View Full Version : Non-GW ratmen?

I see plenty of companies making stuff I can use in an Empire, Elf, Dwarf or Orc & Goblin army, but what about Skaven?

I've seen 15mm ratmen, but nothing in 28mm.

Anyone?

I accidentally bought some ratmen made by Harlequin a few days ago. Not sure if they still make them. Ugly as sin.

AFAIK they do.

Harlequin made some pretty nice dwarfs. Get the slotta based ones rather than the integral based. Mixed well with 3e Norse Dwarfs.

Also BTDs Men of Averaign are great if your Bretonnians are based on the 5e (2nd generation) figures. The only downside is that some of the poses are awkward and stiff. Knights are terrible.

Some of their Orcs and Goblins are decent, though more reminiscent of earlier era O&G than the current hulking monstrosities.

Most of their other "not GW" ranges I'd give a pass on...

I wouldn't suggest ordering from BlackTree. From what I have heard, their business have been more or less screwed up for the past couple of years.

Aren't the Black Tree ones the old Harlequin sculpts?

Had a quick look. GW can definitely have my money rather than Black Tree. Very dated models.

And this is a real shame. Some of their ranges had some pretty decent products in it. Their Crusade range of historicals covered a period many manufacturers don't cover well, or at all (2nd Crusade, mid 12th C period), and at one point I was going to build an Early Imperial Roman army based on their figures. But for now, with the reports of people waiting a year(!) to get their complete order...makes me wonder how they stay in business...

Yeah they were called Harlequin, then Icon, then Black Tree.

They had trouble paying everyone. At the time it was legal to declare yourself bankrupt, and change your company name (so you didn't have to pay your debts off)
The only thing you had to do was change your title within the new company
Hence all the names changes.

I'm guessing the reason the company is a screw up now is because the guy who ran it no longer does (he's gone to usa making guns) and his brother runs it.

i reckon, that after looking at models that aren't GW you realize why all of us pay so much more for Citidal quality

To be honest most people look elsewhere because of cost or bad sculpts. But with the release of the new skaven models and the quality of the ones in the new warhammer boxed set why would you want anything else.

Vermen plaguemonks. They even got the skaven symbol on their standards. Some people really have no shame I guess.

I've never seen good skaven models from other companies, but I don't find the post valid that says that:

It's just wrong when you look at the minis that can be used for other armies. You are out of luck if you like skaven, lizzies, beasts or ogres.

But armies like brets, empire, dwarfs, vc, high elves, some chaos stuff and greenskins(really hoping that mantic comes out with plastic savages and goblins, to combat what will likely be $25-33 for 10 savage minis), don't have to settle for GW prices and get sculpts as good or better than GW sculpts.

For anyone that cares, but doesn't already know about them, here's some sites with good minis. Hopefully in the future more of the 'beastly monster' armies will get good alternate models for reasonable prices.

Heartbreaker hobbies and games had some good skaven sculpts, they actually fit in with the current minis, I've seem them turn up in an old collection without someone knowing they weren't gw.
