View Full Version : Chaos Lord on Dragon? (Model Choice)

I'm thinking of starting a WOC army to really give myself a kickoff for 8th! I'm going to be fielding a Chaos Lord of Tzeentch on a Dragon; anyone got any ideas or recommendations for what models I should use? What have you seen work?

Here are a few things I have to keep in mind:

1. No matter what model I use for the Chaos Lord, it has to be easily converted to look Tzeentchish.
2. The Chaos Lord model I decide to use has to be made to look like it's mounted on the dragon. I've seen people just glue regular models on top of a dragon... looks so terrible.
3. I'd prefer the Chaos Lord to have a shield, as my Lord wields an Enchanted Shield.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Although it's quite hard to get hold of, I will always recommend Egrimm Van Horstman on Baudros.

If you don't mind dropping a chunk, the High Elf dragon coupled with the WoC Lord on Daemonic Mount can look pretty good, especially a Tzeentchy one.

Not sure what to suggest for your lord model because well most seem hard to convert or work with. For a dragon though if it dosen't have to a games workship model or well a model at all I'd suggest looking at Mcfarlane's line of dragons. They are really amazing figures/models.

The one guy in our gaming group wanted to mount his chaos lord on a dragon and used one of the Mcfarlane's dragons. It looks really nice. The biggest problem would be basing the dragon. However they do come with their own scenic base which will keep them upright. Just depends on your group.

Some of those definitely look awesome, I'm just not sure if I'd use it for WOC. If I played High Elves, I'd definitely use one or two of those; they're awesome!

What do you guys think about the Chaos Knight Champion model? He looks awesome and I think it'd work. Any thoughts?

The Ultraforge dragon is by far the sweetest. It has a howdah for your lord to sit on and i think it could look rather tzeentchish.

As a devoted player for the last decade for Chaos, I must say a well equiped Lord and devoted chaos dragon you could do alot of nasty things to the enemy.

If your looking for Ideas, just look at Forge world, I have been collecting a long time, and the best conversion Ive done was mount my converted Chaos Lord onto The Emperor Fire dragon, I have used him as a standard Chaos Dragon in 7th edition.

I have two questions, one in the current errata for WoC it states for us to Ignore the chaos dragon selection. Is this still current, or may i still use my dragon?

The other is a Forge World question, I had a pdf with the emperor fire dragon, and it had not stated if I could use him as a fully functional mount?
I was wondering if anyone had a current PDF?

The Galrauch model shouldn't be that hard to mount a character on; I'd use the legs from a chaos knight or something.

Yeah I know what you men SiNNix I've thought about picking one up to use as a mount for a dark elf lord. Alot of them do look more elfish then chaos.

This is a link to the two headed dragon that the guy in my gaming group used. It looks a bit more chaosish. If I ever get a pic of what he did with his I'll put it up for you to see.

Psybilliah and Justicar, those are both awesome models! Pretty hard to choose between them... but I do have a question for you, Justicar. Two, actually.

1. How much is that model and how would I go about buying it? I live in America.
2. Are those dragons pretty close and realistic in size compared to Warhammer models? I'm familiar with Ultraforge sculptures, but not McFarlane's.

Thanks, the both of you!

Well SiNNix that dragon is beefier then the high elf one but I believe it's roughly the same height as say the wood elf dragon. It's just that unlike some of the weedy dragons GW has put out it's beefy and looks like it could ruin a do gooders day. Also I'm pretty sure it's not bigger then the new gangly giant GW put out.

As to where to find the models I too live in America. They used to sell the Mcfarlane dragons at places like Toys'r'Us, Walmart, and Spencers. I also think you can find them on Ebay stores which might be your best bet for that specific one. As to price I think when I bought a few of them as presents for a friend of mine they were roughly between 15 and 20 bucks. However that was a few years ago and prices could have changed since then. Sorry I can't be a bit more helpful.

The highelf dragon makes a very nice start for a chaos dragon. (In current fluff theyre all decended from a Highelf one too). It needs a bit of work on the necks, and some general sanding down of armor, but its well worth it in my opinion.

Remember that for a chaos dragon you need two heads :)

Yes that was my plan as well. Proably I'll put him on a converted High Elf Dragon.

Wow, that looks awesome from a distance. Do you have any close-up pictures of that? How was it done? I'm not very good or experienced with conversions; I usually just have my brother do them as he's awesome.

The most obvious one would be the current highelf dragon with an extra head. The woodelf one could be sweet as well (greenstuff mutations over the leaves and you have a dragon with a group of daemons on him).

In either case another head is needed.

The easiest would ofcourse be to take Galrauch and this should work well unless you want Galrauch in your army in addition to your chaoslord in which case the lord ofcourse needs another dragon.

one in the current errata for WoC it states for us to Ignore the chaos dragon selection. Is this still current, or may i still use my dragon?

It doesn't say that at all, it simply tells you to remove the section that tells you that Dragons come from your Hero choice. Now they come from the same section as the character riding them as they are part of his wargear essentially, so a dragon for a Lord counts as part of your overall Lord allowance.

LOTR nazgul lend themselves well to this, they are a good size and the serpentine necks are easy to work with

What happened to them? I can't find them anywhere on the GW site anymore!

Yeah, that could probably work perfectly, actually. Looks more like a drake than a dragon, but I could definitely convert it a little.

I'd try the High Elf dragon conversion and use a Chaos Knight as a rider. It's cheaper than any other suggestion so far (got to love Ebay) and should look great on a table if done correctly.

umm... chaos doesnt have dragons anymore. only the elves are allowed to take dragons in the new erata, look it up.

:wtf: The only possible reason I can think you would say something like this is a horrible misinterpretation of the FAQ telling you to ignore the section which tells you that they take up an additional Hero choice.

Indeed, the FAQ even states to "Ignore the note on including Dragons in your Warriors of Chaos Army," while the box out is titled "A note on including Dragons in your Warriors of Chaos Army." Seems pretty clear cut

"We arbitrarily (or for game balance, who knows) decided we should prohibit our loyal customers from spending money on ludicrously expensive dragons". Sound like GW to you?

Surely it's possible, with a bit of Green Stuff, to get a rider (Knight, maybe) to sit atop Galrauch?
Solves the two-headed problem, saves a fair bit of conversion work.
Not a beautiful model though...

Seriously? I think the Galrauch model is amazingly cool.

try a converted carnosaur with some balrauch wings.

I've not seen galrauch in the flesh but in every photo he looks really terrible.

either imriks dragon or malekiths seraphon, imo, look like nice chaos dragons if painted nice.

In either case another head is needed.

The thing about a Chaos Dragon is that it is a Chaos Dragon. No head at all is as likely as 2 heads, especially when it is the mount of a Tzeentch marked lord.

Anything that looks suitably draconic (or looks like it may justify the stats) would work perfectly well.

LOOK AT THIS!

This is (imo) by far the coolest chaos lord on a dragon ever made.
