This is not a topic on Assassins in Corsair units, but mainly a discussion of both the units.

The two main questions I have are relatively straightforward.

One: Would this setup of Assassin

Assassin with additional hand weapon, Touch of Death, Rune of Khaine, Black Lotus and Repeater Handbow 181

be completely pointless against Skaven? I can see it being a waste of points and upgrades seeing as I'm forfeiting getting Poisoned wounds to instead get a relatively high chance to get a Killing Blow or two. I think it's pointless since I doubt I'll be facing many multi-wound models I can KB anyway, and RnF models have such a crappy save that ignoring their AS seems a bit pointless.

Two: With these Corsairs

22 Black Ark Corsairs with 2 hand weapons, full command, 2 Handbows on Reaver and Sea Serpent Standard 273

would it be better fielding them 7x3 with 1 left over or 5x4 with 2 left over?
Also, please no "Drop the Corsairs for Warriors". I despise Warrior models (mainly the big hands) so I'll only use RxBs and Corsairs, among Harpies.

Sorry, it's quite late here and this has just been niggling in my mind.

I think that such an Assassin is going to be fairly useless against Skaven.

As for the corsairs, they are always fun to use 7 wide - 6 wide works also. But I always back mine up with a Cauldron of Blood, because 4 S3 attacks or 3 S3 KB attacks are fuuuuuuuun ;O

Yeah, I could just remove those Gifts to have lots of spare points.

Ah, okay. Do you think they'd do alright without a Cauldron though?

Not really, depending on what army you face, they're bait-able and they have a bunch of S3 attacks, not terribly menacing and not all that effective.

If you go with a Cauldron, you need to take units that benefit the most out of it:
Corsairs, Executioners, Witch Elves, Black Guards, Cold one Knights

Against Skaven, would an assassin with AHW, Rune of Khaine and Dark Venom work well? Cheaper than your suggestion, and capable of racking up a lot of CR against T3, weakly protected Skaven. Because once they break and lose their rank bonus, they won't be coming back. Even against a character, the 5-7 attacks may well be enough to kill.

Yes, but then wouldn't standard Poisoned attacks be better than rerolling 1s to wound anyway?

I thought Dark Venom was the one that gave double CR for wounds? That's the one I was talking about anyway.

Average 6 attacks, hitting on 3s, with reroll for hatred, should give 6 hits. One of these should be a KB. Of the other 5 you have S4 vs T3, so wounding on 3s, which should give you 3.33 wounds. Clanrats with HW and shield will have a 5+ save (after -1 to S4), so you should get around 2 kills plus the KB. Double that with the Dark Venom, and you have 6CR from your assasin alone. Enough to tip the combat very comfortably in your favour, and to get those rats running.

It only gives extra combat res in combat, in which case you might as well have killing blow.

No no no no no, I never said Dark Venom, I said Black Lotus.

Double CR for wounds is in challenges only. Good luck getting that against a skaven player!

First of all, I would like to know what do you intend to have your Assassin perform against a Skaven army. Assassins are very role specific with their Gifts of Khaine.

1) Clearing the Killzone (First Rank of the Opponent)
- Light Infantry
- Heavy Infantry
2) Dueling Champions
3) Sniping out Chariots/Dragons and high toughness creatures
4) Assasinating Characters

Second, what do you want your Corsairs to do? Their formation and upgrades varies for certain roles as well.

1) As an Anvil
2) As an Escort
3) As a Hammer

Uhh... I dunno, actually.

I'll take... Clearing the killzone for the Assassin (light infantry of course).

Being an escort/semi-anvil/hammer for the Corsairs.
