Hi

Once cast, can chain lightning bounce on to an enemy unit that is in Close combat?

You tell me. Does it seem natural that a spell that cannot be targeted at enemies in close combat can proceed to affect enemies in close combat?

Direct Damage spells can in two cases affect units in close combat.

Flame Storm, Pit of Shades. These both do so because of the scatter inherent in each spell resolution. They also can potentially affect friendly units.

The key point for chain lighting is (I believe) that you don't randomly bounce it. The casting player chooses another enemy unit. Which seems like it is prohibited per the targeting restrictions.

Can the bounce of Chain lightning go onto units that are outside the initial range of the spell?

Yes, it can.
The casting range is only ever the initial range of the spell's target, much like how you can fire a stone thrower at it's maximum range and have it land beyond it.
