View Full Version : Cadians for Golden Demon Diorama

14-09-2010, 14:35
Hi all,

Would appreciate some feedback on these. I know the painting is not 100%, but I am focussing on conversion and overall appearance this year as I have noticed a trend in this. These are 2 chaps from part of a Diorama I am working on.

Wow, their injuries look very cool. Nice modelling! I would love to see the rest of the diorama!

14-09-2010, 16:34
Very nice, the painting is excellent! I like the poses to. Only crit, is that they could be weathered a bit, seem to clean to be in a war! But depends if you are going for that effect!

14-09-2010, 16:41
Yes, I wasn't sure on the weathering. It is post-battle of course, but once you start weathering, where do you stop? If I go for realism they they should be pretty much head to foot in mud, blood and dust.. Hmm. I will look at the whole group together to see.

14-09-2010, 23:11
that's some clean painting you got going here. but since you are using them for the GD, i might as well comment some more. :)
something that's freaking important for GD pieces is to make the faces look real or alive. right now, while already looking pretty, your minis lack the certain...uhm..realism. use some glazes on the skin, some reds and purple, even some green to make the colors look richer. try to use the purple glazes on the parts of the face that are more inclined to lie in shadows.
also use some simple washes to darken the lower parts of the bandages and the lower bodies of the guys. thin the wash down a lot and try to avoid water stains, the color graduation to a darker tone further down the mini will do a lot to make them look more realistic while really not being that much work.

i got what you said about focusing more on the conversion, but glazes and washes are easy enough to do and will go a long way in improving the overall look of a mini and thereby improving the entire diorama in general.

hope you don't mind me saying this. :)

14-09-2010, 23:58
Looking really good man :)

15-09-2010, 00:02
I really like the posing of them, keen to see the rest of the diorama too.

15-09-2010, 00:08
I like what you have done and their is no doubt your conversion work is very good.

I have a couple of points to make though:
1. The left hand of the blonde haired model looks a little large, particularly in picture two.
2. It might just be the photo, but I think the numbers on the shoulder pads need a bit more definition and seem a bit hazy at the edges.
3. Finally, the face of the helmeted guardsman is very nice, but the shading just above the mouth and below the nose is too dark in contrast to the rest of the face, you need to make this change more subtle if you are painting at GD level.

Apart from those three little points, I like the models and am intrigued as to the rest of the peice for GD.

15-09-2010, 00:22
I love the idea.
And the painting looks great so far!
But I agree with other posters--
the faces look still a bit "cartoony".

This is some pretty cool shiz, any modeling WIP's? I'd like to know how you achieved the bandages on the blondie.

15-09-2010, 09:38
Thanks for the input chaps,

I will try giving the skin a couple of washes to tone it down somewhat. Unfortunately I have left things somewhat late this year due to other circumstances so I am slightly limited for time! The blonde chaps hand is a little on the large side. I may change it, but he is standing directly behind another guy so I dont think you can actually see it in the finished setup. In fact with most of these the models are standing behind each other, You know how the setup is when you take a photo with a bunch of your mates, all crowded together with some kneeling down? Like that.

Icecream Boy - If I recall I think i made the bandages using some of the old mordheim skaven bandaged arms.

As a side note, every single model going into this piece is converted. More photos tonight.

Great set up, looking forward to seeing the whole thing!

15-09-2010, 22:30
one word... *suscribed*

keep 'em coming

16-09-2010, 00:34
If I may offer a suggestion as to a quick-fix to the over-large hand - perhaps some red/purple tones to make it look bruised and all swollen up? Just another injury to add to the catelogue :shifty:

16-09-2010, 00:42
Thanks chaps, Have literally just finished the next two. Photos to follow in the morning after my eyes stop melting!

16-09-2010, 09:19
Pictures as promised:

I have tried to do better with the skin on these ones.

16-09-2010, 09:32
The large hand mentioned, where is it from incidentally? And whats the idea of the two other Cadians here? Just another quick thought, maybe you should change the colour of the sling on that one guy, it may help to make it stand out a bit and add variety to the palette. Painting looks top notch too, keep it up =)

16-09-2010, 09:39
I must say, I am in awe of these models, and totally envious.

16-09-2010, 09:39
The large hand is from the Empire Militia/Mordheim Humans sprue. I used to play a lot of Mordheim, and seem to have a lot of bits lying around.

16-09-2010, 09:42
As for the two new cadians...

Wait and see ;)

17-09-2010, 09:59

Here's the next few photos. No more cadians yet, but I have been working on finishing the Tyranid. I'm fairly happy with the skin, but the carapace is driving me slowly mad with feathering the lines on.

C&C Please!

17-09-2010, 10:01

Please note, A) there is still a lot of work to be done, the skin is the only finished part on the 'fex. and B) the guardsmen are not glued on, only pinned atm so that I know their positions. and C) the 'fex is only pinned onto the base as that will be the next step once the 'fex is completed.

Looks awesome mate. Very good work. But isn't better to keep your submission a little more secret? There will be enough imitaters who could copy your work... It's a shame, because it's very inspiring for me. Like myself, I always try to cross borders with guard conversions.

17-09-2010, 17:13
Looking fantastic so far... looking to see how this develops :)

17-09-2010, 21:50
i really like your idea and i like your work so far. but (yes, i know, noone likes the buts) same as the guardsmen, your fex might need some thin washes on it's lower portions. there the skin is in shadow and thus needs to be darkened.

i know that you are running out of time, but seriously, do those washes in between drying times of other stuff or something. you won't need more than probably 10 minutes of doing a couple of washes on the lower parts on the big beasty and there you go.

again, don't take my comment in a bad way, i'm really only trying to help. it's rather that i'd like to see you succeed and at least reach the finals, because i like the trophy shot idea and your clean brushwork a lot. :)

cheers mate.

17-09-2010, 22:03

Thanks for the advice so far. I will be doing some light washes on each of the models once they are completed, so that I can get the shading positions right. More photo's to follow tomorrow!

Ooh wow I totally get it now lol. Looks magnificent, I can't wait too see how your going to base them.
Its great to see the simple Codex colours being used on models too.

18-09-2010, 13:42
Wow, awesome stuff! Very nice and crisp painting there. I can't wait to see this develop.

Keep it up - Can't wait to see the finished product.:)

20-09-2010, 10:01
Right, after 48 hours worth of weekend, and 21 hours of those spent painting, here are a couple of updated pictures I managed to take last night before I fell asleep.

I will get some more detailed photos later.

20-09-2010, 10:18
:) wow. Looking really good now lad!

20-09-2010, 14:25
The base looks fantastic mate. If I would suggest anything it would be maybe churning up the soil around the 'fex. I imagine these things thrashing around a lot before they finally go down for good!

Great work though!

20-09-2010, 14:52
I agree with Emilio, but otherwise - looking fantastic!

20-09-2010, 17:01
looking just awesome! can't wait to see more

keep 'em coming

20-09-2010, 21:22
This looks like a fun project, but if you're looking to place then this is the standard you need to be aiming for:

The UKGD gets guys from all over the place entering, and the level is crazy.

20-09-2010, 23:02
Yes.. Thanks DarkMark. Having entered Golden Demon for the past 10 years I am well aware of the standards needed. I have placed in finalist position several times as well. The reason for posting on Warseer is to ask people to help me improve my techniques, not to just tell me what the standard is.

Thankyou Emilio101, I have added more texture to the base and some claw/drag marks. The first couple of completed and weathered models are glued on now. More photos to follow shortly.

20-09-2010, 23:28
Right, here as promised some more photos. C&C welcomed!

21-09-2010, 01:52
...This really captures what the IG are about. Is the photographer going to be a soldier as well?

I think the term is "remembrancer"...

Though a servo-skull with a camera would be awesome.

Oh excellent job, my only criticism is that the Bug seems to be hanging off the edge a bit, and just erks me. Such an outstanding concept, big thumbs up

Intrepid Adventurer
21-09-2010, 07:09
Now I get it! I kept wondering what those two guys were doing up there with their hands up. Awesome idea! Funny yet applicable to Guard!

Well done in terms of modelling and very crisply painted!

21-09-2010, 09:39
I purposefully designed it so that the carnifex was overhanging the base slightly, as I feel that it gives more depth to the overall diorama. There are a few more figures in progress to be added, so I'm afraid I am going to make you all wait to see the final composition.

Cygnusmaximus - I have a soldier converted holding a TV camera type thing on his shoulder, but I like the servo skull idea! I may have to add one or two around him.

One last thing, I am still undecided on the title. I am wavering between a few but any suggestions anyone has would be much welcomed!

21-09-2010, 10:02
Looking good! The painting is crisp and spot on, the concept is brilliant!

The one minor criticism I have would be the two guys holding the banner. Their hand just don't seem right. If you have to hold up a heavy piece of cloth your hands are almost fists, so you don't lose your grip. Theirs are just too 'open', if you catch my drift.

Can't wait to see this completed. And servo skulls are a great idea. Or maybe a servitor waiting with a tray full of glasses of water, like the boy at the very end of Black Hawk Down?

Monsterzonk :skull:

21-09-2010, 10:04
For the title what about "Would you like to know more?"

21-09-2010, 10:21
At the moment i'm torn between these:
"A picture is worth a thousand words"

Ref the flag, Regimental flags are actually fairly light, like holding a towel really. So they don't have to grip too tight.

21-09-2010, 10:34
Love the idea behind this one, really original.

21-09-2010, 10:51
i think this is just awesomely done, though i'd maybe dirty them up just a bit, to add a little more touch of realism to it

as for the title? "They only lasted another 30 minutes" pretty defeatist, but i think it really hints at what Guard life is all about, cherishing every little battle you win, cause when you're a soldier in the Imperium's Grinder, its only a matter of time

21-09-2010, 11:31
Ref the flag, Regimental flags are actually fairly light, like holding a towel really. So they don't have to grip too tight.

Fair enough.

You could also fill the trench with a heap of mutilated dead and dying soldiers, a Commissar standing above them, and title the whole thing:

"The Guard Stand Triumphant"

Monsterzonk :skull:

21-09-2010, 11:52
Im really liking Monsterzonks idea. I would definitely go with "A picture is worth a thousand words". The other ideas are fantastic but this one appeals to me most.

How about a simple "Say Cheese"

21-09-2010, 12:01
I have ordered 2 brass plaques, One says "Victory" and the other "A picture is worth a thousand words". That way I can see what suits the finished piece the most.
I like the commissar idea, If I had more space/time I would consider it. However, the general idea is that this is the day after the main battle, so all the smaller tyranids and dead guardsment have been removed and buried/burnt and these chaps are having their photo taken with the dead 'fex before it is hauled away by a trojan or somesuch.

21-09-2010, 15:12
Yeah, I suspected there wouldn't be enough time left for bigger changes. I just thought it'd enhance the irony of propaganda a little more: They've lost dozens of men to kill the beast, and then just hide the bodies out of shot and declare it a major victory... Too bad there isn't the time... :(

I think I'd simply go with "Victory" as the title. It has more impact.

Monsterzonk :skull:

21-09-2010, 15:17
A few years back I did something similar, an officer with a couple of guys having their photo taken with a dead carnifex and just out of shot wounded guardsmen walking past and a whole double row of graves - lasguns with helmets on top. Didnt place well though as I didnt put as much thought, time or effort into it. This one is coming together much better.

21-09-2010, 16:46
I would call it "Say Cheese!"

It just seems fitting given the current feeling toward Imperial Guard.

21-09-2010, 18:26
So how do you expect us NOT to steal this Idea?

Great Work

21-09-2010, 19:21
Anyone who can make a diorama in the remaining 4 days that is like this deserves to win! For future reference, steal away! I generally don't replicate my entries!

22-09-2010, 09:31
Couple more pics. On my phone camera so not as clear. Will get more updated ones once I have done some more work tonight.

22-09-2010, 10:05
Looking nice, brother.
I like that the officer is rubbing elbows with the grunts.

22-09-2010, 19:34
Looks really good man, good luck :)

22-09-2010, 19:55
For the title what about "Would you like to know more?"

I was just thinking of starship troopers and the propaganda angle to this piece lol.

23-09-2010, 03:08
That looks excellent!

You should sculpt a medal to pin on that wounded guardsman!

23-09-2010, 03:35
This looks amazing. I like the medal idea, and i'd definitely go with "A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words"

Great job, and good luck!

"...the harder they fall"

23-09-2010, 08:30
awsome! nuff said!

23-09-2010, 08:36
I like it very much!

This is a refreshing new idea! Not Leman Russ with DKoK-guy on it No. 5417862415 or High Elf Prince on dragon No. 63212496!

I like it!

Thanks for the comments guys!

Time to reveal more details on the rest of the diorama. Obviously, still WIP. Still undecided on which of the two title plaques to use.

I will get better photo's tonight. I took these on my phone camera this morning, as the main camera needs to be uploaded to my very understanding gf's laptop, and by the time I stopped painting last night she was asleep. C&C welcomed as always!

23-09-2010, 10:27
Still undecided on which of the two title plaques to use.

I'd still vote for "Victory", now even more than before, and for a simple reason. This diorama (at least to me) conveys a feel that these guys are taking the pict for themselves, and not for propaganda. This is mainly due to the fact that there is no commissar present, who would be responsible for propaganda, and that most of the soldiers are wounded, which is not entirely well suited for propaganda. This is a picture most of them will take to the next warzone, maybe even with the signatures of their comrades. It's not for the rest of the Imperium to see and marvel at the prowess of the Guard.

In short, these guys have faced a horrible, deadly creature and defeated it at great cost. And now they take a pict to commemorate the moment and maybe even to assure themselves that they're still alive. And for this "Victory" is much more appropriate, as it carries a sense of relief and closure. It is their victory, and nothing else.

Well, that's just my opinion, so feel free to ignore it! ;) Overall I think it's coming together nicely. The group in front of the Carnifex looks pretty cool and fits together really well. Best of luck with it!

Monsterzonk :skull:

23-09-2010, 11:00
Monsterzonk - I know exactly what you mean. If thats the impression you get then I am happy, as that is exactly what I was aiming for! When I get the kneeling down chaps completed they will be much tighter in than they are now as well.

Also, I really must get better photos. My phone seems to wash all the colours out of these ones!

Hi all,

Right, I'm nearly there with this thing now. Should have this finished tonight, fingers crossed. Then I can sleep in on Saturday!

I don't have any updated photos yet i'm afraid. I was up until 2am painting and collapsed into bed, then overslept and had to rush to work.

I'll get some up tonight though.

Looking good mate, I really like the idea and the execution so far is spot on, look forward to seeing it finished.

24-09-2010, 10:47
Thanks Sheep! Just been reading through your log, Love the Knight! Awesome stuff.

I have calculated that I have spent about 80 hours painting this so far. And I have consumed nearly 40 cans of red bull and uncountable numbers of cups of tea.

I will be rewarding myself for my hard work with an Ork Freebootaz Army. Watch this space after GD.

24-09-2010, 18:18

Absolutely marvellous diorama.

One thing to point out, I believe there is a hair trapped in the paint near the camera lense on that cadian taking the picture. It might not be visible to the human eye, but can make it out on the picture :D

Saw it on the GW site as well, awesome job! (GW's photography looks pretty dull, but that's another matter.)

Wow, so far this looks amazing though I must agree with the others, just some more washes and shading would go a huge way on these models, also, this is the 41st millennium, the soldiers should be bloody and dirty and war torn. not out of a fashion magazine! :) also there should be corpses. I mean they were fighting nids? there should be more blood and bodies, especially around the fex. just my $0.02 though.

P.S. So sorry, I accidentally posted this without realizing the log page I was on. Silly me (slaps self on head.) Though the finished diorama is amazing, good job.

I think your diorama was one of the best GD entries I have seen for a long time. Such an original and well implimented idea. Well done!
