View Full Version : A lot of dirt and battle damage - Hagen's Blood Angels

Hagen92

Hi all,
I知 new here, but I want to show my rising Blood Angels army. I知 rather painter than player, but because of lack of time, and lots of LotR miniatures waiting for painting, Blood Angels are progressing veeery slowly.

My target armylist for now is:
1250:
HQ
Recclussiach (meltabombs, meltapistol) 150
Elites
Sanguinary Priest (jump pack) 75
Sanguinary Priest 50
Troops
Death Company (7) (power fist) 165
+ Rhino 35

Assault Squad (10) (power fist, 2x meltagun) 235

Assault Squad (power fist, meltagun) 135
+Razorback 20
Assault Squad (power fist, meltagun) 135
+Razorback 20

Heavy Support
Devastator Squad (2x missile launcher) 110
Devastator Squad (2x plasma cannon) 120

Next, I値l buy some tanks (Predators, Baal Predators, Land Rider), Furioso Dreadnought, and Terminators (from new Space Hulk).

OK, so now it's time for some pics of my army:

That's my first BA - a test mini.

Group shot of all (quality isn't good, I know - I'll try do better pic on Tuesday, when I'll get my camera back)

Forgive me, if i'll make some grammatical mistakes - it's my first attempt for English-language forum :P

Any comments welcome!

Nice work Hagen, I especially like the OSL around the eyes and the battle damage!

Definately going to be following your progress!

Absolutely superb - a great and simple Chaplain conversion too...

24-10-2010, 23:06
Incredible start! I love how your test model is better than I can do when I try. Don't worry about your English, I get what you're saying and in any event the pictures speak louder anyway. Great stuff, looking forward to more.

Hadriel Caine
25-10-2010, 08:29
beautiful, realistic painting. love the chappie conversion. was it easy to do?

Hagen92
25-10-2010, 16:36
Heh, thanks guys ;)

Tomorrow, I should add pics of Heavy Plasma gunner - I have to finish some details and do some good photos.
Next in line is Assault Squad Sergeant with Power Fist, without JP ;]

As you can see, I paint minis very chaocically - one by one rather than Squads, so group photos will be rarity :D

@Hadriel Caine
The only difficult thing, was to remove this collar and helmet - Dremel was really helpful!

sartarius
25-10-2010, 18:20
your models are pretty damn good :), your chaplin looks amazing how did you paint the skin?

Hadriel Caine
25-10-2010, 20:05
dremel eh? really need to get one of them...

Kenzaburo
25-10-2010, 20:51
beautiful painting going on in here. gotta check here more often. :)

but, uhm, by doing each marine as a stand alone and with that kind of painting standard - uhm, won't your army take ages? not criticizing at all, because i'm a slowa$$ painter myself. :) but if i were to do that level of painting one at a time instead of small assembly lines i'd never get anything done. :D

eltanko
25-10-2010, 23:47
Really good stuff. I agree that the OSL on the eyes is very nice and they look good and gritty! Neat chaplain conversion too.

Dremel :) . Or good file and incredibly lot of patience :D

uhm, won't your army take ages? not criticizing at all, because i'm a slowa$$ painter myself
Yes, you're right :) . But now, I paint everything by hands - including basecoat and prime colours... it's about 60% of the time needed to paint the whole figure  . So and so I must spend much time for it, so I don't have to hurry up :) .
It's gonna change when I'll get an airbrush or spray primer.

26-10-2010, 17:56
Hey Hagen, really nice Blood Angels, I really like how you were able to add a realistic sense of dirt and grim without loosing the model and feel of shiny red marine. Do you use weathering powders for the dirt around the feet? Thanks for sharing!

Hagen92
26-10-2010, 18:17
Do you use weathering powders for the dirt around the feet?

Yes, I mixed it with a Graveyard Earth Citadel paint and use it for whole model, but mostly around the feet :)

Kenzaburo
26-10-2010, 22:18
ah, priming by hand - i'd never be able to do that. i'm a patient guy, really, i am, but priming with a brush, hells no!
but that certainly is doable, if you are able to paint in a more zen-like way, i guess. :)
i on the other hand would end up in a mental institute after doing 3 minis like that. :D

Hagen92
27-10-2010, 15:59
your models are pretty damn good :), your chaplin looks amazing how did you paint the skin?
I don't remember well, but I think that the base colour was Dwarf Flesh, highlighted to pure Elf Flesh, and next I applied a lot of Glazes - red, violet and bronze.

Kenzaburo - So now you know, why painting takes me so much time ;) .
But I'm not discouraged - I finished plazma gunner last night, and I'll add photos in the evening :) .

Great job but I'm not sure I like the white glow. I think it would look cool it it was "real" but most white glow I've seen looks a little off. Is there a reason you didn't go for a more green look?

Hagen92
28-10-2010, 14:33
Yes, I painted it really late at night :D .
I improved it yesterday - I'll add new photos few later :P

Cry of the Wind
28-10-2010, 22:48
I agree much much better that way! I wish you weren't so far away as I'd love to see these in person. Not many people in my neck of the woods that paint like that.

I would almost suggest making the fingers on the power fist glow just to see some more of your awesome OSL.

This guy is great, really has the gritty feel going on.

Hagen92
02-11-2010, 15:30
Noo, I don't like glowing PF's and my OSL isn't awesome (yet :P ) :)
But thanks ;)

Cry of the Wind
02-11-2010, 15:38
Haha, well it is better than mine, I haven't even tried as I'm scared I'll just wreck a nicely painted model.

Hagen92
02-11-2010, 18:18
Try on a metal mini, and if it won't looks good - you always can remove paint easily ;)
You can't say that you can't do something, if you didn't try :P

Brother Alexos
03-11-2010, 23:25
Nice. This army proves it's the little things that can really make a unit stand out. The small chips in the armour, the light spattering of brown towards his legs, it all makes this seem more real-like.

Hagen92
08-11-2010, 16:33

Lovely models - the OSL is nicely done and I like the battle damage. Just enough without overpowering the model.

10-11-2010, 19:29
These are beautiful. I love the dirty, gritty style marines you turn out. So much more evocative than the squeaky clean ones some people prefer.

10-11-2010, 21:46
@Dayspringer: Eee... No :P . He's Bort, not Bart ;)

Thanks guys, I'm very glad that you like my work :)

I'll add some group photos, as soon as I finish them :D

Toschenko
11-11-2010, 15:51
Very nice guys, I'm really digging the weathering - great take on the OSL effect, too. The only thing I'd strongly suggest would be to give Bort's parchment a little freehand, since as it stands now it looks like a towel :p

@Toschenko:
Yeah, I know, but I'll quote Cry of the Wind:
"I'm scared I'll just wreck a nicely painted model" ;)
I'm gonna paint something on every SM, when I'll get some skill :P

BTW, I painted some Marines last weekend and thus finished first Assault Squad, new photos tomorrow :) .
I found out new way to apply the base colour, now I can finish SM in one evening ;) .

Cry of the Wind
14-11-2010, 23:32
Haha too true, looking forward to the new stuff. I post a lot of updates but you post a lot of progress. What would you like to add to Bort if skill and confidence wasn't an issue?

Hagen92
15-11-2010, 20:11
I don't know, maybe some subtitles or BA insignia?
I'll try :P

Great looking unit dude! Although I have to ask, who is that devastator Ferros chap? He looks like he might have something clever up his sleeve!

16-11-2010, 08:21
I cant say I'm fond of all the Nazi stuff, I think an aquilla, blood angel chaper icon or grail tatoo would be much more effective.

I understand where your inspiration has come from, but you could make it more 40k orintated for a better affect.

Appart from that, I can't knock your work. Very solid.

I love the industrial bases & battle damage as this is a look I've gone for with my own army.

Keep up the good work mate

without sparking some political or cultural arguments, the swastika for the better part of human history has been a symbol of strength. only in the last half of the 20th century has it become a taboo reminder of a nations hatred and power of destruction... why should its former meaning be any less valid?

not that history should be any less remembered and respected, but power to you i say.

awesome painting and weathering, i'll admit the markings seem random and more suited for something runic, like space wolves, but still some vicious looking BA :D

Also the Nazi swastika is on its corner, while the ancient one is level, like the one on that guy's head. Still... SS?

16-11-2010, 14:20
Thanks for comments, guys :)

Yeah, I know meaning of swastika - for example it's slavonic symbol of sun and fire too ;) .
I wanted him to looks like typical nazi-skinhead, but I really have knowledge about this subculture, the political view and history.

@salvindogath:
He's Ferros, the Devastator :D . Member of my rising Devastator Squad, who is an example of Feel no Pain rule ;) .

I really like your Blood Angels Hagen! Your dirt and grime on the models is superb as is the power armor underneath and the bases really set everything off nicely. Keep up the good work, can't wait to see what's next.

Hi all!
The warseer was shut down for a while, but it doesn't mean I didn't paint anything ;)

I (almost) finished my Death Company with their Rhino transport last time:

A M A Z I N G !
One of the best Blood Angel armies I've ever seen.
The glowing eyes on the Death Company looks fantastic and very menacing.
Now I know this is asking a lot, but could you perhaps explain how you painted the DC-Rhino and the Death Company?
The highlights, weathering and all that good stuff :)

Hagen92
12-07-2011, 20:29
Thanks :)

It's quite simple:
On Chaos Black basecoat, I applied 1:1 Chaos Black and Codex Grey highlight at the edges. Then I followed it with pure Codex Grey.
Next, I created battle damage - using frayed sponge instead of brush i applied some Boltgun Metal and Mithril Silver.
At the end I added some dried mud on the boots and armour recess - for that I used a weathering powder mixed with some water.

Hope it was helpful :P

I honestly think you are the ultimate master of weathering, I have never seen such realistic weathering in my life, not even on my mothers 20 year old skoda! Absolutely perfect.

Hagen92

Thanks!
I applied heavily wattered down Blood Red first, around the eyes and on surfaces which could be lightened too. Then I apllied second layer, using blazing orange - same as Blood Red, but leaving some Blood Red visible under the coat. Next I added some Iyanden Darksun to Blazing Orange and painted only edges of armour which were nearest to the eyes. Eyes themselves were painted in the same way, but using white undercoat, brighter tones, and I put almost white dot in the middle (it suggest the light source).
You must only remember to use watered down paints and practise a lot.
I'm still learning how to achive the good effect, you must find your own way too.

My next work - second Razorback:

I painted it codex grey, next drybrushed using skull white. Then I applied some washes - badab black and gryphone sephia. When it dried I painted irregular black lines, and underline them using pure white.

Awesome painting, but the names on the bases are a big let down. The writing isnt nearly up to the quality of the rest of the miniatures.

Glowing eyes and I didn't see it before?...

Well your whole stuff looks incredible. The OSL works fine, espescially in case of the Death Company. I also like the Librarians sword, coppery red seems a ncie alternative to the GK-related blue forceweapons.
Also a compliment to the skintone, very clean and convincing.

Maybe two ideas (no idea if already mentioned or done yet):

It looks quite strange to me having "monocoloured" (in terms of fleshtones) armies.
Maybe, you could try to diverse the fleshtone beneath your marines? You have the skillz for it, bet on it;).

the other thing is the OSL of some former posts, they look darker, less shiy than the current ones. But maybe you updated those guys yet and the not-reading-through-all-posts-before bears fruit in my disgrace...:o:D

Even if you ignore my ideas, it's still an army you can be proud of!

Thanks a lot for comments.

@DeSnifter: Yeah, I know, but I'm a bit too lazy to spent more time on letters and improve them and almost whole army is already named, so I don't wan't to left some guys anonymous ;) . Maybe when them all will be done I'll change this, now I want to paint as many figures as possible till end of September :D

@harlekin: Thanks for constructive comment.
I don't like "policoulored" marines, it's not about racial valuation, but fluff says that all Marines looks very similar to their primarch :D . Sanguinius was pale blond so you know...

My OSL is still evolving, you're right, I painted eyes darker before. But I have no exact recipe to them, I mix paints a bit differently for every Marine. I know it's not very good, but I don't care about every single mini now, effect of full army is much more important to me.

You've really captured the coolest things about 40k in your work. Dynamic poses - toxic landscapes and terrific, embattled minis. It reminds me so much of that nostalgic 2nd edition artwork - except you've turned it up to 11!

I salute you!

I usually hate glowing eyes on marines, but my god those terminators! They look spot on. They look like they're actually glowing in real life. Such good work, as usual.
