View Full Version : rorulmesp's WIP log

So it's Black Friday, and to celebrate, I have decided to finally start a WIP log.

I've been working on some Orcs and Goblins for the Tale of Fantasy Painters, which has been very helpful in providing me with the incentive to follow through with painting a whole army, rather than just the bits and pieces that I've tackled previously.

Here is a picture of the WAAAGH! as it stands, nearly 3 months in to the Tale. Just some basing left to do on this month's additions, grouped on the right.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/waaagh3.jpg

Notes:
There are 9 horrible dipped orcs beefing up the finished unit to 20, I consider them placeholders for the ones painted for this month, and they will eventually be stripped and repainted. Thankfully they are really fuzzy in the above picture.

Soon to come: Individual pics. : )

How do you do your skin color? I would love a recepie.

Thanks;

a better group shot including boar boyz that I am not all the way done with
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/armymonth3.jpg

@_dandaman_: Recipe for the orc's skin is a base of Vallejo Model Color Russian uniform WWII, shade-washed with what would most likely be close to GW's Thraka green wash, highlighted with the russian uniform green again adding a bit of Vallejo "pale sand".
Goblins are painted the same but substituting GW Gretchin green for the russian uniform color.
Sometimes i will wash their faces with watered-down devlan mud for more depth.

Here is an old orc BSB which I altered, basecoated, and then stowed away a couple of years ago. If he's squinting, it's because of the daylight.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/orcbsb.jpg

Also the orc warboss I'm building for the Tale, still at an early stage.

Solid painting, I really like the squigs. And the orcs look appraisingly downtoned, is this due to dipping? Does that even work on green?

rorulmesp
30-11-2010, 20:35
Thanks : ) The orcs aren't dipped... I have dipped orcs before and they came out looking... "O.K." but horrible next to the properly washed ones.

This is a very cool army mate and the more often I look at it, the more i like it!
The WIP boss looks promising so far, I'm curious how he will turn out in the end. :)

Finished boar boyz for the tale

Well! Hello everyone. Thanks for all the encouraging comments!

@ Indreth: Thanks! Me too.
@ Malenky : : ) Thanks a lot.
@ mdiscala : Thanks, and yes. : ) pictures soon.
@Monsterzonk : Thanks! I have to go back now and redo the metals to match the boar boys... Hehe.
@ Pumpavius : Squig skin is a base of Astronomican Gray, shaded with Scab Red and then highlighted back up to the Gray and white. The lighter jumping squig was painted slightly differently, as a test.
@ Daniel36 : Thanks mate.
@ azhagmorglum : Thanks : ) I have a couple more conversions of those old Brian Nelson orcs to show off, I'll post some pictures later today if I get to it. They are also only basecoated... : /

I am just wading into a great big swarm of night goblins for the tale... can't put them off any longer! I have them all magnetized now finally and have applied the first coat of color to their robes... messy. I was considering making a log post of each step or few steps, but I don't know if that would be excessive. I think if anything it would really help me keep moving on them. I'll post a photo later tonight. Cheers and thanks again for the great comments!

Wow, I just love everything I've seen. The gritty colour scheme like Daniel36 mentioned, and also absolutely brilliant conversions.
I'm itching to do that BSB conversion now too someday when I pick up my Orcs again. Great way to put the old boar boyz to use, eh. :)

I also really, really like how you painted that stone troll.

Now that I am home from work and snapped a few appalling pictures, it is time for another retro-update!

First, the night goblin mob I'm working on... 50 high-pitched nasal git-voices with cockney accents, yowling for more paint. They just want an excuse to stab me more with their pointy spears.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/goblins1.jpg

Also here is a shaman that I meddled with and basecoated, who will be painted up properly for the tale eventually
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/shaman.jpg

...and a former standard bearer who has been given new hands and a great weapon.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/orx.jpg

@ defunct : Thanks : ) Now that you mention putting the old boar boyz to use, I think it would be awesome to see (or make) some conversions using old metal orc bodies mounted on the snazzy new boars... hrmmm.... as for the troll I just wanted him not to be blue hehe.

Cheers!

That would be cool to see... do it! Good luck getting them to rank up though, mate. My unpainted second rank is just 5 boars about to get kicked in the face so far. Hehehe.

Thanks for the pics of the old brian nelson's minis. They are very characterful, shame they are not the same size as the plastic orcs. Can't wait to see more

Of course, for that problem I have hatched a plan. The whole front rank will be nostalgia, and I'll put the plastic boyz behind them where they will just look like a sea of teeth and weapons. Here's a picture...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/frontrank.jpg

I have had a few more sessions with the night goblin horde and they are looking slightly more developed (still sloppy though, the clean-up will come later, and then washes and final details). I'm posting a picture here not so much to impress anyone but to document my progress for myself, and remind myself to keep going. I am developing a technique... more of a ritual, perhaps, of summoning the spirit of Harry when I go to do a step on all of these blighters. The key element of this ritual involves looking at Harry's thread (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87490), and sacrificial pie.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/goblins3.jpg

I have one more thing to show you fine fellows tonight, It is something that I've been working on, sporadically, for the past few years. Just recently I have been inspired to have a good decisive crack at it, and perhaps this time I will finally find the motivation to finish and paint the barstid up. Here is a conglomeration picture of the progress I've done on it in the last few days.

the bloatlord

I'd say : focus on the greenskins ^^

I am beginning to get into a good rhythm with this stuff which prevents me from getting bored of one thing... it goes:

-lump some putty on the fat bloke, general shapes,
-paint a color on all 50 gobbos (well it's 49 technically),
-do a layer on a (2D) painting I'm working on for a friend,
-then back to the putty for details, as it has hardened up a bit,
-steps 2 and 3,
-final fine details on the bloatlord before the putty gets too firm to manipulate
-beer

That pretty much satisfies all aspects of my hobby hunger... so the goblins don't get to take over my sanity and puncture it with their million pointy sticks, but they still get regular intervals of attention and progress.

azhagmorglum

I have a couple updates tonight of Orcs & Goblin-related things I've been working on. Here are the pics.

First of all my goblins are coming along, having just received a green wash to their skin and now needing only the mudwash over the rest of the model, details, and basing. And work on their shields.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/gobbos.jpg

Also here is a black orc boss / bigboss
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/Gorgrum.jpg

And another shot which shows some progress on my boar boss here.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/krug.jpg

still a lot to do on this guy but I think he is on his way there. The boar's hind feet are sort of goofy in this picture. I sculpted them and then realized that they were super-short compared to the other boars' legs. hehe.

Cheers everyone, thanks for looking.

Azhag: It's just regular cheap ol' gray primer, touch 'n' tone I think the brand is. I have experienced some trouble with it in the past and recommend dropping some more bucks on better primer though to be honest.

King Thor: thanks : ) More on the way soon... hopefully. I got a giant, gonna give him a big nasty beard. Right now it just looks like he has nachos attached to his chin.

More pictures to come. That antler's shape is kind of hard to see in any of the ones I just took and I am keen to get it undercoated so we can see the shapes only, and not the different materials.

Yes, I wouldn't mind seeing him finished. He's shaping up to be a real grade A badass. The Greenskins are also really nice. Your painting is extremely crisp.

Thanks, Mr. Chair. I like to think that he would be extra-bad due to the rot, we'll see how that comes out in the paint.

Hey guys, here's what I have been working on lately.

finished up some gobbos for the tale
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/month5gobz.jpg

Now that the standard bearers are done, I couldn't resist heaping them all together, including their ballistic accomplices and 8-base unit filler, for a gobbo group shot.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/allthegobboz.jpg

Apart from O&G I have been tinkering with the bloatlord a bit... I made him something to stand on, and gave his skin some foundation color. I am really torn between wanting to paint him myself and wanting to cut him apart and see other people's versions too. I just don't know that much about the casting and whether it would be possible with such a wild shape as the antler... I can see that the rest would probably be simple enough. Anyone have ideas about this?

anyway
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/bloatbase.jpg

lastly here are a couple experiments I did on some old brett horses... of course, in real life the color is different and that's the point of the experiments, but hey. They each have probably more individual layers of paint than I have ever put on any part of a model... I am really trying to practice the glazing and soft highlighting in preparation for the chubby chap.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/rorulmesp/orcs%20and%20goblins/horsetests.jpg

If any of you have any color recipes jump into your head after looking at a particular part of the bloatlord, please let me know. I am definitely going to take my time here and get the colors figured out before any more paint goes on.

You could hint to their allegiance, give the Khorne one some bloodstains, Slaanesh pale but perfect skin, and the third guy is just a skull anyway (if you go from right to left). The Bloatlord probably took the herald of Nurgle's rival out first. :)
Amazing sculpt btw!

Kind of threadomancy, but I've remembered your orcs lately and I was wondering how you altered the old metal boarboy to make it a foot soldier (cutting, pinning, greesnstuffing etc...). Thanks
