View Full Version : Do dark elves' hydra's teeth count as magical attack?

The hydra's teeth from dark elves' army book doesn't clearly state that it counts as magical attack, but because it's enchanted item, I wonder whether it makes the teeth's attack magical or not, just like magic weapons.

Our gaming group considers magical items to have magical effects. The Hydra's Teeth would thus count as magical attacks.

It's an Enchanted Item, so it doesn't have BOUND properties (and ergo, able to be dispelled) but it's a standard Gift of Khaine- so yes, you're empowered by the Blood God to throw Enchanted Caltrops as magic attack.

They are magical but still utterly useless and overcosted when you realise you have to roll to hit twice then roll to wound. The first 1 in 6 chance to miss will completely negate the throw (you need to get a -2 to hit modifying to affect this roll though) then you get to roll to hit with WS2 (which is a 50% chance against WS4 or lower). Then if you do get some attacks through it is only S3 which is in most cases at best a 50% chance to wound then you throw in armour saves.

About the only time these things would be useful is to attack Teclis(or another Elf Mage) in a unit you really don't want to charge or maybe to attempt to take out a Necromancer in a tarpit you don't want to get stck fighting. I did the number once against Empire Swordmen and it came back with all 3 teeth killing aprox 3 swordsmen.

How about ethereal creatures such as Ghosts and Banshees?
It's a touch specific but in a situation where you could have two or three attacks with a magical weapon in close combat, here you've got (up to) 5d6 WS2 attacks that all hit. If ghosts, you can whittle down the unit to a manageable size and take the rest out with combat resolution.

It's an expensive tactic though and relies strongly on there being weak ethereal creatures in the army you're facing. Therefore not an item for an all comers army.

Ghosts and Banshees have WS0? Otherwise you have to roll to hit with the shooting then roll to hit again like close combat. Although this would be about the only case i can think of when they would be useful. That said you could get a Lvl2 Sorceress for a similar amout of points as a Noble with the Hydra's Teeth, which would be a much more useful choice (a single casting of Bladewind is actually better than using all 5 Hydra Teeth).

The other slightly useful thing it can do is bring chargers into short range of Rxbow units on a stand and shoot charge reaction and also can snipe out a champion in a charging unit. What's funny is that to get the a similer amount of damage as a pair of Handbows you need to throw 2 Hydra Teeth, which is the same points value, but the Handbows don't run out.
