Due to high acclaim in the Mantic Fanatics social group I am here to present the tale of Mantic painters. This is basically a combined log for all those who wish to post the creation of thier armies of Mantic Games figures.

There is no set time limit, or amount of models you have to build and paint, rather this log is for all those interested parties to share thier mini's.

A list of current participants is below. If you wish to join either post here or personal message me and I will add you to the list.

Well, it just so happens I have been allocated a few moments to make a start on these.
Not very exciting but I figured I'd get this paintball rolling

Seeing red

Perhaps mine and Gaarew's Dwarves in a battle would look like the purple mist of the Undead ;)

BTW what colours are the rest of you going with for these little fellas?

So you paint on sprue eavy? how about when you clip them off to assemble?

Da Eavy
11-08-2010, 01:05
I start on sprue as I find them easier to handle.
Just a bit of a touch up once they're assembled.
Not everyone does but I find it much easier and time saving this way.
I also like to know they are thoroughly painted, even the bits you don't see i.e whole weapon handles, backs of shields etc.

Never enough. Get them up here!
I think it'd be a shame to leave them out because they're already finished.
Plus it's great to be able to refer to other peoples work when doing my own!

Sign me up!

It'll be a month or so before I can get stuck in (and I'm waiting for those cheap army boxes to come out before buying any more), but I have a lot of plans for an undead army, already thought of a paint scheme that hopefully won't take too long or look too horrible.

I'm going to go with black undercoat, light drybrush of grey, metal drybrushed in tin then silver, wooden areas picked out in dark brown, bone simply painted in white with the black underneath providing high contrast then a brown/grey drybrush to make them look like they've come out of a dusty crypt. For basing I'm thinking tundra-style grey + dead grass.

I'm considering drilling out the eyes on my skeletons, the more I look at them, the more I don't like them. They could be awesome if done properly with object-source lighting, but I don't plan on spending that much time on them.

Currently trying to figure out a good way to make revenants with great weapons, seems like it'll be quite difficult to pull off.

Thanks for the new pics of those revenant knights, I like how the sculpts have so much movement in them, as if they're really hurtling forward at full gallop rather than taking a leisurely trot.

lord marcus
11-08-2010, 01:59
possibly take a spear, cut off the spear point and the sharp end of another revenant type weapon and attach?

Oh, and added SS

Im actually in the same boat, the problem I have with the current Revenant is you can't easily make them into models with great weapons and they don't seem as heavily armoured as the knights. I have been thinking of using something from the LoTR range to convert some, just do some head swaps, change the odd arm, etc.

I saw you idea however it dosn's solve the problem of the shields, its ok, i just found some really cool models you could

http://www.perry-miniatures.com/images/WR/wr_15.jpg
http://www.perry-miniatures.com/images/WR/wr_14.jpg

Perry miniatures under war of rose, I would then just do some head swaps and use the heads from either the Revenants or skeletons. I think they work out at about £1 a model and they should be the same scale as the Mantic ones

Hmmmm, how does making sure all the mould lines work out when they are still on the sprue. I can't imagine it is an easy job cleaning them off.

Good start Eavy, I guess I will have to paint up something new then, I think my Revenant knights have had enough attention :)

Oh, I get it. Maximum exposure by posting 'the same old' :) pics in another thread. Might have to steal that...

If you have any spare Ironclad great weapons, or plan on some Ironwatch (or any of the sets/boxes/deals) including them, you might be able to garner a few. The Ironwatch regiment would give you 10 that you don't really need to use on the Dwarfs.

Muh-muh-mould lines? These guys are pretty clean actually. I've not done any cleaning up that way. I'm not going for Golden Demon ;)
I can't see there being much of a problem cleaning mould lines on the sprue (before priming) apart from where they are attached.

The hammers would be way too big and not fit well with the revenants.

Right now I'm thinking that there's 2 torsos on the skeleton command sprue (and the revenant command sprue), with no shields, and another 1 on the troop sprue that could easily have it's shield arm clipped off.

From that point onwards, I'm thinking spear haft + sickle top, and spear haft + revenant weapon top to make up the great weapons, with some cutting and repositioning of the arms to hold some of the great weapons in 2 hands.

Then, revenant armour pieces and revenant head to finish them off.

Only drawback will be needing about 120 skeleton or revenant models to have enough parts for a regiment of 20, but I think I might be able to pull it off.
If I ever need any more than that, I'll just fill the back ranks with regular revenants.

Also, is anyone else highly tempted to mount the skelly dogs on cavalry bases and call them dire wolves? :D

I think it would be pretty coo to mix in weapons from all the different forces, as if the Revenants have taken trophies from their fallen foes. Or you could just deadify a unit of Ironclads and have Dwarf Revenants.

And yes. But that is a lot of boxes to make just a few small units of Dire Wolves.

If im told it's to green now I'm going to slap someone

Well I would certainly take a look at the skin, personally I'm not a fan of the grey skin for vampires, I thin you want a more flesh color, a very pale flesh yes but still a flesh color.

lord marcus
15-08-2010, 05:22
Really? I think the grey skin fits as vamps are supposed to be drained of blood or somesuch.

Anyway, my necromancer/priestess yet to be based and named:

Really? I think the grey skin fits as vamps are supposed to be drained of blood or somesuch.

That would depend entirely on how recently they had fed.

Of course, it would all depend on how you view Vampires. There is either the traditional Vampire, which was a way of explaining inexplicable death by disease, which would look like a corpse, or have a ruddy complexion if it was flushed with blood. Or corpse gases... Or the Hollywood Vampire, which is little more than a metaphor for sexuality, and would have porcelain skin, straight teeth and a fashionable hairstyle. Monobrow and glitter is optional.

For the skin mate you need to dry brush the raised areas first , maybe with space wolf grey, then I would highlight up from this, if you dry brush first if helps pick out of the features which makes highlighting easier, another idea is to use a ink first as well.

Thanks Lord Marcus!

Test models for my Dwarf army. Idea is that Blue and Silver are the main colours, but different units will have a different contrasting colour. For example, for these crossbow men, purple is the contrasting colour. Next unit I paint it might be white... Not sure if it is a good idea or not...but I really don't want an massive army of models all the same colour.

http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/7855/kowdwarfs.th.jpg (http://img690.imageshack.us/i/kowdwarfs.jpg/)

Since I only intend to play Kings of War with these models, I mounted the models on regimental bases, instead of individual ones. As a bonus, I need fewer miniatures per unit and can have it look more dramatic. the organ gun still needs a base, though.

So far I only build the models I got at the open day, but I had a lot of fun building them and I do like the look of the units. Maybe I“ll expand this small army later on.

Cheers!

Ok so they are very nearly finished. Base materials are on order. I have to paint the skulls on the flails and I'm struggling to paint the wraps on the scyths. Might give the faces and hands a wash too but other than that and a general tidy up....

They took far longer than expected but that's mainly due to not finding time to paint.
