View Full Version : dragoons guard

So i didnt think id be updating enough to put this in the project section, but i changed my mind :) lol, so heres my WIP guardsmen

(this is most of my stuff scattered accross the old posts)

So ive been slowly buildin myself a guard army, unfortunatly i started painting them black and grey before i realized that it was a very unoriginal thing to do (so black and grey they stay ) Anyways so here are some WIP shots in various stages of being built:
(from left to right)
-2 minorly converted lasgunners, the first using scraps as protection, the second sneaking up behind someone with his trusty knife in hand
-a plasma gunner carrying his weapon on his back
-the command squad 'mule'
-a medic to either replace me metal one or join the infantry command squads. he has what is suppost to be a bone saw for amputation in his hand. im not really pleased with it atm so i may just chuck the idea
-a missile launcher loader, carrying the missle on his back. leather for ease and comfort
-grenade launcher guardsman, just luggin around his gear
-and a WIP autocannon team, with makeshift trench

here are some of my WIP officers
-my sergent in the process of being shot. i like it, but definatlly stole the idea from someone
-a couple of my JOs, pretty basic
-my SO (for the moment, depends if i like a different model better in the future), FW chimera commander (who now has to walk, sorry pal!) with some legs

so heres a picture of my russ, few angles
i still need to go out and get some green stuff to model bags and luggage and the like, as well as eventually adding some camo netting kind of stuff on it, and this is only the most basic paintjob to give u the idea, still have to weather and thicken the colours, add borders to the camo and such
but there it is :P

some of my WIP vets, some with and some without their resperator heads
and a slightly more updated picture
and another wip shot of my heavy weapon teams

Also have some painted shots, not completely done but you get the picture:

more pictures to come soon!

appriciate some feedback, positve or not though realize im a novice builder and painter

id say that you have some very impressive skills.

i especially like the heavy weapons team with the one guy reloading. rather original ;)

There is some very nice stuff there (must get my own log up to date) with some fantastic poses -the officer getting shot-. Just one tiny criticism , and I hate doing this, it never seems right somehow, the guys holding the rifles upside down. No one who has ever been in 'green' would ever hold one like that. But that little thing asside great stuff, might even pinch a couple of ideas there.

24-03-2006, 13:37
oh yea? lol i didnt know :P i was using the normal gun holding arm, cutting off the arm and putting a new trigger and brace, i found the hand already there looked more natural than the open hand that matches one of the guns

This is one of the guys I mean. I feel I'm being picky here but its......its just wrong you know?!
the rest are really good and I look forward to seing more

Hope you dont mind the comments:)

24-03-2006, 20:59
Impressive, the black armour needs some work though, hopefully that's what you meant by them not being completely done. The khaki would benefit from a very watered down blue or black ink-wash I think.

24-03-2006, 20:59
no, i love the comments! if you dont tell me how else will i know? how do you sujest i have him hold the gun though? because i dont really wanna start giving them straps cause then i gotta give them all straps

and yes, i still need to highlight the armour, add the numbers to their shoulders etc

24-03-2006, 21:30
so a little update, been workin a bit on one of my autocannon teams, and i worked out that i wanted the gunner to be pointing somethign out to the spotter, and in order to do that i had to use two hand on two different arms, alond with chopping up the gun handels. i also decided i was gunna shove the helmetless sergent head into a brand new helmet, and i think it turned out pretty well (though its a bit crroked, ill probably end up adding the dangling neck strap). Also had to raise the gunner up as when i left the guy to dry his arms dropped a little bit :P but thats ok, plasticard was the perfect amout higher :D

Nothing wrong with holding the rifle by the fore grip, just with the mag facing down, or cradling it in the hand as per the 2 below

25-03-2006, 18:54
yea, i always thought that looked a bit akward :S

28-03-2006, 22:26
anyways, so i was thinking of changeing my standard bearer a bit, do you think hed look better with a bit of red?
something like this:
or instead of some of the grey, or on the side black bits instead of the top and bottom ones?

yes no?

29-03-2006, 09:06
Hell yeah! Looks much more. . . regal and important. Good show old chap!

Dave out.

so heres a little update, been painting up some guardsmen, also building more on the side
nothing too serious

The army is really developing some character. Looks good.

I've been trying to finish my Guard army for nearly 4 years. I constantly change the color scheme, army list/theme and the environment their in. I know how tough it can be to finish an IG army and hope you don't hit any walls like I did.

07-04-2006, 16:20
Good character army it really brings out the army feel to it. The guardsmen are hiding shooting and being shot wich adds alot of the battel feel to those minis. Excellent bases on the heavy weapon teams and other to looks like a solid army. The painting looks good for TT but itr coul be better with some thin washes of flesh wash for the skin and so on.

keep it up

08-04-2006, 18:33
They are lookin pretty awesome, from what I can tell anyway lol, I am just in from work, and am completely shattered, so much so my eyes are not behaving properly just now. but yeh the red on the standard looks dandy! The recesses on the fatigues could maybe be not so dark, maybe a wash of shadow grey or something, because at the mo the fatigues feel kinda unfinished?? Just a thought.

16-04-2006, 00:42
another little update

still need to clean up stuff, do the bases, highlight the armour, do the shoulderpads, hair, all that jazz

let me know what you think!

18-04-2006, 21:22
Here is my mostly done force so far. They still need numbers on their shoulders and all that jazz but im gunna wait until i finalize my army list before i do that. lemmie know what you think!

19-04-2006, 08:24
Very nice looking force there, Dragoon! A great starting place for your Guard army. They'l do very well for lots of City-fighting on Medusa V this summer ;)

19-04-2006, 09:35
Indeed they will look nice in some cityfight terrain on Medusa V!
Good work!

-peace out

20-04-2006, 02:22
lots of fighting and hopefully winning! :P

24-04-2006, 21:11

so this was me workin a bit on my basilisk, was thinkin it was a bit busy... i dunno, added some armour plates (their from the leman russ sponsons) on the side of the basilisk to give the feeling that its more armoured without covering alot up. Sandbags for the same reason

26-04-2006, 13:47
oh, and the console is from the rhino interior, help up with most of a mortar

10-06-2006, 23:56
So ive been away for a bit, and progress is slow but i figured id take some pictures for you:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c18/drag...sileloader1.jpg (http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c18/dragoon_79/WIPMissileloader1.jpg)
Here we have a guardsman, originally was going to be a medic, but didnt work out as i wanted him to have a saw or something but was unhappy with the product. Becuase i wanted a missile loader to still have his gun, this model worked out perceftly. The hand holding the fin is the one holding motar bomb from the hvy weapon kit.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c18/drag...IPofficers2.jpg (http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c18/dragoon_79/WIPofficers2.jpg)
simple sergent, yellin out orders and such

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c18/drag...guardsmen05.jpg (http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c18/dragoon_79/WIPguardsmen05.jpg)
a couple of my guardsmen (guy jumping over barrel, guy holding missile, guy layingdown/dead, guy shooting at the sky)

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c18/drag...guardsmen06.jpg (http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c18/dragoon_79/WIPguardsmen06.jpg)
a pile of guys... soon to be painted.

all C+C welcome!

11-06-2006, 00:40
The guardsmen leaping over the barrel is great! Loads of character in that model alone. Always great to see a Guard army taking shape. Keep it up!

30-06-2006, 21:49
Heres a little update, still lots to do but isnt there always?

02-07-2006, 21:17
heres another update, finished painting the previous group. here is a shot of my completed army thus far:

i also went out and bought 2 boxes of cadian inf, a box of 3 hvy weapon bases, and a chimera. heres the begining of that:

appriciate any comments!

Brush your teeth
02-07-2006, 22:48
looking good, the guy with the rocket launcher through the window is going to great when it's finished

02-07-2006, 23:52
Wow! Lotta nice conversions there. I like them, good job man!!

25-07-2006, 05:11
Been a little while since ive posted, been busy with work and not found alot of time to relax....

anyways, heres some quickly takin shots of some of my new guardsmen! Made use of some heads from other kits, as well as some brass peices from an old school boat model kit. When painted they'll be made to look like statues. Also have a lascannon team using a tanktrap for defense. Enjoy!

25-07-2006, 10:26
all looking good, love the missile, just remember to not spray the polyester as it melts as i found the hard way once, so undercoat that before spraying...:D

25-07-2006, 17:36
lol, yea ive done that before :S

05-09-2006, 00:30
another update: bought a sentinel and a chimera, trying to deviate from the norm a bit, so i bring you....

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c18/drag...79/WIPchim1.jpg (http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c18/dragoon_79/WIPchim1.jpg)
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c18/drag...79/WIPSent1.jpg (http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c18/dragoon_79/WIPSent1.jpg)

also been working on some normal guardsmen. here a few including the bald junior officer, a demo charge guy, plus normal lasgunners with bits from other sets. added more shots of the guy who (is suppost) to be stabbing someone with his bayonete (pardon my spelling). i like him the best of the group... also harder than i thought to depict someone stabbing instead of just holding his gun weird.

and btw, the two guys layign down on the hvy weapon base are suppost to be corpses. i was trying to show the grim nature of their situation. Theyll be painted to look more like corpses :)

05-09-2006, 09:07
Nice heavy weapon bases and I liked the bayonet action. Any chance you could do a guardsman in "rifle butting" mode?

I looked at the bases on the first page and I thought the colour scheme for those matched the uniform too well. I think if the bases where brownish then the guys would stand out better. You just have to thrown on a brown wash ot dry brush them Graveyard earth.

05-09-2006, 09:49
very nice army. i like the work you've done on all the guardsmen, and i'm wait for the entire chimera.

i keep an eye on your work, and i may steal one idea or two:angel:

05-09-2006, 13:23
static grass, the rifle butting is the next one on the list :D you canexpect to see one soon! i also think the brown base is a good idea, and i think ill do it! (after seeing other guardsmen in the forum with brown uniform and grey bases, the contrast is nice)

tancrede, take as many ideas as you like, as immitation is the best kind of flattery

30-09-2006, 21:07
Alrighty, so heres a couple more clips! If youd like to see some close-ups of some of the models let me know!

And heres couple guardsmen takin a ride of the soon to be ogryn chimera:

30-09-2006, 21:37
Nice to see you back again Dragoon! Nice work with the helmet-less guy on the chimera, his pose looks very nice.

-peace out
