The event is over and it was a tremendous success. Everyone showed up on time, 99% of the models were remembered and brought, the event was run in an orderly fashion, and the entire game was played properly and completed in 6 turns. This should go down as urban legend and be remembered as "that event where we thought it wasn't going to get past turn 2, but the organiser was really onto it and totally got everything sorted".

Based on today's result i'm sure there will be more similar events to come! The official youtube slideshow commentary is in playlist format and will take you an hour and a half to watch. Get your popcorn, link your friends.

Below: The guys show up at 8am at FTW games, to find that i've prepared four tables 6x4 stacked next to each other with their longer sides touching. Big polyfoam boards are put up in the middle line between the large table edges, so that the players can get on with deploying their troops in secret (and much more quickly than alternating deployment would allow). This table size turned out to be perfect - both deployment zones are basically carpeted in models. Anticipation is in the air, big time.

Below: The vision-blocking boards are removed, terrain is stacked back into place, and the 15,000 points per side game is poised to begin. None of the players have participated in anything this epic before... ever!

Below: In Paul's corner, the skaven have massed a huge unit of poison wind globadiers, and an even larger unit of jezzails, all packed behind a screen of rat swams, and even a river. But it turns out that the forces of chaos have sent an array of monstrous, fast moving, combat troops. Dragon, manticore, knights, ogres, dragon-ogres....

http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/5269/sflank.jpg (http://img577.imageshack.us/i/sflank.jpg/)

Below: 'Team Skaven' have decided to completely blitz one of the three objectives on their left flank with just about everything. This ensures that they easily hold one objective and can sweep around towards the middle, potentially capturing it as well for a secure victory. The chaos army simply doesn't have any resources to stop THREE hellpit abominations, a plague furnace, and a horde of 18 rat ogres all piled on one flank. Bruuutal.

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/2554/steamroll.jpg (http://img9.imageshack.us/i/steamroll.jpg/)

Below: As the day went on, we could all see that since both sides had stacked their power on different flanks, the tide of battle would swirl around the central objective - a tower containing the remaining warpstone meteorite (also causing any garrison to suffer -1 toughness while in the building). The lone grey seer towers above the field on his bell, while he screams orders to the scores of rats swarming as far as the eye can see.

http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/4605/central.jpg (http://img262.imageshack.us/i/central.jpg/)

Below: Surprise! Normally a horde unit of 40 slaves would not be expected to defeat even 18 chaos marauders of khorne, armed with great weapons. But when most of their front rank turned out to be skaven assassins, the entire enemy unit was deleted without even a single strikeback. What? huh?

Truely epic.

What's that? you want a horde of 18 rat ogres?......well why stop at only one horde?

Great use of a lot of units which you don't normally see, and a great demonstration of just how many models can be annihilated in a 6 turn game. TOTAL BLOOD BATH.

Personally I'm more of a smaller games man, but this is just brilliant for having on while you paint (there's little more inspiring than seeing 15000 points of painted miniatures smashing into each other).

Shame there were a few tactical errors, but I think that's to be expected when you have so many units on the board. It's hard enough to keep track of your plans at 3000 points.

Anyway, great work vaul, can't wait for your next tournament

P.S. hilarious use of the brass orb

I tried to put something like this together once and it was a complete flop.

The players couldn't agree on the structure and the best way to have it run so in the end it just fell apart and didn't happen.

So a tip of the hat to you for finding a way to make it work :)

Booo !! Poor skaven!! Cheated as always !! Treachery was everwhere !! Darn cowardly slaves for not holding the hill !! Who paid off the driver of the doomwheel to drive next to the abom !? Who sold those faulty weapon teams that exploded at the end ?? And really why were not one those big buses of clanrats (60ish?) near the centeral tower??

Amazing models and pics !! Thank u for the report must have been hard looking over your notes of 8+ hours of game play.

That was completey awesome! Never seen so many points on the field at once! :D

Curious as to why the chaos team didn't line up like 5 charges on the slaves on the far right objective turn 5, but who can blame them, they got it anyway.

Also, thought it was werid that the Skaven Players didn't move the Vermin Lord to the left side of the building for a sacrafcial charge turn 6, as from the photo it would have been out of charge arc of the maurders, and in addition the mauraders were turned into rats anyways.

The skaven team could really have just placed screens of gutter runners in the way of any chaos infantry moving towards the central building while they garrisoned it themselves with 65 stormvermin, 8 assassins, 3 warlords, and a BSB - that should have kept everything out.

Or the chaos team could have just put together one horde of 40 knights at one objective and another horde of 40 chosen at the other...

...but i'm glad nobody showed up with this sort of mindset. We had a strategic, tactical, fair, interesting and exciting game without any need for resorting to underhanded tactics.

Very awesome Vaul, keep it up!

I'm glad everyone had fun, I'm glad they were in the spirit of the game. Looking forward to more epic battles, maybe do one with 'good guy' vs' 'good guy' armies next to mix it up.

A ridiculously amazing game. I'm glad that everyone had a blast, and to be honest I was really surprised that the Skaven did so well. With magic taking such a back seat, I thought for sure that the superior combat prowess of the Warriors would have them win handily. I didn't account for the sheer warp-laced awesome that is horded Rat Ogres though.

Thank you for taking the time to report this sir, and a tip of the hat as well for getting it running!

Finished watching this series. Excellent share. Really interesting these big battles are with mega units and things you don't see much.

I always knew Skaven were sneaky but this game made me realize even more so just how many tricks those sneaky rats have at thier disposal.

Your commentary led me to believe those tricksy Skaven would pull off atleast 1 of the thousand tricks they had up thier sleeve for the win but it wasn't in the cards.

I'm not sure why all of those assassins weren't placed in the watchtower- that would have been my go to unit for holding onto it- but my guess is that the skaven just hoped it wouldn't come down to it- Skaven aren't very good inside buildings as SiN doesn't apply-

Still the way it played out- being a skaven player I chuckled for at least a full minute when the pitiful slave unit turned out to contain 7 assassins- and I agree, skitter leaping + brass orb thrown at the engineers feet- awesome-

Possibly later in the year, but its best not to cling to expectations when waiting for more vaul reports.

That's a shame. Yesterday I had an "8th edition Vaul" marathon, to get some painting done. It was truely epic.
