View Full Version : War on paint

Greetings one and all, and welcome too the war on paint or should that be unpainted minituares. I've decided to lump all my 'projects' here in to one thread rather then two or three all over the place. So yes, after many years in the hobby and collecting and painting odd pieces here and there I have finally decided to man up and get some of these armies properly painted as they deserve. Also, this may save me some money if I have something to concentrate on rather then succumb to the foul misstress of 'ohh shiny new!' I recently joined the tale of fantasy painters, to help with my motivation and a general kick up the... I hope for you guys and girls to do the same to me here. :)

I've never painted an army to a standard points cost as such, don't get me wrong my forces wont break any organisation charts but I do like to pick what I think looks cool or have a theme and run with that. However my love for more then enough troops is somewhat sickening.

Onto the armies then!
For my tale of fantasy painters, I err rather jump shipped and decided to splash out on the army of undead. I enterd the boys league at 100 points a month, but we'll see how that goes and hopefully up it, just depends on work and painting time (No excuses I see) Being a bit somewhat disapointed by the rest of the line (zombies/ghouls) I'm mainly going to be focusing on a skeleton force, led by a Necromancer. I expect a few conversions here (cavalry) I may even attempt a chariot at some point, I am looking more towards the 4th ed here. Still need to find that for some inspiration, oh yes and don't be surprised to see different lines and ranges here in this army as count as'.

Blood Angels, well who could resist not wanting to start an army of them after those Space Hulk termies, how ever I have had a love affair on and off with them for the past 10+ years. With this army, nothing too special exactly though I did want to get too two compaines and supporting units.

As for everything else, I have High Elves knocking around which will get loved eventually, a half finished Dark Angels army with which I'm not to sure what to do with just yet. Ohh yes and another rather ambitous army thats been cycling my thoughts for far too long, though I really should wait and get other bits done; Victrix & Perry Napolenics as an Inqustorial regiment supported by true scale Imperial Fists with nothing but super heavy goodness from forgeworld. (Man can dream right) So I guess that's about the plan right? With this being a random log I'm sure they'll be a few other pieces turn up now and again.

So in reality my main focus will be my Undead force, for the tale but I will be attempting to paint as many BA's as I can inbetween, I'd atleast like to try and nail 5-10 a month, perhaps a little too unrealistic but worth a shot right? Also I have an airbrush now, so I am expecting this to help somewhat.

Speaking of equipment, does any one know where I could buy a decent daylight lamp to help me paint. My painting area is far too dark and the lamp I have now is far to bright casting shadows and also dry's my paint mixes in about 0.5 seconds.

Enough of the jibba jabba indeed, the pictures then:

Undead:
I threw these together a few days ago, and finally got some paint on them today, still WIP. The other four are built.

Blood Angels:
Lots of half built, and half painted bits here

Shocking camera I know, I will have to talk to the gf nicely and see if I can persuade her to let me use the good one. I will post up more of the mess of BA I have at another time.

Thanks all.

Wow first reply?! Shame about the blury skellies but looking pretty good so far. BA looks promising, liking the look of the Death Company (I think) legs makes it a lot more interesting than just standard bits.

Cheering you on with ToFP project! How's the progress?

Try to get some better pics. It's a shame that it's a little blur, since the painting actually looks quite neat from what I can make out.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'm affraid I'm not going to get any better pics atm, however the gf does move in thursday so access to a decent camera is great. No painting update as of yet, I do however have a few days off soon so I can crack on, I did find a lamp to buy this is going to help me out a ton!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Daylight-Lamps-D30350-Twin-Fluorescent/dp/B002V3MOX0/ref=sr_1_25?ie=UTF8&s=officeproduct&qid=1284817783&sr=1-25

A little expensive, but worth it I hope.

As for the BA's, I bought a few DC boxes along with my other bits and pieces, I've tried to spread them out as best I could, purely to make it abit more indiviual and more BA unified. I shall try and get pics of the squads I've already made up too.

Cheers.

Lookin' forward to seeing more of your work. :)

Thursday, a day from work and a day at the painting table, been quite a productive one today which has been quite the change. I got my 10 skeletons done for the ToFP, I just need to figure how I want to base them and finish the blue on a few of them. I realise, this doesn't meet my 100pts for the tale, but this lot has no command group which would bring it close enough. As yet I'm still waiting on my delivery for the rest of my skeletons which does leave me in a bit of a limbo at the present as I want to crack on with building and painting. Next month will see, the next 10 for this unit and start of a necromancer.

So 10 skeletons, just about finished, I even had some time to slap some paint on my BA scouts. Haven't got too far really, but Fatigues, red armour and flesh is all done.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v518/kaleM/Blood%20Angels/DSCF0423.jpg?t=1285265594

Better photo's now I have a camera to hand, nothing great but atleast it has stopped the blurring, will look into a lightbox I think. I'm a disapointed it's not really picked out much in the way of highlights, or he wash's on the armour/blades.
Also noticed the close up on the skeleton, you may well be able to see why I'm never going to use an army painter spray again, very grainy texture on the model. These unfortuantly will be sat at the back of the unit.

So just waiting on the postman to deliver me more skeletons and my lamp, in the mean time, I shall get cracking with more BA's or putting them together atleast.

Juiceytomato has also had me salivating at the possibilty of picking up mcfarlane dragon for my army. I found this one which is very suitable http://guidestobuy.com/images/actionfigure/upload//images/I/51K934AhaKL.jpg just know that getting rid of the fire will be a pain, so I can get a rider on to it.

C&C Welcome as always.

Looking good so far! Always been a big fan of the scout models. Gotta love them. They have such a nice old school feel to them, without looking old and out of place.

It'll be interesting to see your Undead army develop. Original colour scheme, would love to see it in a bigger unit.

If I may make a suggestion about the dragon rider:

Keep the flames on, perhaps repaint it to a more suitable color. Then, for the rider, instead of having him/her riding it, why not have him or her standing on the dragon's shoulder and pointing it in a meaningful direction as if ordering it to attack there. If you can find a model that has the pose, he/she could be putting his other hand on the neck of the dragon in an affectionate way or maybe like for support?

It's okay if you don't want to take up the idea, it's just a thought. :)

I've much preferred the old metal scouts for quite a while now, they fit better scale wise to marines as well and in all honesty they still stand up quite well compared with newer releases. Much better than the plastics IMO.

Glad you've liked the colour scheme, it gives me a break from red too. I've been thinking today that something is missing and I think I finally pinned it down. Heraldry, I thought the shields looks quite empty and was wondering what to put on my banners. I thought of the fleur de lys, but I've seen that done before, I even thought of the Luna wolf symbol, but thought against it. I'm not totally decided but I have thought about a lion head with mane. I know it's very high elfy, but I should be able to bring it across hopefully, I'm now doubting whether I want to do that on the shields as my freehand is poor and I also wanted a simple and quick army. Hey ho!

I had a nice surprise today when this month’s order came in, I beavered away today and I know have the remaining 10 skeletons from the first unit built, 20 spear armed skeletons, 10 grave guard and 8 knights all built.

@Juicy, I may well just have to buy the dragon and give it a look over and play with first, I like the idea, even a necromancer underneath it reading aloft like it's just been raised. I really like the Scavenger one also, I think I'll use that for my Dark Lord though. Yes, see I have even more bits tucked away everywhere, I should add that army up too. I've PM'd you a link.

Thanks for the input all!

Looking good so far...

As to the lamp situation, I was in a similar situation to you until my wife dragged me round Ikea... An anglepoise style lamp for £8. 3 Dayloght bulbs from the Interwebs for £3.50, and I'm good to go. It clamps to a shelf above my painting area, which keeps the heat away from my palette, and I can adjust it for access to different areas of the mini. Sure it's not going to compete with the £100 lamps, but for just over a tenner I love it!

Crube, thanks for the link I shall look into that, I have no idea where the lamp I have ordered is at of yet. I may just cancel it and go for that or a few of them. I'm glad it's online, the thought of going to ikea with the missus makes my heart skip and wallet cringe.

Hey all, I've been trucking along nicely since my last post, regardless of the washing machine deciding to breakdown and flood the kitchen. My lamp has turned up at long last and my next 10 skellies are apart from a banner pretty much done. So I'm in good stead for ToFP. I may just link too WIP pics as I don't really want to pay for a photobucket account and post completed images on here. I'll get some pics done tomorrow.

I also have a dilema now, for some reason I signed up to the local store campaign. So I now need to paint 500pts of BA's for thursday :/ Aswell as a possible further 200 for any wins. I can see some sleepness nights coming up. So in the short term, the thread looks good for some soonish updates!

I still so want that dragon! I wish there was a shop round here carrying it just so I could have a look at it, seems like thanks to RL and old washing machines, I'm going to have to wait on that one till next month.

Woah 700 points of marines in a few days? Ouch!

I managed to find out some info about the Fossil Dragon here (http://www.ddmspoilers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3313&start=30&st=0&sk=t&sd=a).

In case the link doesn't work, the poster on that forum said that the dragon was "16 inches tail to nose (although the tail's normally curled round). Height is variable as you can pose the figure. I have one rearing up (10 inches high feet to head crest) and one bending to snatch characters (height 6 inches feet to head crest)".

He also mentioned the wings were hard to attach, but that shouldn't be a problem for you if you're gluing it on.

Hope it helps.

Has it really been a month? For shame, I need that whip cracking. To be honest, this is the first time I've had the camera to use. We couldn't find the right charger for it, my girlfriend had left it at her parents. Anyway, I haven't been slouching here's some of the work I've been doing since the last post. Hopefuly I can get back to some regular updates.

First up vampire counts.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v518/kaleM/tale%20undead/DSCF0423-1-1.jpg

(Will be finished probably with catch up unit for ToFP next month)

No banner as of yet as I'm still a little undecided on theme, it may revolve around dragons now. Esp how I have now managed to get some new plastic DP's that I'll be using as vampire blood knights. Drums! Thats what I need, hence why I've left two arms, I don't really see why skeletons would blow trumpets what with having no lungs....

I'm also very tempted to pick up some mantic zombies for this army, finally some decent looking zombies! Can't forget that Dragon either ;) With the new edition, whats the view on GG? Im still unsure how to arm. Two handed or S&S?

On too them pesky Blood Angels, this is where the majority of my time has been spent.

Just stopping by for an update, I have to say I've been very distracted from everything fangs. Full credit for this must go too LilLoser and his dark elf thread, emense work there if you haven't seen.. http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=275392

Anyway back on track, inspired as such I have decided to get back to my dark elves. At present I'm having some discusions on commissioning some DE's but I will hopefuly be having a bash at converting up some myself. The army will be based on city of beasts Konrad Clar and one of it's dreadlords and retinue.
I was undecided on what colour scheme to go with I still have nightmares about Green from my Darl Angels, Blue was out as my skelies are of the same colour and I think yellow maybe a little hard to pull off on such a dark sinister race, so yet again more red! Oh the joy. Breastplates and the like will be coloured and not metalic, beasts such as cold ones will also be of the same colour to give a unified theme across the board. I'm not sure where I'm going with this just yet, so hold on. I'll be starting with the core troops of the army first before branching out, but if I do some conversion work I'll post some WiP.

Anyway, the test model. It took me one hour, but I'm happy enough. Please C&C, would like to see how I could improve camera skills excluded ;)

And out of the dark, we have an update!

I have to admit, I've had quite a lot of time of since the end of Jan and I have done nothing. (For shame) I can't even blame the weather either. I have been base coating lots of blood angel troops, but to be honest my heart just hasn't been in it, and with them not being finished I don't really want to upload any.

So I thought yesterday I'd crack the brushes out since I did my test corsair, and the results;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v518/kaleM/Dark%20Elves/DSCF0462a.jpg
From right to left: Mr I know what you did.. Mr Sure shot Mr hmm & Mr Woah, rock!

This now gives me a rank, it's almost like getting somewhere. Still, I'm knocking these out quite quickly and I'm happy with the results so I should be able to add more soon enough.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v518/kaleM/Dark%20Elves/DSCF0467.jpg
Now unfortunately I couldn't find my shades, so I've decided in the meantime to just use some shadow warriors, not ideal but I think they should fit in well enough.

And for that extra surprise, a test knight!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v518/kaleM/Dark%20Elves/DSCF0468a-1.jpg
Hopefully this will show you what I was on about earlier with the red armour plating, chainmail still metallic. I'm not sure if it's just too much red though. Perhaps some black under bellies for the Cold ones? I’ve also left the shield off as I’d like to have a unified heraldry running, I just need a design.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v518/kaleM/Dark%20Elves/DSCF0466.jpg
Unfortunately the camera hasn't picked up the gradient on the colour for the scales quite as much as I'd hoped.
I also went for Herebedragons style on the claws and other boney bits, not quite to the same standard but the effect is nice I think.

Bases: I'm disappointed here, I'm not happy with the brown but it's the snow! I know I've gone wrong somewhere, but it looks awful, almost like a cobweb. I had a look at the GW site and couldn't find all that much, does anyone know of any useful links so I can at least see to which consistency I should mix?

As ever C&C appreciated, excuse poor camera skills.

@Juicy! I really should sub my own thread so I know if someone posts, sorry for the lateness. I still haven't managed to pick up the zombie dragon, money is awfully tight at the present though I do still want, maybe I should have a look at what else I can sell to fund it. :)

Wow thats flattering to read! :D Im glad I've been able to inspire another's painting! I expect applying it to the far smaller claws/spines of the cold one must have been alot harder.

I have to admit the red armour looks really nice on the DE, and the flesh provides a nice contrast. Works really well on the corsairs. I think I'd agree though that the cold one knight is a little too red. I would probably have painted the mount in a different colour to contrast with the red armour. Maybe a dark green? And there's no reason why the scales cant work up to orange to link with the corsairs.

However, I dont want to spoil the really bold colour scheme you've got going at the moment for the army. I'd suggest its probably worth doing a few tests with the cold ones and seeing what works best... and I reckon a second opinion probably wouldnt hurt on this matter! :p

I agree partially with herebedragons. The red armour looks very good but I like the bright red cold one better. I certainly wouldn't change the color of the cold one. mmm, maybe you can do a contrasting color on the base or on his shield?

Your DE stuff is looking awesome! I like how the knight has turned out and although the pic is a little blurry, the shade masquerading as a shadow warrior looks really nicely painted. I'm a big fan of the shadow warrior models. As for using them in place of shades, it's perfectly fluffy! It's like they infiltrated a high elf camp to cause dissension in the ranks and all that :)

It's all a test stage, so nothing set in stone as yet. I may try a few black underbellies or even the dark red to black. It would break it up alot better. The claws and spine weren't to bad actually, I think when the heresy dragon arrives I'll really try and take my time and get that great look you have achieved.

Thanks Tim :) The idea really is to have all beasts and armour to be red to run a nice tight theme. Shield will be black with a red outlined design, I'm hoping this should break up the model nicely along with the black lance. Any idea's for basing? I'm still having trouble with snow and don't mind changing it out.

No offense taken, I know what you mean though as I think the same myself. But when it came to deciding colour theme's red just struck me to much for the DE's. Anyway, the blood angels are going to be taking a major back seat, I'm half tempted to get rid but I'll leave them in the wardrobe of shame for now.

And yes, their is/was a blue army, they shall rise again (poor pun ;))

May well be a few more projects getting started in a few weeks, will have to see how things go, but hopefuly some more painting this weekend.

You read right! I'm dreading it in a way but also looking forward too it.

Time for an update of sorts, I have come to the realisation I am a very lazy painter. I've had a few distractions of late, but I'm out of work again atm so I may have a little time to get some more painted (I hope).

I knew I could never resist so why fight temptation? Ohh that horde of grey plastic on your desk! I'm terrible I know.

It's very WIP, overall I'm happy enough with the yellow, just needs a little tidy up.

As for other distractions, I went to the WMMS recently with my cousin, I had some grand ideas of getting some of the immortal hoplites, I ended up walking away with some ww2 British Para’s and victrix highlanders. This plog is going to get messy quickly.

I also did some re-organising in my room, and have now boxed all the VC stuff together for easier access as well as my half started Dark Angels. They now live on my desk as I have decided to get on and finish them off. Pics too follow...

So Dark Angels, Yeh I have given myself even more, but I did start reading the Purging of Kalidus and new I had to dig my angels out. Squad 1 below was done a little while ago, but the army itself is in quite some disrepair needs work.

So I think my new plan along with a rank, is to paint 5 mini's of each army in turn. That should keep me interested and break up colour schemes and the like again.

This one is great! It's like he's saying "You there! Yeah, you! See what's on my breastplate! Yeah, you do that, y'hear me? 'Or what'? What do you mean 'or what'? Do you see what's in my other hand that's not pointing at you?"...

Nothing special really, just another rank
Another rank isn't 'nothing', my friend. It's hard work and commitment, so here's a pat on the back to keep you going :) You've got a bunch of good things going on here, so don't give up! :D

Thanks for the support Juicey, your right it is much more then just a rank. Were getting there! And yeh the sgt does have a bit of a badass pose about him.

Talking of which, he does have a painted back pack but with out banner. I did wonder how to solve this and realised there wouldn't be enough on the dark angels sprues for me to use across all my squads.

So I give you press moulds!

This should help me out.

I've ripped one of the back packs of squad 1 to give them one from the veteran sprue to really make a squad leader stand out if they get split.

I'm not big on WiP pics, but I really feel I'm getting on with this, I've managed to arrange up squads with all my half built stuff and made an assault squad today, I just need some rhino doors to make that complete and a dread with a moulded banner but it hasn't really come out in the picture I took.

Sgt and lascannon guy.

Does anyone think brown rims would be better?

Small update here:

Squad 2 done, except missing one member. Sorry for the poor pics, I've just got back from work and the light isn't too great now.

I've been a little frustrated lately, I went to get some games in and me chopping and changing what I'm painting gets me no-where! (Although don't expect it to stop) So with that in mind I'm going to head back to concentrating on my VC with the occassional pop up of Dark Elf goodness. I'm also going to make a move on those Dark Eldar, I'm planning to hopefuly play a 1000 point game in a few weeks. So fingers crossed.

I would say I see a bank holiday weekend coming up, put I'm sure I could well be recovering from a hangover, I will attempt an almighty haul though.

Nice dark angels they're coming out really nicely! I think you should stick with the black rims, though be sure to go over and neaten them up to catch those stray bits of paint from drybrushing the base. I noticed it on your earlier models, though you may have sorted that out by now :) keep up the good work!

Cheers HerebeDragons, managed to get them cleaned up. I'm sure they didn't look that bad close up but the camera never lies!

So it may be a little in this bank holiday weekend to make the blitz on the VC that I was hoping for but I'm still going to give it a shot. Plus the fact that I've promised myself that if I finish what I have atm I can get that lovely dragon. Plus their is more skellies coming in the post so before I'm even more overwhelmed better get on.

So sunday afternoon and here's the current state (excuse quick phone pic)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v518/kaleM/tale%20undead/IMAG0011.jpg

Back row: I've had quite a bit of HE stuff lieing around for quite awhile, I know I wont do anything with it so I've decided to incoperate into this army. Plus the fact that 1. Dragon princes cost a lot less then those vampire ones. And 2. The models are ace! So I have some knights and the other box will give me a Lord and Vamp on foot (be sure to paint blood around mouth....)

In box (middle row) We have the first unit I started a little while back, just some clean up needed here really. Half need shields, all need basing, banner and I still need to try and sort some drums for my musc. 2 unit, need undercoating, shields banner etc. 3 unit is a unit of 30, unfortuantly undercoated black (got them through a trade so am not complaining) may take a little longer to paint.

Front row: We have some shinny metal! I hated the Vargulf model, but I found a really sweet werewolf type of model I believe it's rackham, picked up through trade. The other shiny metal one is another HE model.
Graveguard still need work, arms would be a start, basing etc.

Nearly forgot, we have 8 headless horseman too. We shall be digging around for some heads and spears for these fellas.

So here goes!

Ooo there's lots of potential for this army... should look really nice at the finish mark! :)

Always nice to have a 'stock take' every now and then.

Hey I like the idea to use the HE dragon princes as blood knights! That could work really well. Hope you can make them look vampire enough. Look forward to seeing how they turn out!

Cheers for the comments guys. I've made my dragon princes 'straight out the box' so to speak I haven't done anything with them nor the vamp's. Any idea's on how to vamp them up? I'm obviously thinking very pale skin. But with a blue scheme already may be quite hard to not make them look like regular dragon princes. After making them I ran with the dragon ornamentation (sp?) all the way through.

Some quick pics of the building that took place, got rained off on the bank holiday so couldn't get any undercoating done. I'll try and get some painting done this weekend.

Count as vargulf

Does anyone know what base size the GW vargulf uses? I checked the website but it doesn't say. Also, it does have an axe but it needs pinning.

Here's some of the black knights

I even picked up some 'necromancers'

Very inspiring stuff here mate. I'll have to steel the idea for the blood dragons. Looking forward to the painted version. Keep it up, love all your work.

Yes very good work! I think the Varghulf comes on a 50mm base but thats just a guess. Seems sensible to me anyway :p. You gonna add any wings to it? I think they'll look very good with some paint on

Aenarion

@ Tim. Steal away! They'll hopefully move up the painting assembly line soon as I want to do them soon.

Herebe, cheers for the info I'll have a look for one to pick up. See I'd never thought about wings, was quite keen on keeping it a werewolf of sorts but now you mention it I'm not so sure. I may put it to a side so when ever it is I pick some scourges I'll have a look at the leathery wings on it.

We all know painting is half the trick here ;)

That's a good idea for the varghulf! Still in theme :) Looking forward to seeing these painted.

Ok, so I admit my unit of 20 skellies is going painfully slow, so painful that only having base colours down I don't really want to shame myself with a picture. However I do have the excuse of laying flooring in the bathroom and kitchen plus decorating among other things as my distractions.

On the bright side, I'm still itching to get on with my dark angels. I really enjoyed doing them I'm also building up some deathwing squads. I've got some Ravenwing on the way as well. I'll try and get a group picture next week as I'm thinking I may do raven/deathwing combined force for the tale of 40k painters when it comes about. And who knows, perhaps 3rd time lucky I'll finish an army.

But then all this comes crashing down, as I have been told to take everything off my desk and paint these........

(I couldn't leave with out a pic)

So yes, not sure how many of you saw them in Lilloser' thread over in the fantasy section. But this is the first (of many I hope) commissioned units for the army of Karond Kar (More pics here http://loserstudio.blogspot.com/2011/06/commission-red-wolf-of-karond-kar.html )

I'm very impressed with the work Lilloser has done for me here, I can't praise him highly enough. I look forward to working with him further on producing such a fantastic looking army, lets just hope my painting skills are up to it.

So....what to paint then?

Wow, nice job by lilloser. Well, I guess the best thing about the hobby is to paint the thing that excites you the most at the moment. At the very least, that means it will get done :)
