Whilst wandering around my local newsagent, my gaze was drawn to the latest issue of kids magazine 'Doctor Who Adventures' or rather the free gift attached to the front- a set of five bright orange miniature Daleks.

With a vague idea pinging into life in my head, i picked up a couple of issues and headed home. I decided to attempt painting them up to match the Daleks revealed in the latest series.

The mini's are cast in pretty cheap and brittle orange plastic, but surprisingly well detailed for a free gift in a kids magazine. My aim is to turn them from this:
http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/ad360/Spiderpope/Dalek%20Paradigm/th_IMAG0009.jpg (http://s951.photobucket.com/albums/ad360/Spiderpope/Dalek%20Paradigm/?action=view&current=IMAG0009.jpg)
into this:

Pictured in this fairly terrible photo is the first of my Dalek Drones, the red Dalek revealed in 'Victory of the Daleks'. I intend to paint up versions of the supreme (white), the scientist (orange),the strategist (blue) and the eternal (yellow) along with a few spare red drones.

No idea what i'll eventually use them for, i doubt i'll be able to get my hands on enough of them to represent an army but they should look nifty enough on my shelf.

*Nods* I like your thinking, they would look cool on a shelf at the least. Dr Who is fun anyway, get stuck in!

Next time you take some pictures, take them whit a white sheet of paper in the background and a lamp at the front, that will make the picture clearer :)

Looks good so far!

Is there a game system that you use for them? Or do you use 40K counts as Necrons or something?

I remember a role-playing game that had miniatures... I've no idea if it was any good or not.

Thanks for the advice, my skills as a photographer aren't amazing it took me a week to figure out the camera had a macro setting.

No real plans at all for using them in anything really, it's more collecting and painting a bunch for the sake of it really. There's not any army in 40k that fits the Daleks that i can think of.

Harlequin miniatures did some Doctor Who stuff decades ago that was pretty good, and there's the more recent godawful prepainted stuff. It's rather depressing that a free cheap plastic Dalek from a magazine actually has more sculpted detail than most of the prepainted stuff.

Anyway a quick update with a few new pictures

http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/ad360/Spiderpope/th_dalekgroupshot.jpg (http://s951.photobucket.com/albums/ad360/Spiderpope/?action=view&current=dalekgroupshot.jpg)

A group shot of the assembled Dalek forces. I've now bought virtually every copy of the magazine i could find in Grimsby, giving me 25 Daleks all together.

http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/ad360/Spiderpope/th_daleketernal.jpg (http://s951.photobucket.com/albums/ad360/Spiderpope/?action=view&current=daleketernal.jpg)

Pictured here are the Drone (red), the Eternal (yellow) and a wip Strategist (blue). The Eternal naturally was an absolute bugger to paint, even with the foundation paints i find painting yellow a nightmare.

http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/ad360/Spiderpope/th_exterminate.jpg (http://s951.photobucket.com/albums/ad360/Spiderpope/?action=view&current=exterminate.jpg)

And a side on view of the two finished Daleks, off to exterminate some hapless indivicuals.

Now i need to finish the Strategist and make a start on the Supreme Dalek. The orange Scientist will have to wait until GW Grimsby gets some more foundation orange in stock.

Are these the new-style Daleks revealed in Victory of the Daleks? I might have to check out the newsagents round me.

By the way, Google "Doctor Who Miniatures Game". It's unofficial, but very professional-looking, and covers everything from The Unearthly Child in 1963 to Amy's Choice in 2010.

Excellent stuff there! I picked up 45 of those Daleks when I saw the mag last week too, though as I have a tank-sized remote control dalek, using them as Necrons with a large Dalek 'Monolith' seems apt.

Mate, nice work on these so far! You should perhaps convert an Emperor Dalek too seeing as you have so many to play with!

*Ahem* Not like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KONf7k62k98)tho...

Excellent work on painting them up. I've got to say though I'm really not keen on the new Dalek design. They look like inflatables, you know like those old bop-bags that you'd punch.

I've got a load of the old harlequin Daleks and Davros. You have inspired me to paint them up.

Nice work! Those must have been really fiddly to paint.

Have you thought about picking a Doctor and Amy model to go with them? Would be great to add to the display.

Kev White sculpted both of them (http://www.crooked-dice.co.uk/images/greens.jpg) recently for Crooked Dice, Amy looks nice, but his doctor doesn't look much like Matt Smith.. Steve Buddle did a much better sculpt (http://www.heresyminiatures.com/images/hsf032_montage_1.jpg) for Heresy.

I'll be painting up both as a bday present for my girlfriend. :D

Not sure about that "Amy"; the face looks wrong. Might be the painting.

There's also Heresy's Nerdlord:
