32 and also the picture shows 32. They must have increased it, which means......GW are saving us money

That would be good except there'll probably charge us more for less like they did with anything else they put to the 5 wide which was originally 4. :p

Real dwarf players of course will be still playing their dwarves 4 models wide in the 9th edition days, grumpling something about the silly new fads of the beardlings that rank their models 5 wide.

They are the prices you'd pay if you bought the boxes separately

They're not the battalion prices but how much it would cost to buy all the units individually.

I dunno, buying dwarves reminds me of the good old days when hotdogs came in packs 10 of and buns came in packs of 8.

I have to agree that the Wood Elf battalion is great for what you get!

Sadly I reckon the previous Bretonnian Battalion box was the better. 2 extra Pegasus Knights and 4 less Men-at-arms.
