Well, I've spent enough time simply browsing this forum, so it's time for me to actually show some of my work! The minis below are part of my 5th Company tactical squad, and part of the longer project that will be my completed 1,000pt. army.

Apologies for not having more pics, it's just that I'm not the greatest photographer, so I posted the ones that turned out the best. Feedback is appreciated, and more photos of my Space Marines will be here soon!

These fricking ROCK!!!!!

I love the contrast, blacklining thru yellow all the way to white. No issues seeing these on the tabletop!

Nice. No crits, just asspats.

Thanks for the compliments FearFrost! :)

Now here is a pic of a lascannon gunner from the same squad:

21-02-2006, 16:40
I am completely in love with your painting style! I love the way the dark areas, are really dark, and the sudden (but not in a bad way) change to light.

My favourite part though, has to be the chest eagles, in particular, the bald guys'. They are spectacular!

21-02-2006, 16:42
Those pictures make me wanna go and make some instant custard and have sex with it.

Love 'em. The fisrt time I've ever liked an Imperial fist army scheme.

21-02-2006, 16:46
dude you are one amazing painter... damn i wish i could paint like you:cries:

Regards Oldbury

21-02-2006, 16:49
The high contrast really makes your models shine.

21-02-2006, 16:53
they are some nice minis. i love the highlighting and the contrast with the shading works amazingly.

well done on the eyes, they really suit the model

21-02-2006, 17:16
Fantastic use of light and shade. Those are some great looking minis! I'm rarely moved to post in thread just to say "well done", but these deserved it!

I don't feel quite as strongly as AA though.

21-02-2006, 17:23
Love em, maybe the best yellow I have ever seen.

21-02-2006, 17:28
really nice models well done... painting is supurb.. altho tbh the bases suck big time.. put as much effort into the bases as u do the models and they will twice as good!

Out of interest why is this in project logs, i understand your doing a longer project 1000pts list, but then surely the thread should be "1000pts Imperial fists"? Please dont tell me you are gonna start a new thread for every squad you do?

21-02-2006, 17:47
actually, I don't like IF, but after seeing THESE...awesome, really well done.

Anvils Hammer
21-02-2006, 18:09
very very nicly painted, but the bases dont help the models.
The colour of the base is too close to the colour of the marines, a contrast, like grass or ash wastes, would put the emphesis back on the mini.

the sudden white highlights could only work with really good blending, which youve acheived, nice one!

21-02-2006, 18:17
These guys are lovely! Is that white as the final highlight? The effect works so well I want to try it out on some of my models. They yellow looks great. Best yellow ever! I'm not bothered about bases contrasting but then unlike others I never look at the bases unless they are rather 'different', just the models.

21-02-2006, 18:24
Very nice wok, my only critique would be the white highlight is a tad too bold for my eye. I tend to use bleached bone rather than white as a highlight and glaze between highlight layers to blend the highlights. Great flat yellow finish though.

Top work

Thanks so much for all your feedback guys!

On another note, Heero is right. I probably should have named this thread "Imperial Fists Army" or something similar, because this is where all my minis for this army are going to be... Don't know what I was thinking.:eyebrows:

Is there any way to re-name an entire thread?

Anvils Hammer
21-02-2006, 18:57
A moderator can rename the thread for you. PM sylass or one of the other moderators with your desired new title.

21-02-2006, 20:02
That is amazing...

I have never seen anyone pull off Fists like this, way *better* than the Eavy' Metal guys... rock

Crusader:D :D

edit: you've inspired me to figure out how to put a pic of one of my models as my avatar...

21-02-2006, 22:08
Excellent, can't fault them at all!

Inquisitor lorr
21-02-2006, 22:11
Wow,they're great that style of painting really seems to suit marines.Only problem are the bases ,they need to be darker and you need to repaint the rim the colours a bit wishy washy.Besides taht could we have a guide?:D

21-02-2006, 22:16
Absolutly phenomenal! Its the best yellow ive ever seen, and ive seen some GD winners do yellow, but never with that sort of depth. How many layers is that? If you could post a layer-by-layer tutorial, that would be great. My only comment I would give is the bases don't look finished, and I might suggest a more dramatic base scheme...Im a fan of Jungle for Imp Fists, but thats just me.

21-02-2006, 22:16
Which yellows did you use to get that nice warm shade? I've been pondering a Lamenters army and wanted to get a yellow similar to yours. Also, what is your basecoat?

21-02-2006, 22:24
The bases arent actually painted, are they? It just looks like sand plus plastic chunks.

I <3 these models. Nice, again.

(I commented twice, thats how cool they are)

Brother Octavian
21-02-2006, 23:28
I really rushed through completing the bases of these models, but I was so eager to get them photographed and posted that I didn't put as much time into them as I should have. I think I'm going to go back and change the bases to a darker stone and gravel theme, it should make them contrast better.

As for how I painted these guys yellow, I started by spray-priming them white, then I did a couple of watery coats of Snakebite Leather(enough to make sure the white didn't show through too much). Then I layered the main surfaces and raised areas of the armor with a coat of Vomit Brown, leaving the recesses and cracks of the armor untouched so the Snakebite Leather could start to darken them. Following this, I painted many thin coats of Golden Yellow over the Vomit Brown surfaces until I got a rich and consistent color. Next, I used Flesh Wash in between most of the armor plating to really make these darker areas contrast with the yellow. For highlighting, I just used Skull White on the raised parts, and blended each highlight into the yellow by simply painting a small and very watery touch of Sunburst Yellow over either edge of each white highlight.

WHEW! I know it sounds like a lot of work just for one model, and frankly, it is... But I like the way they turned out. I hope that helps! :)

22-02-2006, 01:10
They look awesome...The only thing I could see even remotely wrong (note this is not bad at all, just a nitpick. )I'm not even as close to as good of a painter as you.) The eyes seem a little flat. Maybe blackline around them or something?

New Cult King
22-02-2006, 01:33
Good grief, those guys are awesome! Nice and yellow, but still 'dark and brooding' somehow.

The highlighting is awesome too. This is how Imperial Fists should look!

22-02-2006, 02:43
Wow, thats all, just wow!!

22-02-2006, 14:06
and i though yellow was a girly colour! excellent.

I love your painting style. Have you got any other models painted we can look at?

Anvils Hammer
22-02-2006, 14:39
I really like this yellow,

I think im going to test giving my Temuchin 23rd yellow armour and cloeach bone cloaks, a bit of a diversion from the original ideas I had, but it should look striking if I can pull it off like you have, I'll do some experimenting.

Inquisitor Claissen
22-02-2006, 16:29
Wow!! man this is a very great yellow paint job!

Hey guys, I have here some pics of my WIP Commander in terminator armor, who is also equipped with a storm shield(the big one from the termi assault sprue), as well as a right-handed power fist that I converted from the standard plastic terminator bits.

Making this power fist was a frustrating chore, because I had to cut the individual fingers off one of the normal left-handed fists, and then rearrange them to resemble how fingers would appear on a right hand. I'm sure there was an easier way to do this, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. For his loincloth and cape, I cut out their shapes from a sheet of thin metal. This metal is soft enough to cut up and bend, yet sturdy enough to provide a durable "backbone" for the Green Stuff that I am going to sculpt over the top. Also on this model are various Forgeworld bits(the right shoulder pad and the small fist emblem on the chest plate.

Below is a WIP converted Terminator I am working on that belongs to the above model's Command Squad, though I did the modifications you see here before I began any work on the other models in this squad(A first test subject, so to speak). The Green Stuff I sculpted on the cloth and near the shoulder guard was done using the same method that I described for the Commander, and should give an idea of what the other squad members will look like when I finish them.

Tell me what you think!

Brother Octavian
23-02-2006, 02:01
...And here are a couple of views from the back, showing the "soon-to-be-Green-Stuffed" capes!

First is the Commander...

...And his Terminator buddy.

23-02-2006, 03:54
Well done well done.

Those are exactly painted and the termies look like they will be just as good.

23-02-2006, 09:43
Those terminators will really stand out if you give them all cloaks, it'll make them really unique.

The boyz
23-02-2006, 19:29
Wow Brother Octavian, those Tactical Marines on the first page are bloody superb, great paint job. The yellow is extremeley well painted. They look brilliant
Your Termies are looking pretty good so far, looking forward to seeing more updates. Good luck.

23-02-2006, 20:50
a yellow that dosnt make you want to tear your eyes out? is it possible?

Suicide Messiah
23-02-2006, 21:19
Wow, those look awesome. The yellow really stands out and with the gravel type base these will pop. I especially love the termies, the robes/cloaks look great. Out of interest where did you get the 'sheet of thin metal' from?

Brother Octavian
24-02-2006, 02:36
I bought the sheet of metal from a local hobby store, one which didn't sell any GW products. It was more of a supplier for 'trains and planes' model enthusiasts, so you might want to look for this stuff at a similar place. I think the metal is actually a thin sheet of pewter, sorry I was so vague with the material's description before, I just forgot what type of metal it was:confused:

somebody slap me and say they are real

great mate i wish i could paint like that and your stile is crisp and fine

04-03-2006, 23:11
The yellow on these guys is really good, Brother Octavian, you should be proud of them! Have you painted up any vehicles yet? I'd love to see your yellow on a vehicle. Keep up the good work, and good luck with the project.

04-03-2006, 23:29
awsome, the whole cartoonish appearence really works for the IF

Brother Octavian
07-03-2006, 22:09
Thanks again for all your great responses, guys!

First, I have a pic of the latest tactical marine I painted, complete with the new stone and gravel-themed base that I talked about earlier. I also went back and changed the bases of the marines that are pictured on the first page to the same theme.

07-03-2006, 22:17
very comic-book look, love everyting i'm seeing :)

keep it up!

Imperial Fist Commander
07-03-2006, 22:48
Awesome. Your Imperial Fists look just great. And trust me, I know from experience how hard it is to paint yellow. ;)

08-03-2006, 01:13
I like the new bases alot better. They contrast the yellow properly and match the upcoming cityfight campaign to boot. Just really well done, can't say it enough.

08-03-2006, 11:34
Looking amazing, the bases suit the models extremely well.

08-03-2006, 12:51
They are looking really superb! Yeah i agree the new bases suit the colour better, compliment it more I think. I love the way the yellow is nice and bright but the whole models seem really dark and brooding, in the good way of course!

08-03-2006, 14:18
Incredible work my friend :D

On the bases - the new sceme is a vast improvement, and does the minis themselves far more justice. Also IIRC weren't the IF specialists at siege and urban war?

green hell
13-03-2006, 20:11
The Fists WERE siege specialists, until GW decided to nerf the IF's with the new codex, making them kind of boring IMHO. I loved the old 3rd edition rules, they were great and really characterful without being over the top. If it were me, I would play them with the Iron Warriors rules, and just not use the Obliterators or something. Crying shame....

14-03-2006, 07:49
Those marines are just... damn. Now when I look at my Imperial Fists I just want to sweep my arm across the table knocking them all into the bin so I can start over. :cries: :p

15-03-2006, 11:42
Nice improvement, but the bases still seem impoverished to my eyes. I think maybe some scattered debris, or perhaps some dry (ie brown) coloured grass would set it off nicely...

15-03-2006, 11:47
Oh My ********** God!

15-03-2006, 17:49
Wow! I am super impressed.

Brother Octavian I'm mighty impressed, I too collect Imperial Fist.. I really like the blacklining contrast!

I salute thee.

Brother Octavian
01-04-2006, 00:39
Hey all! It's been a while since I've updated this log with new pictures of my minis, I've just been caught up with work and other projects. Anyway, I have here some pics of my new Terminator Commander!

You'll see that he is actually a re-designed version of the helmeted command squad Termi seen on a previous page. I just did some head swapping and added a few bits/green stuff to make him look all regal and "HQ"-like. I liked his pose better anyway, and I think I'll stick with this Commander as he is now. This model is still WIP, but I just have to sculpt the folds on his cape and he will be pretty much done.

I'd like to know what you all think, so post away!

01-04-2006, 00:41
Lovely work once again....

01-04-2006, 10:29
nothing i can say really other than i can't wait to see it painted

03-04-2006, 07:26
Very striking, I love the look of well panted Imerial Fists.

03-04-2006, 11:16
They are great! Keep up that superb work!!!

Inquisitor Konig
03-04-2006, 11:26
im drooling and i want more! even your bases look great. i have a friend who was playing imperial fists for a long time until he finaly gave up because he just couldnt paint the yellow armor. you put him, and everyone else ive ever seen to shame.

Inquisitor Claissen
03-04-2006, 15:15
Im not enough brave to paint yellow...Im afraid to this colour...

Brother Octavian
14-04-2006, 04:27
UPDATE!! I've got some new(and better) pics of my Commander model that I've been adding small details to lately.

Brother Octavian
14-04-2006, 04:32
...And here are some some detail images of the new modifications!

I know it looks kind of messy right now, but all the greenstuff additions will be cleaned up soon.

14-04-2006, 11:32
Very nicely done. The greeenstuffing looks good to me.

Also, well done for being original and not using the Lysander model... :p (lovely as it is).

Inquisitor Konig
14-04-2006, 21:39
have you thought about giving him a really big ring on his power fist finger? thats just what i thought when i saw those additional studs...:D

15-04-2006, 06:59
I am liking the paint job on these very much. I am about to start a new marine army and think i will give your technique a try because it looks so striking :D

21-04-2006, 03:51
Love the paint job and the terminator conversions are GREAT

Tech-Priest Foley
21-04-2006, 05:52
Great job with the GS, your a real natural. I've been trying to model some cloaks like that for my IG command squad. Great painting to, did you use a wash after all the highlighting

21-04-2006, 06:18
Nice GS work. Make sure to post more pics as he's painted up.

21-04-2006, 13:23
Classy, I'd love to see it painted(because I like your painting style a lot)^^ Very nice conversion, but...

A scope on a strom-bolter?

21-04-2006, 17:55
would work for master crafted. anyways you see scopes on both shorter and longer ranged weapons.

5upr3m3 h4xx0rz
22-04-2006, 18:56
Great paint-job, I love the yellow! Could you write up a how-to article with one of those termies as the WIP model to show how its done, then post it in the general P&T area?

Brush your teeth
22-04-2006, 22:47
those marines are sweet, the bases also do make them look alot better than with the sand. keep up the good work

23-04-2006, 14:18
actually, they are exact copies of my own 'Fists, even down to the rubble-strewn bases... (though obviously much better painted!)

23-04-2006, 18:34
*********** excellent yellow. as an IF man myself who sold his last army, with my New one i will be stealing your style!

23-04-2006, 20:46
dude there soooo cool, but get us more pic's. quick before we all die! ...

Brother Octavian
07-10-2006, 04:17
Ye Gods!! FINALLY an update...
I took a break from painting/modeling this army since my last post to work on another extracarricular project, but I have enough time now to continue assembling my Imperial Fists!

I have here some better pics of a Tactical Marine that I showed in my first post. I added some details that I think really improve the overall appearance of the model such as the 5th Company icon on the knee(all non-veterans in power armor will have this symbol in the same spot), as well as some small writing on his shoulder guard. Also I made the chest eagle appear more metallic by re-painting it with bronze followed by a dark-reddish wash.

Here is a close-up:

More to come!

Brother Octavian
07-10-2006, 04:24
Now here is a bit of conversion work I did on the sergeant of my Terminator Command Squad. The metal loincloth is going to be covered with sculpted folds of Green Stuff, Also the tall shoulder guard piece will be touched up quite a bit.

I have a bunch of other new work, and I will post pics as soon as I can get them uploaded. Comments welcome!

Still learning
07-10-2006, 04:26
wow, really looking good. great work.

07-10-2006, 04:47
Hi there, just a quick question. :)

I've been looking this thread over (very, very nice by the way) and I've been wondering what metal you've been using for the capes and tabards that you GS over. (Also, if you know where I should look for it, bonus.) I'm really interested in learning to do capes properly, and despite my yearning to learn a decent method, I haven't found anything as intuitive as yours.

(I can paint somewhat, but GS is brand new to me - been out of this hobby for years.)

07-10-2006, 09:50
sweet! really love the darkness of the yellow, i think youve really hit the naill on the head and made some really nice fists there!

07-10-2006, 14:13
Good to see this goin agen!

07-10-2006, 14:16
Incredible painting as before, glad to see you haven't abandoned the project. The termi looks very good so far

07-10-2006, 15:37
incredible paintjob i cant wait to see the finished version of your captain in termi armor.

07-10-2006, 15:45
Wow. Fantastic.

Those are truly ace. Some of the best painting of normal marines I've ever seen. They must take you ages!

08-10-2006, 20:54
I......Just......they're...... they actually look.......Yellow.

08-10-2006, 21:48

Awesome! Heres my suby post...

Sons of Russ
14-10-2006, 01:08
WOW, simply amazing ' Fists.

I have been SLOWLY painting up my terminators with Chaos warrior heads using a layering method similiar to yours. I can only hope mine will bear some facsimile to yours....

Though I would second about that storm bolter scope. I wouldn't lose it though, just cut down the front part so that the scope doesn't have such a long length to makethe SB look comical underneath it. Think of it as a red-dot reflex sight....;)

Can't wait to see some vehicles.

17-10-2006, 20:55
WOW! firstly, i love that yellow - ive been trying to start a howling griffong sarmy for years though can never seem to get the yellow right :( ill try your method, see what i can come up with.

Secondly, i too would like to see a tutorial on how to sculpt capes that way - if the metal you use isnt widely available, is there an alternative that can be found? it would be much appreceiated.

and keep up the good work - looking forward to seeing those termies painted.

14-08-2008, 14:49
Hey, now that is sweeeeeeeet, come on, tell us you secret, I am wanting to start an Imperial Fists army but can't find any good help on painting, can you help me out please?

Brother_Chaplian Raimo
18-08-2008, 00:33
Sheer epic win. These are, in all honesty, some of the best Fists I've ever seen. Your method is uniformly striking, and almost reminiscent of how I paint Fists, if one ignores the fact that yours are in a whole 'nother league. Very nice.

Edit: Sweet ****, the thredomancy here totally slipped past me. Please, don't post in something so long dead.

18-08-2008, 19:54
you have done a great job in painting the yellow on your imperial fists
keep em coming

18-08-2008, 19:58
My god this is a blast from the past!

this is the log that made me start my fists!

19-08-2008, 09:21
They are the mutts nuts.

19-08-2008, 22:53
hmmm....new space marine army in works....fists could be the scheme, though i may go mad painting it as my lysander army looked so good, yet took aaagggeeesss.

damn you for showing the shiny things! ; )

19-08-2008, 22:59
This has to be the best Imperial Fists army I have ever seen! I really like the black trim, and the yellow is bright without being over the top.

Fantastic work!
