I found an old timeline (which mentions things like Squats, and why they hate orks & distrusts eldar) of the 40k universe. In it I also found something interesting: in the year 011/m02 (also known as 2011), the second epoch will start. So what is this second epoch?

Is 011/M02 not 1011?

0 - 999 = 1st millenium
1000 - 1999 = 2nd millenium
2000 - 2999 = 3rd millenium
etc.

A direct quote from the timeline:

2,011 (011/m02): beginning of second epoch
So either the creators of the timeline were confused, or this is how it is supposed to be. Considering the track record of these things, confusion seem to be more likely ;) This is the only date in the time line that contains both our way of typing out years and the way that is commonly used in 40k. The timeline also states that the terraforming of mars will take place in 100/m02, so they are at least consistent in using m02 as this millennia.

It's obviously the year the Emperor, disguised as the first ever non-white president of the biggest power at the time, brings to Terra the gifts of affordable clean energy and truly universal healthcare, setting the stage for the eventual advancement of humanity into the Dark Age of Technology (and Socialism, but historians always leave that part out).

We'll know soon enough I guess, no need to spoil the fun :shifty:

Where did you find this timeline? Sounds awfully like fanon, since I don't recall the official material mentioning anything that happens between 7,000 BC and about AD 15,000.

As a general rule, the answer to the question "what is <obscure one-line reference> about?" is "who knows?", 90% of the time. :)

I really should have given my source. Silly me for not thinking about it ;)
It is from the Final liberation manual (page 75, for those who are interested) , but it would surprise me if they simply created a timeline out of thin air, so they probably got it from GW, which would mean that this is probably fluff from 96 or 97 (the game was released in 97). The manual also mentions the warp being discovered in m03.

The "Second Epoch" is probably something along the lines of developing space flight. There's various SF universes with a new "year zero", typically using 1945 (the atomic bomb), 1957 (Sputnik), 1969 (landing on the moon) or something fictional in the future as a new epoch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epoch_%28reference_date%29). Brave New World used the birth of Henry Ford, for example.

It could be as simple as implying that the "xxx.MXX" date system was introduced in 2011.

Usually when people say that it is the end of an epoch/the start of an epoch, it signifies some important event. It surprises me that this is simply thrown in there, with no explanation, and that no-one seem to know what it is all about. Even when it comes to old fluff, there is usually someone around who knows what it is about.

The reason no-one knows what it's about is that it's about nothing. Like I said, it's never been referenced anywhere else. From an out-of-universe perspective, it's only there to connect the AD xxxx and xxx.MXX dating systems.

It would be 2011. No calendar i have ever heard of has a year Zero. Zero being a concept and you would not say this is year none.

So what is this second epoch?

Why it's the epoch in between the first epoch and the third epoch of course.

There are a few (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_zero). Most famously, of course, Cambodia under Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge.
