View Full Version : Games Workshop Fantasy Releases Timeline

This is a list I’ve compiled (with help) of Games Workshop’s releases over the years, split by game system. I stress this is a work in progress; it is far from complete or comprehensive. It’s based on a mix of info from these forums, fellow forumites help and my White Dwarf collection (which goes back to 1996). I never collected the specialist games magazines, so there are currently a lot of gaps for those.

There will also I’m sure be many errors elsewhere: things mis-categorised as plastic/metal kits, models in the wrong month, and some just plain missing. If you can help out with further info to improve this it would be greatly appreciated :)

Some guidelines for inclusion:

Magazines, books, terrain, tools, paints and so on aren’t included: this is focused on models alone.

Limited Edition models are a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to inclusion, I’m sure I have a lot of gaps with these, but they’re not strictly excluded or anything. I haven’t included models solely released within the big army sets (usually a standard bearer).

Battle Forces and other boxed sets of armies generally don’t get included.

Also no kits that are just combinations of other kits (e.g. 13th Company Storm Claws).

Where ordinary troops and their command group are released at the same time they just get one entry.

I include it in brackets when a number of variants of one basic thing are done, e.g. if three goblin bosses are released it’s “Goblin Bosses (3)” rather than one entry for each. This usually only applies to leaders with different armaments and so on.

I don’t include models released in starter sets except where they differ from existing models significantly. So the Island of Blood models count, but the Battle for Macragge ones don’t.
Despite these issues I hope it might be an interesting or helpful resource for others. Many thanks to Tarax, Tae, Scryer in the Darkness, mrtn, gunmonkey, Ghudra, someone2040, Daniel36, coyote1066, Coach, MarcoSkoll, AsleepByDay and ADF for all their help.

So the Island of Blood models count, but the Battle for Macragge ones don’t

Indeed, I am certain the Space Marines and Tyranids from that set would be a bit out of place on your list! :p

All kidding aside, great effort, was very interesting to see what got released when! I started Fantasy back in the mid 90s, but really did not play it seriously after my first couple of years until recently due to RL and 40k being more popular with my friends. That definatly explains the Zombie quality vs. the more recent VC plastics.

I don't remember hobgoblin wolfboyz coming out in plastic??

If the blue part is plastic the wolves were, not the hobgoblins. ;)

Looking at that list I think my WD collection starts around early 1997.

Yeah, the blue part is just for the wolves: I shade a name half and half if it's a mix, but the half that's blue and the half that's red doesn't actually relate to the model. I'll change that one though since it would make more sense the other way around.

My oldest one is 201, which was the September 96 one. Maybe I'll prowl ebay and look for some other early ones to take this back further/fill in gaps ;)

Now added the releases of army books/game editions, just to help give a better idea at a glance as to what exactly was released when (with a few early ones I need to double-check when I get home).

Weren't there some characters with that though? I wasn't sure of their names so I went with "zombie pirates" as a default.

Hey cool! Now I can make an estimate on when I exactly started the hobby! Hahaha!
Those '97 Chaos Warriors, those were the hunchbacks, right?

And they were;
Sartosan Vampire
Pirate Captain of Sartosa
Pirate of Sartosa

Those sartosan pirates were much later than the zombie pirates (which were from the vampire coast, which is different than sartosa). I think the zombie pirate list was 100% for converting.

Thanks for the help folks, I'll check in my White Dwarfs about all this zombie pirate business, see where I got that listing from in the first place.

EDIT: That month was one I had to get help for, I couldn't find the White Dwarf. At that point I hadn't specified not to include combo-kits, so I'll take that one out and seek out the Sartosan characters.

Heh, sorry, I think at the time I posted that request I hadn't decided I would show that :p

Hrmm... well the Games Workshop website has them listed individually as 3 Chiefs and a Priest - didn't realise that. However, originally they were released in randomly selected blisters which contained 2 models and were labelled as Skink Chiefs.
If I remember tonight, I'll go find my White Dwarfs from the Lustria time period and check the blisters to make sure. I've always thought the Cloak of Feathers model was a Chief with Cloak + Staff of Lost Sun (Although, an illegal item combination bar everything except Lustria Chiefs). So I'll double check. I can probably check the base tab as well (Since I Never got around to painting any of them :() to see what that says.

Edit : Yep, I double checked. In the Lustria release, all the Skinks were labelled as Skink Warchiefs, including the one with Cloak of Feathers and Staff of the Lost Sun.

Bit of an update: There should hopefully be some substantial updates for some really old stuff, as I've just gotten hold of scans for White Dwarf issues 1-125 (with some gaps)

As a side-note, reading them is resulting in pure concentrated Nostalgia running through my veins :D

I'll set them as that then, since that's what it was at time of release.

You think that gets the nostalgia working? Try it with the actual books! Although I'm caretaking from about issue 90 onwards, almost completely uninterrupted. Epic!
Still haven't read it all, but the letters sections always prove amusing. Shows the more things change, the more they stay the same

Circa 1998 April there were some metal High Elf archers and Sea Guard released, I believe. It was in/around the White Dwarf which features Arena of Blood for first time (221 UK).

There've been a few requests/suggestions for stickying of these timeline threads, so here's a post asking if that could be done? I'll just post in this one for now rather than bumping all the timelines at once just to check this point.

Could it have been either side of that? I've got that White Dwarf and there's no mention of them, but I haven't got 220 or 222, and indeed 220 was a bit of a High Elf themed issue judging by the cover.

Any chance of adding in sculptors? ;)

Tymell

A long-delayed update!

Any chance of adding in sculptors? ;)

Ask and ye shall receive :D Sculptors now included via initials after model/kit (see first post for key). Please note that becuase I stopped collecting White Dwarf 2007 onwards, with most of the releases after that I don't know the sculptors. If any kind souls with said White Dwarfs would be prepared to message me that would be greatly appreciated (and credited) :)

Hopefully this will make it more useful as a resource, even if it does tend to slip down the forum pages over time :p

Also: a few more things added (won some old White Dwarf issues on eBay), including more details like the army book dates. I finished looking through those really old White Dwarf issues (1-100 ish). Very interesting reads, but not much to add in here unfortunately, since back in those days White Dwarf wasn’t just about Games Workshop, and even when it did become part of GW it still wasn’t used to announce every release.

Ahhh the good old days. i started a couple months before the 5th edition Vampire Counts book was released and was playing Undead.

Back when a box of twenty plastic skeletons cost $19.99. Oh how times have changed. I don't see how people can get into this hobby anymore.

One thing that is quite nice to see (in both this and the 40K one) is the number of plastic kits rising. 2000-2004 tends to hover between 10 and 17 per year, 2005-2009 saw this rise to about 15-20 and in 2010 we got a whopping 34*

Let's see if 2011 can top that :D

*These numbers depend on exactly what you count as a new kit, but should be basically accurate.

Maybe adding repackages an re-releases would be a good idea too. You could do it as for putting a * before.

For example, with Basilisk (repackaged) and Mephiston (re-released)

*Basilisk
*Mephiston

You could also put Coleccionist Range in Green, like for example:

Duelists
Merchant & Scribe
Regimental Mascot

A last advice could be add Terrain pieces as Orange and sprues and upgrades as Purple

Of course, these are only ideas if you want to keep doing this post.

Keep up the good work!

Depends whether someone can be found with the complete back issues of White Dwarf (and who can be persauded to thumb through them for the prices)

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll certainly look into doing them. Repackages I may leave off, but certainly terrain and (hopefully) upgrade parts should be do-able, the main reason I didn't have those originally is this actually started as me rating models, and in turn seeing how I'd rate each month of releases. That turned into just listing the releases themselves, and so originally things like terrain and upgrade sprues didn't really have a place in it.

I do have issues 190-324 (save for a few gaps here and there) and it isn't actually the time that would be required that would put me off, it's the worry of making the list too cluttered. I wouldn't want it to be made more difficult to skim through with prices, but if people would like them I'd be happy to add in what I have (eventally :p)

Another thing that might be a good idea would be putting the generalized army name before each item. For example, the item at the top of the list would go from "Hell Pit Abomination" to "Skaven - Hell Pit Abomination".

It's a relatively minor alteration, but it would make the list much more easily searchable via the ctrl-f command. For instance, someone who wanted to trace the evolution of the High Elves army could ctrf-f that phrase and hop down the list, perusing every unit, rather than having to search for White Lions, Lion Chariots, Spearmen, etc. one entry at a time.

Yeah, that's something I'd done with some but not extensively because I worried it might sound redundant for some. But as a search tool it makes sense, I shall add in now :)

Regarding other potential additions:

I think I'll leave off repackages/re-releases for the time being, mainly because it might be a pain to pin them all down. I like the idea of adding terrain (possibly upgrade sprues too) and signifying collector's range/limited edition models in some fashion, most likely another colour (since, to my knowledge, such items have always been metal).

For models that have since been replaced/updated maybe I could put them in italics, or add something (e.g. [X]) to show that, what would people think?

And prices at time of release I also might look into, but that'd be quite a substantial update and I'll address it when I have more time available.
