View Full Version : Best Bang for the Battleforce?

In your opinion, of the battleforces available currently, which one provides the best basis to start an army?

Personally I like the look of the Space Wolves one, but that may be just because I'm partial to the whole Drop Pod thing. Eldar provides a nice core of units too, without having too much that is useless.

Your thoughts?

I preffered the last ed Space wolf one :(. As to current? Hmm, can't say.

Wolves, all the way. 3 different units of ground pounders can be built (4 if you include wolf guard without terminator armor), and a drop pod. A couple boxes of Termies and a HQ and your ready to Rock n Roll.

Orks! 20 boyz, a truck, and 3 bikers! Almost Perfect.

Or Assault on Black Reach for the same price and you get more Orks...

I think the old Tyranid box was the best deal, but carnifexes are a bit devalued now (gamewise) so im not so sure.

Probably the Chaos one is a good contender since it has

Chaos Rhino
15 Chaos marines
8 Khorne Berzerkers
5 Possessed

50
Total value at the present: 74

It would be about 65-9 until the recent price hikes so buy it now before the battleforce gets changed or becomes more expensive.

Personally, I think the Tau battleforce is the best deal. Two full troops choices, a transport, an elites choice, and a potential for an HQ.

That said, the Marine and SW ones look pretty solid too.

Bang for buck, the Ravenwing is hard to beat. You get 6 bikes for the cost of the battleforce, and they throw in the attack bike AND a landspeeder for free.

And that doesn't even consider the insane amount of bits and stuff you get.

Simo429

got to say wolves

the amount of different units you can build is cracking

rune and wolf priests
lone wolves
wolf guard
blood claws
grey hunters
wolf lords

plenty of bits for customisation

Personally, I think the Necron battleforce is still one of the best.

Army composition-wise, you get 28 standard troops and a couple of fast attack choices that are either useful (Scarabs) or borderline auto-include (Destroyers).

Price-wise, the Destroyers alone are $60 worth of minis (god they're so expensive). Two battleforces is a great way to form the core of a Necron army, with you then adding other units in to taste.

For bitz resellers, the Ravenwing battle force is the best value for reselling, since those ravenwing sprues are in such high demand.

Black Reach is the best deal. By two, sell the bitz of the army you don't collect, and you end up with money in your pocket.

Ravenwing.

Necrons. You will use every single model they give you regardless of list. Unless you go 9 wraiths which has some popularity but is nowhere as effective as destroyer wing.

Eldar is a horrible battleforce.

Chaos would be good if they replaced the possessed with something else.

Dark Eldar isn't bad. It gives you troops transport and jetbikes which are handy still. I would buy one if I started up DE.

Imperial guard is great if you plan on bringing infantry platoons. I would pick up multiple sets however I don't play cadians for my guard. Probably one of the better sets.

Orks are just like guard. If just starting an ork army I would probably buy 2 boxes of black reach and then 2 battle forces. A great deal over all.

space marine one is decent. Its right in the middle ground for a codex. It brings units that are good but don't fit in a lot of lists as there are many that don't bring either scouts or assault marines.

Space wolves would have to be in the top 3 best battle forces.

tau are great however once again there are a lot of lists out there that do not take stealth suits or kroot. They aren't bad units and when starting out id use them since I have the models. The firewarrior squad lets you pick drones or transport which is nice too. Since I like both stealth suits and kroot I actually bought 2 of these. Plus its the only set that comes with an HQ.

Tyranids. I will be honest I don't play nids and am not sure what is good in their codex so this is just me taking a guess at how good it is. but 32 little buggers plus a full unit of gene stealers and warrior brood seems like a good deal. I recall people on here saying warriors are no good anymore and since the gaunts are split into both horm and term I am simply going to say if you want to start nids pick one up if you own nids already its not worth it.

So with the information above i would give the armies a ranking of

1: Necrons
2: Orks
3: Space Wolves
4: Guard
5: Tau
6: Space Marines
7: Nids
8: Dark Eldar
9: Chaos Space Marines
10: Eldar.

EDIT: forgot ravenwing battleforce. its definitely in the top 5.

The Ravenwing Battleforce saves ou around 29, making it a great deal. Plus, those RW bits sell very well on placed like Ebay.

Nids used to have one of the best before it was changed and the new codex came out. Much like the codex the new battle force is not terrible but not good either.

Black Reach.

Nothing else come close.

There is a lot of savings in there, for sure. If you don't play either Marines or Orkz though, and you already have a rulebook - you're looking at a load of either re-selling or trades.

I gave my Orkz to my cousin who was starting up - his brother did the same, and he got a respectable starting army for free. ;)

Best value for money is definatley Ravenwing, but I see it more as a means to expand on an existing army rather than the basis for a starting army - as was the original question.

For a good starter force - perhaps Tau, Dark Eldar or Space Marines for the quantity of decent troops you get.

My personal favourite has to be the Ork Battleforce though, as has been said, its nearly perfect. Couple it with the force from Black Reach and you have a very competent and flexible Ork horde in your hands!

If you mix the possessed legs with extra torsos and arms, the Chaos battleforce gives you another 5 chaos marines or berserkers to work with.

Tau is the only battleforce that allows you to field a legal army just from the box, so it's the best :shifty:

Nid one used to be sooo nice, but the new one is sorta meh... Its not horrible, i might pick one up because i need more gaunts but compared to the old one... >.< (Its a good thing i have one still unbuilt at my other home, well the fex is beeing magnetised at the moment... :) )

Ravenwing is very good however, even if your not doing an Angels army...

You may want to have a look at the Wayland games deals:

I think similar deals can be found for other armies (sort by price and go to the last page).

Has the ravenwing box got the new cut landspeeder or do they still have the old one with the uper body in 1 piece, the last one I brought about a year ago had the old cut and they are horrible due to the bad mould and warping

MajorWesJanson

Old one last I checked. Depends on when they produced it though, as I don't think they have packed new battleforces since before the new speeder came out.

My vote would be for Tau as #1, then Space wolves as #2, then Necrons as #3.

The Necron one is to me the best pug together one (with Tau being a close second) for starting up; Ravenwing seems to be the most value for money one.

AoBR is the best one though; especially if you want to do both armies :p

This is also possible with the Tyranid army by using one of the Warriors as a Tyranid Alpha(? the HQ Warrior choice).

My vote is on the Necrons.

Tyanid Prime. If you buy a warrior box that gets you a respectable unit.

Tau, Necrons, and 'nids hav really good boxes. Tau and 'nids because they're an army in a box, which is awesome for beginners; and Necrons because if you throw in a Lord you won't be needing anything else. Really, just buy three Necron Battleforces and you're pretty much set for the race; add specialist units where applicable, but I haven't seen a Necron list without Warriors (since you have to take them) and Destroyers (since you'd be dumb not to).

The Necron Battleforce is great because since Immortals, Flayed Ones, and Pariahs are all metal, and slowly but surely people are coming to their senses and realizing you DON'T need to take so many Necron Warriors to make a competitive list, the extra warriors and bits are great for converting and building your own Elite choices.

I don't know people are hating on the Eldar box. I'd prefer it if you got a full 10-man squad of Avengers instead of five, but overall it's not horrible and all you need is an HQ and you've got a legal army. Yeah, Guardians blow compared to everything else in the list, but c'est la vie.

Ravenwing battleforce works here as well, if you use land speeder to make master of Ravenwing.

Talos

They are only good value for money if you are going to use all the models.
I got AOBR as I play Orks and marines but I dont use any of the models bar the Dread and Ork warboss. The tac marine models are to boring for me to use and I dont use non assault Terminators. I use shoota boyz instead of sluggas and while the nobz are ok again I dont run a nobz squad so I just need powerklaw nobz which none in AOBR have.
I dont think I will ever use Deff koptas.

So yea if your lists use alot of the models in the battleforce go for it, but sometimes it is cheaper to just buy the units on there own if you know you arnt going to use a number of the battleforce ones.

27-04-2010, 20:06
I suppose with the Tyranid box set you could turn 2 of the warriors into Primes and the 3rd warrior you could leave off the legs and with a little bit of green stuff work turn it into a Zoanthrope - Doom easily enough. Not the greatest but not a bad start either with 2 HQs, an elite, and 3 troops choices (4 if you count rippers... gag)

I personally hate the imperial guard battleforce, I have 6 sentinals that i never use now! It would be so much better to just include a chimera and no platoon command or sentinel.

Tymell
27-04-2010, 20:16
I'd say Necrons, Chaos and Tau personally. Necrons gives you lots of warriors and destroyers, giving a firm core to your force; Tau gives a lot of models for the price, again setting you up well (and the crisis suit can become your commander if you wish); the Chaos one depends on what kind of force you want, but it's also solid. I'd love it better if it came with a Spawn though, just for the bitz it would give you to spread around.

For me, the Imperial Guard and Ork ones are some of the weakest, because they're both armies focused on large numbers of core troops, yet their battle forces feature very few of those.

Also, breaking them down by overall worth of the contents:

Dark Angels (Ravenwing) = 79
Space Marines = 78
Chaos = 76
Tau = 75.5
Imperial Guard = 74
Tyranids = 73
Necrons = 72
Dark Eldar - 70.5
Space Wolves = 70
Eldar = 70
Orks = 65

So yeah, the Ork one really could do with a bit more to bring it on par with the others. The lootas/burnas set would've made a nice addition IMO.

They did repackage the battleforce to the new boxes after the current LS was released, but whether the contents changed is uncertain, but a red shirt at GW said it's most likely that they did update the contents, but he himself finished collecting his RW before the switch.

Space wolves. You can make HQ, Elites and Troops out of the box. Still have loads of bits left over and get a 'FREE' drop pod. I worked it out that if you convert some of the models to represent the some of the special charactors and add Logan you can make a nearly 2000pts out of the box.

Ditto.

No one can compete pricewise (forget about the "bit reselling" factor) with the Ravenwing or Black Reach (ork-wise) deals.

Still, the BR marines aren't too shabby, either.

The second best army deal is past edition Tyranid. Even if they aren't so "ZOMG" anymore, a Carnifex is one heck of a models and it was a great deal, too bad it got replaced with a really lame one at a higher price.

SW does as well. the grey hunters box has enough pretty bits to make wold lords or wolf guard leaders. you could have 1-4 HQs, 2-3 troops, scouts, and an alpha strike drop pod.

I would, just for kicks, put all 4 HQs in the drop pod with 6 grey hunters. Then have 10 grey hunters on the table with the scouts coming in from behind.

grey hunters sprues are why it wins. A grey hunter box can make HQs, 2 types of troops and 2 types of elites (wolf guard or lone wolves)

The Ravenwing box still has the old ill-fitting speeder... as of March 2010 in Australia anyway. They could still be going through the 'old' stock from before the update. After all, how would we know? It was a 'newer' batch than my last Ravenwing box though, as it had oval bike bases in it instead of rectangle cavalry bases.

At least some of the contents vary in any case. Still great value.

I loved the old nid battleforce. I bought three of them to start up my army.
