Hi all, I wanted to get some practise sculpting so decided on a subject from the awesome alternate timeline piece over on Bolter&Chainsword, the Dornian Heresy. So have gone with the very cool 'Damocles' MK16 Power Armour.

I won't bore you with the armature shots and the build up of clay etc. and I didn't take any wip shots anyway sorry.

Anyway, wire armature and fimo clay has got me to this point, let me have some feedback if you feel so compelled!

Looks really nice so far, gotta push myself to read that Dornian heresy plog but it's just soooooooo much text and not very many pics :p

Okay so first off have you decided any specific pose already or are you just building the basics and taking it from there ? And scale wise, he's awfully big compared to that IG, is he 54mm or is he just a sculpting project (No scale perhaps) ?

Looking forward to more on this project :D

The pose I was aining at is the banner bearer from the page 41-42. I say aiming at as for some reason, it ended up being opposite...dunno what happened there!

Scale wise, he stands at about 90mm tall, so I don't really know what scale that would equate to, but not really worried about that.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks for the kind words all!

Little bit of progress, just fleshed out the vambraces and upper arms, fixed a few little wrong bits and added the collar using some brass tube and putty. Still needs a few bits fixing up at this stage too, such as the top of the left shin plate.

That's all for now guys, aiming to get the vambraces and hands fleshed out this evening. It may involve me making at least a stand-in for his plasma pistol to sculpt around and the banner pole.

Anyone got any suggestions about how to sculpt the shoulder pads?

Very nice work fella, the armour style is particularly sticking, i really like the Dornian heresy stuff, and this is no exception! The cleaner lines and angular plates really give the armour a more advanced look. Really looking forward to seeing this come to life!

Wow, thanks for all the encouragement guys, much appreciated!!

I feel a little sheepish to admit that I didn't take any pics of progress last night, was not a lot to show to be honest. Just cleaned up a few areas and had a stab at sculpting the hands, which turned out so rubbish that they were scrapped!

By the way, does anyone know if acetone/nail polish remover has an adverse affect on cured polymer clay?

Thanks again everyone!

Hello all, update time! After a rather rubbish attempt at sculpting hands the other night, they were scrapped and I focused a little more and had a clearer idea of how I wanted to approach them.

The fingers were sculpted, then cooked. Once cooled, the thumbs were then done. Makes things a whole lot easier!

After cooking the thumbs, carefully removed the proxy stock from his steel like grip and I think, job’s a good ‘un.

Oh, and don’t worry about the weird head looking thing in there, just some blutak to work out volume and scale for the helmet sculpt.

I love the quality of the work, but isn't his anatomy a bit off-kilter at his right hip? He'd have to dislocate his hip to get it to stand out at that angle.

I guess the photos look a little out from this angle, but birds eye view and it's fine.

I am actually standing like this in the office right now...getting some weird looks as you can imagine...hehehe

Man, it's been a while since I posted anything about this one.

Shoulder pads this time:

http://www.double-eagle.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/pads_11.jpg

I had a suggestion of making a former to base the shoulder pad sculpt on, I tried this, but altered it a little. Ended up making a mold with the former and cast the pads in resin.

I think my resin is out of date, as it get a LOT of surface bubbles forming after it has started to set. Perhaps it's gassing when it shouldn't...

Here's a shot of some place holder items and the pads in place:

http://www.double-eagle.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/damocles-with-pads.jpg

As usual, thanks for looking all!

This looks pretty good actualy. I'm curious to see what you will do with the backpack since there is no clear shot of the original design. Judging by the rest of the sculpt though, I'm quite sure it'll be awesome!

Good job, keep going!

OK, me again, not had a chance to work on this as much as I had wanted to, I stupidly said that I would have it built and painted by the end of July. That is not going to happen…

Anyway, worked on the helmet, which took far too long to do, but there you go.

Also, as a result of some feedback, I re-sculpted the knee pads. Much better now I think.

His legs are a bit on the skinny side, imagine fitting two muscular legs inside the armour, either the marine has to have scrawny legs or the armour is as thick as paper...

Dragunov09
30-07-2010, 13:45
Yep, it's a fair point. I am currently working on adding some more bulk to these areas so stay tuned!

Hi all, after a lot of feedback and I must admit, I noticed it too, I have added more bulk to the lower portions of the armour. I also tried to fix a weird anatomy issue with his right hip, it looked a little…odd.

Also did the Tau inspired plasma pistol. Needs a little filler here and there to really sharpen it up, but am pleased with how it came out. I added a quick layer of white primer to disclose any issues so I have some areas that need attention.

http://www.double-eagle.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/white_knight_2.jpg

Overall, not too far from the finish line from a sculpting point. I need to add some filler here and there as some of the fimo has split in parts, I suspect that has something to do with repeated bakings, but have not got enough experience with it to say for sure.

That is looking rather excellent so far, what are your plans for the powerpack? as I didn't think there were any particullarly good pictures of it

Dragunov09
06-08-2010, 17:03
Thanks mate, will have to wing it for the power pack. Thinking of a hybrid of the regular marine style backpack central part, with the curved upper bit and then the Tau style 'vents'.

I will scratchbuild rather than sculpt it too.

Thanks for looking.

Well after a bit of planning and some scratching of heads, decided to do the one as the hybrid I feel it’s meant to be. The backpack is not featured strongly in the artwork that this build is based on, so I hope I have done it justice here. Of the parts that I can see, I have tried to recreate.

Make with the images I hear you say:

Looking really great, it's nice to see a model project that's so original :chrome: will it have a proper display base, like a socket or something ??

yeah, have a great big slab of slate that I am planning to use... will see how it fits once all the armour is done.

Thanks for the comments all, I can see the finish line ahead!!

One thing I loved about the Dornian Heresy is the direction the Ultramarines took in being un-dogmatic in terms of technological development - the Tau style plasma pistol is a fantastic example of this and bang on theme. Excellent work. :)

Thanks for the feedback all, just letting you know that I have now started with the painting on this one.

Undercoated in GW black Primer, then a a coat of Vallejo persia blue

http://www.double-eagle.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IMG_8168_edit.jpg

A salt mask was applied using water and a brush.

http://www.double-eagle.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IMG_8180_edit.jpg

Then once dried, a coat of Vallejo Dark Blue. Once that was down, added a little GW skull white to the mix and did some highlights. Let this dry through (probably best left overnight, but I didn't wait). Gently rub off the salt with an old toothbrush and some COLD water.

http://www.double-eagle.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IMG_8183_edit.jpg

http://www.double-eagle.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IMG_8187_edit.jpg

Next step, is to highlight various areas with a brush and pick out some of the edges. I may add in some additional areas of a mid blue with a sponge, just to get a little more variation in there.

This has also taught me that I really do need to get some proper lighting set up.

Thanks for looking all.

Yep, all done with AB. Am just looking for a good mix for the Vallejo paints in the AB they appeared to be a bit gloopy with just Tamiya thinners. Will try distilled water instead maybe.

Anyone have any recipes for this?

Thanks guys.

You're welcome dude ;) Gotta say I'm strongly considering replacing all my GW paints with Vallejo, they're just so much better and their line of auxiliary products are way better than most other manufacturers.

Dragunov09
25-08-2010, 10:06
So, it all started pretty well… Have done the salt masking as you know, then I went in to ‘tidy up’ some of the more random elements of the process and I think I have lost something of the charm of the masking method in doing so and also, some of the realistic flatness of the colour. It’s started to look like it’s ‘painted’, that’s not what I was after at all.

http://www.double-eagle.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IMG_8203.jpg

http://www.double-eagle.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IMG_8201.jpg

I am seriously thinking about repainting and starting again. I know that there are a number of steps in this project to get it to look right, but I am just not happy with some aspects of this paint job. The main part being the abdominal sections, I may redo these and see what that leaves me with. But then again, I don’t want to waste any more time on this avenue if I am going to paint over it.

Anyway, what do you guys think?

spaint2k
26-08-2010, 03:57
I think a lot of people on here are unsure of what to say because seriously, this is a fantastic piece of work that you've made here and commenting on it seems a little bit pretentious, but I'll give it a try.

Essentially, I agree with your concerns about the latest work. There's nothing wrong with the painting per se (it's excellent), but it really does detract from the lovely work you'd done with the salt. I think it would be worth starting over and not doing this step on the rework.

tcraigen
26-08-2010, 05:34
I think it looks great technically, but seems to over power what you've made. Take a look at the high end iron man sculptures and sculpts iif you can. While the paint is usually tonally similar it looks very realistic. I would think it should look almost automotive in this instance and less tank like.

Dragunov09
26-08-2010, 09:22
Thanks guys, firstly for the high praise indeed that you have given and secondly for hitting the nail squarely on the head for me.

Currently, I think this looks like a 28mm model, rather than the larger piece that it is. I think I need to worry a little less about painting light on there and let the scale of the model capture its own.

Sigh, back to the AB then... hehehe
