View Full Version : Theory About New Trolls

I just bought the new troll boxed set today, and I must admit they are very nice looking. Thinking about the new rules for monstrous infantry being able to have ranks three models wide (from ULF's thread), I wonder if this new boxed set and the lack of stone troll bits is a hint of the loss of "customizable" trolls from the next incarnation of Orcs and Goblins. I, for one, would not miss the upgrades in the least. Keeping trolls simple (and hopefully, therefore, less expensive) would go a long way to making them a little more competitive.

Just a thought, I wonder what the rest of you Warseerites think.

Interesting idea.. could it just be that stone trolls are on their way though?

If they wanted to do that, they'd either make all the kinds in one mixed box/unit and not river trolls only, or they'd stick to the common (BfSP and metal varients) trolls, I believe. Besides, I like the upgrades, and what you're asking for (simple and cheaper trolls) already exist, you just don't buy a stone or river upgrade, and you're set. And they're going to be quite better with the new rules they get, all their attacks on two ranks, the crush them rule and ranks of 3. And the marvel is that the way the rule is worded, they should even be able to vomit from the back rank :p

I have the three metal river trolls, and I'm thinking about getting the new boxed set and combining all six together into one unit with two ranks of three per rank.

Do you think that this is a good idea in two senses:
1) do the old and new models look too silly / different next to each other
and
2) is it worth it tactically to have a second rank of river trolls for the points?

PS - Instead of x's and o's, why don't more people use smileys for their formation descriptions and battle reports?

By current rules I don't see much point in 2x3 Trolls, but by 8th ed rumours this should be a very good unit.
I don't have metal or plastic river trolls, but I have seen lots of pictures of both and I don't think they look that out of place together (older river trolls are thinner, but variety among trolls should be expected).

I wonder if 6 trolls in 2 ranks of 3 would all be able to use vomit attacks...

I now have the image of trolls vomiting over the heads of the front rank like some horrifying fountain. Thanks a lot, Urgat

You have included 7 images in your message. You are limited to using 6 images so please go back and correct the problem and then continue again.

Images include use of smilies, the BB code [img] tag and HTML <img> tags. The use of these is all subject to them being enabled by the administrator.

Trolls aren't particularly good fighters. I toyed around with them and came to the conclusion that in order to do anything productive on their own they'd need a unit of 8. Or preferably 7 with a hero.

They don't fight all that well, quite often their best option is vomitting which means they won't do more kills than trolls in the front rank. 3 kills max really isn't going to cut it.

So if you want the trolls to be a main unit, I say 7 trolls + hero in two ranks of 4. If you want them to be a support unit for combined charges, get 3 or 4 in a single rank and keep them cheap(ish).

back on topic to the thread - There has always been more than 1 species of troll available and I don't see that going anywhere! River Trolls - for sure, they are plastic and look amazing.
But the BFSP troll is clearly designed for use as a common or stone troll, and they did those excellent metal sculpts of the new trolls which were based around the BFSP troll - so it'd be hard to see how they would retire that range.

1. Battle for Skull Pass will be retired with the new edition release.

2. It was surprising for a new box of trolls not to have options for both/all existing types of trolls. I can't fathom why GW would choose not to have both types in the one box if they could have designed the plastics to work that way.

3. How many people will buy metal trolls when there are plastic trolls available? It becomes expensive for GW to maintain the line if it is hardly selling.

4. GW are very unlikely to produce another plastic sprue for stone trolls. It just isn't the way that they operate.

Conclusion: Stone trolls look vulnerable.

Hope so. Rumours say: one attack from second rank, so probably legal.

6 S5 attacks without armoursave, great against small heavy cavalry units and steam tanks :D

Every piece of the river troll models clearly says 'river troll'. In order to release one box able to cope with all three troll types you'd need very generic troll torsos and arms, with extras added on to try and distinguish the types (different heads, a fin or two to glue on and maybe different weapons).
It's possible to do this, but the end result wouldn't look anywhere near as good as the new box set does.

Maybe stone trolls and common trolls will suffer until they get a plastic box, but they won't be discontinued completely and are sure to see a comeback later.

Well, good thing I play WOC so I get to play with trolls Yay! As for fluffy customisation, I always thought that you can either paint the throw a different color as represetation or just make a few simple conversions.

My sincerest appologies about the usage of too many smileys. I was unaware.
I second the opinion that it will be at least forever - and - a - day before we see plastic stone trolls, regardless of how frickin' sweet that would be. Snottlebocket, I DO have a unit of eight of THOSE metal goof-balls!. Thanks forthe advice, all.

If they could only make one plastic set for a certain troll though, I'm glad that they chose the river troll. They look awesome, and they make me want to play a troll-under-the-bridge scenario of some kind. :)
