Alright, so my friend had a theory how his army of 60 gobbos 10x6 was almost unstoppable. He even said it could eventually grind down a steam tank. So then I thought, what if I turned my 12 knights into a choochoo train 2x6 and supported an attack with my tank killing 11 gobbos and taking no casualties in return. Now he only has 5 ranks, while I have 6 "ranks" but 0 rank bonus (since need min 5 models), but I still have more "ranks" than the boglins, are they no longer stubborn?

In all honesty Night Goblins are one of those units where I wouldn't worry about stubborn.

Can this be edited so the grownups can read it?

I thought ranks only qualified as a rank when they were equal to the minimum rank size for that kind of figure. (In other words, they have to be 5 wide to count.)

are ranks and rank bonus (rank-1) the same thing? Is there a specification for what constitutes a rank because I only know what constitutes rank bonuses. Because I know if you deploy HE spearmen in 2x4 (2 wide) they can still attack with all 8 attacks because they can fight in addition 2 ranks, but they are not 5 wide which nulls the original statement that you need 5 wide to qualify as a rank. Since you CANNOT argue that because they are not 5 wide, they do not have 4 "ranks" and hence cannot all attack back which means that you do not need 5 wide to qualify as a 'rank' just rank bonus.

You can pretty much count on the fact that `ranks' will mean `ranks of at least 5 models' in this instance. If not, never mind the 2x6 knight formation, welcome to the 1x40 goblin one, with a Black Orc Warboss sitting at the front (maybe Nigel Stillman's single rank tactic was before its time after all :D?).

Fun mishap, I initially misread the topic title as "got hit by a chocobo train" and was expecting awesome chicken cavalry to be contained within.

OP: By army do you mean unit? As goblins are minimum size 20 units...

Such is the problem when you play a game without knowing the rules.

Infantry ranks in 5s, while monstrous infantry and cavalry rank in 3s now.

Your knights if fighting in 6 ranks of 2s would not have any ranks since you need to be at least 3 models wide to gain a bonus.

If you were 2 ranks of 6 wide then you would have 2 ranks though i would change that to 3 ranks of 4 for an added benefit.

You still need to have a rank bonus in order to count as having ranks for steadfast or to count towards denying steadfast.

So did I! And then there was disappointment.

Only Monstrous Infantry and Bretonnian knights get 3 wide ranks right now, so it will be easy for them to "break Ranks".
