Hi, I'm new to WHFB and have just bought the empire battaliion box set. I have observed that most of the time units are 5 wide. I was a bit miffed when i realised that the box set gives you 8 knights. How should i use these? is 4X2 a viable option, if not why?

In older editions ranks only needed to be 4-wide, so many of the older boxed sets are holdovers from when 8 models could constitute 2 ranks. It's the same with 16-model infantry boxed sets.

Ah right thanks, did not know that. So basically my choices are either to find a couple more knights from somewhere or just to use the 5? would anyone ever put 5 in the front rank and just 3 in the rank behind?

tbh, your probably best off trying to get some more knights (maybe get a mounted character to join the unit? ) until then id see no reason why you couldnt use 3 in the rear rank, although id probably recommend going for just 1 rank of 8, its wide, but at least you`ll get extra attacks in combat.

In 8th edition you'll be wanting another rank to negate enemy ranks, so you might want to find enouhg knioghts to fioeld a unit of 10 or 12 (5x2 or 6x2)

I'm sure knights are probably easy to pick up off ebay or the trading part of this forum. The plastic knights are in almost every Empire battalion and army boxed set, as a result many people end up with more of them then they need.

Just field them 5 + 3 until you get two more models. You get extra attacks from the knights in the second rank, just not from the horses. You indeed need two full ranks after combat to negate the rank bonus but you will probably get +1 for charge, +1 for flank and then kills. If you combine your charge with a second unit - preferrably ranked infantry - the enemy might not have enough ranks to matter.

Yeah, in 8th ed 6x2 will be a good size for them. For now knights work best by maximising their attacks on the charge. Since most units are 5 wide a unit of 7 in a single rank is a good choice.

ah well that suits me , means i dont have to buy any more models! thanks
