Greetings all,

I present for your enjoyment a showcase of my old school Chaos army... The intention being that this will inspire me to finish painting those last few units to call it 'complete'! More than likely however, I'll just continue to feed my addiction for ancient Chaos Space Marines and update it as and when!

Now, I certainly don't claim to be the best painter around (I'm faaar too lazy), but hopefully you'll enjoy them. The army was initially a Death Guard army, but as you'll see I'm adding a few additional followers of other gods.

So without further ado, here is what I have so far....

Full army shot

Daemon Prince Vomikron Noxis

Daemon Prince Mutander Bubonicus

Summoned Greater Daemon Slumpscha

Termicide Squad

More to follow...

Vomikron Noxis

Plague Marine Squad: Black Death (this squad has since changed a little, updated photos to follow...)

Plague Marine Squad: Red Pox

Plague Marine Squad: Yellow Fever

More to come....

Obliterators 1

Obliterators 2

Nurgling infested objectives

Well that's the lot for now, I hope you enjoy. In the pipeline, with WIP pics to follow very shortly are a bunch of vintage Khorne Berzerkers, a couple of updated pics of the Plague Marines, and a couple of RT-era Dreadnoughts.

Best stop typing and get painting then!

21-11-2010, 16:26
Old school awesomesauce! Makes me happy seeing those old Plague Marines again, not to mention that your Daemon Princes and GUO are absolutely stunning. The whole army goes together really well, one of those armies that it'd be a joy to battle whatever the outcome.

Looking forward to more,

Brother Alexos
21-11-2010, 17:15

If I ever did make a Nurgle force, it would have to have a giant base of nurglings as a unit. I mean like having 100 fantasy bases put together 10X10, and it covered in NURGLINGS!! Love those little buggers!

I like how your army looks, the old models really did protray a Serious yet unbelievableness that is Warhammer.

22-11-2010, 11:28
Very nice! One of the nurglings on one of the bases looks like an epic GUO. :D

23-11-2010, 01:26
Great stuff so far, what other units are you planning to make in the future?

Vomikron Noxis
25-11-2010, 00:00
Thanks for the kind words so far fellas, but keep em coming, I need the encouragement! I have for you fine gentlemen a very small update, but it is a sign of things to come....

I present to you my upcoming painting projects, 8 old school Berzerkers and 2 RT Dreadnoughts:

A couple of minor conversions on the Dreads, just altering the arms to have two DCCWs to minimize fire frenzies! Anyway, just a teaser as painting begins soon!

26-11-2010, 13:01
I sold most of my RT chaos stuff when I was broke as a bum a few years back. Seeing these old boys nearly brings a tear to my eye, so thanks for the memories! Nice paint jobs, and looking forward to seeing those dreads done. Chop chop now...

26-11-2010, 21:12
Great stuff here! I love the old school models (particularly those dreds), and your painting is very clean (in a Nurglish way, of course). The paint job on the Greater Daemon and the Daemon Prince are especially characterful. Wonderful work.

30-11-2010, 11:41
Amazing dreadnoughts! *drools*

Can't wait to see them painted!

12-12-2010, 07:31
Great to see some of the old guys getting some attention.

Vomikron Noxis
12-12-2010, 17:55
Thanks for the comments fellas! Painting has begun on the Berzerkers now, so WIP pics will follow soon...

19-12-2010, 01:57
Cat Dreadnoughts....great! Can't wait to see your skills with these.

Vomikron Noxis
03-01-2011, 23:49
Well it's not much of an update, but it's an update nonetheless! Here for your viewing pleasure are a couple of WIP shots of the first two Berzerkers...

Done except for basing and varnishing!

04-01-2011, 00:23
Nice stuff! I have always dug the old Chaos marines and think that they should get back to their roots regarding the chaos models.

04-01-2011, 05:56
The finish on your models is ace like the way youve aged it a bit and seeing a bone looking plague army is new for me as well.
Normally I see dark green or rotting flesh.

Like the way your berzerkers have turned out, sure would like to see some paint on those old school dreads

Vomikron Noxis
04-01-2011, 15:41
Cheers fellas! I wonder if you could help me with my dilemma actually... I'm wondering whether to paint the dreads in World Eaters colours, or in Death Guard colours (perhaps even one each...), what do you guys think?

05-01-2011, 13:25
I would paint the bodies death guard and make the shoulderplates world eater colours

Mr Feral
06-01-2011, 14:42
Personally, I would do one in Death Guard colours and one as a World Eater. Variation is always good after all.

Great log btw, the old miniatures were and still are rather characterful. :)

08-01-2011, 07:37
I would paint the bodies death guard and make the shoulderplates world eater colours

Considering the Death Guard went exclusively over to Nurgle I would say this is a very bad idea. All the loyalists, sans Garro, were killed at Istvaan. The Death Guard traitor fleet was stuck in the warp en route to terra until Mortarion gave himself and his entire legion over to grandfather Nurgle.

Seeing as the dreads have no ranged weaponry I would suggest Khorne. However, depending on the amount of Berzerkers you have it may look odd having two dreads and only one squad to go with them. Personally, I would do them Death Guard unless you have a sizable amount of Berzerkers to make it look proportionate army wise.

Then again I may have thought entirely too much about this and just do what looks cool. One of each would allow you to have fun with two schemes and will keep the painting interesting for you.

09-01-2011, 04:44
How have I not looked on here before?

Always had an appreciation for the old school, and you've done it justice here. The Khornate renegade models are particularly striking with the red and brass. I try and balance any praise with constructive criticism but I just can't with these models. These models are pretty much spot on. Nicely done.

With regards,

Vomikron Noxis

Thanks again for the replies guys! Unfortunately I've had some pretty serious problems at home that took precedence over painting, but I've been back on it this week... Not much of an update, but here are a couple more old school Berzerkers for your enjoyment!

Up next, I'll be finishing the bases on the first four Berzerkers, and then finally getting some paint on the first Dread! (fyi, I decided to paint them both in World Eaters colours, and use the opportunity to build a World Eaters force to fight alongside my Death Guard!). In the not too distant future, I'll be adding more Berzerkers, Terminators (old school of course) and a very special project: refurbishing a Mk I Land Raider! Exciting times!

Vomikron Noxis
23-01-2011, 22:55
Well, despite the woeful lack of interest in my last update... I hereby present you with a finished pic of the first 4 marines in the army! Enjoy!

Painting has now commenced on the first Dread, so pics will follow in the not-too-distant future...

23-01-2011, 23:06
Woeful lack of interest was totally undeserved and probably due to some freak warp anomaly! The Berzerkers look great, and are so full of nostalgia awesomeness that I'd cry if I wasn't too tired. The blood effects look good as well, but you might consider adding some darker spots just to separate them from the armour colour.

Vomikron Noxis
23-01-2011, 23:10
Haha yes I'd like to think that's what caused it! Totally agreed on the blood actually, might have to add an extra layer with a little spot of black ink in there just to make it a little darker and more gruesome, but very pleased on the whole!

24-01-2011, 02:47

Great work but I actually didn’t notice the blood until I saw BeatTheBeat’s comment, darkening it a bit would be a good option.

It’s interesting to see the evolution in their style too.

24-01-2011, 18:02
Don't watch the lack of replies in mid-January, people are running on vapours after xmas:p Anyways these new additions are nice, I think you could add further highlights on the corners of the armour etc.

31-01-2011, 19:24
Greetings from the warp! I have finally got round to doing a spot of painting, and I present for your enjoyment a WIP pic of my first Dreadnought! The base hasn't been started, and there are a few details that need adding to the Dread, but you can see more or less what he'll be like finished (hopefully in a couple days' time). So without further ado, pics!

Edit 2: Pics finally working! Enjoy...

Those old Berzerkers are simply oozing with style - kudos on the paintjob too!

Looking forward to the Dread as well. :)

03-02-2011, 11:57
Those berserkers look awesome! Just so... red! One suggestion though: remove the ruins from the dreadnoughts base. It covers too much of the model.

03-02-2011, 15:01
Love the old-school chaos vibe. And seeing it applied to the dread... simply awesome!

Vomikron Noxis
06-02-2011, 18:57
Greetings all! Time for a long overdue update... the Dreadnought is finished!! Let me know what you think...

I agree that the ruin is slightly too big and a little obstructive, but it's not as bad IRL, and it's too late to change now ;)

06-02-2011, 21:58
That dreadnought is really sweet! I like it! How did you apply the dip? W a brush?

Vomikron Noxis
06-02-2011, 22:55
Cheers! Yep all the dipping is done with a large brush, then followed by a matt varnish and blood effects. More time-consuming than dipping the conventional way I suppose, but gives much nicer results!

06-02-2011, 23:49
The dreadnought turned out wonderful! As you said, the ruin might be a bit too big, but didn't really think about it until you said it so it can't be that bad. Now stop this nostalgia madness before I have to kill my economy by buying old toys on ebay... (no, seriously, don't stop.)

Greetings all,

Got a little update for you tonight, with a few more to follow soon! No painting this time I'm afraid, but a sneak peek at a Terminator squad I'm working on atm. More old school goodness!

Edit: Check out the guy on the far left, would you believe that's actually a heavy flamer he's carrying? Look how tiny it is! How cute...

11-02-2011, 13:06
Dreadie looks great! Looking forward to seeing the termies painted.

12-02-2011, 19:12
The Cat-Dreadnought = win!
I'm also liking the older Termies as well...brings back fond memories. That heavy flamer always reminded me (a bit) of the original space hulk heavy flamer too.
Keep up the great work.

Greetings all,

Just a very brief update this morning, I've finished two more Berzerkers, only two more until I finally have a full squad! Enjoy.

Next on the agenda are the last two Berzerkers for this squad, then the 2nd Dread (hopefully both done before this time next week), and then the interesting stuff starts... got two Mk I Land Raiders to clean up and convert, plus a rag tag bunch of Khorne renegades to make up my next 2 Berzerker squads, plus those Terminators. Oh and Kharn and a DP to lead them! Busy Busy!

Vomikron Noxis
07-03-2011, 01:00
Greetings brothers!

Well it's been a while since I've updated, but I haven't been *completely* idle... Managed to finish a couple more berzerkers, as well as reorganise and assemble my first two squads to create a stronger theme and make them easier to recognise on the battlefield.

First up, two Berzerkers (one of which is a Skull Champion in my first squad):

Secondly, a WIP pic of my first squad, the War Hounds:

As you can see, to maintain a theme, they all are from the same era (early 90s) and have similar armour styles.

Next up, a WIP pic of my second squad, the Hellblades:

Again, to maintain the theme, these guys are from the very early period of Chaos (80s renegades), and they all have Bloodletter-style heads. The champion is a Fantasy model from the same era.

Lastly, a few pics to show you what will be coming up shortly, and the vast amount of work I have to do to make it a possibility... Here are a few pics of two MK I Land Raiders that I bought on eBay:

I hope that serves to illustrate the vast amount of work that they both require! Of course, I'll be posting WIP pics as I go along.

Let me know what you guys think!

Wow!, What a cool thred!!

Old skool models are awesome. I'm loving the beserkers and thinks it's great to see an original landy.

Fantastic work on the painting also!

Although those models are old, (some nearly 30 years!!!) they wouldn't look out of place against a more 'modern' army.

Well done sir. looking foward to see how the land raider turns out!

Greetings all,

A bit of an update for you, just to show you what I've been working on when life allows it...

First up, as requested over on B&C, I took some photos of my 2nd Dreadnought before and after dipping, just to highlight how fantastic Army Painter dip can be, and how little effort is required. So without further ado, pics:

Dreadnought before:

And after (still needs varnishing and blood effects):

And next up, I've started restoration work on the first Land Raider:

I've had to cover up the sides with plasticard as they were so damaged, and I've added Heavy Bolters to the hull, a new hatch on top, and what will become a brass figurehead from an old Bloodthirster. Still LOTS of work to do though... Comments are welcome!

Vomikron Noxis
21-03-2011, 20:39
Greetings all,

A brief update for your enjoyment...

First up, I finished off the second dreadnought:

And here are the two big fellas together:

More pics to follow in the next post (as I believe there is an annoying limit on images...)

Vomikron Noxis
21-03-2011, 20:42
Did a little more work on the LR too, added rivets to the plasticard on the hull:

And also started work on the lascannons, which are going to be in the style of the weird old sponsons:

That's all for now, more to follow soon. Comments welcome!!

22-03-2011, 02:55
Your Old school dreadies are simply awesome, and the berzerkers are sweet as.

You have convinced me to paint a whole heap of old school khorne berzerkers and use tham as Khorne affiliated Chosen Chaos Space Marines.

23-03-2011, 19:48
Fab thread! My own chaos army includes plenty of these old school models - and I love the dreads in particular. The dip methods works really well and I think particularly the bone looks good with the dip, offsetting the red. Excellent work! :)

Vomikron Noxis
24-03-2011, 01:54
Thanks for the comments guys! The Dreads in particular are some of my favourite models ever produced by GW, just so full of character.

And for your enjoyment, I have a brief update... Been working on the Land Raider a bit, it's not nearly finished yet, but it is getting there:

It's certainly starting to take shape, gotta add a few more details to the hull. As you can see, I've assembled one of the sponsons, in the style of the classic LR, with newer lascannons. You may or may not notice in the first pic that I have been painstakingly reconstructing the damaged tracks, not an easy task I can tell you! Anyway, work continues and another update will follow soon! Comments welcome as always :)

Vomikron Noxis
25-03-2011, 19:56
Greetings all,

Another brief update for you... I've finished reconditioning the first LR! Pics to follow for your perusal, if you can think of any other accoutrements that need to be added to gain the favour of the Blood God, please say so now! Btw, it still looks rougher than it will do when painted, due to the godawful old paint job on some of the bits, so do keep that in mind. Comments welcome, cheers!

Really great collection! As a collector of old chaos myself (although in WHFB instead) I salute you! This is coming perilously close to inspiring me into 40k chaos as well...

If you are open to constructive criticism, I must say that the devourer heads on the sponsons do not work for me personally. They still have too much Tyranid flavour, and don't say 'lascannon'. But that's the only little thing I can think of to criticise, everything is brilliant!

Thanks for your comments, vintage Chaos really is the best thing about GW for me, there's just so much flavour in every model.

And yep, constructive crit is always welcome! In terms of the devourer heads, I wanted something that had a bit of an organic/daemonic look (although they'll still be painted metallic), similar to the style of the weird old chaos weapons. I agree they might look a bit out of place now, but see how you feel after they have a decent paint job on them ;)

Pics to follow this week of the first squad of Berzerkers completely finished, and some PIP pics of the LR. Cheers all!

Greetings brothers!

Another little update for you... I've painted a few more Berzerkers, completing the first squad now, and taken a pic of everything I currently have completed (which looks like nothing, but there's a lot still WIP right now!). Work has begun on the LR, and it's looking soooo much better than before, so WIP (and perhaps even finished) pics will arrive later in the week.

For now however, feast your eyes on my warriors of the true gods:

By the gods, I have been lax in updating this blog recently, and I shall offer my own skull in penance! Or failing that, just do the first of several updates....

Firstly, thanks once again for the comments and interest brothers, it's very motivating!

Now on to the update:

Firstly, I started work on a Rhino for my Zerkers, restoring yet another crappy model from eBay. First 2 pics are how it came to me, and the second 2 are how it stands now (pre-painting). Let me know if you think it needs anything else...

And lastly (for tonight), some cool themed objective markers that I cobbled together:

Hope you like em! I'm gonna do another update tomorrow, as this isnt everything I've been working on, but you'll just have to wait to see the rest ;) I'll also post a few group pics of everything I've got currently, painted or otherwise!

Vomikron Noxis
24-05-2011, 00:42
Just one more quick update, in case anyone is interested in what I've been doing instead of updating this blog (among other things of course!):

Firstly, assembling a Magos Explorator for my Inquisitor Warband:

And secondly, I've been teaching my girlfriend how to paint, and tbh her first attempt utterly puts me to shame!

Apparently his name is Bert! Very proud of her efforts indeed, I am!

24-05-2011, 07:51
Looking good. Really nice explorator, and be sure to commend your gf on her effort!

24-05-2011, 08:16
Fantastic work. Is that a epic scale bloodthirster i spy and a plasma rifle used as a pistol on the magos?
What line is it from? It brings back fond memories. :)

Greetings all,

As promised, I have another update for you! It's not much, but two updates in as many days isn't bad....

First up, a Khorne Daemon Prince, possibly the ugliest model I've ever seen:

And secondly, everything I currently have painted:

And lastly, all of my old school World Eaters together (painted and unpainted):

That's all for now guys, best get back to painting....

@ MOMUS: Yep right on both counts! The Plasma Gun is from an old school Ork sprue that I had lying around.

24-05-2011, 19:42
I absolutely love this blog. It's a real nostalgia trip, but you're executing everything impeccably! Do you plan any Daemons? Great work - looking forward to seeing what you do with Mr Doghead :)

Continuing to be great work, VN! I can now see that the devourer pieces on the land raider do work, they actually remind me of the old school chaos missile launcher which had a somewhat organic muzzle. It'll be interesting to see if you can save that old blooodthirster model, it was a pretty dire sculpt.

Phew it's been a while since an update! Got some work done on the army though, so it's a quick update for now, and then another one in a couple days...

First up, I finished the Daemon Prince (aka stupid ugly dogface):

I think I've managed to improve him somewhat, but I'll let you guys be the judge of that! To follow soon, the rest of the Berzerkers!

Edit: I could do with some advice actually... Does the DP need blood effects on his axe, or does it look better without? I'll post a better picture of the axe for you to decide...

Edit 2: Here's a better pic of the axe, let me know what you think about blood effects or not:

I thinks these models are beautifull, awesome, fantastic!

Well done for creating such a unique 'blog'

Some people say the 'past is best left in the past', but I think GW should look at these rouge trader models and take note!!!

Again well done to the highest degree. It's making me look at buying some of my own!!!

Also, I did use to have one of those Khorne DP's that you have got there, but mine came with a big spike in his helmet and hes was sold and bought as a bloodthirster.

As for the axe, well all I can say is 'blood for the blood god!!!'

Aye that he was, good spot there! In fact the model used is actually the same one listed as Sapir Redwolf in those mighty tomes, although most of my Khorne warband is named after old characters from the Realms of Chaos.

Greetings brothers,

Just a brief update on this fine evening...

Had a bit of an eBay spending spree and put a 3rd Berzerker squad together:

The 'zerkers are all old WE assault troops, and the champion is put together from a bunch of different bits, including a bare arm from a real old school plastic Necromunda Goliath. Enjoy!

Superb kit bash on the 'zerker skull taker. Can't wait to see him with paint.
Thanks for the details on that drill bit. I'll def be on the lookout for one.

Greetings brothers!

Well I've not been able to get too much done on this army recently as I've been travelling a lot for work, and been a little preoccupied with my Daemons... I did manage to get 3 more objective markers finished though:

That's all for now!

29-07-2011, 18:40
These are the sweetness! Awesome stuff :D

Thanks for the replies so far, they always keep me motivated!

Another minor update for you (still working on my Daemons I'm afraid...). Got the last of my objective markers finished...

All of them together:

Enjoy, and please do comment!

14-08-2011, 15:56
First off your army is just awesome, so much nostalgia. I love the second bloodletter-zerker squad (the guy with snippy claws is awesome).
I owned some of the WE assault troop guys in your 3rd squad, didnt like those models though in comparison. Champ is a spot-on homage

Also, aren't your dreadnaughts lower torsos backwards? :D Looks fine (and stops the suggestive spikes from impaling their enemies)

No more plague marine love though?

Thanks for the comments brother, there's plenty more to come!

As for the dreadnoughts, technically speaking you're correct, although I've seen it done both ways and made the choice to assemble them the way I have to prevent the tail spike looking more... suggestive ;) Originally I had them assembled the other way round and it just didn't look right! Hopefully they look much better as they are!

On the subject of Plague Marines, there will be a revamp of my Nurgle stuff in the future, but probably not until the next codex arrives....

14-08-2011, 20:39
That is *such* cool stuff. Love the old minis, especially the Heroquest daemons! Damn fine painting too, nice and vibrant. These will surely pop off the table and still be menacingly evil.

15-08-2011, 00:20
Love the restorations on the Tanks, bravo! I'll sub to anything Rogue Trader era, but as a World Eater/Death Guard fan, this is a treat.

Keep it up!

You got anyhting else to spoil us with coming up?

Vomikron Noxis
17-08-2011, 17:38
Thanks for the replies brothers, it's great to know that so many people are still interested in old school models (after like 20 years they still rock)!

You got anyhting else to spoil us with coming up?

Well that would be telling wouldn't it ;) But that's ok, cos I am gonna tell! I'll be returning to this army properly very soon, as I've been distracted by my Daemons for a while....

Coming up will be the skull-faced Berzerker squad posted before, the Terminators (posted back near the start), Kharn the Betrayer, another restored Raider and Rhino, and a Khornified version of Abaddon... And that's just for starters!!

17-08-2011, 17:57
Wow awsome work with Vintage stuff making it still table worthy! Keep it up!

18-08-2011, 14:54
3 land raiders.. now I am jealous :D

Greetings brothers,

Well it has been quite some time since an update, but I'm now back working on my beloved World Eaters!

Fist up, got a few more Berzerkers finished:

And also been working on a certain unstoppable badass to lead them (still WIP):

Also made some headway on the restored rhino to cruise around in (still VERY WIP):

Lastly, a little teaser... My forthcoming Abaddon in World Eaters colours:

Enjoy, and let me know what you think!

Here is a little update for y'all to show you what I've been up to....

Vindicator WIP:

Still very much WIP, got about 40 more rivets to add... goody good!

Edit: A little pic of my faithful Flesh Hound too:

Cap'n Facebeard
29-09-2011, 00:56
Wow, the Hound actually looks really angry. Also, I never realised the Skull Throne would look so leather-upholstered and comfortable.

You've really gone to some length to keep the old school vibe on that vindi. Will it have a particular Chaos affiliation? Khornate ones always resonate well with the old Cannon of Khorne.

Vomikron Noxis
02-10-2011, 00:08

2 Zerkers

Custom champ fits in well, very menacing. Is his right arm made out of a mutation sprue arm? Something about his backpack makes it look huge, maybe its just the angle. Anyway, he's cool.

Yeh I was pleased with the kitbash for that one. It must just be the angle because the arms are old school, and therefore pretty small compared to a lot of today's stuff. The left arm (fist) is from the old SM weapons sprue and the right arm (pistol) is actually from the old Necromunda plastic Goliaths!

Cap'n Facebeard
14-10-2011, 09:40
I recognised the fist, it was the Goliath arm that threw me, nice usage! Actually I meant to the backpack itself looks huge as well, looming over his shoulders like that. I had thought that the right arm might've been converted from the mutation sprue tentacle arm at first, my bad!

I'm just thinking of making a 40K Khorne daemon army myself, with each unit of 'letters made of of a different era of their models, and old Realm of Chaos warriors as 'count as' Plaguebearers, the idea being they are the souls of dead Khorne warriors. Your work is darkly inspiring!

14-10-2011, 20:25
Really cool work here, its good to see the old models in good use, makes me wish the newer plastics were more like them (I think the closest we get to the 'organic armour' style chaos marines are the Possessed for now).

Vomikron Noxis

I think the closest we get to the 'organic armour' style chaos marines are the Possessed for now
Yeh the possessed armour is a kind of homage to the older organic styles, which is why I made use of it on the champ above. It's a shame that possessed are so pants in game though.... (although that may change in the next codex, fingers crossed)

I completely agree, and have used the possessed parts myself to smarten up my own chaos marine army. When I have some new paints I may start up a log of my own!

30-11-2011, 18:19

I'm not gonna do much more to the army for a while I think. There's not much more I can do with the current codex

Remember when I said this? I lied!

In an effort to make my beloved World Eaters more "competitive" (how I hate that word when applied to toy soldiers...), I'll be adding a few more bits in the coming weeks. First up are some slightly dodgy pics of my 2nd Daemon Prince and Rhino. The more observant among you may recognise the Rhino as what used to be my Vindicator.... I'm afraid it paid the price for being so rubbish in-game. Look out for some old-school Obliterators in WE colours in the near future too (guns in mouths!!)....

Cap'n Facebeard
30-11-2011, 21:20
Why must you turn Warseer into a house of lies?! Just kidding, I am glad it was lies!

That daemon prince looks great. I'll have to keep in mind that the oop bloodthirsters look really good with a headswap. I shall now be watching ebay for any that are missing heads going cheap. As to the vindi, I can only express sadness. Good models getting the chop for competitiveness is a woeful, woeful crime. That said, Rhino looks good.

*sigh* I know, I know. Sadly it's the reason my beautiful Dreads rarely see the battlefield :( Roll on the new codex hey??

And now (drumroll please!), it's time for an update.....

I've finished the 2nd Rhino:

Let me know what you think!

I've also been painting up a whole bunch of terrain (not Khorne-themed, but pretty cool nevertheless...), so I'll post some pics soon!

12-12-2011, 17:46
gosh I love those old chaos marines! I have a few of those you posted as well as one of those dreads. You give them some really great paint jobs as well! I like what you've done with your rhinos using the arcane ruins bits. Adding those makes the rhino look old school too.

Vomikron Noxis
15-12-2011, 00:10
Greetings brothers, it's update time!!

First up, some of the worst models GW have ever made (perhaps a bit harsh, they're not as bad as the old metal possessed...), but I'm rather fond of them...

Old school Obliterators (in WE colours of course):

1st squad:

2nd squad:

Guns in mouths ftw! These guys make up the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th old school Obliterators that I've painted... phew! Not that I'd ever use them all at once of course (well, up to nine of them anyway)....

And as promised, some of the terrain I've been working on:

Arcane Ruins:

Temple of Skulls 1:

Temple of Skulls 2:

You literally would not believe the amount of Devlan Mud I've used on all that terrain... An expensive way of doing it, but it's quick and dirty and gives a great effect.

That's all for now! I'm currently working on a Battlescape and the Khorne DP I posted before. Let me know what you think!

Vomikron Noxis
23-12-2011, 14:32

As well as looking really nice anyway, your log is a real 'trip down memory lane' for me, as I have -or had- almost all these models apart from the metal Khorne berserkers (bah, humbug!).

I really like the Blood Slaughterer; I was thinking the other day about trying to scratchbuild one of these (as I remember them from back in the day), but I couldn't recall really what it looked like.
I think I'll be updating it (e.g. giving it bigger shoulderpads and a bigger torso/back with a smaller helmet crest). Thank you for the reminders and the inspirations.

Those are some VERY nice looking reds VN. And an absolutely badass shoulder guard on 'Abaddon'. How did you sculpt that? I want to be able to do that too! :)

Thank you brother! The shoulder guard wasn't too tricky actually, but it took a bit of time. I filed down the old shoulder guard so it was nice and smooth, then sculpted the top row of teeth from green stuff (not really difficult, but very fiddly!). I left that to dry and then did the same with the bottom row. Once they were both dry, I flattened out some thin strips and smoothed them over the teeth to make the gums (making sure it was pushed into the recesses between the teeth). Once it was all dry I went over it with a file to smooth it out where there were any bits I wasnt happy with and used a bit of liquid green stuff just to tidy it up. Took a long time and was very fiddly, but not too bad in the long run. My advice would be to just give it a shot! Don't worry if you cock it up either, as you can always scrap it and start again (this is my third attempt, including the aborted Khorne symbol that I just couldn't get to look right!).

Evening chaps,

Not really an update as such, but I was just sorting out a few models and thought I'd give you a look-see at my "still-to-be-painted" Legionnaires...

(The terrifying thing is that this isn't even the complete collection...)

A quick description, from the top:

In the bags (top left) are old school Noise Marines, and top right are a couple of old Nurgle guys (the one in the bag is the Palanquin-riding Meltagun wielder)
Next row are a bunch of Slaanesh renegades.
Next row down are a bunch of Tzeentch renegades and disc riders.
Third row down are a variety of Khorne renegades/World Eaters/Chaos Champions.
The penultimate row are a bunch of generic renegades, including a Meltagunner and Power Fist.
And the final row... Chaos Squats!!

I literally cannot wait for 6th edition and the new Chaos Codex so that I can make use of all these guys (and more)!!

Nice stuff that's the last guy im missing from completing my own Death Guard Army full of Classic Renegades and Plague Marines just have not been able to win a decent auction for the Palanquin-riding Nurgle Renegade :( ....ill trade ya a few classic rhino hulls for him :)

Good evening to you brothers!

I have the smallest of updates for you (so don't get too excited)....

With the advent of 6th edition, I decided to paint up another objective marker for the World Eaters (given that sometimes you will need 6 primary objectives, and I only had 5):

That's right, it's a lovely warm bowl o blood! I like to think of my troops anointing themselves in the blood of a powerful daemon or champion to gain their prowess.

That's it for now I'm afraid... I'm eagerly awaiting the new codex so that I can expand the army to Apocalyptic proportions!

28-07-2012, 21:42
Great puddle effect, looks totally realistic with a nice Daiblo 2 vibe. I like it a lot!

Khorne enjoys a nice bowl of Borscht as much as the next transdimensional monster god :)

(Nice objective)

Hail brothers! Another quick update for you (I'm STILL waiting for the new codex before I do anything too serious)... I did another objective for my WE, since I have commandeered the Bloodthirster statue for my Daemons... Now I've replaced it with a statue of our beloved Primarch, who freed us from the shackles of the false Emperor...

Let me know what you think!

Nice bronze colour

This thread keeps inspiring me to get on with scratchbuilding my own Chaos "Cat-Dreadnought". Many thanks for the old-school step back in time.

Well, not really an update today, but check out what landed on my doorstep this morning:

Finally this unholy tome is mine!! And for a much better price than the £70+ you see on eBay ;)

11-09-2012, 20:11
If you've not got one, get hold of Lost and the Damned as well, really worthwhile. Including stuff like create your own daemons, chaos champions narratives and glyphs for the chaos language...translating the words in the pictures is loads of fun!

12-09-2012, 00:03
Now that's a sweet book.

Congratulations indeed!

Superb old school goodness. Excellent work!

Now I'm totally jealous. :)

:) Thanks chaps, it's such a wonderful tome, oozing with Chaos! Now all I need is the 2nd book, the Lost and the Damned...

Hail brothers!

Well you'd be forgiven for thinking that I'd forgotten about this army, but that certainly isn't the case! With the new codex in my (daemonic) possession, you'll be seeing a lot more activity from me over the coming months! Just to prove it, I have a little taster for you:

Yup, that's a whole bunch of renegades on my painting table (and that isn't even all of them)... I sure have my work cut out for me!

29-11-2012, 03:25
Oh dear lord. A Chaos squat.

29-11-2012, 07:11
great collection and skills

those old models have some kind of magic inside

Greetings brothers! Well progress on this army has been painfully slow recently, but I do have something of an update for you... The new codex basically invalidated a lot of my previous choices (boo), but did give me a whole bunch of new ones (yay)! The first of these is my new Chaos Lord, Ardenor Crush (a cookie if you know where that name is from...):

Yup that's right, he's riding a super old school Jugger. That thing in his left hand is a relic from a very distant time (Slaves to Darkness) known as a "Spawngoad". It's essentially a very pointy stick used to make spawn go where you want them to! The reason for that will become apparent right about now...

The first three (of five) in my Chaos Spawn unit. The idea behind them is that they are a bunch of creatures (rare xenos, chaos creatures) from the World Eater fighting pits, unleashed and goaded into battle...

Let me know what you think!

19-12-2012, 17:27
i've got that zoat! but mine isn't converted. it still has its weird tyranid-like pistol.
Will be interesting to see how you paint them!

Isn't Ardenor Crush a bad guy from a D&D setting? The name does ring a bell.
This Ardenor looks pretty badass, and I dig the idea of the gladatorial monsters, it suits the WE fluff. Is the other OOP Scyla model in the unit as well?

Vomikron Noxis
21-12-2012, 18:23
Spot on! He's the creepy smart Hobgoblin that leads the Chill.

I was going to include the very old OOP Scyla, but he's pretty tiny compared to the rest of the spawn, boo! It raises an interesting problem though, any advice on what I should include for the final spawn of the group? I've got the three you see above, plus an Ambull on the way, but I'm still stuck for the 5th one!

21-12-2012, 21:27
Good question brother! It needs to be something good since you already have such a great and varied line-up.

I`ll think on it and let you know if I figure something out :)

Spot on!

I'll expect my cookie in the mail.

what I should include for the final spawn of the group?

I love decisions like this. A dragon ogre? A metal rat ogre with a head swap? An oop tyranid with controlling implants, maybe an epic biotitan (prob too big)? An oop ogre or ogryn, such as Blood Bowl's Morg n' Thorg? There is also stacks of Reaper minis that would fit into that unit very nicely.

Red Skullz
22-12-2012, 07:58
Ooo, +1 for dragon ogre!

23-12-2012, 21:57
That Khorne lord is epic! Love these old style berzerkers, they are soo much better than the goofy plastic ones.

Vomikron Noxis
24-12-2012, 01:51
Thank you brothers! On the subject of the spawn, I rather like the idea of the dragon ogre (although I'd have to 40k him up a bit...), but I also had in mind this guy: http://www.solegends.com/citc/c23mutantogre.htm. They're damn pricey on eBay, but if I was hoping for a cheap army, I wouldn't have chosen this one!

Also, I need a unit of 10 cultists... any thoughts on what to use for them? I've got a bunch of Necromunda models that I could rustle up as a ragged band of degenerates, but I reeeally love the DV plastics... Thoughts?

Red Skullz
24-12-2012, 06:48
If you can get hold of that old mini, go for it! But either way I think that the Dragon Ogre is a perfect fit so maybe do him just the same?

As for cultists I'd say primo Necromunda supplied with some choice Fantasy miniatures in the same era.

Oh, and Merry Christmas brother :D

Cap'n Facebeard
24-12-2012, 20:57
I'm in the same boat for cultists, I really think the DV guys will look too out of scale next to my OOP zerkers and CSM.
I was thinking of converting some Hobbit Goblins, as apparently they are quite small.
If I was a millionaire, I'd buy a bunch of Chaos Thugs off eBay and convert them :D

24-12-2012, 21:33
@ Cap'n Facebeard: I'm not sure how big the Goblins for The Hobbit are (i.e. if they got changed for the new game), but the regular armoured ones for the Lord of the rings game are tiny. To my eyes, they're about 50% the size of regular WFB infantry.

@ VN: For Cultists, how about WFB Skaven? They're cheap £, and their stooped/hunched-over profile not only means that they are smaller, but also gives them a more 'abused menial/meat-shield' look to them. Plus, you could GS hoods over them if you don't want them to appear too 'ratty'-looking.

Vomikron Noxis
24-12-2012, 23:22
Thanks for the thoughts on the cultists brothers! I've managed to track down that ogre mutant on eBay and snapped it right up (not cheap mind you!), so look out for that in the future.

I'm also considering adding some Necron allies to my force, for quality flyers and ranged anti-tank, so I've also managed to get hold of some of the frankly horrid 2nd ed Necrons, plus some long OOP Chaos Androids from Space Crusade... Not sure if I'm gonna make use of them yet, the new CSM codex is giving me a bit of a headache when it comes to making a list :S

On a lighter note, Merry Christmas one and all (and thank you brother Red!)

Hail brothers! Got a small update for you this evening. Got the two remaining spawn assembled and undercoated, and here they are all together:

What do you think? The army is progressing at a painfully slow rate, but you can blame my daemons and the fact that I've actually been playing (and indeed winning!) some games :)

Winning? You can't win with Worldeaters! [/internetz know-wotz]

Had to chime in to express my love for that Ambull, he looks badass. How much money does that unit represent (no, second thought, don't tell me).

I just stumbled across this blog.... always good to see old (and some ancient!) models getting quality attention. Keep up the good work.

Hail brothers!

Breaking news: I'm selling the army!!

Well now that I have your attention, that isn't strictly true... but I am selling a lot of the stuff I don't use these days. Check out my eBay listings if you're interested (got a bunch of other GW bits on there too), I'd really like it to go to a good home :)

Listings are here (http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/zombie_thirteen/m.html?item=330855383008&ssPageName=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562)

Don't worry though, I'm not quitting the hobby (in fact I'm getting back into it in a much bigger way than before) and I'm still continuing with this blog. Just clearing some space for when I move later in the year!

Hail brothers!

Soooo.... With the new Chaos Codex I'm restarting my old (very old) Death Guard army. As a result of that, I wont be updating this blog for a while...

It's not all bad though, check out my new thread (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?362949-Back-to-the-Old-Skool-VN-s-Death-Guard&p=6603501#post6603501) for more old school awesomeness!!
