View Full Version : WIP Dark Eldar

24-02-2006, 13:31
Just thought i would show you a few pics from the Dark Eldar army im working on. Comments and criticism welcome and there will be more to follow. I apologise in advance for standard of the photos.

24-02-2006, 14:30
well, there aren't really photos :eyebrows:

Rabid Bunny 666
24-02-2006, 14:32
no pics dude, just put the URL in your next post

28-03-2006, 17:22
some more photos now i have worked out how to attach them.

28-03-2006, 17:28
and the last for now that brings it up to date, most of these are WIP and still need bases finishing.

28-03-2006, 17:32
Last couple of ravager pics, yes i knoe photos are rubbish will try harder for next lot.

well, what you think?

28-03-2006, 19:16
Your army is awfully...black. Not a bad thing regarding your choice of army (Dark Eldar aren't really supposed to be pink, now are they?), but still it's harder to see black in close pictures without macro, compared to seeing other colours. What I can make out, however, is that your army looks rather nice, without the extreme highlighting otherwise common when other lads paint black armies.

28-03-2006, 19:29
Well done my fellow archon most impressive.....

mine are some what more purple than those...

Dead orc
28-03-2006, 22:37
It looks more like a very dark green than black to me. Better pictures would be nice but the army looks great so far. Very nice job.

28-03-2006, 23:49
Some of the best Dark elder I've ever seen, your black is really well done.

29-03-2006, 00:13
I agree with the above they are easily some of the best dark eldar I've seen, although some of the conversions im not too keen on - the standard stuff just looks funky enough to not need converting

29-03-2006, 09:26
the warriors are a dark green, the ravager is dark green and black. Conversions have been done to represent correct wargear for wysiwyg and to enlarge variations for the warriors. Ravager was converted from raider and two vypers as the GW version was the victim of lazy sculpting. i hope to have some mandrakes on here later and a test model for my converted scourges (another victim of lazy sculpting).

29-03-2006, 11:23
The painting looks superb - even if the photos are a bit blurry!

29-03-2006, 17:19
Here are some WIP shots of my first two scourges

29-03-2006, 17:29
Now for some mandrakes

29-03-2006, 17:54
excellent stuff, love the way you did scourges came out

Hideous Loon
29-03-2006, 20:29
And them Mandrakes look EVIL! Good work, Batman!

31-03-2006, 14:44
They look so good that it breaks my heart that the pics aren't a little crisper!

12-04-2006, 19:47
A few photos of a WIP raider for my warrior squad, if the photos come out clearer ill take new photos of the models i have posted already.

13-04-2006, 10:37
a quick update after an hours work this morning.

13-04-2006, 15:56
I'd have to agree with everyone else, definitly the best DE I've seen in a long time.

I have to ask, how did you do the skin on the mandrakes? Painting the shadow-skinned has been a quandry I've had for a while now.

13-04-2006, 19:36
the skin is done using scorched brown as a base and using if i remember right fortress grey in increasing amounts to highlight but with a glaze of brown/green ink between each stage. At the moment i only use gw paints and find using tamiyas acrylic thinner the best way to get them to a smooth useable consistency though im starting to experiment with vallejo and a couple of tamiyas clear colours.

14-04-2006, 15:23
Some good conversions, I really like the mix of CWE and DE parts in the army, gives it a great Pirate feel.

14-04-2006, 20:44
A couple of pics of the finished raider.

14-04-2006, 20:51
The first pic is of the finished raider squad

the second is a pic of what is finished so far, about five hundred points with more to come

and the next warrior squad im starting on

14-04-2006, 20:54
Some of the best DE I've ever seen, not over the top garish green, very well painted, good posing etc.

Kudos :).

15-04-2006, 11:00
My testors dullcote finally arrived this morning so i have quickly zapped all the finished models to take the nasty shine off them. After all dark eldar should have a matt finish. When they come for you in the night they dont want to give the game away by reflecting any ambient light off shiny armour to give the game away.

18-04-2006, 21:37
The first two completed warriors from my second squad, only eight more to go. Have been slightly slowed by the need to tidy up work area as people have been viewing the house, im hoping to pick up the pace again and maybe get this army finished before i go on holiday.

after i finish this 10 strong squad i have three more scourges to build, then paint all five and a raider mounted withch squad to paint which will take me to about 1000pts

18-04-2006, 22:10
Wow...your Dark Eldar are really cool and very easy to make I see! Too bad you're not painting them in this (http://wiki.anargo-sector.net/index.php?title=Image:Darkeldar10.JPG) colourscheme :(

01-05-2006, 18:37
Due to far too much time fraternising with the opposite sex in the pub and a general lack of motivation painting green ive started to lag behind with my dark eldar. So I have decided to paint the wych unit as these will be in a colour scheme to reflect there cult rather than the kabals colour scheme. Have just finished assembling and undercoating them, no conversions this time.

Hopefully ill get some WIP photos up late tonight or early tomorrow.

01-05-2006, 20:44
some WIP shots of the first wych that im using to work out the skin colours stage by stage.

first up is graveyard earth over black

then 50/50 graveyard earth/elf flesh

then elf flesh alone

then 50/50 elf flesh/skull white

managed to avoid a ruddy human complexion by using these colours keeping it pale with a slight grey hint to it. It appears darker than it is due to poor lighting, i really need to build myself a light box sometime.

01-05-2006, 21:54
Another quick update. Not sure im happy with the red armour, might change it to black.

Another quick pic

I think the shardnet looks okay all metallic but I have decided to change the impaler as it looks rubbish with all that silver in one place. Ill see what I can come up with and post the changes tomorrow.

Dead orc
01-05-2006, 23:43
That looks awesome! Your tempting me to start DE again! Is that witch a conversion or straight from the blister? Looks like a cool model either way.

02-05-2006, 06:51
its a stock model, i managed to find enough models i was happy to use without converting any.

02-05-2006, 10:06
this is the finished test model for the unit

comments and criticism please. I have already spotted a couple of loose paintbrush hairs I need to remove. The base will be finished to match the rest of the army.

02-05-2006, 10:39
As I said a while back, good looking stuff. I commented on your armor before now I'm praising your flesh tones. They look really nice.

As far has hitting the pub (bar on this side of the pond) I know where your coming from, except I don't get much time for that either...other than showing up to break up the fights.

02-05-2006, 12:38
What do you use to chip the ice off the top of your beer? :)

02-05-2006, 18:42
Right now my minis, scince I havn't got to play in about a year! But seriously folks...no its in the mid 50's right now and we barely got any snow this year. Besides we Americans really love our beer cold...and our women hot...or something like that. HA.

02-05-2006, 20:52
Us brits do it the other way around.

I love that red. If I wasn't getting Ultras I'd ask for a recipe. Maybe a recipe for the flesh would be cool though.

02-05-2006, 21:06
its just how i laid it out above.

1 Spray chaos black.
2 Paint all skin areas graveyard earth.
3 highlight 50/50 graveyard earth/elf flesh
4 highlight elf flesh
5 highlight 50/50 elf flesh/ skull white.

the key to success is thin smooth coats. an appreciation of anatomy and how light falls.

03-05-2006, 22:13
Time for the WIP shots of the next two wyches

03-05-2006, 22:16

seeing as there are seven in the unit im working in pairs know so as to work at a reasonable but not too expedient speed.

04-05-2006, 11:19
Just a quick update to show some progress. Silver is mithril silver washed with thinned black ink and then re-highlighted with mitril silver.

05-05-2006, 19:04
there won't be any updates for the next two weeks as i will be in sunny florida. feel free to leave any comments or questions and i will attend to any i don't see tonight when i get back.

08-05-2006, 10:43
How did you paint that green?

08-05-2006, 11:52
cool wytches, like the skin. to which city/town are you going? I just returned from Orlando yesterday. and if don't want to get sick DO NOT EAT SHRIMPS.

22-05-2006, 12:47
i have returned at last from my long reserved holiday.

dont worry knight of ultramar i just stick to the gator, i was in orlando as well.

as for the green

1)catachan green with a bit of black ink splurged all over the model
2)pick out the raised areas in catachan green
3)catachan green + rotting flesh for first highlight
4)colour used in 3 plus more rotting flesh for final highlight

all models are given a coat of purity seal for protection and then a spray with testors dullcote to finish.

keep an eye out for updates over the next couple of days.

22-05-2006, 14:02
Those are some really nice flesh tones on the Wyches, bravo!

Oh and consider that Scourge idea thoroughly stolen!

22-05-2006, 18:28
"Reserved" or deserved holiday? Hope you had fun. I'm envious becaue I've got a buddy who is in England right now for a couple of weeks vacation. I, alas, can't take any leave right now because of work....which is swamping me with paperwork.

Oh, and looking forward to some new updates now that you've returned home.

22-05-2006, 19:02
deserved :) my fingers are still on holiday but im hoping to get some painting done tonight if my fingers co-operate.

22-05-2006, 20:57
a quick update to show the red armour as i go through each stage this being the first.

the basecoat is vallejos gory red mixed with a little black ink to darken it painted across the armour plates. difficult to see in the picture as it comes out quite dark.

now im off to paint the next stage.

22-05-2006, 21:22
I have been watching this thread for quite a while and I am most impressed! I to am creating a kabal myself so be on the lookout for some pics :D

22-05-2006, 21:29
a bit blurry this pic but this is the first highlight just using vallejo's gory red.

22-05-2006, 21:57
The next highlight is just done with GW blood red

ill see how much more i can get done tonight before i fall asleep.

22-05-2006, 22:30
The next highlight is roughly 50:50 GW blood red:vallejo gold yellow

now i have to try and remember wether i used another highlight or just glazed it with red ink to get the finish like the test model.

22-05-2006, 23:02
i decided on one more highlight approx 80:20 vallejo gold yellow:GW blood red

then i glazed all the armour with red ink, the shine will be taken off when they get a coat of testors when they are finished.

thats the red done, ill probably do the black weapon casings, the purple hair and sashes next at the same time as there are lots of common colours used in these areas. i will leave the eyes till the end when i have added any little details i may have missed.

now its off to a warm bed with a hot blonde

23-05-2006, 21:35
well here are the first three finished wyches, four more to go and then there raider transport as well.

thats all for today ill have to see how much painting time i get tommorow.

23-05-2006, 21:41
Looks great, Although I'm still not sure about the sculpts, that has nothing to do with your skill. Why couldn't they do something like the WFB witch elves?

23-05-2006, 21:51
I think some are poorer than others and i just picked the ones i thought best, i like the way they have a gladiatorial feel to them. the only major problem i have with them is that some are quite a bit taller than others, i believe this was because the scupltors for the first and second gen models where different. the figures im really unhappy with i have changed completely (scourges and ravager) and added some more variation to the warriors. im hoping when i come to do a lord and incubi retinue my scuplting skills will have reached a point i can do something befitting there status.

23-05-2006, 22:01
Yeah, the size difference is what really bugged me about that picture. I think the DE are in serious need of an overhaul, but its people like you that contiue with the army and make it look cool anyway that will stop the concept going the way of the squats.

I salute you sir!

24-05-2006, 12:42
squats are alive and well. there is one working for DHL ive seen him (seriously) he used to pick up from the place i worked. maybe squats will have to be my next project. I know im going to regret saying that.

28-05-2006, 20:52
well i finally have pulled my finger out and started to work on the next three wyches, im leaving lelith which im using as my succubus till last.

hopefully ill get some more done tonight and ill post any progress, plus ill have some time tommorrow seeing as its a bank holiday after i cut the lawn (the grass is now two foot tall after not being cut for three weeks).

28-05-2006, 22:44
heres the wyches with all there skin finished and the black touched up ready for tommorow. hopefully will get a chance to finish them tommorow. That would give me a week to do the succubus and start converting there raider before i have to go down south for a week to work on the new house.

20-06-2006, 01:08
You've gotten me motivated to dust off my DE and have some fun with them again. Got in four games with them this weekend, had a great time.

22-06-2006, 02:07
Great paintjob. I still have to repaint my army, though :)

24-06-2006, 13:01
Dude, you rock!

24-06-2006, 15:29
Swish! I'm not the biggest fan of the Warriors, but you've done a really nice job on them!

02-07-2006, 21:02
There should be a fairly big update by the end of this week as things are no longer insane.

09-07-2006, 00:19
sorry no big update the heat has being playing merry hell with my paints as i use isopropyl alcohol as a thinner my paints were evaporating in about two seconds so all i have managed is the metal on my wyches and begun converting there raider. i will post pics as soon as this thing lets me upload them.

09-07-2006, 02:20
ah... you use Tamiya paints too? I see that your army seems inspired by the illustration from the 4th ed book, right?

Anyhoo, nice to see someone do dark eldar in more subtle tones.

Quin 242
09-07-2006, 02:58
Here are some WIP shots of my first two scourges

Now THESE are some models I can get behind! BRILLIANT combo of bitz

Consider them ripped :)

now get off the crud modelled wyches and lets see more warriors/ scourges :)

09-07-2006, 11:41
i actually use a mix of gw and vallejo paint i just find the isopropyl thinners give me a smoother finish than thinning with water.

dont worry i only have this one squad of wyches to do then im going to finish the warriors and scourges before i start the incubi which will be converted ooooh!!!!

10-07-2006, 18:45
seeing as the upload feature is playing up i posted the lastest pic of my work on cool mini and hopefully the link below will take you to it.

I now have the six wyches painted i just need to do the succubus (lelith hesperax model) and there raider to finish this unit.

10-07-2006, 19:45
not bad, I think the warriros look a bit chalky from drybrusing but otherwise really good.

10-07-2006, 20:44
there was no drybrushing used on them its all wet brush highlights.

11-07-2006, 14:15
my mistake; but this one

looked drybrushed, it could be the blurry photo. I appologize for the mistake.

11-07-2006, 18:24
don't worry about it im just aiming at being informative rather than having a hissy fit. Blurry photographs do suck, most of the photos in the early thread are quite bad quality but has improved along the way so when i finish im going to close this thread and just post a whole new set of army pics.

If i ever get it finished.

11-07-2006, 19:35
These are my favorite DE models ever. Makes the army look like a very attractive option.

11-07-2006, 19:42
now they are... theyre just.. omg theyre *********** brilliant! you take the worst range since god knows what and make masterpeices of them!

11-07-2006, 21:44
your making me blush lol. this hopefully will be the standard for all my future armies, im really trying to pull out the stops now to find time to get these finished before the end of the month as i have an evil empire (GW) recruiting day then.

13-07-2006, 08:54
hooray things are uploading again just intime for me to go away for the weekend doh!

25-07-2006, 22:08
Couple of quick WIP pics of the succubus for the wych squad. Yes the pics are crap. Shinyness is due to ink glaze which will disappear when i zap it with testors.

26-07-2006, 00:00
I really like these, they have a nice dark, gritty and brooding look to them which fits perfectly with my ideas of the 40k universe. I also like that fact that you've not been tempted to make them ridiculously bright like so many eldar and DE players do, the subtle tones give a much more realistic look.

Good job!

25-01-2007, 20:10
Beware threadomancy most foul

well i have some new stuff to add so i thought i would perform some CPR on this thread, now i have moved properly i shall be able to update this regularly again.

First of all a finished warrior squad

then a finished packmaster

then a WIP on a scourge, just deciding how to do the flesh bits at the mo but i reckon this is looking like the winner

thats all for tonight but more coming very soooonnnnnn!!!!!!!

25-01-2007, 20:42
WOoo0w That's some serious threadomancy :D

Very cool minatures! I like the way you picture dark elves, more red then purple.. less pussy .. more musculant also..

Not too sure about the use of eldar between the dark eldar.
Cant wait to see the reaper!

25-01-2007, 22:59
Glad you brought this back...
I forgot to bookmark it and lost your scourges. got distracted on another army and couldn't find them.

Arch-Traitor Horus
12-04-2007, 13:26
These DE are sexy, i like the way you have used the CWE torsos to beef them up Might use this my self *Runs to local GW to GEt last of 16men Gaurdian boxes*:D

Quin 242
12-04-2007, 14:25
Get thee to completing the scourges!!!

12-04-2007, 14:29
awww dude now i want a DE army :D

The Song of Spears
12-04-2007, 23:37
Hey there. I really like your DE, fantastic paint, subtle yet clean. I bet they are a real treat to see in RL.

Colorado and Alaska swapped places this year, as it's still snowing here :cries:

15-04-2007, 13:53
Those are really nice DE. Do you have an army list for these, or are you just painting what you like? If you have a list, could you post it, please?

15-04-2007, 16:06
Thats some fine painting you've done there, although I'm not keen on using guardian heads on warriors.

Dat Wildboy
16-04-2007, 12:18
wow, beautiful. my DE log should be updated soon. i've got some dark lances and a jetbike to play with.

beautiful though. darker red than mine.
