It used to be a piece of wargear that gave you a free shot at Infiltrators pre game within 4D6" ;)

'An Auspex is a short-ranged scanner used by space Marines to detect hidden enemy troops.'
Codex: Space Marines (4th ed.), pg.23

Space Marine Auspexes do not currently have rules (except Black Templars and Daemonhunters...)

What Lord Damocles said, it's a device used to detect life signs and movement in semi-close proximity to the user. if you've seen Aliens you've seen a Auspex with their Motion Sensors.

An Auspex is more than just a motion tracker. It's also a bit like a Tricorder from startrek.

If only that was a typo, a marine with a Tricorner would be great. :p

I think the auspex evolved from the scanner wargear card from 2nd edition 40k, that allowed you to detect units that had gone into hiding.

I did mention the detecting life signs as well as movement, I just used a simple example with the motion sensors to get the message across easier, it's what they seem to be used for most of the time ;)

I doubt everyone watches/watched star trek to know what a tricorder is :p

Actually, given that this is a forum for scifi board games, the assumption that most readers know enough of star trek to have encoutered the term Tricorder isn't too farfetched, though not neccessarily correct of course.

I think an Auspex is a hand-wavian piece of technology that incorporates the RT era elements of Bio-scanner, Energy scanner, Rad Counter and Auto Senses (which were often used in conjunction anyway) as well as a hand held version of Tendril Sensors.

Since the question's long since been answered, I just feel the need to add a historico-linguistic note. ;)

Its one of those devices you use to detect the enemy units near your positioin. Frequently malfunctions to put you and your unit in a bad/dramatic position. Not to be relied upon.

Personally I always thought something like this would be included in power armors suite of abilities, but I can see it being a scanner.
