View Full Version : Wife gave me $100. How do I spend it?

I have all the Codex Space Marines I will ever play. 8000 points or so.
I have 4000 points of Eldar that lose every time they touch ground.
I have 2000 points of Speed Freak orks in the box.
I have about 3000 points of Tau still in the box as well.

I just finished making a ton of terrain, and reworked my carry cases so I don't need storage.

I own new codexes for everything I think, plus Apoc, Reload, and IA Apoc and Apoc 2.

My group plays 2k to 3k point games plus Apocalypse games at high point levels, 20,000 per side last week.

What should I do with this $100 that fell in my lap tonight?

Save it for 6 months and buy some Inquisitor stuff.

Seriously though saving it like Caiphas suggested might not be a bad idea if you have a lot of stuff you have not even started yet like your orks and tau.

Well, for those of us suffering through allergy season, these rules are easy:

Chaos wargear. Freaking casts "Nurgle's Rot" on command to cover the entire freaking tabletop.

yup, the fact that you have armies in the box indicates the money is burning a hole in your pocket because you feel you should spend it on toys (even though you really don't need to, trust me, I too fall foul of Shiny New Model Syndrome, and there are only so many hours in the day for you to build and paint things!)

I'm firmly with Starlight on this one.

I was thinking maybe an Imperial Sector, but now I feel bad.

Heh. Don't.

As a man living with my ladylove as well, I'd go ahead and spend the 100 dollars on what I want for myself and say thank you with a flower. Maybe repay her when I get my wages as a nice gesture (by buying gifts or dinner of course).

In your case, sounds like you need some nice terrain. I gladly recommend the pre-painted terrain from Battlefront/Glaforce nine. They've got a fantastic set of 28mm gothic ruins/hills/tank traps you can get at very reasonable prices fromn Maelstromgames or flamesofwar.com.

Might be she gave you a hundred bucks but all the idealistic romantics around here aren't really sitting on all the info. Like how maybe prior to being offered a hundred bucks you bought her a car. For example. Or put her through college.

Ahh, but was it a statistically significant sample? ;)

I'm with the others. You don't need more unpainted stuff. Spend Invest it on her, it'll have a much better rate of return than anything else....

EDIT.

Sliganian, you forgot a third group. The in a relationship with another gamer... It has some benefits, and some problems- the cat jumping on the painting table, for instance. And somehow any hobby stuff we got together ended up being rather more useful for her than me, but I don't think that's a specifically gaming related issue....

sliganian
04-05-2010, 16:29
I think this is good time to point out a huge divide in the gaming community. One that is an 'elephant in the room' sort of issue, unspoken but known to all. This divide is between:

- The Unattached / Single Gamer (USG)
- The Attached / In Relationship Gamer (AG)

You know when the USG makes the call for everyone to come over for a game, but the AG says 'Sorry man, I got a family thing.', and all the USG's snicker about the AG being 'tied down' and having 'no freedom'?

Well, the painful truth for you USG's is this: When AG's 'have a family' thing to do in the evenings, that 'thing' is probably something far more fun than gaming. With their significant other, likely (but not necessarily) in a bedroom.

Us AG's let you think we are 'whipped' and will endure your 'Single Guy, I OWN my time!' attitude. We let you think this because letting you know what we AG's are ACTUALLY doing would be...well... awkward. Actually, it is out of courtesy for you USG's that we are not truthful with you USG's. We don't like to hurt your feelings. It would be just simply mean to point out your lonely condition to you.

EXAMPLE

USG: "Aw man! You missed an awesome game! Mephiston died to the Swarm Lord!"

Proper /Likely Response Exchange:

AG:" Damn! That sounded awesome! (look sad at ground)"
USG: "Ha! Sucker!"

Honest Response Exchange:
AG: "Neat. It was 'Stern teacher / Naughty Student' night at my place. We broke the headboard on the bed, scared the cat out of the room and my abs are sore today. My wife forgot how to speak properly for a good 5 minutes afterwards."

USG: *face flushes, gets embarassed* "Yeah, well, whatever...." *goes off to cry*

If it's not a test (in which case you really should buy those overpowered flowers (be fast, they'll surely get nerfed in next edition)), then you could spend it on terrain. Or even better, hobby material (paint + glue to build what you already have ! ). Or even better, since you have so much 40k stuff, you could try something new, like BattleFleet Gothic/Necromunda/Inquisitor (you can probably buy yourself one or two warbands/an entire fleet with 100k if you think it well), or other wargames that might be fun. Youcan try to find someone who plays it at your FLGS or something to get a demo game if you don't want to spend it right away.

You could split, some on WH40k and something on her. However, being married myself, and if my wife gave me $100 bucks its time to get a sitter, because I'm stuffing my face full of sushi and then watching a movie with a crap ton of explosions and guns. Like Iron Man 2. She can come too if she wants.

Whereas the truly married man knows this rarely actually occurs. And yes, I would definitively skip it for a game.

Comparing wargaming to spending time with your better/worse half is like comparing apples and hogs. Two entirely different things. One might end up eating the other though.

The man's already stated he's not going to spend it on her, so I don't see why these suggestions keep popping up. Does someone have a good, honest suggestion which does in fact not entail some sort of hopelessly romantic or sexually offensive suggestion? Seriously, I don't know which is more disturbing - folks thinking that re-spending it on some grand gesture is an investment or those expecting sexual returns in favour for a dinner or similiar?

I once again recommend you check out the pre-painted terrain from Galeforce Nine: http://www.gf9.com

Check out Store --> Battlefield in a box. Real quality stuff.

Beltane Bingo...
As effective as painting for getting various colours of paint on you, but rather more fun. $100 will nicely cover all your expenses for the preparations and the evening. And both of you can play if you wish to..

http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/edinburghandeastscotland/hi/people_and_places/arts_and_culture/newsid_8655000/8655823.stm are the BBC shots of the event. The game is, in the club afterwards, to collect every colour of body paint in use in the festival..

04-05-2010, 21:25
Dunno how far $100 gets you, what's that in real £?

I'd ignore the 'do something romantic' crowd: if my gf gave me cash it's to spend on myself, Ill spend MY money on her.

How about a nice big centerpiece model? The sort of thing everyone wants but might avoid buying.

bert n ernie
04-05-2010, 21:27
Wow. Certainly some advice I didn't expect. None the less useful though.

Well, if you do want to get her something keep some for yourself. A $20 gesture is not much different from a £100 one.

On the other hand, I'd suggest you buy a bloodbowl board and a team(or two?). If not go searching for a game you've always wanted to try, and if none tickle your fancy just buy that awesome model that would never fit into any of the armies you currently play, but you'd love to paint/convert.
Mine was the Inquisitor Lord Karmakov(guy sitting on a dreadnought).

Am I the only one thinking, "she is my wife, she's probably into me whether I spend the money on me or her"? :D

If you want to be 'sure' (of whatever), spend a smaller amount on a little gift for her, but spend the larger part on yourself. ;)

As for what, well, what about a little thing from Forge World as an eyecatcher to individualize one of your armies?
