View Full Version : Best units for combat orientated High Elves

I'm adding the finishing touches to my 40k blood angels and thinking about Fantasy right now. I want to do high elves with some nifty conversions, for instance spearmen using phoenix guard models with plastic HE spear and dark elf shield for those circular slits to fit the spear in, I made a test model and it looks nice.

I want my army to be a combined force of infantry and cavalry. I'm not going the magical route so its just one level 1 wizard with 2 scrolls with his +1 to dispel, anybody who loads up on anti-magic against me will find he wasted a lot of points. I'll use a sensible amount of missile units too, but their not my main emphasis. I've been out of fantasy game for about a year now, I need to know what a good army composition is for, say, a 1500 point game.

My current idea is:
*One or two 10-man archers units, or perhaps some white lions.
*Two 5-man silver helm squadrons on each flank
*Two Foot regiments of some sort
*Bolt thrower or two

I'm not sure what infantry to use or whether my idea of the units ties together well, the role of my commander is undefined at the moment. I know that I want strong combat capability, but not tied up in one unit.

If it's combat you want then you should take a small to medium sized unit of swordmasters, the true hard hitters of a high elf army.

Looking at your list (and I'm speaking as a warhammer commander, not a high elf one), you seem to have a fairly good idea. Pretty decent combat, good ranged offensive and enough magic defense to see you by. One thing is archers are meant to be bad, I don't know exactly why myself, but someone will say no doubt...

I am a great fan of Core units; you seem to have a few in this army. I'd be very tempted to have at least one unit of spears, even if it's role is to secure a table quarter late in the battle.

Okay heres my list:

High Elves 1500 points
Commander, 133 points
Sword of Might; longbow; shield; dragon armour; Sacred Incense.

Commander, 136 points
Swordmaster; Longbow; dragon armour; Talisman of Protection.

Mage, 135 points
Level 1 wizard; 2 dispel scrolls.

5 Silver helms, 136 points
Champion; musician; heavy armour and shields.

5 Silver helms, 136 points
Champion; musician; heavy armour and shields.

10 Archers, 130 points
Light armour.

19 Swordmasters,of Hoeth, 305 points
Bladelord with Amulet of the Purifying Flame; musician and standard bearer with the Lion Standard.

19 Phoenix Guard, 385 points
Keeper of the Flame with Blessed Tome; musician and standard bearer with the Banner of Arcane Protection.

1496 Points

Since I have minimum magic defence I've equipped the two big regiments with trinkets to keep them safer from magic, and the phoenix guard have the sacred incense on a commander to keep them safer from shooting. Silver helms act as flanking cavalry, but they won't be neutralised by a few archer shots like reavers. Archers are just going hold a table quarter mostly, I gave them light armour since I'm going to use the shadow warrior models for them.

What do you think?

give a commander liongaurd then u have a stubborn unit as a special choice

was looking good until u mentioned phoenix guard, they are far too expensive and well not that good. i mean they cause fear because they dont talk, wow im so scared(i mean who couldnt be bothered writing a decent reason why they should cause fear). but i have to say that not much in the HE list can hit harder that white lions with ur general(hopefully the one with swordmaster) on the charge. thing is team the blessed tome on the champion with ur commanders leadership and units around him will test on 10 while the lions would be stubborn on leadership 9(so they aint going anywhere) and in following rounds of combat the general will kill more before any thing can kill ur rather frail white lions(light armoured elite troops, why couldn't alessio write the list?, then it would be pure cheese)

anywho nice list but do something about the phoenix guard and u'll win more games

Light armour for Archers? Are you insane? Or do you own models with armour? If you give an Archer L.A., he'll cost as much as a Swordmaster. Do the math...

In a 1500 points list, I'd say that you don't need that big hth-regiments. 14-17 would do. Where are your Commanders place in the line? Will they advance with the hitters, or sit back with the Archers? If they're supposed to fight, drop the bows. Costs too much and doesn't do squat if you intend to advance with them (and as they look like they're kitted out for combat, I'd say they belong in the fighting regiments).

Ten Archers in a combat list is about as useful as a slap in the face with a wet towel imo. Sure, someone will eventually lose an eye but its a lot of effort for not much pay back. Giving them light armour is icing on the cake of redundantness. Definitley drop the armour - I'd personally drop them altogether.

I would also drop the Phoenix Guard off a cliff. Imo, they are hideously over priced and not really that effective in combat. Drop them and get some spearmen. High Elf Spearmen are very good against other infantry in my experience. Phoenix Guard are just good at looking pretty. By dropping the archers, Phoenix Guard and maybe the second commander, you can get some Spearmen who will do a much better job - you should probably be able to afford two units.

Admittedly, I have a fairly jaundiced view of High Elves and haven't played in a while - play that army if you wish, you should win a few. But I think you'll find it an uphill struggle. The moment your Swordmasters and Phoenix Guard are gone, you're defeated. Your hopes are pinned on 40 very fragile bodies. Any reasonable commander should be able to bring either overwhelming missile fire or numbers on these units. Swordmasters are you best melee unit, but after that its Spearmen or in specialised cases White Lions - cavalry.

I think I will take more spearmen actually, I don't want to pay the dinero for 20 phoenix guard models either...
