As the topic says: What should I get for a 1K Empire army while playing with 8th edition rules? I've only played with skaven until now and that has been for 7th (and older) editions. And I haven't even tested the 8th edition yet. So any advices would be highly appreciated.

I don't play empire myself so take my advice with a grain of salt. But the lists I tend to see are

Bsb with full plate, shield, helm of reroll armor saves and sword of might
Warrior Priest + horde of halbadiers.
a unit of crossbows or handgunners
mortar
cannon
A second combat unit of knights or more halbadiers.

How about?

Captain
Warrior Priest of Sigmar
Free Company 15 (2ndWeapon; Standard; Musician; Sergeant)
Halberdiers 15 (Halberd; Light Armour; Standard; Musician; Sergeant)
* Detachment - Handgunners 5 Empire Handgun
Knightly Orders 5 (Barding; Lance; Full Plate Armor; Shield; Standard; Musician; Warhorse; Preceptor)
Swordsmen 20 (Light Armour; Shield; Standard; Musician; Duellist)
Helblaster Volley Gun

Way to small. All those units will die, and die fast, and not kill a thing. State Troops and Free Company should be 25-30 string minimum, Great swords 20 strong if supported, even the five knight unit is a bit too small. I'd say a 4by2 unit is a good size. A BSB is essential unless you filed tons of Greatswords, Flaggelants and Warrior Priests. You will also need magic. Maybe a lvl2 with a dispell scroll, LoLife or LoLight.

Yes. You NEED magic. A lvl one at least. and this is Empire, so big blocks of infantry is a must, even in small point games. Leave the Special Choices out for now, as they aren't that effective unless fielded in large groups, with the exception of Pistoliers.

So something like

Captain
Free Company 25 (2ndWeapon; Standard; Musician; Sergeant)
Halberdiers 25 (Halberd; Light Armour; Standard; Musician; Sergeant)
Knightly Orders 8 (Barding; Lance; Full Plate Armor; Shield; Standard; Musician; Warhorse; Preceptor)
Battle Wizard (lvl 2,Lore of Life)
Greatswords 20 (standard; musician; count's champion)

?

That leaves me with 94 points to spend for long range attacks and/or magic items for General?

Give the Captain AoMI maybe? Give him a Great weapon and stick him with the Greatswords, or get a Mortar.

warrior priest on a warhorse in with some knights, preferably the white wolf knights with the warhammers. makes them an awesome hammer that doesn't even need an anvil to hit hard.

personally i don't even mess around with wizards with my empire lists, i tend to add warrior priests and master engineers.

Be careful with that though. Calv. Hammers are ASL, so you do have to pick your charges. Low STR high Initiative units are good for charging if your knights have GWs, as they will no doubt be going last anyway, and that 2+ probably won't be affected. But High STR low I units should be hit with Lances. And as I rule, I tend to take lances, as I find them to be more versatile, but a mounted Warrior Priest is almost a must, especially if the Knights are Inner Circle. STR 6 hits with re-rolls on the charge and then 4str hits with re-rolls? Yes please.

You could also drop the hammer of judgment and upgrade the warrior priest to a Lector.. Gives you one extra dispel dice + 1ld and +1 wound and you can cast 2 prayers a turn to use up some of your power dice

Solid choices! Thanks for the tips. But now I'm going against those damned tree huggers known as Wood Elves. I've 1500 points to spend so how about:

General of the Empire 171.0
- General; 2ndWeapon
- Dragon Bow [25.0]
- Armour of Meteoric Iron [25.0]
- The Silver Horn [35.0]
Captain - Battle Standard 175.0
- Imperial Banner [100.0]
Battle Wizard of the Bright Order 110.0
- Warhorse
- Armour of Tarnus [35.0]
Battle Wizard of the Bright Order 90.0
- Dispel Scroll [25.0]
Halberdiers 28 237.0
- Halberd; Light Armour; Musician
- Sergeant 1 [8.0]
- Banner of Valor (as an Ancient Heirloom)
- Detachment - Crossbowmen 5 Crossbow [40.0]
- Detachment - Crossbowmen 5 Crossbow [40.0]
Handgunners 18 252.0
- Handgun; Standard; Musician
- Marksman 1 [5.0]
- Hochland long rifle [30.0]
- Detachment - Free Company 5 2ndWeapon [25.0]
- Detachment - Free Company 5 2ndWeapon [25.0]
Archers 11 101.0
- Marksman 1 [5.0]
Helblaster Volley Gun 1 110.0
- Crew 3 [0.0]
Outriders 4 129.0
- Repeater Handgun; Light Armour; Musician; Warhorse
- Outrider Champion 1 [16.0]
Pistoliers 4 104.0
- Brace of Pistols; Light Armour; Musician; Warhorse
- Outrider 1 [7.0]

In the past I've had A LOT of problems with panic and this is the closest of anti-panic army I could come. It's function would mostly be just to sit on it's **** and shoot the hell out of those noisy buggers.

Holy threadcromancy Batman!

A few issues:
100 Point banner in a 1500 point list? No. Keep your BSB cheap, give him some protection so he doesn't die. A Lvl2 wizard is better IMO than two level ones. An arch Lector tends to be a better General choice.

Well I decided not to whip up a new thread when ever I needed some advice. And after all I'm more confident when playing VC. ^_^

You're of course right with the banner. I changed it into Wailing Banner (as there's going to be a lot of dryads and treemen in my opponents list no doubt). For the same reason I'm going to keep to bright wizards. To divide the fire. I'm also aware that Arch Lector would be better but I'll still try to run it with the general as we're playing heavily fluffed battle.
