The Vexus Crusade, Imperial Fists

Welcome ladies and gentlemen to yet another project log, this time taking the form of a homage to first founding chapter, the Imperial Fists. I am intending to paint up elements of the 5th, 1st and 10th companies with additions from the Armoury. The reason for using the 5th battle company is basically down to an aesthetic choice stemming from a predilection towards less vibrant colours, i know the darn marines are yellow!

Over the last couple of weeks i have been conversing, in considerable detail, with Eltanko to combine our efforts in re-creating armies of the Sons of Dorn, Eltanko tackling Black Templars and myself Imperial Fists. The plan is to combine our forces theme towards a singular campaign, having the background and story of our armies linked though combat in the name of the Emperor! To this end we have looked to creating a setting, scenario and documentation for a campaign/crusade to retake a system.

Eltanko's mighty Black Templar forces can be found here; The Vexus Crusade, Black Templars (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=247046)

Hopefully, we will progress at a reasonably similar pace, building and painting our armies in unison. For my part i am structuring my initial army around a 1500pts list, as follows:

- Captain Tiberius Vallarn (Pedro Kantor) - Pg4

- Sternguard Squad - Pg4
- Razorback - Pg7
- Venerable Dreadnought & Drop Pod - Pg5

- Tactical Squad - Pg2
- Rhino - Pg7
- Tactical Squad - Pg3
- Rhino - Pg7
- Scout Squad - Pg5

- Land Speeder Squadron - Pg11

- Predator Annihilator - Pg8
- Predator Annihilator - Pg8

Providing all goes well the army may well get far bigger than this initial 1500pts, to this end additional units/models completed will be listed below:

- Objective Marker - Pg9
- Tank Commander - Pg9

Furthermore i will endeavour to keep this list up to date with planned units:

- Assault Squad
- Devastator Squad
- Rhino
- Tactical Squad
- Rhino
- Captain Lysander
- Assault Terminator Squad
- Land Raider

On each of the models in the army, there will be displayed a campaign badge, this badge will be present on both Eltanko's Black Templar and my Imperial Fists. WIP shot of the campaign badge below:

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=82865&stc=1&d=1267178180

So without further designer ramblings here is the campaign background and introduction, co-written by Eltanko and Myself:

The Vexus Crusade, The Retribution of Sigismund

The Vexus system lies on the outer egde of the Segmentum Obscura. home to 11 habitable worlds of varying climates, most of which are agri-worlds, providing huge swathes of crops for the Imperium. Since the Horus Heresy the systems has been fought over and repeatedly lost and recaptured by the Imperium. The knowledge of its current invasion came about, after a reprasentative from Terra was sent to investigate multiple incidents of failure to pay Imperial Tithe taxes. Upon arrival in the system, the Cruiser Hope of Mordis sent down a transport ship to investigate. After 2 days, they had recieved no contact with the transport ship, and sent down a recconaissance force. Upon theire arrival they were met by heavy fire, and hostile forces overwhelmed them after landing. They had managed to send a vox message back to the Hope of Mordis, who relayed it via astropath, back to holy Terra. The High Lords of Terra then contacted the Imperial Fists Chapter Master with instructions to retake the system.

The capital world of Vexus IV is home to the Fortress of Sigismund, a master piece of defensive engineering, it was designed by Rogal Dorn during the great crusades before the Horus Heresy.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=82863&stc=1&d=1267177936

During the aftermath of the heresy the fortress was abandoned as all loyalist forces returned to Terra, since then the fortress, planet and system have been lost to the Imperium, overrun by heretics and traitors. In 981.M41 the Imperial Fists received word that the fortress was now in the hands of the Iron Warriors, this was a deep blasphemy that could not be tolerated, more troubling to the Son's of Dorn was that the vaults deep beneath the fortress are said to contain a great many relics of the chapter, including a library of fortress schematics designed by the primarch.

With much deliberation and preparation the Imperial Fists and Black Templar's proposed a crusade to retake the system primarily for honour to their Primarch, but as far as the High Lords of Terra are concerned, to restore the much needed food supply to the neighbouring Imperial territories. In this the combined might of the Sons of Dorn could secure the fortress of sigismund and the Primarch's relics.

Over the following months the task force was assembled, under the command of Commander Darnath Lysander, Captain of the Imperial Fist's 1st Company, a hero and a legend in his own right. Under his command the Imperial Fists committed the following forces:
- Commander Tiberius Vallarn, Captain or the 5th Battle Company, Master of the Siege.
- 106 Marines of the 5th Battle Company
- 20 Marines of the 1st Veteran Company
- 20 Initiates of the 10th Scout Company
- Armoury Support

Although having a little under 150 combatants the forces committed by the Imperial Fist force pale in comparison to those of the Black Templar's, which sanctioned by High Marshall Helbrecht and under the command of Castellan Morten Throgus, deployed the following:
- Chaplain De'ath Giltine
- 3 Entombed ones, Dreadnoughts
- 250 Marines + Neophytes of Throgus Crusade Company
- Armoury support

The Astartes force would be supported by the Imperial Fleet and over 610,000 guardsmen from the Vandoland Regiments, tasked with the occupation and permanent garrisoning of the system once back in Imperial control.

The overall campaign would be commanded by Captain Lysander overseeing the Fleet, the Imperial Guard Vandoland Regiments and the securing of the sector. Castellan Throgus would be tasked with securing the capital world, destroying all hostile forces and isolating the fortress isle, they would undoubtedly be dealing with the majority of the Chaos threat. Once isolated, the Throgus Campaign Company with the support of Captain Vallarn's 5th company would lay siege to and re-capture the fortress, culminating in the reclamation of the chapter Relics and their lost honour.

As Eltanko and I progress our project logs we will co-write further campaign information and add it in to the logs, sort of forming an Imperial Armour style story, so look out for that we hopefully have a few twists in store. Updates to follow in due course...

Tactical Marine Sergeant 001

This is the sergeant for my first tactical squad, really rather pleased with how he came out. Especially pleased with the tiny aquila on his collar and the campaign badge (of eltanko's devising).

Thanks everyone for all the support and the comments, i am really pleased with these initial 5 marines. Nice to have the support of a few familair faces (avatars) too! The campaign badge was Eltanko's idea and i think it works really rather nicely! Helps create cohesion between our two forces/chapters too!

More Fists! Great start, those shoulder pads look really good.

The metal shoulder pads from GW are ace, these later produced ones have really addressed any size/proportion issues. i have a couple of other types too which you'll see one my next batch of marines!

Those Imperial Fists are looking really good. Just bright enough on the yellow.

Thanks fella, i am really pleased with the yellow as i wanted to avoid bright marines, i felt a mroe mustardy colour was more suitbale and helps convey the grity/dark feel i think a 40k army should have. The painting recipe, if you will, is as follows:

- Chaos Black Spray Undercoat
- 2 very thin coats of Iyanden Darksun
- 1 thin coat of Bubonic Brown
- Devlan Mud Wash in all recesses and area of shadow
- a second thin coat of Bubonic Brown
- a wash/glaze of Golden Yellow, watered down to almost nothing, but just helps to lift the colour!

I have finished the remaining 5 marines from this tactical squad and I intended to photograph them Saturday and post there after. Also Eltanko and I will hopefully have finished the next campaign update in the near future too.

Tactical Marine 006

6th tactical marine armed with boltgun, note the the MkIV power armour torso and helmet, this suit dates back to before the Horus Heresy, the ID numbers on some of the components are known to have been [resent during the battle of Terra.

Also note the slight variation on the chapter symbol, this design is an older design used during the great crusade.

7th tactical marine of the 1st tactical squad, for this deployment the brother is wielding a missile launcher. Well spotted fella, i must have been looking at the wrong marine when writing the description! i have corrected accordingly! The wear and tear on the armour is simply Mythril Silver carefull lined onto raised edges and the like. I got the inspiration from Gorman and his Iron Hands log (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=232783), i've used the same technique on my deathwatch (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=242259)!

Next up i am planning on doing the second tactical squad, but am starting to gather the parts for my Captain conversion. I am being strict and getting my 20 tactical marines complete before tackling anything else!

1st Tactical Squad, 5th Battle Company, Imperial Fists Chapter

This tactical squad was one of six that served under the command of Captain Tiberius Vallarn,5th Company for the duration of the Vexus Crusade. Tactical squads making up the fighting back bone of the Imperial Fist's force.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=84150&stc=1&d=1268501820

This tactical squad displays an eclectic mix of power armour types, Some marines displaying elements of ancient MkIV battle plate. Other notable marks within this squad are MkV shoulder pouldrons, MkVI greaves and MkVI helmets. In most cases these suits have been mixed inwith the more frequently seen MkVII 'aquila-pattern' power armour suits. The sergeant appears to have MKVIII 'errant-pattern' chest armour, although closer inspection would reveal this to in fact be heavily modified MkVII armour.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=84151&stc=1&d=1268501820

The sergeant's back banner, is the standard for the 1st tactical squad of the 5th battle company. This banner is a relic of the chapter, dating back to 31st Millenium and the days of the Primarch. Note the legion number; VII displayed proudly as a focal point of the banner. The white stripe indicates that the banner is to be born by a veteran and the numerals within indicate the company; V and the squad number; 1.

The Imperial Aquilla is thought to be a later addition, as on the Emperor's Children were permitted to display the 2 headed eagle on their armour and colours.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=84152&stc=1&d=1268501834

This tactical squad carry standard wargear, inline with the teachings of the codex astartes. 7 of the battle brothers are armed with MkIV Ultra-Pattern Boltguns, these are the standard codex weapon for all marines within a Tactical squad. To further enable the squad's versatility 2 battle brothers have exchanged their boltguns for a MkIII Mars-Pattern Missile Launcher and a MkVI Nostra-Pattern Flamer respectively. Ther Sergeant is armed with standard issue Ultima-Pattern Bolt Pistol and Power Sword, the ultima-pattern power sword is often favoured by sergeants due to its light weight, durability and 'hand-and-a-half' grip affording the wielder more power and control.

Did you use white or silver to extreme highlight the marines? It isn't bad, it just struck me as... odd. Most of the time bright colors = dark wash, dark colors = light color extreme highlight.

Like I said, it's not bad, just a a little strange. Keep up the oddly well painted IF.

A slight miss understanding, possibly down to my photography, that is a myril silver damage line on the armour, all raised edges and areas of likely wear have been lined with it. Actually works really well, in the flesh you will. The idea is it show s chipped paint and scuffs, rather than a highlighted line exactly.

The model does have a high light, done in 1:1 of bubonic brown and skull white, this is then blended back into the armour with a glaze of watered down sunburst yellow.

Its a metal banner from the old Veterans that came in blisters a few years back, they don't sell them with the banners anymore thought.

Indeed, the bases are something i am yet to address, thus far they are simply scorched brown with a graveyard earth highlight. I am considering adding a flock, but am open to suggestions.

thanks very muchly, i am very pleased with the over all aesthetic. The idea was that they'd almost have a pre-heresy feel with out actually being a pre-heresy army, hense the inclusion of the older marks of power armour.

Indeed, a further highlight could really help, combining that with 'sheep's' suggestion of static grass this could be a real winner!

The Vexus Crusade, Campaign Progress Update:

Imperial Forces spearheaded by the Astartes fleet punch into the Vexus system, within a couple of weeks the systems orbital defences are destroyed and a number of the systems outer lying planets are brought back under Imperial control. The time line for the initial events for the campaign are as follows:

981 M41:

+0: Imperial representative arrives on Vexus IV, to investigate unpaid tithe taxes, after reports are sent back from the local system Governor. Shortly after, all contact is lost with system.

+2: Imperial guard Squad are sent to planet surface, after no word heard from Imperial representative for 2 days. Message sent back to cruiser, Hope of Mordis, from Squad upon landing that they had been attacked upon landing, no further contact made. Presumed that all troop KIA.

+5: Message received by the high lords of Terra, of the attacks on the landing party. And subsequent request sent to the Imperial fists Chapter Master to investigate further, with the assistance of the Vandoland regiment.

+9: After meetings, via astropath, the Imperial Fists despatch a force, led by Captain Lysander, to the Vexus sytem. And make contact with High Marshal Helbrecht whilst en route. Who commits a Crusade company, led by Castellan Throgus.

+70: Imperial Fists forces exit the warp, on the outskirts of the Vexus system, and rendezvous with the supporting Vandoland forces, and to await the arrival of Black Templar Company.

+83: Black Templar forces arrive in system, and meetings are held between Captain Lysander and Castellan Throgus. It is decided that Imperial Fists forces will be led by Captain Tiberius Vallarn, 5th Company, acting as support to the larger Black Templar’s force.

+90: Attacks begin on the Orbital Defence systems of Vexus IV, V and VII. Ready for close range Infantry and armour drops to planets’ surface. The frigates, Thressian and Castus Demmo, are subsequently crippled by defensive fire.

+92: All Defence systems are finally destroyed, incurring additional sever damage to the light cruiser, Might of Torro, which allows the first troops to be transported to the surface of Vexus VII, forces secure a landing zone and await arrival of heavy armour.

+103: Second wave deployed to affirm the surrender of rebel forces on Vexus III. Planet submissive to Imperial rule once more.

+104: Heavy armour deployed to Vexus VII, imperial forces expand their perimeter and strike out at key targets, hostile resistance encountered in Pevoria City (planet capital), threat level high, subsequent Astartes support requested by field commanders.

+122: Heavy Armour deployed to Vexus I, some rebel forces surrender to Vandoland Regiments. General of the 19th Regiment has all rebel prisoners executed as public display of power, all remaining insurgents are believed to have fled to rural regions, Imperial Rule is once again secured.

+123: Imperial Guard Forces make planet fall on Vexus IX, first wave is destroyed by rebel forces. Second wave makes planet fall in quick succession, rebel forces are weak from fighting and are subsequently massacred by the Vandoland 343rd Regiment.

+124: Black Templar Fleet engaged by rebel ships, despite having the element of surprise rebel ships are destroyed. Black Templars carry out barding actions on the Pressia Delorna, events later known as 'The Retaking of the Delorna'.

+125: Imperial Rule is confirmed on Vexus IX, Vandoland forces on Vexus I, VII and IX report agricultural exports impossible, crops are dead on a planetary scale.

Update to follow with 'The Battle For Pevoria City'...

The Battle for Pevoria City

The city of Pevoria is made up 10 sectors, the southern 4 Sectors are devoted to industry, to north east separated by the river are 3 residential sectors, centrally located is the core sector containing government buildings and commercial facilities and to the west and north west are 2 sectors devoted to city amenities and promethium storage plants.

Pevoria City was designated a key target for Imperial forces, mostly because of the promethium storage plants designed to re-supply transport ships and fleets for export. This supply of fuel would help supplement fleet supplies for the inevitable engagements on the core planets. The 9th and 83rd and 110th Vandoland regiments had secured the 4 industrial sectors to the south, but suffered heavy casualties maintaining their foothold. Vandoland heavy armour, in the form of the 47th and 48th Armoured Tank Companies were failing to make progress in the dense city streets, rebel forces targeting the tanks as a priority and turing them into roadblocks on most advances. Due to these heavy losses the General of the ground forces requested Astartes support, his request was received by Captain Lysander. Captain Vallarn and the 5th Company were subsequently assigned to bring a swift end to the hostilities, it was essential that the early stages of the campaign were quick and efficient, momentum must be maintained for the strike on the core planets.

Captain Vallarn, 85 marines from the 5th Company and 15 Scouts from 10th Company made planet fall in the Industrial Sector in preparation for breaking the stale mate. Meanwhile aboard the strike cruiser Titus, Chaplain Vorenus and 5th companies 20 assault marines prepared for their part in the up and coming battle.
Recognising the need for a short and effective strike Captain Vallarn prepared an armoured convoy to cleave through the city, engaging resistance where ever encountered, the Vandoland regiments would support their advance mopping up any survivors and ensuring the sectors were secured in the Marine's wake. Vallarn would then secure and clear the city's core proving a foothold for the Vandoland regiments to sweep the rest of the city clean. Vallarn selected a route that would swing out into the North East of the city and down into core sector via a fright road, a far from direct route.

3 hours after landing 5th companies offensive pushed out from the Industrial sectors and into the Hab zones of the North East sectors. The convoy formed up with 3 Land Raiders to front, Rhino's in close support and predators on the flanks. The vandoland regiments followed suit with a diluted mixture of tanks and chimeras. The 10th companies scouts acted as out riders to the convoy moving at great speed through the dense streets eliminating threats where able and alerting the convoy to dangers ahead. The rebel forces had prepared for a frontal assault and thus scrambled to engage the the Convoy as it progressed East. With the land raiders making the most of the wider freight roads the convoy successfully cleaved a route through the residential sectors and arced the convoy into the central core of the city from the East.

Under sporadic gun fire the convoy progressed into the central core 19 hours after making planet fall, the high rise buildings overshadowing their approach and providing cover for rebel forces. Incoming fire from rebel armour destroyed the lead land raider and disabled another. 5th companies assault marines made a low altitude jump into the rebel positions and successfully destroyed the enemy armour.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=84779&stc=1&d=1268831984

With the road into the central core blocked the the Imperial Fist forces were required to proceed on foot through the central core of the city and on to the fuel depots. 31 hours after making planet fall lead by Chaplain Vorenus and the Assault Marines, 4 tactical squads from 5th company proceeded inside to clear the promethium storage facility, whilst the remaining marines secured the perimeter. The clearing operation made slow but steady progress through the complex, engaging over 100 rebel militia held up inside. Outside the complex minor engagements from rebel forces kept the remaining Astartes busy. 37 hours after making planet fall the battle for Pevoria City was declared over. The final casualty bill from the battle for Pevoria city totalled 13 Marines, 2 Land Raiders and 1 Rhino for an estimated kill count of over 400 rebel militia, 2 Leman Russes and 27 miscellaneous light vehicles.

41 hours after making planet fall Captain Vallarn boarded the last space bound Thunderhawk and returned to the fleet for rearming in preparation for the next engagement....

Some fantastic writing there and the marines are looking awesome. Great mix of well thought out original background material and some well researched fluffy context. The art work really adds to the piece and is well chosen also.

I look forward to seeing more quality Marines, especially what you end up doing with the Dreadnought and also look forward to reading about how the campaign progresses.

Eltanko and I are working on the campaign progression and have some quite fun twists and turns in store for the story, so hopefully you'll enjoy reading it old friend, really hoping to convey the bleakness of warfare in the 40k universe.

Thanks very much, its great fun doing joint project logs! Really aids the enthusiasm. More models to follow shortly too :)

Demi-Squad Beta of the 2nd Tactical Squad, 5th Company.

2nd Squad is armed with the same standard wargear as the 1st Tactical Squad, favouring a flamer and missile launcher for missions at hand. The 5 marine Demi-Squad shown below have a far less eclectic mix of armour than 1st Squad. Shown here are 4 suits of MkVII 'aquila' pattern power armour and 1 suit of MkIV 'maximus' pattern power armour. Although it should be noted that the suit of MkIV has been heavily modified over its life time and now sports many MkVII componants, an all to common sight with the need for replacement parts and ease of repair.

All the marines are displaying the Vexus Crusade campaign badge on their armour, 3 on the armour plate of their power packs, the other 2 marines on the rear of the leg armour and on the Knee pad respectively.

The main role of this demi-squad is to provide covering fire whilst the 2nd demi-squad, consiting of the tactical sqaud's sergeant and flamer advance upon the objective or the enemies position.

freehand, the only sculpted details are the chapter icons, and obviously the standard skulls and motifs that plastic marines come with.

Looking good, yellow is hard to paint but you've pulled it off. The highlinghting is done very well too.

Thanks fella, i'm not entirely happy with the qualit yof the weathering on these last 5, the photos have showed up some areas that look less like skuffs and more like mythril silver highlights, i will go back amke corrections in the near future!

Demi-Squad Alpha of the 2nd Tactical Squad, 5th Company.

2nd Squad is armed with the same standard wargear as the 1st Tactical Squad, favouring a flamer and missile launcher for missions at hand. The 5 marine Demi-Squad shown below have a more eclectic mix of armour than demi-squad Beta, parts from MkIV, V, IV and VII power armour can all be seen present, as has been noted before, the presence of such ancient armour patterns is a rare sight, and really only found amongst the first founding legions.

The banner sported by the Veteran Sergeant is somewhat unorthodox in the context of the Codex Astartes, however clearly displayed are squad number, '2' a skull to indicate that the bearer of the banner is in a command postion and the company number '5' displayed within the skull motif.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=85999&d=1270225220

The majority of demi-squad alpha are displaying the Vexus Crusade badge on the rear of their leg armour. As is recognised by the Codex Astartes.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=86000&d=1270225220

The Sergeant's helmet is in traditional codex colour markings, correctly identifying him as a Veteran Sergeant, also note that the helmet hanging from the belt discredits the myth that Astartes Sergeants do not wear helmets into battle, a common misconception amongst Imperial remembrancers.

This tactical squad was one of six that served under the command of Captain Tiberius Vallarn, 5th Company for the duration of the Vexus Crusade. Tactical squads making up the fighting back bone of the Imperial Fist's force and the second Tactical Squad was no exception.

Commander Tiberius Vallarn, Captain of the 5th Battle Company and Master of the Siege‏.

Shown below is Captain Tiberius Vallarn during the Vexus Crusade, Vallarn wears the colours of his company, his veteran status is indicated by the white decoration and laurelled helmet. Vallarn's armour is a suit of heavily modified MkVII 'aquilla' pattern power armour, adorned with gems and laurels, indicating his rank and captaincy. Vallarn's thunder Hammer was presented to him by Inquisitor Lord Karamazov after his actions on the world of Carpath-Delta-Four. Adorning Vallarn's wrist is chapter relic, a Storm Bolter of the same design as that used by Pedro Kantor, Chapter Master of the Crimson Fists.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=86544&d=1270890753

Due to its massive rate of fire, the storm bolter is belt fed from ammunition clips on the armour's power pack.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=86545&d=1270890753

Clearly seen here is Vallarn's helmet, adorned with green laurels not only denoting his veteran status, but they are awarded to Marines for great acts of Valour leading to victory in battle.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=86546&d=1270890753

Upon his right shoulder pouldron Vallarn wears the Imperial Aquila, a sign of his rank and devotion to the God Emperor.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=86547&d=1270890771

Vallarn wears at his belt a black sash, indicating that he is Captain of the 5th Battle company, this is slightly unorthodox as Captain's usually wear their company colours on a cape or robe.

Character Bio/History

Like all his brethren Tiberius Vallarn is an intolerably stubborn marine and intensely loyal. He judges others how he himself wishes to be judged, by his actions. He is a fiery commander often too eager to get to grips with the enemy, a trait which was won him much renowned within the Chapter despite costing him the tactical advantage on several occasions. Vallarn's critics are all too eager to point out his failings, although none can contest that he is a well rounded combatant with a flair for front line leadership.

Vallarn is often considered a rogue among his fellow Captains; none the less his accolades have won him some allies in high places throughout the years which have certainly helped facilitate his rise through the ranks. Equally his attitude has incurred the wrath of others. On a number of occasions Vallarn has been disciplined for disobeying orders, subsequently many of his critics openly opposed his promotion to Captain, however, none of this concerns Vallarn. Despite his ambitions for further rank and renown he has no time nor skill for Chapter politics, Vallarn is confident he will achieve his goals through actions not by making friends, he is quoted as saying 'he respects the man not the rank'.

It was clear from an early age that Vallarn had the qualities and well rounded skills required for leadership and was considered very early on as squad leader material if he could keep his defiant nature in check. Following events in the Thranx system, Chaplain Lo Chang, then of the 5th Company, noted that Vallarn would go on to do great things in the Chapter. Engaged in fighting Orks in the Thranx System, elements of the Imperial Fists 10th and 5th companies were deployed in the defence of the capital's hive city. Vallarn, his fellow scouts and elements of the task force where assigned a sentry position on the outskirts of the northern approached to the Hive complex. After a minor skirmish with Orks, Vallarn's squad sergeant was killed, despite this minor contact Vallarn became suspicious of the lack of activity in his sector, unable to contact his superiors via Vox communication Vallarn made the decision to take command and disobey his orders, a decision that epitomised his future career and is preciously the type of action which has led to him being labelled a rogue. Leaving his position against orders and leading 14 of his fellow scouts back into the Hive Vallarn risked the success of the defence on a hunch.
Vallarn and his scouts reached the Imperial command post to see it near overrun by Orks, having infiltrated behind enemy lines Ork commandoes had taken the Imperial Commanders by surprise. Vallarn's arrival however, surprised the Orks as much as their arrival had surprised the unprepared Imperial forces. Seeing the Chaplain Lo Chang, his helmet destroyed and his face racked with shrapnel, fighting at close quarters with a huge Ork, Vallarn and his squad riddled the Orks with Bolter rounds, swinging the fight in the Imperium's favour and undoubtedly saving Lo Chang's life. From the momentum of Vallarn’s counter attack Lo Chang was able to rally the Imperial forces and purge the xenos from the command post.
Vallarn's act of insubordination and heroism led to the Master of the Recruits deeming 'that Vallarn could learn no more in the 10th Company', and thus he was inducted into the 6th Tactical Reserve Company as a full Battle Brother. The Master of the Recruits is also noted as jesting that 'Vallarn probably believed no one had anything left to teach him'.

Vallarn views the seven years he spent in the 6th Company as penitence for his failings and certainly the most frustrating time of his military career. An uncharacteristic period of peace in the Segmentum Solar led to very little action for the reserve companies. Whilst many took use this time to hone their skills, it taught Vallarn nothing of patience. Vallarn found himself drawn into confrontations with his superiors regarding the deployment of Astartes and their use as a tool of the Emperor, this was until in his seventh year of service, a Dark Eldar cruiser was detected launching raids against the moon of Gathalamor. With no other Imperial Forces in the system, elements of the Imperial Fist's 5th and 6th Companies rapidly deploying to aid the Imperial mining colonies. The Dark Eldar had struck with such speed that the Astartes arrived to find the Dark Eldar cruiser making ready to leave the system loaded with Imperial prisoners. With no other option available to them the Astartes attempted a highly risky boarding action to liberate the prisoners. After almost 28 hours of nightmarish fighting and huge losses to the Astartes force the cruiser was eventually taken, the mission however was a failure as most of the prisoners were dead, tortured and mutilated by the Dark Eldar. To further compounding the situation the surviving Dark Eldar had vanished. The Imperial Fists had been faced with an impossible task, securing the prisoners in an alien environment whilst engaging the lightning quick Dark Eldar, the mission plagued Vallarn more than any other of his life. Vallarn would go onto to make tougher choices and bare witness to much greater losses but fighting the Dark Eldar had been like fighting a shadow, the lack of control he had over the events of that battle infuriated him and he came to truly detest the Dark Eldar.

Following the boarding actions over Gathalamor Chaplain Lo Chang was promoted to the 1st Company, his last act as Chaplain of the 5th Company was to replenish the Company's losses with the induction of Marines from the Reserve Companies, amongst these Marines was Tiberius Vallarn reassigned to the 3rd Tactical Squad of the 5th Company. Vallarn's exploits and deeds in his beloved 5th Company would define him more than any other events in his life.

Vallarn earliest exploits in the 5th company where attached to the 67th Terrax Imperial guard regiment acting as an elite mobile strike force dealing with the constant menace the Orks posed to the system, during this period Vallarn first started to hone the siege skills the chapter had earned infamy for. Vallarn consulted on the defence of important Imperial positions and took part in numerous defensive actions and prepared assaults upon heavily defended Ork encampments. Over the decade that the 5th company was in standard rotation in the system he continued to hone his well rounded skills proving to be equally effective with a combat knife and a belt full of frag grenades as a boltgun. Vallarn mainly served in standard tactical formation deployed from rhinos, his preferred method having never been entirely comfortable jump packs, nor content with killing his enemies at range. After fighting Orks for the better part of a decade the 5th Company was reassigned, they were to form part of an Imperial task force headed for the Forgeworld of Cypra Mundi in Segmentum Obscurus. The Forgeworld had come under attack from renegade forces believed to contain elements of the traitorous Word Bearer Legion.

During the campaign the 5th Company were involved in securing key locations in preparation for a final assault on the enemy’s strong hold. Sent to secure a forward observation post some 10km from the final objective, the 3rd and 4th Tactical squads uncovered something far more sinister. Besieging the observation post the Marines cleaved into the renegade forces within, with the observation post all but secure the head strong Vallarn, in command of his demi-squad, ignored his orders to hold position and moved into the sub-levels of the structure to clear out any remaining renegades. Within the sub-levels Chaos cultist’s had taken refuge intent on summoning Daemons, fortunately for the Imperial forces Vallarn’s demi-squad interrupted the ritual eliminating the traitors in brutal close quarters combat. Having prevented a potential daemonic incursion the 3rd Tactical Squad were hailed heroes and their names recorded in the Chapter’s records.

Six weeks after the events on Cypra Mundi the Imperial Fists received a transmission that a severely injured Astartes, claiming to be of their Chapter, had been captured aboard a small shuttle near the Cadian Gate. Under the command of the Librarian Epistolary Ellisar the strike cruiser ‘Titus’ with elements of the 5th Company, among them the 3rd Tactical Squad and Brother Vallarn, were dispatched to investigate. Rendezvousing with the Imperial Battleship, Ellisar and the 3rd Tactical Squad boarded to meet their supposed brother, lead to the holding cells by the ship’s Captain, the Astartes were astonished to see, sat before them, Captain Darnath Lysander, former 1st Company Captain and Hero of the Chapter 1000 years prior. All of the Astartes saluted, save one, Tiberius Vallarn, who trained the sights of his Boltgun squarely on the seated Astartes, refusing to lower his weapon until Lysander’s identity could be proven. Epistollary Ellisar was furious and snatched the Boltgun from Vallarn’s grip, dismissing him back to the ‘Titus’. Unknown to him, this encounter with Captain Lysander earned him a great a deal of respect from the 1st Company Captain, seeing much of himself in the tenacious Tactical Marine.
Upon returning to the Phalanx, much of the 5th Company was placed into quarantine, due to their proximity to the chaos taint on Cypra Mundi but and the mysteriously returning Captain Lysander. Meanwhile the entire chapter made ready for war against the encroaching Hive Fleet Leviathan, battles that would cost the Imperial Fists dearly in order to stay the tide of Tyranids in Segmetum Tempestus. Outraged at the accusations of taint and his absence from the war against the Tyranid threat Vallarn came close to blows with the chapter’s librarians and chief apothecary overseeing his screening.

Some 6 months later the threat of Hive Fleet Leviathan had been all but annihilated, only 48% of the Imperial Fists returning from fighting the Tyranids. The 5th Company, under the command of Captain Aggathon, were put back into action against Orks in Segmentum Solar, fighting along the side the Terrax Guard once again. 10 years had passed since his release from quarantine and Vallarn found himself and a number of other Marines summoned to the Phalanx with much urgency. Darnath Lysander had been reinstated as the Captain of the 1st Company and with the aid of Chaplain Lo Chang, had drawn up a list of Marines for promotion to the 1st Company, amongst others was the name Tiberius Vallarn. Vallarn’s 26 years in the 1st Company were served with distinction, having fought on many battlefields and against many foes, most notably; defeating the Ork invasion of Ulani, the purging of Space Hulk Delta-2317 and helping to suppress a rebel uprising on Hive world of Rhanna III. Vallarn was a clear choice for squad sergeant following the death of his the former squad leader. Vallarn’s first assignment as Sternguard Sergeant was on campaign with an Adeptus Mechanicus exploratory force. The Adeptus Mechanicus waged war in a very different style to the Astartes, manipulating allies and enemies alike, both of which made Vallarn uncomfortable. Vallarn’s squad undertook a number of covert missions, retrieving data-cores and long forgotten Mechancum properties. The inherent secrecy and style of this assignment vexed Vallarn; more accustom to direct fights and open engagement.
Vallarn’s time in the 1st Company was uncommonly brief, requesting transfer back to the 5th Battle Company after only 32 years, despite the honour of serving with the Chapter’s elite Vallarn lusted for the simplicities of serving with a Battle Company and the honestly of siege warfare. Vallarn’s transfer was approved, with both Captain Lysander and Captain Aggathon agreeing that Vallarn could serve the Chapter better as the 5th Company’s 1st Sergeant.

Vallarn’s first campaign back with the 5th Company was on the planet of Carpath-Delta-Four, a populated Imperial world plagued by dark religious cults and mutant attacks. Inquisitor Lord Karamazov requested assistance from the Astartes to help bring a close to the situation at hand. After weeks of investigation Karamazov concluded that the Cultists and mutants were operating out of a base in the Theron Mountains, the Imperial Fists, supported by local regiments, were tasked with a search and destroy mission to eradicate the cultists. Forming an armoured convoy the Imperial Fist forces began the arduous task of navigating the mountain roads. The higher reaches proving impassable to armoured vehicles the Astartes advanced on foot, eventually locating a heavily armed fortress in the mountainside. With a vast killing field, bare of cover, an all out assault was near impossible. Electrical storms and heavy ionization in the lower atmosphere made aircraft and orbital assaults far too risky and thus Captain Aggathon was tasked with organizing an offensive from the ground. After careful planning it was decided that A mix of artillery and jump infantry would look to take out the majority of the fortresses defences whilst the bulk of the company advanced on foot to main gate. The ensuing battle was bloody and intense, the thickest fighting Vallarn had seen since Cypra Mundi with the enemy well dug in and the Imperial Fist's assault failing the Imperial Fists were pinned on the now cratered plateau. With his brother's trapped by heavy weapons fire, Vallarn made a foolhardy run for the fortress gate, miraculously dodging gunfire and snatching up a meltagun from a fallen brother on route. Reaching the main gate Vallarn put the meltagun into use, turning the one of the thick plasteel gates into a white hot molten slurry, with the Meltagun's fuel expended Vallarn drew his power sword and began hacking at the second gate. As the second gate fell Vallarn was knocked from his feet by a hail of shells, incapacitated Vallarn was dragged to safety as the Imperial Fists stormed the gate and cleared the fortress within with the support of the Guard regiments. Without Vallarn's actions the offensive would have been wasted and a great many more Battle Brothers would have been lost.

Inquisitor Lord Karamazov remarked that Vallarn’s heroic actions where an inspiration to all, in recognition of his actions Karamazov commissioned the planets armourers to forge a thunder hammer, Captain Aggathon jested that should Vallarn ever again have the need to batter down a gate it would be a more suitable tool that his sword!

After the fighting on Carpath-Delta-Four the 5th Company was deployed back to the Thranx System once again fighting against the ever present Ork menace there. In the few months prior to thwir arrival the Orks were threatening to overrun the system, and if left unchecked could develop in a Waaagh! Forced to defend the Hive on Thranx Prime once again, the 5th Company prepared to break the Ork forces once and for all, facing an impossible battle Captain Aggathon requested further support from the chapter, reinforcements that would take 33 days to arrive. The ensuing battle saw the Imperial forces fighting against a never ending Ork horde, barely maintaining their lines the Imperial Fists held out until the 32nd day. Ork war machines finally broke the siege forcing the fortress defences to fail. Whilst stubbornly trying to hold the line Captain Aggathon fell to a huge Ork, recklessly Vallarn rallied the Command Squad and charged through fray to recover the fallen Captain. With the Imperial Forces overrun and the Orks pouring into the fortress wave after wave, all seemed lost. As night fell on the 32nd day Imperial reinforcements arrived in the form of Lysander and the 1st Company teleporting into the battle, with the Orks thrown off guard Vallarn seized the opportunity and lead the remains of the 5th Company in a counter assault. With Vallarn and Lysander securing the inner fortress, further reinforcements made planet fall, turning the tide of battle.

Captain Aggathon had proved himself a hero of the Chapter, but with his body broken he was destined to be entombed with a Dreadnought. As was tradition a council was assembled aboard the Phalanx where the Company Captains elected a new leader for the 5th Battle Company, to the surprise of all present Lysander gave his backing to Tiberius Vallarn for the Captaincy. After many hours of heated debate, Lysander’s vote for Vallarn was seconded by the Chaplain Lo Chang and the former Captain Aggathon, in light of these venerable heroes support the Chapter Master declared Vallarn, a headstrong rebellious rogue and Captain of the 5th Battle Company.

For the years that followed Vallarn served with honour as Captain of the 5th Company, rebuilding them in his image after the losses on Thranx, Vallarn has bent the teachings of the Codex Astartes to suit his style of warfare, favouring tactical marines over other squad types. Following 4 years of further campaigning against the ever present Ork menace, Vallarn was instructed to make his company ready for deployment to the Vexus system, the system had fallen from the Emperor’s light and was to be retaken. This campaign would be one of the most important Vallarn had undertaken; for the Vexus system was not only important to the Imperium but to the Imperial Fists themselves.

I have to give special thanks to cpt_baughan for essentially writing this mammoth documentation of Vallarn's life with me, he really deserves the credit for it, i was but a humble servant and editor!

- - -

The conversion work for Vallarn was remarkably simple, he is essentially Pedro Kantor with the arms and Hammer of the Limited Edition Gamesday Captain. The left shoulder pad is taken from the new GW Imperial Fists command upgrade pack.

Hope you all like him, i am now working on my Sternguard Squad, which will act as the 5th Companies command squad :)

The head is from the GD08 ltd edition captain, not a big fan of the head actually but it worked better with the posing of this model than the others i tried.

Sternguard Sergeant

Sternguard Sergeant Quintus served under the command of Vallarn in the first company, accepting promotion to squad sergeant on Vallarn's transfer to the 5th Company. Upon Vallarns elevation to captaincy, he requesitioned Quintus as his 1st Sergeant.

Although now 5th Company's 1st Sergeant, in the traditions of the Sternguard Quintus is armed with a MkV 'ultra-pattern' boltgun, the formidable weapon boasts a telescopic sight and larger ammunition magazine. Further more Quintus makes use of various special ammunition types. Note the raised guard on Quintus' left shoulder pouldron, giving extra protection when advancing under fire, also not the laurels on the same pauldron, only given to marines that show acts of valour directly contributing to a victory on the battle field.

Sternguard Veteran 02

Armed with a MkIX 'gryphonne-pattern' Heavy Flamer, this veteran is armed for aggressive close support, ideal for tunnel fighting and clearing bunkers. This pattern of heavy flamer is becoming very popular amongst veterans due to its increased promethium capacity without the requirement for a combersome powerpack mounted tank.

Note that this veteran has painted his MkV studded shoulder pauldron white, along with his helmet, denoting him as a veteran of the chapter.

Sternguard Veteran 03

This veteran is adorned in modified MkVI 'corvus-pattern' power armour, displaying the chapter symbol on his right shoulder pad, the symbol itself circled by the imperial laurels. Like the squard sergeant this veteran is armed with a MkV 'ultra-pattern' boltgun, again the weapon boasts a telescopic sight and larger ammunition magazine than is standard issue. Again note the display of veterancy through the white helmet and the white shoulder pouldron.

5th Company's Command Squad

Under Vallarn's reshaping of the 5th Company, the traditional roles associated with a command squad were ignored in favour of a more direct approach to battle.
Vallarn believes that the company banner and apothecaries have no place on battle field, thus has his command squad select wargear as required for the mission at hand, which in most circumstances facilitates the use of wargear more commonly associated with the 1st Company's Sternguard squads.

Thus the 5th Company Command squad, whilst operating during the siege of the 'Fortress of Sigismund' went into battle armed with 3no. MkV 'ultra-pattert' boltguns and 2no. MkIX 'gryphonne-pattern' Heavy Flamers. A loadout that complimented fighting in the vaults and chambers of the fortress.

A strict requirment of Commander Vallarn is that all members of his command squad must have earnt the laurels, awarded only for acts of valour leading to victories in the field. Although not a teaching of codex astartes, Vallarn believes that acts of valour are an essential part of commanding a company!

Venerable Brother Aggathon

Brother Aggathon is the previous captain of the 5th company and Vallarn's predecessor. Aggathon's body was broken fighting Orks in Thranx system and if it wasn't for the heroic, yet reckless actions of the then 1st Sergeant Vallarn, Aggathon would surely have perished on the field of battle.

Brother Aggathon was interred within the sarcophagus of a mighty dreadnought so as to serve the chapter still. The dreadnought is a highly modified MkIV dreadnought, with the majority of the internal workings and components dating back to days of the great crusade.

Upon the panels flanking the sarcophagus are the chapter symbol and a record of Aggathon's accolades. Also note the 5th company marking on the left leg armour.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=87623&stc=1&d=1271928790

Favouring close combat Aggathon usually wields a might power fist and heavy flamer into battle.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=87624&stc=1&d=1271928790

Note again the company marking and the seal of the Adeptus Mechanicus, attached to it are litanies of purification dedicated to the armour's machine spirit and the Omnissiah.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=87625&stc=1&d=1271928816

Aiding in the role of close support Aggathon sports an assault cannon, this weapons high rate of fire literally chews through armour and flesh alike. Note the crux terminus and simple decoration adorning the weapon, honours Aggathon achieved in his 'living' career.
Also note the Vexus Crusade campaign badge and the written account of his actions in the campaign thus far.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=87626&stc=1&d=1271928816

I hope you all like the dreadnought, i shamelessly took inspiration/copied the sarcophagus idea from Tim Davis's dreadnought on the games-workshop website (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/blogPost.jsp?aId=9200017a). It looks knightly and almost templar-esq, giving a nice tie into the pre-heresy Imperial Fists.

Thanks fella, the new venerable kit is an interesting one to be sure, i found it actually quite hard to make anything other than the 3 'sample' dreads GW have on their website, hense the conversion to get something a little different, i use that word hesitantly as is copied the idea, lol

Nice work dude, the dread and pod both look ace! I like the weathering on the drop pod, how did you go about doing it? The more angular look of the sarcophagus does, as you say, make it look more templar-esque. Whats next in line?

THe weathering was nice and easy actually, its just chaos black & scorched brown sponged on liberally to the lower and higher areas of the pod, anywhere i think that it would have 'burn' marks from its descent. I used more brown on the lower parts, adding in some graveyard earth to get a 'muddier' impact feel. Where as the burns on the top fins from the thruster have more black applied.

SpikeyJames did his pods like this and was kind enough to tell me how it was done, credit should go to him really!!

The Vexus Crusade, Campaign Progress Update:

The Imperial forces make good progress, having brought 8 of worlds back into the Imperial fold the Imperial task forces tightens the noose around the remaing defiant worlds: Vexus IV, home to the fortress of sigismund, Vexus V the systems capital world and seat of power, and lastly Vexus VI a mountainous world litered with hives and industry, the 2nd moon of this world is home to the temple of the system's astro-telepathica.

+128: With the system mostly back under Imperial Control, and progress almost on schedule, the Adeptus Mechanicus fleet emerges from the warp on the outskirts of the system. Amongst the survey ships, biological lab ships and armed escort are the carriers of the Collegia Titanica, transporting the titans of the Legio Victorum 'foe slayers' from the forgeworld of Galatia.

+129: With the noose of the Imperial Navy closing in on the core planets, more accurate assessments of the enemies number is ascertained. Most disturbing of all is the confirmed Presence of the Iron Warriors, believed to be the warband of Warsmith Mollock, a particularly well known and feared Iron Warrior, though accurate numbers have not yet been confirmed. Captain Lysander holds a war-council with the crusade commanders to establish a plan for taking the core planets. All military commanders from the fleet rendezvous aboard the Imperial Fist's battle barge the 'Illuminatus Imperator'.

+132: Under the direction of Captain Lysander the Imperial Fleet push into the space around Vexus IV and begin strategic bombardments of the planet. Meanwhile a small combined Astartes force from both the Black Templars and the Imperial Fists prepare for a rapid assault on the 2nd moon of Vexus VI, known in the vernacular tongue as Yarandrus. The strike designed to target a key communications relay and temple of the Adeptus Astro Telepathica, control of this facility will ensure traitor forces are unable to call for aid outside of the system.

+134: The communications facility, the Pressa Delorna and 20 Astartes are lost in a thermo plasma detonation, events later known as 'The Massacre at Yarandrus'.

+137: Black Templar forces secure a landing site in the agri-regions of Vexus IV, the landing site is approximately 140km from the Fortress of Sigismund. From this beach head Imperial Forces can be landed on mass to prepare for the siege.

+138: Imperial Fist forces secure the primary space port on Vexus V, the Vandoland regiments begin landing troops in order to garrison the city and establish order, initial progress is good.

+139: Vandoland regiments report heavy resistance from the Capital spire on Vexus V, further regiments and heavy armour are deployed to ensure swift success.

+139: The landing zone on Vexus IV is fortified under the direction of Captain Vallarn, the Vandoland regiments begin landing heavy armour and preparing landing sites for the Collegia Titanica landing craft.

+139.3: Rebel forces launch an assault on the landing zone, hoping to annihilate the invaders before heavier forces are landed. The defence of the landing zone is co-ordinated by Castellan Throgus & Captain Vallarn, events later known as 'Defence at Ground Zero'

+141: Vandoland Storm Trooper regiments secure multiple landing sites on the mountainous hive world of Vexus VI, Vandoland guard regiments begin their landing to enforce martial law. On Vexus IV heavy armour prepares for the offensive and the Titans of the Legio Victorum are armed with the final offerings to Omnissiah made, the Imperial forces begin preparations for the siege of the Fortress of Sigismund.

+142: Communications from Vexus IX cease for unknown reasons, Vandoland 9th Storm Trooper regiment dispatched from Vexus VII to investigate and re-establish communications

+142.7: Vandoland forces on Vexus V confirm Imperial Control and all but 1 of the systems rebel governors are now accounted for, dead or alive. The missing governor is from Vexus IX, intelligence suggests that the Governor may well be on Vexus IV.

+143: Vandoland forces struggle to make progress on Vexus VI mostly due to topography and the dense hives. Vandoland officers make multiple requests for Astartes support, their requests are denied by Captain Lysander; all Astartes are to be committed to Vexus IV and the imminent siege of the Fortress of Sigismund.

- - -

Once again this timeline update has been co-writen by Eltanko and I for Vexus Crusade project logs. The events known as the Massacre at Yarandrus have also been co-writen, the colaborative story can be found on both of our project logs.

The Massacre at Yarandrus

The communications facilities on the 2nd Moon of Vexus VI, known in the vernacular tongue as 'Yarandrus', are home to the system Astropathica Temples and interstellar communications arrays. Each system within the Imperium boasts similar facilities, ensuring they are able to communicate with Holy Terra and nearby systems, furthermore the presence of the Astropathica Temple provides a beacon in the warp for inbound shipping, assisting them in navigating to the system.

To ensure that the Imperial Forces can successfully take control of the Vexus System the facility on Yarandrus must be secured, with the known presence of an Iron Warrior War-band the traitor's ability to communicate with potential reinforcements must be minimised. The facility itself is for all intents and purposes an underground fortress, heavily defended with anti-orbital missile batteries and anti-aircraft emplacements covering its access points, to further complicate the mission the facility is designed to avoid being captured. The key to this is the thermo-plasma generator core; if the core was to be detonated the resulting explosion would likely destroy a good quarter of the mood. Thus, under the orders of Captain Lysander, a small team of hand picked Marines is assembled to infiltrate the facility and retake control of key areas undetected.

The mission plan was to use 2 transport shuttles from the recently captured Pressa Delorna, both of which would pose as supply shuttles landing within the facility and unloading. Meanwhile their extra cargo, in the form of 4 small teams of Astartes would infiltrate the facility and capture the following locations: The Command & Control room, The Astropathica Temple and most crucially the Generator control room. Once these locations were secure more troops could be landed to purge the facility of any rebel forces. Due to the need for stealth and infiltration the selected teams would need to be in Carapace armour, each team lead by a veteran experienced in this style of warfare. It was agreed that 2 Veteran Sergeants, Octavius and Brutus of the Imperial Fist's 10th Company would lead 2 of the teams, Lysander assigned Brother Veteran Kiernan from his 1st Company detachment and the 4th team leader was selected from amongst the Black Templars, Brother Initiate Raiya. The teams were then selected from the Imperial Fist's scout squads and the Neophytes of the Black Templars Crusader Squads.

It was speculated that the Command and Control Room would be the most heavily guarded, thus Team Octavius and Team Raiya would be assigned to retake the control room. Team Kiernan would move into the deeper sub-levels and secure the Generator Control Room leaving Team Brutus to secure the Astropathica Temple. At 0500 on the 132nd Solar day, Terran Time, of the Vexus Crusade, the Dauntless Class Light Cruiser Pressa Delorna moved into low orbit over the communications facility on Yarandrus, with landing permissions granted 2 cargo shuttles entered the complex under the guise of delivering supplies and technical parts.

Following standard Imperial procedure the shuttles landed and the unloading crews of servitors and foreman set to work hauling cargo from the shuttles holds. Whilst the few rebel operatives present were preoccupied with the unloading, 4 teams of 5 Astartes slipped unnoticed from the rear of the shuttles and through a side door in the hanger bay. Team Brutus made its way to a ventilations shaft where they would ascend to the Astropathica Temple in the upper levels of the complex, their planned route would take longer than the other teams, but would minimise their contact with rebel patrols. Team Kiernan made their way west along the labyrinth of corridors leading to a maintenance elevator that would take them directly to the Generator Control Room, the route was fast but the risk of hostile contact was high, a calculated risk that was agreed necessary. Team Octavian and Team Raiya headed East to the Command and Control room, their route would require them to pass through the facilities Hab block and communications research laboratories, their journey would be the most difficult but would afford them minimal hostile contact and the element of Surprise upon reaching their objective.

Team Brutus began their arduous ascent of 203 meters to the Temple of Astropathica, utilizing magna grapples and the occasional maintenance ladder they made good progress for the first 150 meters, covering the distance faster than expected. The next 150 meters presented a bigger challenge, motion sensors, automated defence weapons and laser alarm grids. With great care the team set about the task of disarming the sensors and evading the laser alarms, taking them a little over 50 minutes to cover the next 40 meters.

Team Kiernan however, were moving with great haste, silenced boltguns raised to eye level they dispatched their unsuspecting enemies as they sped through the labyrinth of corridors to the maintenance elevator. Upon reaching the entrance to the elevator chamber Brother Kiernan offered up a small monocular scope to an air grille over the door, the image relayed to him and his squad's eye pieces. Identifying 3 armed guards inside, Kiernan signalled to the 2 Black Templar Neophytes in his squad to use combat knives. With the team in position Kiernan activated the door, felling the guard facing him with a wet popping noise as the shell from his silenced Boltgun detonated in the mans chest. In reaction to the noise, and spray, from their fallen comrade the other 2 guards wheeled round to face the door. Before they have completed a quarter of their turn the 2 Black Templars had slipped into the room behind them and cut their throats, letting their bodies’ slump to the floor. The team then dragged the 3 bodies into the elevator with them and began their descent to the facilities sub-levels, a journey that would take 16 minutes.

Team Octavian and Team Raiya began the delicate task of moving through the Hab block, they would have to pass through 4 dormitory rooms, wash facilities and the defence force's canteen before using a maintenance and ventilation shaft to pass over the primary freight hangers and into the command sector of the facility. From there they would move through the research laboratories putting them directly below the Command and Control room. Although perhaps the most tense part of the mission for the 2 Teams, the Hab blocks were the easiest part, moving silently through the dormitories whilst systematically slitting the throats of the sleeping rebel guards. The 2 teams made good progress, despite Brother Initiate Raiya having to dispatch a barely dressed guard with his bare hands, after the recently showered man had opened the dormitory door on them killing his comrades. With the dormitories behind them the 2 Teams moved to the canteen doors, inside were 12-15 workers enjoying their midday meal. Moving quickly the Marines stormed the room, mercilessly cutting the unprepared rebels down with a hail of Bolter fire. As the squads approached the far exit, a door to their right burst open, revealing a grey lifeless servitor and one human figure behind him, the man’s attire suggested he as chef. The servitor was destroyed by more bolter fire, but not before it could let off a few rounds from the plasma gun attached to its shoulder. One of the Templar Neophytes dropped suddenly to the floor, his carapace armour no match for the searing hot plasma round that scorched through his chest. The lead Imperial Fist scout slumped over, only wounded, following a close range shotgun blast from the chef.

The 2 squads then had to manoeuvre themselves through the tight ventilation shafts above the freight hangars. Though the shafts were small, the lightly armoured marines were able to squeeze through, slowly. Part way through the shaft they drew attention from troops in the hangar bay below, whom, unaware what the noise was, ignored the squads. After successfully passing through the ducts, the 2 squads exited into the laboratory complex, the final leg of their journey before reaching the command room. Most of the movement within the labs came from menial servitors, who paid the marines no attention, as they went about their duty. Upon entering the second laboratory a small number of scientists opened fire, reacting with surprising speed to the intruders. One Imperial fist scout was hit in the throat and collapsed to the floor coughing up a bloody froth. In the ensuing fire fight a large vat at the far end of the room was shattered, the corrosive liquid within flowing down the room, melting furniture as it went. The acid dispatch the remaining scientist as it detached flesh from bone. Conscious of the noise from this engagement the marines moved through the remaining rooms swiftly, making no more hostile contact. Once clear of the laboratory the 2 teams moved into position at the control room doors.

Meanwhile Team Brutus had successfully reached the top of the ventilation shaft and cut their way into the back of a storage locker directly adjacent to the Temple's door, there they waited, they had 3 minutes until the agreed breach time that all 3 teams would move in on their objectives. With Team's Octavian and Raiya in position at the access doors of the Control Room, Team Brutus ready to storm to the Astropathica Temple and Team Kiernan's elevator only seconds away from reaching the Generator's Control Room the most crucial stage of the mission was upon them.

Carefully prising the door open Team Brutus rolled smoke canisters into the Temple, switching to thermal vision they moved inside, 6 shots later and the room was clear, all hostiles eliminated. Before them sat a pale man, blind and robed, this was the head of the Astropathica in the Vexus System. The Team fanned out with their Boltguns raised, Brother Sergeant Brutus stepped forward to introduce himself, a conversation he never got to start...

As the mission time indicator flickered Zero in the corner of his eye piece Brother Initiate Raiya signalled his scouts to storm the room. Breaching charges blew the door inwards, creating a cloud of smoke that would mask their entrance and confuse any enemy within. Both squads entering, splitting left and right, to flank around the outside. Once the dust had cleared, a group of servitors and human menials could be seen at work in the control room. A handful had been killed by shrapnel from the initial blast, others were turning to retaliate. A small squad of rogue guardsman entered the chamber at the far end of the room, and immediately opened fire on the marines, the armed servitors, slower in their response followed suit. The Black Templar’s and Imperial Fists marines were forced to take cover, pinning on the outer edges of the room. One scout fell to the floor, after an auto-round blew his leg off at the knee. Taking quick stock of the situation the Marines reacted to the hostile forces, picking off rebel guardsmen with bolter rounds. With the enemy numbers considerably reduced the scouts began to push further into the control room. A door at the far end of the command room slid open, more rebel guardsmen armed with a heavy bolter entered the room. The heavy calibre shells dispatched 2 scouts and their cover in an explosion of shrapnel and red gore. Whilst the scouts kept up their suppressing fire, Brother Initiate Raiya killed the final few servitors with a well placed frag grenade leaving only the Heavy Bolter team. The heavy bolter continued to cause damage, killing off another Black Templar Neophyte as he attempted to out flank the rebel’s position. It was at this point that an alarm was signalled, which caused thick adamantium doors to seal off all exits, trapping both Marines and enemy inside.

Unnoticed, Sergeant Octavian successfully outflanked the Heavy Bolter and stormed the rebel operators, using his combat blade to dispatch the traitors. With the occupants killed the command and control room was theirs, but at a costly price, the final Marine death toll from squads Raiya and Octavian was 7 dead, and 3 wounded. Even with success at the other 2 objectives, it was likely they would be killed by reinforced enemy troops who were undoubted on route to their position.

The elevator ground to a halt and with a hiss the doors slid open, smoke venting from the recesses, Team Kiernan moved into the control room, the lead 2 scouts dispatching a guard and an engineer with their combat knives whilst the others shot out the overhead lights with their Boltguns. Switching to night vision the team moved through the room slaughtering the un-expecting engineers and rebel guards. With the outer chamber clear Brother-Kiernan pushed forward into the inner chamber, as his foot touched the threshold he was catapulted back across the room with immense force, crashing into a bank of dials and switches. A mighty Ogryn stepped through doorway swinging a huge hammer into another scout crushing his skull on impact. The other three scouts leapt at their assailant, combat knives drawn. The Ogryn now out numbered and not wanting to be outflanked backed up through the door way into the inner chamber, forcing the scouts to follow him. Brother Kiernan scrapped himself up from the control panel and advanced after the Ogryn bolter raised, before him the Ogryn tore an arm from a Black Templar Neophyte as Kiernan took aim, the following events played out in slow motion. Bathed in blue light from the plasma core Kiernan applied pressure to his trigger finger, loosing a hail of bolt shells at the beast before him, as the 3rd or 4th shell left the mussel of his gun he was struck in his mid section, shattering his armour and breaking his ribs, despite the injury this was the least of his worries. 5 more bolt shells fire from his weapon, now pointed past the Ogryn by the force of the impact, the first 2 of these shells cracked and shattered the plate glass at the back of the room, the 3rd and 4th shells overloaded the containment field and the 5th ruptured the plasma conduit beyond.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=87797&stc=1&d=1272095649

The resulting explosion was akin to the creation of a small star, in a split second the entire facility was vaporized in thermo-plasma detonation visible across the system. The Pressa Delorna was caught in the blast ripped apart in the violent shockwave and ever expanding ball of plasma. Thus ended the mission to secure the communication facility on the 2nd Moon of Vexus VI, known in the vernacular tongue as Yarandrus.

Despite the loss of 20 Astartes, the Systems Primary Communications Facility and a Light Cruiser, Captain Lysander officially recorded the Mission as a success in the campaign report, the rebels ability to communicate outside of the system had after all been minimised.

Scout Squad Tobias, 3rd Squad, 10th Company

Under the Command of Captain Lysander a number of units from the 1st Veteran Company and 10th Scout Company were requisitioned for the Vexus Crusade to support Captain Vallarn and the 5th Battle Company. Among the 20 Scouts from the 10th Company was Squad Tobias, under the command Brother Sergeant Niall Tobias.

Tobias's scout squad provided recon support during the 'Battle for Pevoria City' and were the first Imperial forces to set foot on Vexus IV, initally providing intelligence on the propsed land site and surveying the surrounding area for enemy forces, mine-fields and potential dangers.

Pictured here are Sergeant Tobias and his squad of neophytes during the 'Battle for Pevoria City'. Note that Tobias and his squad are issued with MkIX 'stalker' pattern boltguns with advanced silencers and MkXII low light scopes, a relatively young addition to the Astartes forces. The scope allows for greater low light vision and advanced magnification despite its reduced size compared to the regular MkX model sported by most Astartes boltguns.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=87938&stc=1&d=1272214715

The silencers on the MkIX 'stalker' pattern boltguns not only muffels the noise associated with the firing of a shell or round, but also erradicates mussel flash, helping to prevent the scouts from giving away their position. As bolt rounds are explosive shells it takes a very skilled marksmen to ensure that their round detonates within an enemy's flesh, rather than against armour plate.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=87939&stc=1&d=1272214715

The desert style camo cloak and fatigues provided a perfect disguise to troops moving through the sand stone city streets and dusty industrial sectors of Pevoria city.

Not entirely sure why I've not commented on this log again recently, obviously I've been sick in the head. Though essays and not wanting to put meaningless platitudes may also explain it.

This army is going from strength to strength; the Scouts are subtle and realistic, you've got painting yellow down to a 'T' and that Dreadnought idea? Consider it well and truly stolen.

Thanks for the comments gents, and the debate :p I think the new plastic scouts are great kits, they really enable conversion and kit bashing, unlike the more rigidly posed metal scouts. I do however agree that the plastic heads are a little lame, hense the use of goggles on mine.

UPDATE: 1000PTS ARMY

Right i have reached another mile stone in my project log, not only have i painted all the infantry for my 1500points target list but my force painted to date is exactly 1000points. Thus i thought it was about time i stopped promising an army photo and delivered one! So with out further ramblings here is my Imperial Fists army to date:

Captain Tiberius Vallarn (Pedro Kantor), 5 Sternguard Veterans, 20 Tactical Marines, 5 Scouts, Venerable Dreadnought & Drop Pod.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=88240&stc=1&d=1272533663

Apologies for the poor picture quality. From here i will be bringing in 2 Landspeeders, 2 Predators, 2 Rhinos and a Razorback to get me to my 1500pts target.

As i plan to build, spray and paint my armour in batches it may be a while, a few weeks or so, until i have another update for the Project Log, so until then thanks for all your support so far :)

Rhino APC x2

Pictured below are 2 Rhinos from the 5th Battle Company, attached to the 1st and 2nd Tactical Squads. The rhino APC is the work horse of the, massively versatile and able to opperate on a variety of fuel types the Rhino is easily worth its salt in any force.

Note that both of these Rhino display chapter insignia and smaller squad and company insignia, this is at the insistance of Captain Vallarn. Vallarn believes that the codex teachings of dispalying squad insignia is tactically redundant and assits the enemy in targeting treats and specific squads. Thus Vallarn encourages a more generic theme to the transports in his company.

Yellow Armour: Chaos Black Undercoat, Spray 1 coat of Iyanden yellow, spray 2 coats of Bubonic Brown, carefully paint Devlan Mud wash into all recesses and armour shadow lines, tidy with Bubonic brown, then glaze whole model with a watered down wash of golden yellow.
Black: Chaos Black with adeptus battle grey highlight.
Metal: Boltgun Metal, washed with Devlan Mud & Badab Black
Mud: Scorched Brown & Graveyard Earth
Exhaust Soot: Adeptus Battle Grey & Chaos Black
Weathering/Scuffs: Mythril Silver

The transports are great Petay! I like that you've added the extra details, such as the towing hooks on the front of each vehicle, the FW turret fits in really well too!
Clever thinking with the company and squad insignia fluff, very clever indeed!

Standard kit really, all comes in the box! I think the extras are as essential as the chapter icons to be honest. Thanks for the support fella.

those look terrific petay! i really like the backfire marks around the exhaust.
i just got a vindi an pred an hope to get them looking that ace!

i think the addition of weathering powders will make a big difference, i would strongly suggest usign them. i'm sure your armour will look grand fella.

Aside from the Vexus Crusade my Imperial Fist's have seen battle against an all too familiar enemy:

Initial Engagement - First Blood!

Managed to take my initial 1000points into battle on Wednesday, called in at Warhammer World for a couple of hours with Cpt_Baughan. From random selection we played 2 objective missions, both resulting in a draw against the formidable forces of the Word Bearers.

It should be noted that Cpt_Baughan is somewhat of a Nemisis for me on the battle field as he seems to win approximately 75% of our encounters, thus with a result of 2 games giving 2 draws i am happy with the forces performancethus far!

Confrontation - Baptism by Fire!

With the enthusiasm of the previous day Cpt_Baughan and I agreed on another round of combat yesterday afternoon, eager to try and maintain a reasonable combat record with the army we agreed on 1120points (everything i have painted & posted in the log thus far). The initial mission was Capture & Control and resulted in a loss for the Son's of Dorn.

The second mission played was from the Battle Missions Book and was Suprise Attack, Cpt_Baughan manned his defences with vigour and prepared for my armoured assault. Sadly for the Son's of Dorn a combination of poor target priority in the first turn and the dice gods smiting lady luck, left me with a failing assault which was eventually crushed by the forces of Chaos.

Thus with 4 games played my Imperial Fists are sitting at a rather disappointig W:0 / L:2 / D:2 Hopefully future games will be prove more fruitfull!

Your IF's are really kicking it up a gear with the quality of painting, especially with yellow.

It's a colour that i'll be honest, intimidates a lot of painters, and your approach to painting it is very good. I assume you used a airbrush to paint the yellow?

What are you getting next for this army? Or are you not expanding it past 1500pts?

Great again mate, good luck with more. I look forward to it

This might be useful for you, that or you could try the pastal method i have seen used model railway forums, if you go with the dry brushing method (because i admit i didnt look as closely as i could have) you certainly need to add some green into the mix, i think i did mine vermin fur, then dry brushed seom gobling green and then some snakebite leather.

The Emperor's Finest

"The Emperor commands us. Dorn guides us. Honour sheilds us. Fear our name, for it is vengeance."
- from the teachings of Rhetoricus

Today was indeed a glorius day for my Imperial Fist forces under my command: Facing off once again against the traitor Word Bearer & Nurgle forces of cpt_baughan in two missions the Son's of Dorn came through victorius in both.

1. The first a 'Seize Ground' mission with 4 objectives, the final result being:
Imperial Fists 2 - 1 Word Bearers

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=89156&stc=1&d=1273826499

2. The second being a 'All-Round Defence' mission, from the battle missions book, lasting 6 turns and fending off the enemies assault despite massive losses to both sides.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=89155&stc=1&d=1273826499

All in all a good day, bring the Imperial Fist's combat record to a nicely balance: W:2 / D:2 / L:2

All i will say is unless your driving your tanks through deserts (in which case that really dosnt seem the right tone of brown) a tank is bound to drive over some sort of green, be it grass, small plants, etc.

Im not saying you smear it all over the sides either ;)

Thanks very much fella, i am intending to have my predators fairly balances and working as a pair, each with a turret mounted twin linked lascannon and sponson heavy bolters, i also chose this configuration for aesthetics!

Looking really good. Clearly you've got a great understanding of weathering. The yellow looks awesome without being to glaring. Mustard is the way to go.

Definately, i am not a huge fan of the bright yellow idea, but the mustardish colour works nicely. I feel it lends well to a grittier and more war-torn aesthetic.

Predator Annihilators

MkIIc Predator Annihilators with heavy bolter sponsons, this loadout is favoured by Captain Vallarn for its versatility, suited to both anti-tank and anti-infantry roles. The predators usually opperate in pairs on the battle field, ensuring that they are able to deal with most threats unaided.

Shown here are the armoury's first and second vehicles from the 3rd tank squadron.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=89839&stc=1&d=1274603389

For these tanks i opted to use the baal predator front plate and heavy bolter side sponsons, the side sponsons have a lower support arm making them more secure and robust. The turret is from forgeworld's MkIVc predator kit. Also note the engine intake panels on the lower rear quarters, also from the baal predator kit.

On the whole i am pretty happy with these tanks, even if the photography has let me down a little.

The Predators look ace Petay, alot more deserving of the higher front armour value. How did you go about up-armouring the front if I may ask?

That was indeed the plan, the front plates are straight from the baal predator kit, as are the sponsons with lower support and refigured heavy bolters. The baal predator kit has some really great parts to be stolen for more deserving chapters :p

Brother Sergeant Vitruviuan Kanus

Brother Sergeant Vitruviuan Kanus is the most competent tank commander in the Imperial Fists Chapter, he is the foremost practitioner of armoured warfare amongst his peers and his skill is rumoured to rival that of Antaro Chronus, of the Ultramarines. A master of mechanised combat Kanus has a long and distinguished service record that includes hundreds of confirmed kills against all manner of enemies. For his actions in the battle for Pevoria City and the siege of the Fortress of Sigismund Kanus was awarded the title, 'Spear of Dorn', a pre-heresy title that further likens him to his Ultramarines rival.

Assigned to the Vexus Crusade by Captain Lysander, Kane's mastery of mechanised warfare has been employed to deadly effect alongside Vallarn's headstrong tactics and aggresive deployment of his Battle Company.

Spot on fella, Kanus' left arm is indeed a regular plastic one, just from the regular tank crew parts. He will most likely ride atop of a Land Raider once i come to getting one, or perhaps he will crew an apocalypse based treat, i yet to decide. Glad you like him none the less, thanks fella.

the conversion of the space hulk termi looks great, but one question; why is there a throne in the middle of a grassy knole?

I decided not to read into it that much, i wanted to use him as an objective and i wanted to tie him in with my other models, hense the same basing style.

I placed an order for the marine casulties today, so with any luck they'll be here and painted in a week or so. Perhaps you are right, the dead marines could be an omen, lol, or simply a result of my poor tactics and previous command errors!! Pleased you like what i've produced so far.

Land Speeder 001

Shown here in operation with the 7th Assault squad, 5th Battle Company on Vexus IV fullfilling a Tank Hunter role. Commander Vallarn prefers to allow the assault sergeants free reign over their targetting and fire co-ordination, opperating their land speeders in pairs on tank hunting runs.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=90232&stc=1&d=1275311707

Favouring the singular armourment of a multi-melta the land speeders are used as a primary strike weapon, deepstriking onto enemy armour and annihilating them at close range.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=90233&stc=1&d=1275311707

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=90234&stc=1&d=1275311707

Note the kill tally on the rear panels of the land speeder, boasting an impressive 7 confirmed kills on enemy armour.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=90235&stc=1&d=1275311707

In regard to basing, i am intending to use 60mm bases with a clear plastic flying stalk, i am not a fan of the regular flying bases. 60mm bases ordered today with the space marine casulties, so within a week or so i hope to have this speeder and the second, which is currently WIP, complete.

Excellent stuff Petay - really good use of technique to weather the yellow.

Always truck me that the Imperial Fists (being a siege chapter in the fluff) would keep fighting no matter what the condition of equipment and weaponry. They would then probably punish themselves with the "pain glove" (read Space Marine and the Inquisition War by Ian Watson - the Fists apparently also like to etch drawings and scripture into their own bones).

Keep at it!

The truth of the matter is that the actual landing of Imperial force upon Vexus IV took place in the twilight hours of +137 when 25 modified Sentinels of the Vandoland engineer forces, were landed in the Woods of Gorta, on an area of land known as the “Gortan Plateau”. 25 Sentinels along with supporting engineers were despatched, with a small contingent of Vandoland infantry and both Imperial Fist and Black Templar Marines. The landing site itself is situated approximately 140km North East of the Fortress of Sigismund and 95km North West of the main city of Gorta, where it was believed a garrison of enemy troops was positioned. Under the cover of darkness, the Imperial forces landed and began clearing a landing site for the heavier armour and eventually the Titans of the Legio Victorum.

It had to be assumed that their presence would be detected by enemy forces and that they would scramble a force to repel the Imperial attack. Thus it was important that the Loyalists prepared as quick as possible. Scouts of the Imperial Fists 5th company were sent to search the area for any immediate enemy threat, whilst the engineers began clearing the woodland. The trees that were knocked down would not go to waste though. All material removed would be used to fortify the landing site, as planned by Captain Vallarn. By 1900, 4 square kilometres had been all but wiped clean of trees and rocks and the clearance team began pushing forward into the forest, the Imperial Forces began their landing in earnest.

By midday on +138, a large enough area was now cleared to allow the first of the heavy armour to land. The primary detail being the great Basilisk artillery tanks. They would dig in and remain in place throughout most of the campaign. Fortified defensive positions had already been erected for the great artillery batteries to be strategically placed, allowing a slight overlap in their arcs of fire. With the Imperial forces constantly landing on the planet, Black Templar forces including Castellan Throgus, made planet fall for a war council with the Vandoland generals and senior offices of the Imperial Fists.

Multiple sightings of the enemy had been made by the scout forces, but no patrols had been engaged due to superior numbers and at times armour. There were various locations of tank traps, mine fields and barbed wire that had been relayed back to the HQ, to be taken into account. Unfortunately it was one of these minefields that would lead to the first major engagement upon Vexus IV.

A squad of Vandoland 159th rifleman were carrying out a general perimeter patrol, just into the woods of Gorta. Unknown to them at the time, another minefield had been detected by the scout squads, but had not yet been fully acknowledged. This mine field was located within the Vandoland sector of patrolling, Gamma Beta 3, and was the location of the first Imperial casualties upon Vexus IV, when the squad of riflemen stumbled into the minefield, one unfortunate trooper stepped on an anti-personnel mine, trigger a chain reaction with the shrapnel from the blasts shredded the remaining riflemen. The noise from the explosions bounced along the Rocky Mountains and was the first signal to rebel forces that the Imperial forces had arrived. They would soon retaliate.

Imperial and Rebel forces converged on the location to investigate; the resulting fire fight was the first engagement on Vexus IV. Both scout parties took casualties, but withdrew before any further support arrived.

The landing site was now a fortified field base, hundreds of meters of Aegis defence lines, ditches and raised emplacements circled the land fields and myriad of temporary structures. By the late evening the defences were close to completion, a further batch of Imperial Fists Marines being flown down to assist, along with some additional Templar forces. By now over a quarter of the Vandoland forces were planet side and light to medium armour was arming and preparing for the battle to come, it would still be another 12 hours until heavy armour or Titans could be landed. By now Captain Vallarn, Castellan Throgus and the senior Vandoland officers had been in deep discussion about their next move to retake the fort. Patrols were constantly being carried out by all forces involved and the scout squads were still probing the surrounding area. It would be but a few short hours until the first major battle on Vexus IV would play out.

The first sighting of mass enemy movement was by an Imperial Fists Scout squad, who relayed the information back to the command post, the defenders made ready with an estimated 90 minutes until the rebels reached the land site. At just after 0300 on +139 the enemy army came into sight of the main Imperial positions and the defence of ground zero officially began.

The rebels possessed far more heavy armour, but the Imperial forces were dug in and had over 150 Astartes, furthermore their defences had been built by the Imperial Fists themselves. At the first sighting, the artillery of the Vandoland regiments opened fire, dropping shells on the incoming enemy forces. Within the first few minutes they had managed to destroy 3 of the enemy Russ’ and a handful of fully laden Chimera’s. Though at the same time, the scout squads reported further troops moving towards the defences. Numbers came back suggesting around 90 tanks and thousands of troops were closing in. Castellan Throgus himself stated it would take “The strength of the Emperor to repel such forces”, but he knew, of course, that the Imperial forces present possessed such strength. This would be the last heard from the scout squad, as shortly after this report all contact was lost and it was presumed they had been spotted and were now KIA.
Heavy weapons were wheeled into fixed positions and would be manned by the Vandoland forces. The Imperial fists also held a certain amount of heavy weapons and had been tasked by Castellan Throgus to take down as many armoured vehicles as possible, whilst his own Black Templar forces would concentrate on the infantry and, should they get that close, close combat fighting.

After the destruction of a handful of Chimera’s, the rebel troops took to foot. They had obviously never seen firsthand the skill of the Space Marines and would soon regret abandoning their armoured transport. The enemy tanks attempted to retaliate to the artillery fire, but the fortifications held strong and the accuracy of the Vandoland artillery regiments could not be bested. The kill zone that was cleared in front of the Imperial defences was filling up quickly with armour and infantry. A little under 30 minutes after the engagement had begun enemy artillery, based to the South East in Gorta City, honed in on the landing site.

The gap between the two forces was quickly closing, tracked vehicles moving quickly across the open plains, but unable to take any kind of cover when the main bulk of the firing started. The only cover the infantry would have were their own vehicles and when they hit the tank traps, they would have to attempt to cover the ground with almost no cover at all. It was possible that they would see the futility in this task, but hoped by Vallarn and Throgus, that they would indeed attempt to cross. In the process, the Imperial forces would wipe out a significant number of enemy troops.

Further reports were coming in from the scouting parties that more and more rebel forces were inbound to the landing site; it seemed that the enemy were more than happy to throw their full weight behind this initial attack. A decision which Captain Vallarn was more than happy with. By now both forces were within effective firing range and the rebel artillery was pounding the defensive positions. Enemy aircraft swept in low over the valley, carrying out strafing runs on the Imperial positions. Imperial anti-aircraft batteries opened fire, attempting to bring the heavily armed craft down.

The perimeter tank traps were doing their jobs well and many of the enemy tanks and armoured personnel carriers grinding to a halt. The rebel infantry gathered around their tanks, fearful of advancing without their protection, further more the rebel artillery was still pounding away at the Imperial lines. The artillery was causing serious problems to the Imperial defences, to remedy the situation Castellan Throgus ordered in air support A squadron of Thunderhawk Gunships dropped in from high orbit tasked with eliminating the artillery somewhere in the direction of Gorta City.

By now the enemy force was close to the front line of Imperial troops. Rebel tanks opened fire with their ferocious guns and started blasting great chunks out of the Imperial defences, but they were holding strong. The anti-infantry defences were causing the enemy hordes great difficulty, giving the Vandoland forces more than enough time to mercilessly cut them down with disciplined volleys of las fire. Eventually the rebel tanks broke through; the lead Leman Russ rose up high before crashing down over the first defensive line, straight into a ditch. With its tracks unable to grip and its turret unable to traverse enough to engage the Imperial Forces, a quick blast from a multi-melta finished it off, the shells in the hull igniting and firing off in all directions. To the east side of the line 3 squads of rebel troops managed to push through with their armoured Chimera’s before disembarking and laying into the Vandoland defenders. They managed to cause mass carnage before they were pushed back, but only momentarily, as they soon returned, using grenade launchers to slowly creep their way further behind Imperial lines, blasting away at the Imperial troops, who couldn’t get a foothold to repel them. Rapidly relocating 2 squads of Black Templar’s reinforced the line and managed to push back the enemy offensive, slaughtering the rebel troops in brutal hand to hand combat.

It had been almost 6 hours since the engagement began and reports were still coming in of rebel forces converging on the landing site. It seemed as if a never ending tide of rebel troops were looking to win the war in one hardcore offensive. They nearly succeeded.

10 Hours after the attacks had started, the Imperial forces were still holding, the line was spread thinner than planned and troops had fallen back to secondary positions in several places, but was holding none the less. At the west end of the line, rebel tanks managed to break the line, within minutes they had caused absolute havoc, targeting and engaging landing craft and ammunition stores. With the Vandoland forces overwhelmed, ill equipped to deal with such heavy armour behind their own lines, it fell to the Imperial Fists to deal with the rebel tanks.
The Imperial defence plan was simple, the Vandoland regiments would man the line, with the Stormtroopers and Astartes spread out to counter attack and bolster the line as and when they were needed. The rebel tank break through was one such occasion, as was the Black Templar’s earlier counter attack. The nearest troops to the rampaging rebel tanks were 15 tactical marines and 5 devastator marines of the Imperial Fists 5th Company under the command of Veteran Marcus Agrippa, a Sternguard sergeant from the 1st Company.

Moving with practised precision Sergeant Agrippa barked orders and the tactical marines moved in on the rebel tanks, peppering the armoured behemoths with bolter fire and darting from cover to cover. Recognising the threat presented by the advancing Astartes the tanks re-evaluated their plan and moved to eliminate the Astartes forces, wheeling around and grinding down on the tactical marines’ position, exactly as Agrippa had hoped they would. One after another the tactical-demi squads fell back, covering their retreat with bursts of bolter fire. Meanwhile the devastator squads had moved to out flank the armoured vehicles, the distraction supplied by the tactical marine giving them time setting up their lascannons and multi-meltas.

As the lead tank drew level with the devastator’s position, a super heated burst from a pair of multi-meltas turned the tanks left side to a semi-molten slurry, immobilising the vehicle. Taking this as a cue, the other devastators opened fire with their lascannons on the second and third tanks, the powerful weapons punching holes in the thick plasteel armour of the rebel tanks. The second tank, seemly un-phased by the impact fired on the devastator’s position, killing two of the marines. The remaining three devastators rapidly dispersed, relocating before the tank could fire again. Leaping onto the armoured column the tactical marines set about destroying more of the rebel tanks, forcing krak grenades into hatches and exhausts and leaping clear before they detonated. With the devastators repositioned the multi-meltas fired up again, incapacitating 2 more rebel tanks, leaving only two. 4 tactical marines clambered over the tank krak grenades in hand, when the tank exploded in a blinding explosion, the other tank having fired directly at its comrade to destroy the Astartes infantry. With only one tank remaining the last devastator marines levelled his lascannon and fired, the energy beam punching a hole in the tank and detonating the ammunition stores, the explosion marking the end of the rebel tank incursion.
With the line holding and the majority of the rebel armour destroyed or immobile the battle turned into a massacre of the traitor infantry. With scout teams between the landing site and Gorta City reporting that the traitor forces amassed were all they had committed, Castellan Throgus committed all his Templar’s into the fray, cleaving through the rebel horde like a blade through flesh. The remaining traitor armour was quickly eliminated by Vandoland tank companies, now operational and lending their firepower to the battle, and Astartes Land Speeders, sweeping along the flank and picking off remaining tanks.

With the death toll already sitting higher than hoped, Castellan Throgus’ counter attack was a refreshing change of pace; with the enemy tanks all but eliminated the battle was swinging quickly in the Imperium’s favour. The Black Templars, particularly their hulking dreadnoughts made short work of the infantry they encountered, assault cannons and heavy flamers cutting and scorching swathes into the enemy formations. A squad of heavy infantry, brought their weapons to bear on the Castellan cutting his way towards them, their auto cannon fire striking his chest plate and felling him, shaking off the disorientation of the impact Throgus rose to his feet, bellowing “The Emperor Protects”, his narrow escape causing the Imperial forces to double their efforts with increased vigour and cheers.

With Castellan Throgus leading the counter attack, Vallarn set about organising a cleanup operation, assigning priority targets and co-ordinating Vandoland infantry advances. The enemy had lost the field and would be whittled down; each pocket of resistance would be methodically wiped out by the Imperial forces. The battle had raged for a little under 21 hours, the day had been hard fought and the butcher’s toll was high, but as darkness fell on day +140 of the Vexus Crusade, the victory cry went up over the Gortan plateau and the Defence at Ground Zero was officially over. From here the Imperial Forces would reinforce their perimeter and repair the defences, but if all went to plan their next engagement would be in front of the walls of the Fortress of Sigismund.

Landspeeder 002

The second landspeeder of the 7th Assault Squad, again fitted with a multi-melta for tank hunting duties.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=90492&stc=1&d=1275736031

The shere quantity of scrapes and paint chips landspeeders suffer from whilst on campaign are testament to the speed and danger the crew face manouvering at high speeds and engaging enemy armour on the field of battle.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=90493&stc=1&d=1275736031

The gunner pictured below, is breaking procedure by not wearing a helmet, a common occurance amongst landspeeder crew who prefer to visually sight in on their prey and feel the atmospherics, wind and battle field conditions first hand.

I am expecting my clear 'ball & socket' joints for the bases in the post this week, so will endeavour to take another photograph of the landspeeders in the week on finished bases.
I then plan on getting another army photograph taken with the full 1500pts army laid out.

Thanks again for the comments, c&c and continued support folks :)

Assault Squad Veteran Sergeant Thrace

Veteran Sergeant Thrace, 8th Assault Squad, 5th Company. A power house of a marine Thrace truly is a God of war, spearheading 5th Company's assaults where his brute strength can be applied most directly. Under the command of the unorthodox Captain Vallarn, Thrace boasts the title of Company Champion, an honour that has been bestowed upon him for 17 consecutive deployments, it should be noted that this is more than any other marine in the present Company.

Thrace wears MkVII 'aquila' pattern power armour with a heavily modified helmet, rumoured to be of a similar style to that worn by the first Emperor's Champion Sigismund during the defence of the Emperor's Palace. Thrace proudly displays the crux terminus on his left shoulder pouldron infront of the chapter symbol, indicating his status as a veteran.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=90549&stc=1&d=1275816185

The Iron Halo displayed upon Thrace's jump pack is a symbol traditionally awarded to marines who are proven strategists and great leaders, although arguably not the former it is without doubt that Trace is a combat leader.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=90550&stc=1&d=1275816185

Thrace's power fist previously belonged to Captain Vallarn, and was gifted to him upon his initial selection as Company Champion. Dispayed on the right knee pad is Thrace's squad number and on his left the Company number.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=90551&stc=1&d=1275816185

The Vexus Crusade badge is displayed on the side of Thrace's jump pack, a tradition more normally associated with crusading chapters such as the Black Templars.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=90552&stc=1&d=1275816185

For those interested the helmet is from the new Venerable Dreadnought box, the power fist is from the Imperial/Crimson Fist Assault Upgrade pack and the small crux terminus symbol is again from the top or a scroll in the Venerable Dreadnought box. Hopefully Thrace's assault squad will be painted over the next week or so.

Thanks fella, a little unsure on squad loadout at the moment actually as i originally planned to take a power sword & metabombs on the sergeant, but i couldn't not use the gorgeous power fist i had, so the plan has kind of gone out the window. Thinking i'll probably keep them standard with a flamer maybe? any advice?

Landspeeder Squadron

Under the command of Captain Vallarn the 5th Battle Company predominately favours mechanised warfare, Vallarn favours having his assault squads mounted in Land speeders for support, more often than not providing a tank hunting role.

I'm extremely new around here, but I've been dabbling in painting space marines for a number of years. I'm starting a new army of Imperial Fists, specifically the 5th co., and I stumbled upon this link. I really admire the details you've put into your work.
So, here's my question if you don't mind: Where can I find info regarding authentic squad & campaign markings for Imperial Fists? I'm sure I could find this in the "How to Paint Space Marines" book, but is there a decent site?

Thank you, its nice to know the little details don't go un-noticed. The black library print on demand book 'Insignium Astartes (http://www.blacklibrary.com/Exclusive-Products/Print-on-Demand/Insignium-Astartes-Print-On-Demand.html)' is your friend, aesthetically it looks a little dated now but its accurate and a great resource for squad markings, shoulder pad variations and the like.

I've said it before, but here it goes again - very very very nice work mate, very nice indeed. Its great to see a 'normal' marine army get so much love and to have focus on the basics in terms of army choice. I really like the chioce of a mustardy yellow as well, very nice grim feel to them while still keeping the edge of nobility and pride that Fists should have.
