All hail the Allfather!

Welcome to my new Space Wolves log.

On reading the new Space Wolf codex, I was intrigued by a new unit entry - the Thunder Wolf Cavalry. I'd never thought about doing a Wolf army before, and their background didn't really interest me previously, but this new unit piqued by interest. I've always had a thing for Imperial Guard Rough Riders (check out my Savlar Chem Dogs log for more on that!) and maybe the interest came from there...

So, I shopped around on Ebay and sought advice from forums as to Thunder Wolf options. Obviously, I needed Canis Wolfborn but I knew I would have to go down the third-party route so far as the other Thunder Wolves went. I eventually settled on Mythicast Inc, who sell these wolves on Ebay...

Here's how they look on arrival...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d194/Gorman2000/Space%20Wolves%20Thunder%20Wolf%20Cavalry/P1100105-1.jpg

I bought 10 Thunder Wolves, and Mythicast had a deal on so I also received an Iron Priest on a Wolf with four Cyberwolves. Here are the Cyberwolves:

And these are some painted examples - note these are still very WIP, with shoulder pads, backpacks, battle damage and general touhcing-up still to be done.

Comments and criticism is welcome as always.

I've managed to make a bit more progress on the Thunderwolves.

Here are two more WIP models; the riders need a bit more work with packs and shoulder pads etc.

As this is quite a small and elite army, I've only gone for 2 Thunderwolf squads, so this is a long way toward finishing the project!

I must admit that I have never been sold on the idea of the Thunderwolf Cavalry but this model is particularly cool, I love that they are howling together!

Very cool. How did you obtain the riders' legs? Are they SW legs fitted onto the wolves or did the wolves come with legs. I have models from another company that comes with the rider legs, but they didn't look as good as these.

Cheers all, glad you like the cavalry.

Just finished the backpacks and shoulder pads and added some weathering - other than some very minor details the squad is now finished. I will try to do a shot of them very soon.

The legs come pre-cast onto the thunder wolves - they are alright but need quite a bit of green stuff and filing to get into shape. An easy option none-the-less.

I have been looking for nice wolves, I though that the wargamma battle wolves (http://www.mrdandy.com/wargamma-battle-wolves/) were nice, but your ones are even better!

I'm always a fan of your logs Gorman so count me as subscribed too.

The wolves and riders look really nicely done, I like the bionic parts on the wolves themselves.

Cheers Bugbait - I did look into the Wargamma wolves but they are a bit too Steampunk for my idea of the Space Wolves. Nice option none-the-less!

Managed to get a bit more progress on my wolves, really enjoying doing them as I have never done a blue/grey army before.

Finished squad:

Some shots of individual wolves:

Tried out some weathering on these models, which I am quite pleased with - using a sponge, I applied Scorched Brown to the edges and weathered parts of the armour, then highlighted the outside with Space Wolves Grey.

Anyways, on with the next Thunder Wolf squad... Comments and so on appreciated as always...

Consider me subscribed to this bad boy... The modelling and painting is fantastic! I had yet to find some converted thunderwolves that looked good (I still dont really agree with the idea haha so was put off to start with) - but you may have changed my mind!

Keep up the great work!

I was quite sceptical of Space Wolves riding on actual wolves when I first heard about it, (maybe I'm a bit long in the tooth for new ideas), but these have me sold on the idea.

Wolf cavalry are definately going on a things to do list for me.

you should paint some of the smaller wolves too & post them, as well as the other one you got with the priest.

Cheers for the encouragement guys - been painting the Wolves furiously this week and should have most of the second squad done by this weekend, so will photograph them and post them shortly.

Also been working hard on the Iron Priest - which us a really nice model - and trying to put a bit of extra effort into the model. Again, should have an update shortly...

thanks for appreciating my sculpture gorman.go visit us again

Glad you dropped by my log. I'm very impressed with these sculptures and think they are easily the best Thunderwolves on the market.

Yeah, that is a nice sculpt - there is another version in the second squad.

Anyway, made some good progress on the next Thunderwolf squad. Now have 3 of the 5 models done, and also working towards finishing the Iron Priest. Here are the finished models....

So I just recieved these models. They took forever to arrive and have tons of tiny air-holes. I'm hoping they are recoverable, but I've never seen a resin model with so many air holes. Did yours have air holes or not?

Thanks much

Cheers - the bolter is standard, from the Space Wolves Pack set - so many nice bits on those sprues....

Appreciate the encouragement!

The models did require quite a bit of work, filling in air holes with green stuff etc. The Marine legs for me were the worst quality, but nothing I couldn't handle. I didn't find my sets much worse than a Forgeworld model. Delivery was about 3 weeks, so not to bad really (I'm in UK).

Anyways, spent a bit more time on my wolves and managed to get another done - very pleased with the results...

Finally finished my Iron Priest, which was a fun model to build and paint. I used a combination of plastic bits, and the backpack from the Techmarine model. The head is from Maxmini "Steam Knights" set.

So there we go - only one more Thunderwolf to go, then a few more wolves and Canis Wolfborn, and then the army will be done!

Got slightly sidetracked by Gabriel Seth, so will be a little while before I make any more progress on the Space Wolves...

Those are some nice Thunderwolves.
I would have thought by now more than Canis would have come out.

Love your wolves, the paintjob is great!
I'm currently painting mine. Do you mind sharing the steps you used to get the fur looking so good?

Cheers - Canis came out a while ago, but as he is a metal model I'm leaving him until last.

Thanks for the comment.

These Thunderwolves are very forgiving of a fast paintjob, and have to drybrushing and washing well.

I did the fur in a few easy steps:

- back undercoat as always
- dark base - usually Charadon Granite, Scorched Brown or perhaps Adeptus Battlegrey;
- mid tone drybrush or overbrush - Graveyard Earth, Calthan Brown or similar;
- highlight drybrush - Deneb Stone, Snakebite Leather or similar;
- sometimes, a very fine drybrush of Skull White or Bleached Bone - be careful if you use Skull White as it can make the final coat look very chalky;
- on some of the wolves I also did a thin wash of Gryphone Sepia or Devlan Mud - all features such as inside ears, mouths and between claws got Badab Black as well.

So that is it really - nice models which don't take forever to assemble or paint.

Here is the last Thunderwolf rider, finished baring some touch-ups and decal work:

Just started work on the cyberwolves for the Iron Priest, then I have about 50 plastic fantasy wolves to do and Canis - and the army is done! I'll have no scoring units whatsoever, so should be interesting to see how the army plays....

Might not play that well but it'll be a striking looking force... real nice work!

...if I was doing one I would'nt be able to resist one 'cocking it's leg' against a fallen enemy!!!

That wolf squad is so dam sweet altogether, be really interesting to see how the army performs witgout scoring units , hopefully in tremendously killy fashion :D

An all wolf army? This I have to see! I'll subscribe!

When you say plastic fantasy wolves, did you mean the ones that the Warhammer Goblins ride?
I use those and they do the job nicely.

Really nice minis you've got there, I like them a lot.

If you don't mind me saying, the only thing I'm not keen on is the ruddy brown base trim - it jumps out too much. I would maybe go for something a little less red? I know it's done to death but maybe graveyeard earth or charadon granite? I just feel it draws the eye away from the model too much.

Only a tiny criticism though, the rest looks awesome!
