View Full Version : The Dwarfs of....pfft....i dunno, somewhere...(Army Blog)

16-03-2006, 12:01

This is a project log of my endeavor to build (and game with) a Dwarf army, painting it to a reasonable tabletop standard. This will be my first Warhammer army (well fourth, but the other three don't count :)) so im keeping this log to keep me on track and to help to stay focused.

Instead of buying the battalion box (which is hardly the worlds greatest deal) I bought a box of warriors from eBay for 16 (it's a small saving but still) and i've been working on them for the last two weeks, and here is what my painting space is looking like...

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/9097/p31600238sh.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

1) This is the unit all assembled and primed in black.
2) The three that i am currently working on.
3) My scary amount of paints (at least it is when i work out how much i spent on them!
4) Brushes, most of them are old and i only really use three brushes but i like to keep them in case.
5) My water pot (with a paper towel over to stop my cats from drinking my water)
6) My old and dusty pattell (which is the top half of a CD case)
7) Tools and stuff.

For my army i will be painting them in groups of 3 and keeping them all with the same beard colour (so three with a black beard, three with a light brown beard, three with a dark brown beard etc...) and these are the first of many..

They arn't finsihed yet though (i need to highlight the metal, paint the gems and do the horns and bases) but as you can see the colour scheme is going to be green with brown (making them look like chocolate limes..) it a good scheme in a that it is quite dull so fits with the dwaven imagery. And there is a close up of one (the picture is way too dark for some reason...)

As for the army list im aiming for:-

Thane (Great weapon, shield)
Dragon Slayer
16 Warriors (Full command)
8 Quarrellers
8 Quarrellers
Bolt thrower (Engineer)
Grudge Thrower (Engineer)

Which totals about 500 points (give or take a few points) it's not a competitive list but i does have a few fun things for me to paint (hence the dragon slayer)

And background? Well i love the Warhammer background and so im going to take a while and write a comprehensive backstory to my dwarf army, but currently im think of a low technology hold (no black powder) living somewhere in the region os Kislev defending a pass or some other important thing, but like i say i'm going to give it some thought later..

And that is about as far as i have got, i have painted a Thane but he's not well painted but i'll try and post a picture soon.

And also im totally open to feedback, if anyone has any suggestions or and Dwaven generals want to give advice on what runes to take or what units are good or bad feel free to post.

I'll update in the next few days, when i've finished the current batch of warriors..

If this is the resonable tabletop standard in Nottingham then my gues would be Nottingham is entirely populated by artists.

These Dwarfs are very good!

A bit too modest about your painting skills maybe? This is better than tabletop. Good to see another warhammer-log, because in my opinion, there are too many 40k-logs)

My tip would be to use unified colors. You seem to be dioing that by the look of your first pics, so keep up. I think dwarf armies tend to look a bit disorganised if a lot of contrasting (beard)colors are used.

Good luck with the army

I totally agree, thats why i can't understand GW decision to paint the studio army all different colours (the red and blue Longbeards are perticually bad) so my whole army will be unified in the colour scheme. Also about beards i'm going to have five main colours or beard which will be black, light brown, dark brown, blonde and a more blonde with bleached bone beards and i don't imagen that would make the army look too bad.

Also as im about finished with these three, im going to be starting my next three tomorrow and i will do a dwarf painting guide showing people how i paint my dwarfs, this might slow me down a little but i think it'll be worth it.

Thats about it. Well now its dark here but I forgot to put in my (badly) painted thane with these lot, so i'll try to get a pic tomorrow.

And so I couldn't resist such a great looking model, and i've decided to mount it on a 50mm base, and here is the army currently..

By far the best thing about WW is that in the museum you can go and have a look at the 'Eavy Metal Dwarf army and nothing gives inspiration more that seeing the studio army in the flesh, so with renewed vigor I shall continue...

Also as a side note in the Museum at the moment they have the soon to be released Wood Elf female hero with spear and sword in a very nice lime green colour scheme and the hero with the bird (who is in the army book) that is soon to be released, so it's well worth going down if you're near by.

Just a quickie NetGuru: Looking good! How do you do your metal? I can never get it looking that smooth and clean.

Just a quickie NetGuru: Looking good! How do you do your metal? I can never get it looking that smooth and clean.

Basically all I do is paint the area with a solid even base coat of Boltgun metal, then I get some ink and really water the ink down so it's probably one part ink to five parts water, and then i cover the area with it, and because the ink is so watered down you can get it pool in the recesses to create shadows but you can then drag the ink over the blade and it will dull the blade and take of the unrealistic shiny effect and then i do an extreme hightlight of mithrill silver.
