well on completion of my mentor legion log a few people asked if i could start posting more pics of other stuff. my intention is to add all the stuff i paint to this thread. within the next week i will hopefully add an eight man squad of imperial guard vets, an ogre rhinox rider and a high elf hero. both the fantasy mini's are a massive change for me but i feel i need to expand my painting style and habits having painted over 150 marines and vehicles plus about 80 or so tyranids over the last year.
so anyway without further ado here's the first of the guardsmen-
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/100_0886.jpg

this will be part of hopefully a much larger army which i am basing on an inquisitors personal army/body guard.

hope you all like him

james:)

spikyjames

Very nice-how do you paint your red?

the red is a base coat of scab red over a chaos black undercoat, this is followed by building up layers of blood red and then a very small highlight of blazing orange.

yep FW Hard vets

astonishing so far looking forward to seeing more.

hope this doesn't dissapoint anybody but i decided it was time to paint something a bit different so i've started my rhinox rider

sorry pics removed, see completed pic further on:)

what do you think so far.

james

Hideous Loon
27-02-2006, 11:17
I think the Rhinox is awfully monochrome, it could do with some patterns, even though you've painted the tusks/teeth/hooves. I recommend a lighter colour on the Ogre than on the Rhinox.

KayvaanShrike
27-02-2006, 13:22
James those gaurdsmen are amazing! I especially like the shadowing you have done on he face of the 2nd one there, very realistic.

The rhinox looks good, I feel sure it will look even better once it is finished.
Keep up the good work.

Stunning stuff there...

on the Guardsman, i love the faces...simply great. Makes me feel quite inadequate...

Guardsman 2 - yes the symbol does need tidying. My eye is drawn to it purely because it's not as clean and neat and, well, good as the rest of the model...

Rhinox

Love it. I dont think, now it's completed, that it's too monochrome. You have achievd a great depth of colour on both the Rhinox and the rider.

Very impressive - thanks for sharing :)

bit of a resurection of this thread as i've now finished my last project and have a few bits of stuff to do for one of my other clients. first up are a squad of Black templar terminators, all this stuff is of a decent table top standard.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/Commission/100_1090.jpg

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/Commission/100_1091.jpg

for this client i still have a Chaplain with jump pack, some tyranids including a tyrant, a lictor, an old biovore and some smaller creatures i also have a squad of marines plus a rhino for them to do.

so you all know what to expect over the next few weeks, let me know what you all think.

Wow.
I hate that bleeding Chaplain model, yet I find myself wanting that mini now. (Only the one you've painted, mind you.) Very nicely done, aespecially given that's your 'tabletop standard. Doubt I would call it that, but then I can see what you're capable of with those Guardsmen and it all makes sense.

Your tabletop is to my 'reasonably good' as your guardsmen are to those marines. Guess I've got a lot more practicing still to do...

Can i ask how you do your bases?

spikyjames
13-08-2006, 14:53
I do these type of bases by brushing bestial brown over a black undercoat and then drybrushing bleached bone over that, for the grass i just put a dollop of goblin green on then dip it in the grass pot and blow away the excess. then bestial brown round the edge.

Resurection!!!

just thought i bring this old log back up as over the next few month's i'm going to be painting a few different things, so rather than making a new thread every time i do something new i'll just chuck them in here.

first up is 3 more mentors terminators.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/mentor%20leigon/100_1400.jpg

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/mentor%20leigon/100_1399.jpg

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/mentor%20leigon/100_1398.jpg

if you could let me know what one you think is best that'd be good?

next is a mini i'm doing for a charity auction organised by another forum, he's obviousley still wip but rest assured i'll post finished pics, also if anybodies interested in the auction let me know and i'll post a link.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1401.jpg

ok so that's it for now, here's a list of a few things that'll be coming up in the not too distant future.

DoK heavy bolter team
linited edition autarch
1 BT terminator
a few more tyranid bits
ogre kingdoms bits
and once i've got through a few of these there may be a new mentors thread just to get in a few more units that i want to give me more options.

once i've got through most of this i'll then start a new army of some sort.

as always questions and feedback is always welcome.

james

schoolcormorant
30-11-2006, 22:57
ok spiky,
you asked but i don't what you to think it's because of your painting.

OMG!I always want to have this model.I think it's a rare SM commandr from 98 ?

The termis are nice as usually, but i think you include to much terminator in your army.

spikyjames
01-12-2006, 12:29
yeah he's the 1999 limited edition games day mini.

there's 15 terminators including the chaplain and the commander, and the armies 4000 points, so not really that many, there is a few bits that you've not seen yet:)

the nid objective markers are from another gaming company (not sure which one) and are made of resin.

how do you paint white and get it so sharp? i'm thinking about the cloak his back?
every time i try i get something very grey or very unshaded and it's getting to me!
SC

spikyjames
02-12-2006, 13:43
the white on the cloak was done by first painting the whole area with codex grey, then a layer of space wolves grey was applied over the top then i built up layers of skull white. i'll put up a better picture later on today.

ok, time for a small update. unfortunatley due to my camera battery dying whilst i was taking these pics there not the best.

never mind though i'll still let you see what i've done.

first up i've done another terminator for the BT sword brethen unit

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/Commission/100_1405.jpg

and next up is another guardsman to go with the other 2
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/100_1406.jpg
i will re-take the pics once i get a new battery

currently i've got an ogre bull and a maneater on my paint station, just trying to do something different for a change. over the next week or 2 i will be doing some more tyranids including some interesting different mini's.

james:)

schoolcormorant
09-12-2006, 15:43

the guardsman is great, the Elysian meltagun works nicely.

This painting is nice as hell!

You can make a similar model to that 1999 SM commander from the commander box. Only $26 AUD easy way to put some vets together with that.
Can u post the colours u used and how u did it for the blue and gold on the commander it is sweet.

spikyjames
10-12-2006, 11:10
ok mate no probs , i'll post them here as alot of people ask me about them.
it's very long winded but here goes-

i start all my ultramarines with a black undercoat and only paint one colour at a time until it's finished, that way i can neaten up each colour before starting the next one.
i go through the colours as i do them on the models, also a point to note is that i water my paints down alot before i use them sometimes as much as 50/50.

1st- i start with the blue-

1- base coat of midnight blue allover
2- regal blue on all the armour plates leaving midnight in all the recess's
3- 1st highlight of 50/50 regalblue/ultramarine bluefairly fat around the edges of the armour
4- 2nd highlight ultramarine blue around all the edges of the armour(edging only)
5- 3rd and final highlight space wolf grey only on the extreme edges of the armour plates

the blue wont look as dark as mine as you are going through the process until you have the final highlight on. after i've finished this stage i then black out all the areas that are not supposed to be blue.

i then move on to the metallics

1st- gold
1- all areas are painted bestial brown
2- then brazen brass leaving brown in the recess's
3- then a shining gold highlight
4- next a brown ink wash, very watered down
5- again a shining gold highlight
6- next a burnished gold highlight
7- then burnished gold +mithril silver on the edges
2nd- silver
1- all metal ares are painted with boltgun metal
2- a black ink wash 50/50 with water and a little bit of washing up liquid(this helps the spread of the ink, you dont get pools)
3- then highlight with bolt gun metal followed with mithril silver on the edges.

again i then neaten up any other areas that need it.

next- black
1-highlight with 50/50 black/codex grey
2- highlight with codex grey

next-red
1- paint all areas with scab red
2- next blood red leaving scab red in all the recess's
3- a careful highlight of firey orange

next- purity seals/tabbards etc.
1- paint all areas with snakebite leather
2- next bleached bone leaving snakebite leather in recess's as required, this may need a few layers, keep it watered down.
3- skull white on all the upper edges, again may take a few watered down coats

for the skin(which is usually the 2nd colour i do after the armour)
1- base coat of dark flesh
2- 50/50 mix dark flesh/dwarf flesh leaving dark flesh in the recess's
3- dwarf flesh again on the raised areas
4- 50/50 dwarf flesh/elf flesh on upper raised areas
5- elf flesh on upper areas
6- 50/50 elf flesh/skull white on extreme raised areas
the skin really needs to worked up through these colours, i use the smallest brush i can and ensure you keep the depth.

hope this is ok.

james:)

TBH i didn't really like the bolter, the pistol also give's him a little more oomph in game terms.

@KOU, the guardsmen will be getting done soon as they don't really take that long to paint and i enjoyed doing them.

11-12-2006, 10:46
The flesh looks great. It's very smoothly painted and keeps the "organic" look.

I'm not too sure about the snow on the bases though; I think maybe they look a bit too busy with both snow and static grass over the earthy base. Perhaps if there was noticeably more of one of the elements (i.e., mostly snow, mostly grass or mostly earth) it might look better.

I'm looking forward to the Maneater though. (which "flavour" is it going to be?)

the head's from a lead belcher, so it's probably meant to be shrapnel, (a point i never noticed when i made these up about 2 years ago).
i just thought i'd paint them up to look like bone, as if he'd just jammed them into his face to prove how hard he really is:eyebrows:

i think he looks ok though.

ok then, finally got a new battery for my camera, re-chargeable one this time:D so it's update time.

first up we have an ogre maneater, i think he came out ok, it's the first metal ogre i've done, i found it fairly awkward to paint due to it's weight and had to remove the hammer after i'd done the flesh just so i could get to some of the stuff on his chest.

I like the maneater alot! I think you did a better job than GW, with all their colourful this and thats.. It looks really.. dull and like an ogre! Not too many colours, just what he looted or belongs with. Great job!

Well the zoanthropes, you made of them what you could .. the models arent the best.. but the paintjob justifies alot of the "bad" sculpt.
Good painting on a bad model.
Keep it up!

those are all awesome, the marines are still exeptionally well painted even for minimal highlights. the Mentor command looks interesting, i really like it and can't wait to see it painted.
did the rhino armour and icons take a lot of extra work to fit because they look alomost plastic in their fitting? aside of course from the front bit where it meets the wheel arches.

SC

spikyjames
21-12-2006, 18:46
i think the marine squad took me about a day to do completely(lots of stopping and starting)
the bolt pistols are simply normal pistols with a bolter magazine and marine sight reversed and the large end removed, kinda like a laser sight type thing. they also have the original foresight removed-

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1422.jpg

the extra armour took a little bit of playing around with, but wasn't the worst i've had. needed a bit more filling than normal though.

next for the mentors will be a couple of devastator squads, i've started work on the missile launcher squad, going for a bit of a chunkier look on the legs, here's a quick pic so far. (sorry for the poor quality)

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1423.jpg

most of the marines i'm currently building are for the mentors, i think i may have said elsewhere i've got about another 1500ish points planned for them.
the list includes- Assault terminator squad with LR crusader
2x dev squads, 1 with missile launchers, 1 with heavy bolters
1 terminator squad with cyclones
a power armoured command squad and commander
2x razorback's and 1 more rhino
and lastly a techmarine( the mail order one)

i have all this stuff already i'm just waiting to buy a few FW bits to go with it.

i am going to be doing more ogre's first though, about 2000 points hopefully.

The BP conversion is stunning as simple! As your painting speed!I think I asked once but how do you paint your white ? Because in feb i restart my marine project and I need to do good white on big surfaces.

About the land raider why not a crusader ? In your list right above you mentioned a an LRC with assault termies.Maybe you want to field a power weapon boosted veteran squad in it ? :)

Nice photos - especially the lighting. What lighting do you use?

for my photo's i dont use any extra lighting, i take them in my kitchen which has a strip light and a normal ceiling light, i just ramp up the exposure compensation to +2.

@Tussky- for white's, if your doing a large area it's always better to use a white undercoat, it's easier to undercoat black over white using a brush than the other way round, for painting white over black i always base with either shadow or codex grey and then use as many very thin layers of white as it needs, it's avery lengthy process.

the land raider is one i had painted previously, just thought i'd show an example of how the crusader will look colour wise.

the rhino took about 3 hours all in, including white from a black base :)

unfortunatley all the stuff i have painted for the Mentors is on a secret assignment at the minute! so you'll need to wait a bit to see the whole lot together.

anyway here's the latest thing i've painted, fely like doing spmething on the spur of the moment so i thought i'd do a jumppack chaplain i had lying around. i decided to do him for my other marine army "The Sons of Proteus" i've included a pic of 2 marines from the army so you all know how their painted, very similar to the angels sanguine scheme with a few subtle difference's.

Dave

spikyjames
01-01-2007, 11:17
the skin for the ogre's straight from the book-

50.50 shadow grey/graveyard earth base coat

komando khaki was then layered over this. very watered down, takes a long time.

bleached bone highlight at the end.

the skin was the longest part of the mini to do, it took about 2 hours in total.

a small update now, the other 2 command squad members have been made now. all they need are the bases done and then they can be sprayed and painted. the helmets and arms a seperate(being held on by bluetac for pics) so it will make them easier to paint.

The command squad looks good!Where from the did you get such an amount of winged skulls ? I think you should include an other marine with melta gun.Don't you think you should attach a techmarine to your HQ squad (ok I know it means one less termi squad),but a signum grants you a re-roll which is nice with melta weapons.Just give him a bp insted of the bolter.:cheese:

i am diversifiying(SP):) i just wanted to get the armies to my playing style before expanding, the SoP's won't get any bigger than another small tactical squad and the mentors will hopefully eventually have most options in the army list availiable. i'm currently trying to get them to a more mech infantry type of force.

yep, i built the armour from plasticard so as to represent extra armour. as for it's effectiveness the this you need to remember is that with this weapon combo it has a duel role both anti-tank and anti-infantry. it can also move 6" and fire all the weapons.

One thing I keep meaning to ask is are those shoulder pads the normal ones with the trim removed or are the the knobbly ones with the knobbles removed?

they're terminator pads with the bottom bit removed and the gap at the front filled, they're a tad on the big side for normal marine shoulders so i've cut the shoulders from some spare terminator arms, with a little trimming they work fine.

Paint job is just as good. That means it's perfect (you sure have a steady hand to paint such a perfect eagle head on the shoulder pad).

The pose is cool, running Marines always rock. The only thing I can point out is that perhaps it would've been better if the Meltagun was pointing in the same direction as the Marine's head. I think the head is angled slightly too high.

But that's not to say that this is a bad/unnatural pose or anything. And I must agree with Animerik here that you're a Golden Demon standard painter and that your miniatures are superior to 'Eavy Metal in every single way.
I just hope that one day, I'll paint with even a fraction of your skill. That would be a big improvement for me.

Really nice work on these vets James! :) Now I really want to know how you paint that awesome white.. :D

Looking forward to see the next one.. :)

the white's done by first giving the mini 2 light spray's of skull white i then paint the parts that ain't going to be white with chaos black and do the rest of the colours. once this is complete i then line all the recces's with shadow grey and neaten it up with space wolf grey (i used to use fortress grey for neatening up but space wolf grey works better), once this is done i then paint as many layers of watered down skull white as it takes to bring it back to pure white.
