The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2010-2011 Month 5

Hello all,

This is the thread for the work you have done in FEBRUARY and after a week (to give folks time to post their work) it becomes the thread to post your comments on others work and discuss what you are painting in MARCH.

Lots of folks dropping out.

The difference between people that fail and people that succeed in life is quite often that those who succeed were determined to do so ....
... and refuse to quit.

Well done to all of you still in this.

All the very best,

The story so far:

640x480 seems to work best OR use thumbnails
Bigger than this results in the scroll bar of doom for many.

What is it all about?

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. (Just because of the numbers of people involved) They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of September 2010 and finishing with their last post on the last day of August 2011. So we have this month, whilst everyone signs up, to collect, build, convert, undercoat and otherwise get yourself ready to go with the first work in progress starting in September.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting and the rest of the painters to offer words of encouragement.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys

Because this is harder than you would think ... As last year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two catagories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying which army and how many points you intend to paint.

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Q : Can Doi sign out?
A : No he can't.

STILL TO DO: Nothing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I wanted to do two giants, but I broke off the other one's arm. It has been fixed now, so I'll do that one this month.

UNIT: 3 Trolls, 3 additional Chaos Warriors

STILL TO DO: Completed.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I got the trolls courtesy of a trade with felloe TOFP member Gaarew on Monday and just had to paint them up. The speed and finish was a real high to me. As for lows I am not looking forward to doing the Marauders to finish my Battalion box off.

POINTS : 183 (total: 1030).

ARMY: Goblins

UNIT: spear chukka, 15 spider riders (full command), 10 squig hoppers, Night goblin BSB (armour of destiny), Night goblin Big boss (shield + light armour)

STILL TO DO: Nothing.

HIGHS: Got tons painted.

AND LOWS: I'll probably never use the squig hoppers in a game, and I'll probably only use 5 or maybe 10 of the spiders... not to worry though.

POINTS : 35 + 225 + 150 + 105 + 34 = 549

TOTAL POINTS: 1279 (using 7th ed army book, I will update points values once I've bought the 8th ed army book... ie on saturday).

I guess this means that I've completed the tale, points wise, however I still have tons of stuff (6 trolls, 40 wolf riders, over 100 night gobbos... hell, I'm even thinking about taking Jind's advice and getting a giant....or two) still to paint, so I think I'll just bump myself up to the adults table and MOVE TO THE MENS CATEGORY if that's alright with everyone.

On to the pictures:

Spear Chukka

Squig hoppers

Big Boss and BSB

For next month, I'm going to paint up a couple of sneaky stabby stealthy speed monkeys...or whatever they're called (to represent big bosses), and hopefully I can pop home and get 6 trolls to paint up.

EDIT: Dice roll 4 (once again, the talisman of protection is a worthless item)

Hello TOFP! Its been a very productive Feb.,

ARMY: Bugman's upland dwarves

UNIT: 8 quarller rangers, 6 regular quarllers, 6 miners (2 and a unit filler) 1 grudge thrower

BACKGROUND/THEME: Buying back a Joker!!! These were mainly to bulk up existing units.

STILL TO DO: Since the pics, I've highlighted the leather, and added static grass, so their done

HIGHS AND LOWS: These are the worst pics yet, really, really, really, bad. Almost not worth posting. Other than that, I'm happy with the models. I'm happy with the quanity I've gotten done. I think my fav is the bag-piper musician for my rangers.

POINTS : 436 (total: 1307).

Dice roll: 2
Group shot of everything I've finished this month.

Ranger command. I'm really happy with how the bag piper came out!

Some miners with filler!

and a grudge thrower sans two crew!

Ok so i must have been in a timewarp or something and missed two months in a row! What the...

Ok but anyways im gonna make up for it thiw time with a Demon Prince of Death and some dogs. The most expensive model in my army and the cheapest!

ARMY: Warriors of Chaos

UNIT: Demon Prince, 10 Warhounds

STILL TO DO: Other models..?

HIGHS: Building and converting the Demon Prince was a joy and altough it did not end up exactly as my sketch im satisfied with it. And the painting was a real treat with that big Purple Sun transforming out of his hands giving light to the otherwise black and dark model it would be.

The Warhounds was a pain to put together and a dream to paint. Used the same bodycolor on them but fur and other bits are a bit of this and that. Makes them look better than if i had made them exactly like each other.

AND LOWS: Well putting them hounds together and filling gaps.. About it..

POINTS : 560 for the demon and 60 for the dogs.

TOTAL POINTS: 1375 points done.

NEXT: Im going to paint up warriors now!

More pics in my WIP as usual.

03-03-2011, 04:06
ARMY: Tomb Kings

UNIT: 5 Skeleton Light Horsemen and 12 Skeleton Archers

HIGHS AND LOWS: New book to be released soon, so not sure what to paint next...

Careless incantations for raising the dead often results in half-baked units. The Priests were too busy politicking amongst themselves when raising these light horsemen. Now, half-man, half-horse, they give the (false) impressions that they were once noble creatures of ancient lore...

"Hey Akmet, they said they'd be cutting the rations!"
"The rations! Not the rations!"

"Hey Aram, gimme a hand up!"
"Haven't got one to spare, Brabilar, I'm pulling my bow with my teeth as it is..."

And now I have come to the question I've been wanting to ask... what should I paint next? The TK release is in May, I hear, and I think if I push really hard, I can finish this 2k by then. Should I do that or hold back a little (like paint 2 characters for March and April) until the release?

03-03-2011, 07:19
ARMY: Empire: 2000 Points (MEN)

UNIT: Alic Meier, Master of the White Wolf

BACKGROUND/THEME: Arch Lector Hansmier enlisted the aid of Alic to lead a unit of Knights of the White Wolf on his quest to secure the pass to Brass Keep.

BUILD/CONVERSION: The Master of the White Wolf model. No conversion was needed.

PAINTING: Undercoated light grey. The armor took the most work, partially because I just couldn't seem to pull of the effect I was going for. I wanted it to look like each plate of the armor was crafted from a a single pearl. In the end a friend showed me how to blend Skull White, Bleached Bone, Ice Blue and Enchanted Blue in order to create the right look. Once that was finished the rest of the model went fairly quickly. Other colors used include Shining Gold, Burnished Gold, Mithril Silver, Boltgun Metal on the Armor. Dwarf Bronze was used on the horn. Codex Grey, Bleached Bone and Skull White were used for the Wolf Pelt. The top of the hammer was made to look like a sapphire by roughly blending Enchanted Blue with Chaos Black and Skull White.

BASING: Just Snakebite Leather until I finish the unit he will be joining. Thanks to Vaiuri I plan to try to make the unit's bases look like a mountain pass using rocks and bushes along the edges of the units, accented with snow and twigs.

STILL TO DO: The base.

HIGHS AND LOWS: This was a bit of a pain. I had to basically repaint all the armor three times before I got it somewhere near what I wanted. I want to give thanks to my friend Xsergg who helped show me how to get the effect I wanted. I still do not like painting horses, but feel this one turned out even better than the one last month.

POINTS: Templar Grand Master (145) with Giant 'Blade' (60), The Crimson Amulet (20) and The Other Trickster's Shard (15) = 240 points

Total This Month: 240

Total Painted so far: 1167 (Six Months Painting and 1 Joker almost bought back)

To do this month: Warrior Priest (on foot) and a Great Cannon.

Dice Roll: 5

03-03-2011, 08:37
Few months ago I almost declared myself as a MAN but now it seems it's good I stuck with the BOYS. I've found it really hard to find the inspiration for painting. Last month it was joker and this month it next to nothing... I've literally hundred models waiting to be painted and can't really get myself even to touch them...

Oh well. All is well that ends well.

Maybe I just paint the steam tank to reach the 1000p. It might not lead to a playable army but at least I would be half the way to a regular army. And wouldn't be bailing out like last year...

ARMY : Empire : 1000 Points (BOYS)

"UNIT": flagellants (2), knightly order knight (from Bretonnia...), greatswords (4, including count's champion)

BACKGROUND/THEME: After the Storm of Chaos the forces of Empire are mixed and in bad shape. This month I included a Bretonnian mercenary (I know - heresy! But he and his upcoming twin have a reason for it, 'couse they're actually women. What a twist!) for the sake of variation. And because I'm hoping to get my Bretonnian painted when they release the new armybook (so no hurry then).

BUILD/CONVERSION: Nothing. Except with the Count's Champion who has body of Chaos Warrior, hammerhead from dwarfs and head from a flagellant (I think).

PAINTING: Mostly base coat with brown, foundation paints shadowed with washes and highlighted with basic paints. The knight and the Count's Champion were primed black and the greatswords ere primed white.

BASING: Most models have their base decorated saw dust, painted black, highlighted with dark grey, space wolves gray (I think) and bleached bone and white. Some flock added also from various sources. Count's Champion has a resin base and the guy left from him has cork.

STILL TO DO: These guys are ready to go!

HIGHS AND LOWS: Absolutely now interest in painting. Maybe it's because Finland's long winter (as the same thing happened during last year's challenge) or just because I'm bored easily. Got at least something painted though! So that's a high!

POINTS : flagellants (20), knightly order knight (23), greatswords (52, including count's champion)

TOTAL POINTS : This month 95p. / Overall 844p. (six months painting and one Joker) - only 156p. to go! Yeay!

DICE ROLL : 1 (like almost all rolls to wound by my state troops)

And as a little extra, WIP:

03-03-2011, 11:37
Dice Roll: 6
Army: 1k High Elves (Boys)
Unit: 6 Remaining Sea Guard, Full Command with Banner of Eternal Flame
Build/Conversion: Straight out of the Island of Blood Sea Guard.
Still to do: Just flock the bases. I guess in the end, I'll probably do it all at once when everything is done.
Highs and Lows: Well, I thought I got a bit more done than I have pointed up. But I guess I did a lot of work on Swordmasters that I'm not submitting this month. Swordmasters are a bit easier to paint, which is definately a High!
Points: 113
Total Points: 550
Next Month: Finish off my Swordmasters. I have painted 6 of them. Just have to get around to painting the other 12 now, but other stuff keeps cropping up in my painting schedule.

03-03-2011, 11:43
Dice Roll: 6
Army: 2k Beastmen, Mens
Unit: 18 Bestigors. Full Command, Standard of Discipline
Build/Conversion: Straight out of the box plastic Bestigors.
Still to do: There are some small details not done on probably most of them. I know at least 6 of them I haven't done the black shading and the grip on the Great Weapons.
Highs and Lows: I think they look pretty good in the end. Like how they turned out, even if I'm not convinced with the red shirt. Think my second unit will get black shirts instead.
Points: 261
Total Points: 1010
Next Month: I'm hoping to focus on my High Elves (get as much done as possible) and other projects next month. So think I'll take it a bit easy, and finish painting Taurox.

03-03-2011, 11:48
Dice Roll:6
Army: 1k Beastmen, Boys
Unit: Tuskgor Chariot
Build/Conversion: This is converted from an Orc Boar Chariot. The carriage was extended a bit to accomodate for the 25mm base to slide in (This will be my character chariot if I want one, or a Bestigor can pop in if not). Also, one of the Boars is a Tuskgor from the other chariot, the other one has been converted. I did convert two, but decided to mix it up so my other metal one won't look identical as well.
Still to do: The Gor with spear is finished, but I haven't glued him on yet as I haven't started clearing panels in my case yet. So if I glue him on just yet, I can't take that chariot anywhere without risking him breaking off.
Highs and Lows: Well... I accidentally glued the right wheel on the wrong way. Luckily I was able to rip it off, touch up the paint, and glue it back on. Haven't gotten around to covering that hole yet, not that it'd take long... High is, I definately think the chariot looks pretty cool in the end! I just hope that Beastmen get plastic chariots in the future, as it's much easier to work with than metal (Have to deal with the stupid riders arms falling off on my other one).
Total Points: 660
Next Month: As mentioned above, probably gonna take it a little easier this month on the Beastmen. Probably finish painting up my Hero Bray Shaman.

03-03-2011, 15:29
Unfortunately I have to use a Joker this month, my second one. I'm at the very brink of failure having spend to much time on 40k and Napoleonics.
Keep up the good work!

This may be crazy, but im going to add another army - 1000 points of Nurgle Warriors of Chaos please :p

Exalted hero, Sword of swift slaying, enchanted shield, talisman of protection, mark of Nurgle, Daemonic mount and blood curdling roar - 245

Total so far - 515

Dice Roll - 4

03-03-2011, 19:46
Last month I painted a Lion Chariot, but I edited into my post, which probably made you miss it. If that could be changed and I get put back in that'd be great. Sorry bout that

And this months contribution:

High Elves: Boys

Unit: 9 Swordmasters with Banner and Musician

Still to do: Basing and touch ups.

Highs: metallics are looking very nice, been having problems with it.

Lows: Slightly rushed toward the end, so the gems in particular aren't perfect.

Points: 165 (off the top of my head)

Dice Roll: 6 (Do I still need to put this here, I'll be commenting on everyone I think!)

Well done to everyone who's made it, we're half way!

03-03-2011, 20:20

70 - Damsel
210 - Bretonnian Lord
394 - total

Total Points: 1490

Unit: Exhalted Hero, Axe of Anti Heros, Charmed Shield = 145 points.

Dice Roll: 4

Better late than never, eyh? Just had some camera problems...

04-03-2011, 23:36
Vampire Counts : 1000 POINTS

Dice roll: 1

UNIT: Wight King.

BACKGROUND/THEME: Reanimated by Karstellin's necromantic powers, the old lord of castle Svirmkar now leads his former knights as the vampire's body guard.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Old GW (I think) model I've had for a long time.

PAINTING: Nothing special, but I like the simplicity of the scheme.

BASING: Paint graveyard earth, wash scorched brown, drybrush graveyard earth, drybrush 1:1 graveyard earth:bleached bone. Apply scorched grass.

STILL TO DO: Finished.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Quick and simple as I've had a busy month.

04-03-2011, 23:45
Orcs & Goblins : 1000 POINTS

Dice roll: 3

UNIT: 3 Cave Trolls.

BACKGROUND/THEME: Cave trolls often follow night goblin forces, having learned that violence and scavengings are to be found in equal proportion.

BUILD/CONVERSION: River trolls with a slightly different paintjob.

PAINTING: Skin dark angels green, snot green, goblin green, scorpion green.

BASING: Thick wash dark flesh, heavy drybrush vermin brown, light drybrush snakebite leather.

STILL TO DO: Finished.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Nice to paint something a bit bigger than a goblin!

POINTS : 120

04-03-2011, 23:53
Empire : 1000 POINTS

Dice roll: 2

UNIT: Wizard.

BACKGROUND/THEME: Jade wizards often gravitate to Talabheim to commune more intimately with Taal. For a small contribution to the coffers of their order they can sometimes be persuaded to aid the forces of Talabheim with their control over the flora and fauna of the battlefield.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Empire Wizards kit.

PAINTING: Skin tallarn flesh, dwarf flesh, elf flesh, wash ogryn flesh. Green robe using the green foundation paints for a more natural colour.

BASING: Wash scorched brown, base calthan brown, drybrush khemri brown. Static grass to finish.

STILL TO DO: Finished.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Makes a nice change from red!

05-03-2011, 02:49
I swear that if I don't have 5 kroxigor done by the end of Feb that I will ask the Warseer Gods for a temporary ban from warseer until I'm done them!!!

So... did I make it?

Lizardmen Unit: 5 kroxigor

Points: 275 (new total: 1530)

Conversion: nothing.

Highs and lows: This were actually painted before but that was in green before I decided on yellow. The green shows through a bit but now too bad. I also had a set back when I was 'done' and then realized I had used bronze rather than gold :o

Didn't painst anything for orcs (I'm only 50 points away from being done) but that will be over next month as I need 20 savages and 14 arrer boyz for a tournament.

The lizardmen... that's a different problem... some of the stuff I planned to paint (20 temple guard and a chief on ancient steg) I traded away... so unless I take the easy route and paint my kroak all I have is either a bunch of skinks (which don't add up fast) or saurus cav (which take a long time). So I'm going to have to figure something out there...

05-03-2011, 03:43
Army: Warriors of Chaos
Unit: Giant
Points: 225
Points so Far: 225

This guy was a pain in the a** to paint, but I learned a lot about mixing colours to get different effects. I also gained an appreciation for glazing washing; lifesavers for powering through the last bits of a painful mini.

Not a completely finished product, but shows off the gut-jaw well.

Sadly I'm going to have to drop out of the TOFP :(.

It's been a slow painting year for me so far as it is and I've just started the final year of my course and all of my subjects this semester form part of my zoology major so I really need to buckle down and study so I can get the marks I need to get into a Master's degree.

It's been a fantastic experience being involved in the TOFP since the beginning and not only have I managed to get several armies painted but I've made more than a few friends here too.

My thanks to Harry and Braad for all the effort they've put into running this endeavor over the years and to all of the painters for all of the inspiration and motivation.

Hopefully I'll be able to jump back into the swing of things when the fifth TOFP rolls around but you might find me starting up a Plog at some point before then for the little bits and pieces I get done (even if I've been promising that since the first TOFP ).

Hi all,

Dice Roll 5

Unit BloodThirster

Points 225 (As started him previously)

Highs: I really enjoyed finishing him off, was a lot of fun
Lows: I wish I had more old school GW models to use, will hunt around the attic some more

Still to do: Base - I have from previous suggestion put some effort into basing to get more of a theme going, I'm waiting to see what Cathexis's Silverhelms look like before I can finish the horse, failing that I'll go for one of Paull's Brets :)

05-03-2011, 22:23
ARMY : Tomb Kings : 2000 Points (MEN)

UNIT: Screaming skull catapult

BACKGROUND/THEME: The screaming skull catapults fire screaming skulls. It is magic. The mortuary cult's lich priests fire the catapults inhumanly fast with their incantations. It is due to this that the catapults belong to the lich priest side of the troops of the tomb king. (Making the colors red (army) + green (lich priests).

BUILD/CONVERSION: Out of the box screaming skull catapult.

PAINTING: My 'usual'. Though I have improved from just one layer of things. For example the green has 5 layers now.

BASING: None yet.

STILL TO DO: Basing. Though I will be making a custom base for the catapult and it's crew together, but not for the tale.

HIGHS: I love how the top of the catapult turned out. The green ropes with red wood works.

LOWS: Gawd I hate that amount of bone. It is very hard to paint. Also the crew didn't work out as good as I would have wanted them to.

POINTS: 110 (It has skulls of the foe!)

TOTAL POINTS SO FAR : 863 + 110 = 973 (5 Months painting and 1 Joker). I have some things in progress that should bridge me the 25 odd points next month.

Sadly I'm going to have to drop out of the TOFP :(.

Can we have a vote on this?
Because I don't think I'm okay with it... :cries:

05-03-2011, 23:18
I wouldnt normally comment on the TOFP, as I am involved in the TO40kP, but Kaos, your Daemon Prince just amazed me! I love it! Probably my favourite model so far this year!

06-03-2011, 04:23
ARMY: Dwarfs

UNIT: Rune Lord w/ Great Weapon

BUILD / CONVERSION: Nothing really, just a cool old mini :D

PAINTING: The usual colors, but with a little bit of a cheeky tattoo on his massively over-developed forearm. Everybody who I showed this sculpt recently has commented on the Popeye arms. Seriously, what the hell was the sculptor thinking :p

HIGHS: Working on characters.

LOWS: Not working on what I was supposed to ... the Thane and an Engineer are also very near completion. They will obviously be my entry next month, lol :D

POINTS: Call it 261. The runes might change (I'm thinking 2+ re-rollable save, MR of Balance and Spellbreaker) but the cost is close enough. 653 Total.

D6 ROLL: 6

Other stuff... for the Empire I'm working on a unit of 20 Greatswords, total value 230 pts. They will be finished this month and will be my March/April entry.

Dark Apostle
06-03-2011, 08:53
ARMY: Empire, 1000 Points (Boys)

UNIT: Mortar + Hunting dog (counts as pistolier, will bolster my existing unit of 5 pistoliers)

BUILD/CONVERSION: Mortar: Used stank wheels for a more massive look. Crew is a mix of standard crew minis, archers, stank commander and state troops. The ruy in the middle will swap places with a crewmember from one of my great cannons, as he is positioned as if he's about to move the big wheels of the GC.

The hunting dog is one of Orions hounds with a sculpted eyepatch (with an "S" as in Sigmar) and leather harness.

PAINTING: As previous.

BASING: Scorched brown/Snakebite leather/Bleached bone, static grass

STILL TO DO: Nothing... except paint more state troops...

HIGHS AND LOWS: The dog was fun, but it was hard to paint the fur. I had to paint quite a lot of layers to reach into the recesses between evry strand of hair. This seems to be a problem more common on metal minis than plastic.

POINTS: 75 + 18

Army: Empire (boys)

Unit: Unit filler + 3 more Greatswords (12 models)

Points 120 + (200+40+ 150) = 510

Build/Conversion: Mounted knight passing a message to a foot trooper...ruthlessly stolen from somewhere on Warseer!

I also tried to build a light box type thing...but those silly energy saving bulbs make the light really yellow!

Painting: Brought some more paint - it helped!

Painted this month (lamps, no flash):

Complete Greatswords (lamps, flash):

Hello folks. Sorry I was not about at the start of the month. (Swamped with work).

Thanks to Braad for starting up the thread.
Great having the support of guys who just see what needs to be done and do it.
This whole thing would have folded a long time ago were it not for the support of ... everyone really but again special thanks must go to Braad who has become a fantastic second in command. Doing all of the hard work with the table each month and stepping in as required.

Thanks to everyone still in this and posting.
In a month when I have got nearly no painting done coming here and finding you guys still hard at it just motivates and inspires me to get back to it and get my stuff done.

... and that's the whole point of this project.

Thanks fellas.

Hi. Here is my submission for this month.

ARMY : Dwaves: 2000 Points (MEN)

UNIT: Dragonslayer + 14 Clansmen

BACKGROUND/THEME: A clan of Dwarves living in the far north, more-or-less cut off from the rest of civilization, and trying to survive. I'm going for a traditional Northern/Norse/Dark Age archetype, so no flowery Marauder Renaissance Dwarves!

BUILD/CONVERSION: Basic guys, mix of modern and 3rd/4th Ed plastics, plus a couple of metal C Series guys.

STILL TO DO: Basing. I'd planned to do it this morning but the varnish isn't properly dry yet.

HIGHS & LOWS: Squeezing another character into the points allowance was good. I am starting to go slightly nuts painting footsloggers, and I am only just really starting on the infantry now...

POINTS: 75 + 112 = 187
TOTAL POINTS SO FAR : 931 + 187 = 1118
Hopefully I'll have enough next month to buy back a Joker.

The reason for the unit of 14 guys was just to buff an existing (pre-Tale) unit fom my collection up to a decent 40-odd. My attitude towards the tale is that it is more to get what I have painted than to make a killer list.

Finally, here are a couple of pics of things I have started. The Crossbows are going to be made up to a unit of 20, and are a prelude to a flood of Rangers. I am dubious about including a Gyrocopter given my theme but might just do it to break up painting Dwarves.

So, the next few months will involve Crossbows, Shieldmaidens (WIP post later this month), and maybe a Gyrocopter. Further out, there are Rangers, DHW Warriors &/or Hammerers (40!), and Miners.

Now, as my mind turns to the future, one thought comes to my mind - what should I do for the next TOFP?
I want to do something interesting, different, unique and with less beards, so with that in mind, here are my ideas:

(1)Knights of Law (Chaos, but Good Chaos!?)
(2)Daemons of Law (Like Angels, etc)
(3)Knights of Malal (self-destructive Chaos, similar to 1 but with a darker twist)
(4)Cthulhu / Fishmen / Lovecraft army - horrific weird squid-headed aliens. Count as either DoC or Lizardmen.
(5)Amazons - funky hair, women and big monsters. Would count as DE.
Others - Halflings/Gnomes/Fimir/Zoats/Sea Elves/Pirates/Norse/Araby/Tilea/Cathay/Hobgoblins/Nippon/Chaos Dwarves/something else....

I'd love to do any of the first five, but votes/comments/ideas on my next TOFP army would be appreciated.

@Harry: Thanks for all your work in running the TOFP. Braad too.

06-03-2011, 17:27
...so I think I'll just bump myself up to the adults table and MOVE TO THE MENS CATEGORY if that's alright with everyone.

I don't know about everyone, but I'm fine with it, so consider yourself a man!

Last month I painted a Lion Chariot, but I edited into my post, which probably made you miss it. If that could be changed and I get put back in that'd be great. Sorry bout that

How many points was that one?

Exhalted Hero, Axe of Anti Heros, Enchanted Shield = X points.

I already know I will miss this, as I don't have time to look back in the thread to see if stuff has changed. See example above in this post. Let me know the points (PM or as new post in this thread) if you want them in the table.

Sadly I'm going to have to drop out of the TOFP :(.

It's against the rules for you to leave. See the first post.

Thanks to Braad for starting up the thread.

Well, as long as it's fun, we'll keep each other going!

I hereby post 0 points for myself, this month. I'm ahead, so no worries.

Orcs & Goblins : 2000 Points (MEN)

Arachnarok Spider (painting)

I sought inspiration from real spiders, in particular Micrathenas which have these amazing bright yellow patterns on their huge (relatively) abdomens but are mainly black otherwise. Some of them are lighter at the front or semi-transparent, but I decided to do a yellow-orange-red gradient for impact.
I also wanted all the little spiders on the base to be of the same "species" so I did a simple version of the scheme on all of them too.

I assembled the kit and took points for that in last month's tale. I just assembled it straight from the box, no conversion, as this is made for display in a game store.

I had to do a little bit (sometimes quite a bit) of painting almost every single day for two weeks in order to make this in time. I enjoyed every minute of it!
Check my O&G log for more detailed descriptions every step of the way.

Scorched Grass on Graveyard Earth. Graveyard Earth and Bestial Brown mixed with the grass while the glue dries along with some black, to make dirt. Little spiders from the Arachnarok kit and one spider rider musician from the BFSP box.

I forgot to paint the eyes in the goblins on the Howdah. I also skipped some of the small spiders, and I intend to fix that later. Had to finish before the O&G release though, so it stands as it is while it's being displayed there.

Finishing this in two weeks! High all the way!

Arachnarok Spider (minus the assembly points from last month) - 200
Total this month: 200

Army: Bretonnians

Unit: 8 Knight of the Realms

WHATS NEXT: I expect to buy back a joker next month, since this month I'm going to focus on the lords and heroes of the army. So coming up is a lord, a BSB and a prophetess. The lord is almost finished already :D

Hordes of Khorne

3 Chaos Trolls

I wanted to make them look Khornate, which I think worked... but I am not completely satisfied with the minis. The unit as a whole looks OK though.

Highs : finishing another unit.
Lows: I wanted to paint a batch of 18 Warriors for this month, but couldn't get past the basecoat. Hopefully they will be ready for next month!

3 x 45 pts = 135 pts.

Hey is there any age range or category applied so as to become a member of this group, and can a student be a part of it.

07-03-2011, 12:36
Just found out that we have to move house this month (this on top of a broken ankle, cheers landlord), so I think that's that for me - all the packing isn't leaving much time for painting (the little I can do anyway). I'm actually thinking about moving the dark elves on to make room too, so I'm afraid I'm out.

Cheers to Braad for being so helpful last month - sorry to let you down now.

I guess when fate's against you, hey?

Anyway, best of luck to everyone who's still in! Great work guys!

I'm going to drop out, I'm begining to lose interest in my skaven, in favour of my space wolves, sorry guys

Because I don't think I'm okay with it... :cries:

It's against the rules for you to leave. See the first post.

Well since it's against the rules and I wouldn't want to make EmperorNorton cry I may be able to finish up a couple of half done projects this week (since I've managed to free up the odd afternoon) to stay in it.

If I do end up staying though you better expect lots of characters :p.

Hey is there any age range or category applied so as to become a member of this group, and can a student be a part of it.

There are no restrictions from entering but this TOFP is already half finished. If you can catch up quickly there should be no problem entering but if not you might want to wait for the next one to start.

08-03-2011, 05:15
I have to use a joker this month.

OK, first week's over so it's open season for comments!

I'd just like to point out how proud everyone that's still in the tale can be of themselves. Great progress, keeping up steady painting for six months!

@EmperorNorton: That’s one lanky giant man! The maneaters look great, nice skintone.
@ScytheSwathe: Very nice elves. The champion’s (or standard bearer’s ?) lance is really cool with the great red gem.
@Tonberry: Excellent chariot man. Great lions especially.
@Chicken Pig: It all looks excellent. I especially like the strength of the Warrior’s colors. Those troll models are great too.
@Ego Ninja: Very nice shaman. That’s actually one of my favorite GW models. One of the first O&G models I painted for my current army, just cause I liked the model so much. Snikch looks sweet too!
Oh, and another one! Wow! Great nurgle. I especially like the contrasty colors on the Daemonic mount.
@sssk: Welcome to men’s category! That’s really amazing progress in one month.
@Confessor_Atol: Great progress man! Pics aren’t great, but from what I can make out the models have nice colors and contrasts, and look striking on the tabletop, at the very least.
@Kaos: Man, I’ve been holding back the comments on your thread, just so I wouldn’t have to repeat myself here in the tale, but that army shot is AMAZING! You’ve been showing the progress on the daemon prince from different angles and at different times and while very cool, it still always looked like different colors of paint. Right there in that army shot it pops. It really looks like light. Like a glowing whirl of pure energy. The knights totally pop out with the same thing too, and the big models in the back are just really impressive. Awesome awesome stuff!!
@juicytomatoes: Very nice painting. Very clever accidental centaurs too :D New book or not, you can’t go wrong with more skellies!
@Illuminus79: Cool Grand Master, and great progress on the army so far. Look forward to the cannon next month.
@doc_cthulhu: Very nice painting here. Diverse units and colors too.
@someone2040: Excellent Seaguard. Love the freehand on the shields, and the champion is very striking. Also great freehand on the Khorne banner!
@Sturen: Nice swordmasters. Nice and smooth metallics.

@Paull: Wow, very colorful and striking Grail Knights. Characters look great too!
@Rik a Kadrin Kazad: Like Braad said, now that I’ve checked out the first two pages and commented on them, I probably wont be checking back to see if anything has been updated. Hope you get them done soon though.
@Harvey: Hmm, is that Wight King tiny or just really far away? Looks cool, but hard to make out details. Trolls look excellent though, very vivid!, and the empire wizard is nice.
@Malorian: Nice Kroxigor, and you’ve made great progress in the tale so far.
@coolwhip1: This giant is turning out really nice. Gut-jaw cool and suitably gross!
@Hilte2: Excellent prophetesse, and great freehand on the cloth.
@Rikk: Great job on the bloodthirster. Would be nice to make out the detail a bit better in the photo though.
@Maglok: Excellent painting on the catapult man. Looks really smooth and striking. More layers is good :D
@Jericho: You can copy all my previous comments on your stuff man! Just really smooth and great colors. Your stuff really pops!
@Dark Apostle: I’ve already commented on these dudes on your thread. Still love’em, especially how light and puffy you make the shirt fabric look. Very strong faces too, as you always do.
@Inquisitor Pariah: That unit filler is pretty cool. Greatsword unit looks good ranked up.
@Purplebeard: Very nice dwarves, and they especially look great in that 40 strong unit. Very impressive!

@Solun Decius: Looks like a great kit, but you forgot to paint the goblins’ eyes. Also your whole army is smaller than that single monster
@Rutgar: Wow, those knights look really nice and smooth. Great stuff!
@Matrim_Cauthon: Great trolls man! Very striking.

I have a very special painting project going on now, that I'll reveal in a month's time, but I'm hoping I can squeeze in a character and some fanatics/netters or other high point models for next month's ToFP update.

Comments, lets see... (they're alphabetical)

Chicken Pig: Those are awesome troll models, are they old Citadel ones, or something else? Your warrior scheme is going to look really striking in large number, I'm looking forward to it :)
Confessor_Atol: Very nice dwarfs, does the musician come with the bagpipes? They're great!
coolwhip1: Very cool conversion, and a really good skintone. Perhaps a layer of gloss varnish on his maw?
Dark Apostle: I like your natural looking white. The little red accents will look really good across the whole army.
doc_cthulhu: I like them a lot, the detail you've put into those faces is very impressive.
Ego Ninja: Orcs: Really smooth green skin tone you've got, he looks really mean. Skaven: The poison drips look fantastic, and I like the little accents of red on him. Warriors of Chaos: That rat mount thing is really disgusting, I love it! The bluey stuff on the armour (I forget its name) is very well done, adds that nurgle look without painting it green.
Emperor Norton: I second the skin tone, it looks very good. I also like the red colour you've managed on them. That giant has one big mono brow!
Harvey: Vampires: The metallics are really shiny and good looking, the models a bit small in the picture though. Orcs: They're fluorescent! I think a contrasting bright colour would look fantastic. Empire: Smooth green cloak, I like it.
Hilte2: I really like your colour scheme, very pure, and your simple pronounced paint style complements it really well.
Illuminus79: The blue armour does look cool, your repaints where worth it!
Inquisitor Pariah: I like your unit filler, really adds character. I've always wanted to make up some rules for messengers in game.
Jericho: I really like the gems and your painting style.
juicytomatoes: I like the little conversions you've put in, very creative. I would choose your favourite models from the range and paint them, so that a new fantastic model isn't released just when you finish the mediocre models it replaces.
Kaos: Wow. I don't know what else to say. The most impressive WoC army I've seen. You have mastered that Daemon Prince. Beautiful.
Maglok: Nice! The green and red do look very striking.
Malorian: Nice kroxigors, very furry bases! :P
Matrim_Cauthon: You've succeeded in making them Khornate, very deadly looking.
Paull: So much freehand! There's no way I could do that, but you've got it down, really neat.
Purplebeard: Wow, those dwarfs all together look fantastic, great stuff. Knights of Malal sounds best to me, but they'd all be interesting!
Reddevil18: I like your colour scheme, I think that a wash would do wonders for adding some depth.
Rikk: Really nice burnished looking metallics. And he's standing on a horse! Awesomeness.
Rutgar: Very nice blue, and the army all together looks great!
ScytheSwathe: Very nice white, and the blue metal on the speartips looks really effective.
Solun Decius: What a model, what a paintjob. Such bright colours all working together so well, congrats for pulling it off.
someone2040: Elves: Very bright and shiny, and they contrast with the shadow warriors really well. Beastmen: Very red! I like it. Quite ironic that that is the Standard of Discipline :D Moar Beastmen: You're doing 400 points a month?! Your nuts. The chariot is very nice.
sssk: Thats a lot of gobbos! I like the natural coloured squigs and spiders, I've never been a fan of black spiders. Why the lone yellow squig? :P
Tonberry: Very nice chariot, it has a lovely "sepia" look, and it makes the crew stand out brilliantly. How did you do the snowy bases?

Phew! Keep it up, half way there, thats not bad at all!

08-03-2011, 19:44
ARMY: Skaven: 2000 POINTS (MEN)

UNIT: Screaming Bell

BACKGROUND/THEME: The Yellow Tide of Scritch. Only real theme I have is that I wanted the main color to be yellow, with red and tan/beige secondary colors and I want them to be invading an Imperial city. After looking at the Skaven Heraldry book I've decided I'm going to base my models on Clan Skurvy. Of course I'll have to do some cool conversions and stuff but at least I have a clan for them now!

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight out of the box, mostly. In addition to the kit, I ordered an extra Arch and a few other pieces as bits so that I could magnetize the bell, plague furnace, ogre, plague priest, and plague monks. It's worked out well and for the cost of the model + $15 I have 2 models. Oh and I've also magnetized the Seer so that I could use him as an individual model as well.

PAINTING: Undercoated black then too many colors to count.

BASING: I’m doing a cobblestone look from sheet styrene, I want my horde to be over running an Imperial city.

STILL TO DO: I still need to do the Plague Furnace parts of this model.

HIGHS AND LOWS: The major high to this model was that I got it finished and it looked better than I expected. The low was that I lost the bit for the Seer's hand. He was holding on to the bell by it. I ended up cutting off a plague monk hand and attaching it to the Seer. It actually fits the model better as I can use him as an infantry model now. And another low is that I didn't use a tripod and my pics are a little blurry.

POINTS: 540 decked out with magic (should have bought back a joker, I think)

TOTAL: 1137

Next month... Custom built HPA...Lookout! But I have to admit it's a direct rip-off of someone on these forums... I'll give complete credit for the idea when I post the pics.. Because without him, I would have never had this idea!

08-03-2011, 21:39
sssk: Thats a lot of gobbos! I like the natural coloured squigs and spiders, I've never been a fan of black spiders. Why the lone yellow squig?

They're actually all yellowy brown (bubonic brown), the super yellow one was a prototype earlier in the year. I was going to change him to fit, but I thought I'd done a reasonable paint job, which I probably wouldn't manage again, so I just left him. I think he's probably the squig who was left in the back of the cave a little too long and started to ferment a bit.

As for my comments, I'm quite rushed at the moment (work = pain and death), so I will make a single comment (I did make a huge many thousand word comment last month, so I feel this is relatively fair) at the post which stood out to me the most.

There's a lot of truely amazing stuff coming out now that everyone is in their stride, but I'm afraid there was one piece of work which blew my mind.

I've loved the rest of his TOFP army so far, and it is of course Solun Decius with what I assume will be the first of many arachnaroks in this tale (of course not all from Solun). I'm not even a great fan of the kit (it will no doubt grow on me and then sneak into my army when I'm not looking), but the paint job he's done to such a high standard over such a large model (IN A MONTH!) is incredible. The yellows on its back are my favorite bit I think. very very cool. I'm a little worried though, that it makes the boar boys look like snotlings in the army shot!

Anyway, great work everyone. This thread makes a very welcome break to the monotony of research. Also, it's great that we seem to have got over the massacre which was "January", and people are managing to keep up with painting to such high standards. To those who can't keep the pressure on, for whatever reasons, never fear! There is of course next year's TOFP, or if you're more of a "now and then" painter, make yourself a blog.

Well, now that I've done my speech, I have a little "project" to work on for next month...

09-03-2011, 01:47
Well, I am afraid that I will have to withdraw from the TOFP. My motivation for Daemons has waned. I am finishing up my Empire Army, and then am taking a journey on the dark side (Dark Eldar) for a while. Nevertheless, it was fun to attempt the tale, and I hope everyone still holding on now makes it to the end. In that spirit, here are some comments on everyone’s work this month…

Page 1:
EmperorNorton - You did a nice job tying the colors together on your Maneaters, while still maintaining individuality.
ScytheSwathe – Very clean, nice painting style.
Tonberry – Very nice chariot. I always enjoy the attention to detail when I see gems painted with reflections on high elf armies.
Chicken Pig – I like the armor on the Chaos Warriors. It looks like a Mithril Silver highlight, but I can’t tell the base color. Is it gunmetal or bronze?
Ego Ninja – I am a big O&G fan, although I haven’t gotten the new book yet. The Orc Shaman is nice, but your rat (said with a derogatory sneer) seems to have a little more pop to the color. It might just be the poison that gives it such a nice contrast. I like it.
Sssk – Nice move to the Men’s category, I could not keep up. Well done on getting so much painted so fast. Try out the squig hoppers at least once, you might like them.
Confessor_Atol – Some of the pictures are blurry, so it is difficult to see all the paintjobs. Although, there is one thing the camera cannot hide – bagpipes! LOVE THEM!
Kaos – WOW! Source lighting to great effect!
juicytomatoes - It might be a fun project someday to make an all skeleton army of different beastmen units. You could use either rules to mix it up. As for your final question, well I would paint up as much stuff as you had without buying anymore. If you have more core, then bulk them out so you can start playing with the new rules as soon as they come out.
Illuminus79 – I think the armor turned out very nice, like a NMM effect.
Doc_cthulhu – Nice painting with a lot of good fluff. Great idea taking your time with the Brets, by the time the next book comes out you will already have a good chunk of very difficult painting done, and won’t feel the need to be too rushed.
Someone2040 – I love the freehand, it is very nicely done. Also, I don’t think you can be in the Boys league for any part of your army when you are painting up three of them! It does look like the color scheme matches on your beastmen. Will this be a 3000 point army then?
Ego Ninja – Another multiple army poster. That model for your exalted hero rocks! Very well painted to bring out all that detail. Is that a new Warhammer Forge model?
Sturen – Nice highlighting.

Page 2:
Paull – To do Brets, you had better be willing to freehand. You definitely have that gift.
Harvey – So many armies, so little time. The river trolls are especially good. They even look a little slimy. Is that the flash, or are they coated with gloss?
Malorian – Always check what color you are painting! That said, they turned out well, almost leopard frog like.
Coolwhip1 – Excellend fleshtones.
Hilte2 – Again with the Brets. Again with the freehand. Again with my jealousy by the high level of painting.
Rikk – Old School FTW! I have a fondness for old, old models. Nice to see you bringing them back.
Maglok – The red and green definitely complement one another. The bone may have taken you awhile, but it was worth it. Nicely done!
Jericho – Attention to detail (shading, gems). Very nice!
Dark Apostle – I love the hunting dog ‘counts as’ with the eye patch. I cannot imagine sculpting detail that small.
Inquisitor Pariah – That knight passing the note does look familiar…. Warseer is a great place for ideas. I tried to do some alternating colors on my greatswords and found it very challenging for me. Yours look great.
Purplebeard – I like the differently painted shields. It really gives your army a lot of character.

Page 3:
Solun Decius – I have been following you Arachnarok plog for some time now. It really turned out fantastic! The blending is superb, and the bright brights and dark darks really pop.
Rutgar – Nice clean painting style for the Brets.
Matrim_Cauthon – The orange and green look really good together. Also, very nice shading and smooth blending.
Reddevil18 – Picture makes it a little tough to see the models. Let’s get a group shot in there!
Fechik – The pictures may be a little blurry, but I can still tell that this is one nicely painted model.

Ok, so I'm a little late, but at least I'm not dropping out!

Army - 2000pts + of Ogre Kingdoms

Points so far - 959

Unit - 5 X Ironguts (inc Gutlord)

Points = 260

Highs/Lows - extensive kitbashing, which is fun, but adds a lot of extra detail to the models, which means more time to paint them! The Gutlord is a Heresy Miniatures Ogre, with added GW bits and a bit of greenstuff, to help blend him in to the unit.

Still to do - finish off the detailing, add blood, finish bases with snow and blood.

Next month - The big boss fella himself!

Page 1:
EmperorNorton – Those are some great Ogres. Especially the female one. They are very bright and vibrant, I like them!
ScytheSwathe – Nice looking elves there.. The movement tray is great too!
Tonberry – Those are some of the best white lions I have seen. Those are awesome!
Chicken Pig – Old old Chaos Trolls. They look great not painted in their traditional way. Great work!
Ego Ninja – That has always been my favorite Shaman model. Good job!
Ego Ninja – I love the weeping blade effect! Why are his nails painted red? He going through a phase we don’t know about? Another outstanding model!
Sssk – Those are some really nice looking Gobbo’s. And I love the color scheme for the Squigs. I was going to comment on the lone bright squig but already read your comment about fermenting, awesome!
Confessor_Atol – That miner unit filler is wonderful! The rest of the models are great as well, that one just jumped out at me.
Kaos – I don’t even have words. You , and a few others, are just too amazing for words!
Juicytomatoes – I love the skeletaurs and the dynamic positioning of the classic skeletons
Illuminus79 – Good looking model!
Doc_cthulhu – I love the purple and yellow (gold). That bret knight is great! As are the rest, but that one is just cool.
Someone2040 –Good looking Sea Guard. I love the turquoise and white.
Someone2040 – Also some great work on the Bestigors. Is that banner freehand?
Someone2040 – And once again, great work on the chariot!
Ego Ninja – What the hell kind of creature is that? Is that from Forge World or something?
Sturen – What I like about these elves are the topknots. I just really like the colors you used.

Page 2:
Paull – You’ve got some really nice freehand work on that barding.. I also like the color of the Damsel’s dress.
Harvey – A Wight King? I like the color’s. He’s a bit too small in the frame to get a great look at him. But it looks like you did a great job.
Harvey – Some really mean looking River trolls you got there.
Harvey – Another great model from you!
Malorian – Love the yellow and black!
Coolwhip1 – That’s an impressive model. I love the conversion work. I’ve never painted that Giant, and you say it’s a pain to paint. It looks like it.
Doi – aren’t you one of the threads in the fabric that IS the TOFP? You can’t leave. I understand if you must but your contributions will be missed.
Hilte2 – I’m like the free hand work on the horse.. really nice!
Rikk – a really old Blood Thirster. I think I have that model around here somewhere.. It brings back many memories!
Maglok – I bet you are excited about May! Love your models.
Jericho – That is a great looking dwarf. I love the deep shadows. And the gem on his head. What do you use for a backdrop?
Dark Apostle – Those are nice! And that dog is just cool!
Inquisitor Pariah – That unit filler is just damn cool, I love it.
Purplebeard – I like your dwarfs. I like how the green ties them all together.

Page 3:
Solun Decius – What can I say that every other person hasn’t said.. just amazing!
Rutgar – I’m liking the blue theme of that unit. I like how each unit has a different color theme.
Matrim_Cauthon – nice looking Chaos Trolls. Those bases are really cool too.
Reddevil18 – nice looking chariot.
Fabius Bile – That center Ogre with the table is great! I think that model adds the character to the whole unit! Good job.

I see :D He doesn't look too out of place. Fermented squigs... thats gonna make one odd drink :shifty:

Thank you Sturen ill try a wash when i get a chance :)

No problem, look forward to it :)

I'll reply to comments once a few more have been posted, but thanks to everyone so far!

Hello again everyone.

Just thought I'd post a couple of WIP shots. Comments later this week.

More Shieldmaidens - about half done

I've also bought a few different figures to create some variety for the Shieldmaiden unit - some new and old Reaper ones and a couple from Das Schwarze Auge - a German fantasy range sold by Ral Partha Europe.

This is an old Reaper figure - nice sculpt but too tall. So I've chopped her feet off and am going to remodel them with green stuff. I'm also waiting on a few newer ones :)

Random one in Highland dress - great sculpt, just picked it up because it was different. Might do some Highland Dwarves at some point - you never know!

She is going to be the Dwarven Queen - I'm going to sculpt her a crown, give her a bigger axe and place her with some shieldbearers hehe. She may figure into my TOFP depending upon how far past 2000pts I get. :D

Oh, and before I forget. We're halfway through now, and I'm thinking about which army I am going to for TOFP 2011-12. I want something interesting and different, so here is a list of ideas.

Knights of Malal (the anti-Chaos Chaos), Knights of Law (Chaos but GOOD?), Amazons (would run as Witch-Elf themed DE with loads of monsters and cool stuff), Cthulhu (evil fishmen/horrific alien types led by squid-headed wizards - to count as Lizards or DoC), Pirates, Sea Elves, Gnomes, Halflings, Nippon, Cathay, Norse (loads of barbarians - count as Orcs), or something else (?).

Votes and comments would be appreciated - which army should I run?

10-03-2011, 01:35
First off, thanks for all who gave me suggestions on what to do next about my tomb kings. I finally decided I'll slow down and do one character, which will be the Settra model, but just the model of him, not the chariot. I'm thinking of fielding him as an ordinary TK on foot.

Okay, now, time for comments. I'll start with page 1 and move on to the others when I get the time:

@EmperorNorton: As mentioned in your plog, these look great, especially with the lighting! The dude on the right is my favorite... Urine tax! :D

@ScytheSwathe: Better late than never! Ranked up units take a lot of discipline to do, so don't berate yourself. They're looking great, by the way... so clean and squeaky, yet so terrible to face! ASF with re-rolls... Aaaaarrrggghhh!!!

@Tonberry: Great paintjob on what I consider one of the nicest models out there. Get back into the game, mate! It will inspire the painting. Still, you're lucky you get to play different systems. Must be great fun!

@Chicken Pig: Fearsome-looking trolls there. Is the middle guy a conversion? I don't seem to remember any of them having horns... or am I mistaken?

@Ego Ninja: Nice, neat painting on the shaman. I never figured out what the orc shaman was holding in his hand (the fault of the model, not yours!). It's a staff, yes, but what is it? Deathmaster Snikch is looking great!

@sssk: Welcome, you manly man you! :D Your goblins look absolutely awesome! And so much care put into a horde army... all power to you!

@Confessor_Atol: The blurry pics make it hard to tell, but if the 2nd pic is any indication, you've done a fantastic job on them! Don't miss out painting the base edges though. ;)

@Kaos: It's magical, what you've done with the demon prince  The army shot looks great. Very appropriate mood lighting going on there.

@Illuminus79: Have to agree with you there about painting horses. They're a pain! Nevertheless, you did it and it's looking good. Keep it up!

@doc_cthulhu: the flagellants look great! The knight looks cool too, though, did you miss a spot on the barding of the horse? The front insignia seems to have overflowed into the cloth part of the barding (not sure how to say it).

@someone2040: Wow, you've done a lot of painting this month. Mostly rank and file too! They all look very impressive. Well done!

@Ego Ninja: You again! ;) This new Chaos army looks spectacular! Looking forward to seeing more of them.

@Sturen: Swordmasters are looking good there. Not to worry about being rushed, you can always come back to the gems later.

10-03-2011, 08:47
Quick update from me, will repost with details when I get home:

Empire, 5x Outriders plus champ, mu and Hochland finished (except bases :shifty:)

High Elves, WIP Dragon pics to upload - think rust dragon from D&D and you cant go far wrong :)

10-03-2011, 09:44
This month I'm going to actually make some effort to comment on other people's work as I'm usually too lazy to do so but other people have said nice things to me so it's only fair:

EmperorNorton- Nice skin tone on both the Ogres and the giant
ScytheSwathe- Congratulations on painting all that white
Chicken Pig- I like the way you highlight your metalics
Ego Ninja- That shaman model is one of my favourites, good job
sssk- Well done on getting so much painted and good luck with the new book
Confessor_Atol- Pics don't help alot but looks solid
Kaos- Beautiful army, 'nuff said
juicytomatoes- Nice centaurs, and.... wait for the shiny new toys
Illuminus79- The armour effect looks decent, well done
doc_cthulhu- I really like the blending/highlighting of the red on that knight
someone2040- Again, congrats on all that white and nice freehand on the beastmen's banner
Sturen - Nice highlights on the blue, what's your top layer colour there?
Paull - Sweet freehands on the knights there dude
Harvey- Little undead fella looks cute and a nice vibrant green (without being too bright) on the trolls
Malorian- Well done on making it this month with the kroxigor
coolwhip1- Nice glazes on the skin
Hilte2- Very nice model all round
Rikk- Cool retro mini
Maglok- The green and red really does work, well done
Jericho- Nice, especially the verdigris on the bronze
Dark Apostle- Solid all round
Inquisitor Pariah- Cool unit filler
Purplebeard- The whole unit together looks great
Solun Decius- Very striking, great job
Rutgar- Nice highlights on the blue
Matrim_Cauthon- Stretched skin tone is gross, in a good way
reddevil18- Any scaling problems with the chariot vs. the new plastics?
Fechik- Wood looks good, well done painting so much of it
Fabius Bile- Hitting people with tables is always good

Keep it up everyone.

10-03-2011, 11:18
@sssk: Welcome, you manly man you! :D Your goblins look absolutely awesome! And so much care put into a horde army... all power to you!

Thanks. I'm not really putting that much effort in, once the production line gets running things go a lot faster than you'd imagine (and cunningly getting the best ones in focus and the rubbish ones blurry makes them look better than they really are). I thought I'd finished all of the "horde" aspect of my army (surely 150 night gobbos is enough for any domestic situation!?), but then in a tactics thread Malorian raised the thought of a 100 gobbo horde unit, and now I fear I'll be back to those bleached bone robes before I know it.

Despite that, this month should be a couple of "interesting" units, which are looking fairly central to the background I'm currently contemplating (I'm afraid I don't have any WIP photos, because half of the bits I need are scattered between 2 houses).

sssk- Well done on getting so much painted and good luck with the new book

Speaking of which, I haven't done the "new book" points total for my army yet, but I'm rushed off my feet at the moment, so I think I'll have to keep that for next month. I'll make sure it comes in to approximately the same as it did before.

10-03-2011, 13:04

Unfortunately, this month my first (real) joker. Also, this particular joker gives a hint as to the specifics of my failing. Actually, work was also crazy, so... And I did paint quite a lot but I was SO scared to paint the banner on my Greatswords, that it has completely crippled me and well... I decided to play DF instead.

Hugs and kisses,

10-03-2011, 14:21
EmperorNorton (OK): I reallly like the bright colour scheme. I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of that Ogre lady though.

ScytheSwathe (HE): Lovely - crisp, bright, and clean.

Tonberry (HE): Great model and a lovely paintjob.

Chicken Pig (WoC): Loving the beady yellow eyes on the trolls and the work on the bases. Those warriors look really good too.

Ego Ninja (O&G): Great paintjob - dark and grimy.
Ego Ninja (Skaven): Sleek. I shouldn't admit to liking Skaven, but I'll make an exception.

sssk(O&G): HOORAY! A ray of hope on an otherwise bleak horizon. Welcome to the Mens' category! The orange, cream and yellow could've easily become car crash territory, but you have really pulled it off. Impressive. :)

Confessor_Atol (Dwarves): Lots of Dwarves. Inventive unit filler and good bold figures. Extra points for painting Dwarves!

Kaos (DoC): Just superb. Stunning, in fact.

juicytomatoes (TK): I like that you've made them into a ramshackle force, just plodding along regardless of their missing limbs. Your brass colour is a great btw.

Illuminus79 (Empire): Yeah - Templar Grand Master. All the subtlety of a sledgehammer, which is quite apt, since he's carrying - a sledgehammer!

doc_cthulhu (Empire): Interesting. These guys look more like a disparate band of rogues than a real army, but every model is great.

someone2040 (HE): Meh Elves :S Nice paintjob though, and clever deployment of grey bases to highlight the bright Sea Guard.
someone2040 (BoC): Menacing Bestigors. Again, the grey bases work very well to set off the red. Good use of that chariot model. I like the 'sliding-in' bases idea.

Ego Ninja (WoC): Awesome figure! It certainly helps that you're already halfway in one month! I was secretly thinking of doing the same with Gnomes as Empire - basically an excuse to include my pony riders and have some wizards :D

Sturen (HE): The slightly muted mid-blue was the perfect colour choice.

Paull (Brets): Great figures. Grail Knight 1 is superb.

Harvey (Undead): Simple and bold. I think that doing 'something' every month is the key to this, even if it isn't 200 points.
Harvey (O&G): Trolls - very, very nice.
Harvey (Empire): Full of character - he look like he would fit well with Wood Elves imo.

Malorian (Lizardmen): Zero subtley or tact there - this lot will pack a big punch! You've done 1530pts, so you only need to do 470. You could split the Saurus Cavalry and do 1-2 of those plus a few Skinks/other bits for the next 3-4 months and still be fine on points.

coolwhip1 (WoC): Lovely painting, but I hate that Giant kit with a passion. The gut jaw works well.

Doi: NO - not another one :cries:

Hilte2 (Brets): Excellent Prophetess - really wise colour choice and fine fleur-de-lys. How did you achieve the white?

Rikk (DoC): HAHA nice

Maglok (TK): You use the same photo set-up as me - few sheets of white paper in a random place. Nice shots btw. I really like the catapult.

Jericho (Dwarves): More Dwarves are always welcome. Beautiful gems.

Dark Apostle (Empire): Do you paint for GW? Your painting style is really bright and clean. I love the white colour.

Inquisitor Pariah (Empire): Terrible lighting set-up - almost as bad as mine lol. Your fine unit filler more than makes up for it though.

Solun Decius (O&G): Awesome. It is quite funny like someone else said that this thing is as big as the rest of your army put together! It is a close call between this and Kaos' Daemon for my favourite this month.

Rutgar (Brets): Great job getting so many figures done so quickly. Seriously, you've done about a zillion knights.

Matrim_Cauthon (WoC): The bases really set them off. Good job.

reddevil18 (WoC): Fun unit. The painting looks good, I'd like to see a better picture though please.

Fechik (Skaven): Brilliant painting, brilliant idea to magnetize everything aswell. The GW plastics have improved so much in the last few years, with the Skaven and WE in particular. Its also good to see Skaven because they don't seem to be a popular choice nowadays next to all the WoC, DoC, and Empire.

Fabius Bile (OK): Haha love the guy with the table!

Daniel36: I have heard good things about Dwarf Fortress - I am really keen to try. Is it that good?

And, of course a big question what should I do for the next TOFP? I want to do something interesting and unusual, so with that in mind, ideas so far include: Knights of Law, Knights of Malal, Cthulhu/horrific Fishmen, Amazons, Halflings, Pirates, Sea Elves, Halflings, Gnomes, Araby, Nippon, Norse, Cathay, Chaos Dwarves, Hobgoblins, or something else - what do you all think?

10-03-2011, 15:52
Comments: (Page 1 and 2)

EmperorNorton: That's a good looking unit of maneaters. Glad you decided against the beard on the female one ;)

ScytheSwathe: All that stabby stabby scares my orcs... but then again so do the white lions... Looking great so far!

Tonberry: the tone of the lions skin is perfect, but I feel the hair should have been a different color.

Chicken Pig: The chaos trolls are ugly models, but I like what you did with them.

Ego Ninja: Both the orc and ninja look good. Really like the highlighting on the ninja robe. The nurgle model though... fitting but SO ugly (in a good/bad way).

sssk: Glad to have you in the mens side. The wood on the chukka is really well done.

Confessor_Atol: Bag pipes certainly do fit the dwarfs. Good idea (I might steal it).

Kaos: That conversion is amazing... I don't think I would even mind him casting purple sun on my unit just because the model looks so fitting :D

juicytomatos: Paint what ever you like next. No matter what the new book brings, models you think look cool will still look cool.

Illuminus79: I think a dark wash would do that model a lot of good.

doc_cthulhu: That's a big unit champ. Makes you wonder why all those models have the same armor save... and what the regular guys have a better save than the black orcs... but I'm going off topic. Keep it up!

someone2040: Hurray for khornegors! Please tell me you plan to make a horde of them.

Sturen: Gems look ok to me, and you could always touch them up later if it really bugs you.

Paull: You continue to wow me with your amazing painting.

Harvey: some of your pictures aren't showing for me, but what I can see of the trolls they look right on. You've matched GW's stone technique I see.

Malorian: Pretty pathetic stuff there... you really need to improve...

coolwhip1: Didn't you do this model last month too? at any rate he looks awesome.

Rikk: Awesome model. Old school is always a nice touch.

Maglok: I can't see the pictures.

Jericho: Great looking model. It's only 1 but you obviously put a lot of work into him.

Dark Apostle: Why did you add the eye patch? Seems like a lot of work. Looks neat though.

Inquisitor Pariah: Interesting looking unit filler, although the knight seems out of place in the unit of greatswords.

Purplebeard: Love it, love it, love it. The mix of old and new gives it a great feel. Bucket loads of character in your army.

10-03-2011, 20:40
Hey is there any age range or category applied so as to become a member of this group, and can a student be a part of it.

As said, there isn't, nut we're already half way down the tale. If you can paint very fast, no probs, just join! If you don't paint very fast, just enter, but in the "boys group". Not really boys as in age, but just half the points (100) a month.

If I do end up staying though you better expect lots of characters :p.

As long as you paint stuff, I'm completely fine with it.

I have to use a joker this month.

Seriously, can you post anything more weird than that?

10-03-2011, 23:43
Well done everyone. Here are my comments & replies so far this month.

Page 1:
EmperorNorton (Ogre Kingdoms 1): Good details. The colors on the Paymaster are great. The tinting on the copper gut plate is a great extra detail. Did you forget to clean the Empire Maneater’s weapon before you painted it?

EmperorNorton (Ogre Kingdoms 2): I love the hair on the legs and your skin tones are very smooth. Nicely done.

ScytheSwathe (High Elves): Very clean work. Your painting of shields really carry these rather bland sculpts. Is that your own freehand on the movement tray? I like it.

Tonberry (High Elves): Your lions are about perfect! When I get one of these you will have to tell me how you painted their bodies.

Chicken Pig (Warriors of Chaos): The red on the trolls looks great. I don’t know if you were trying for a glossy look on the yellow/tan parts, or if it’s just the pictures, but I’m not totally sold on it. The bases on the Warriors are a nice detail.

Ego Ninja (Orcs & Goblins): Good clean (for an Orc) paint job. Overall did you gain or lose points in your army total under the new book?

Ego Ninja (Skaven): Nicely done model. My only suggestion would be to shade the poison a little to accentuate the roundness of the drops.

sssk (Goblins): Your colors and quantity continue to amaze me. I love that “unit” of squig hoppers. They look like a disaster waiting to happen. Where did you get that BSB model?

Confessor_Atol (Dwarves): Wow! That’s a lot of whiskers to paint in one month! The unit filler for the miners is brilliant.

Kaos (Warriors of Chaos): Welcome back! I for one have missed seeing your work. WOW! Simply WOW! It looks to me like the only parts you took from Games Workshop are the wings. Fantastic sculpting work again. Also, what is that huge thing in the back of your army? The hounds look very evil indeed.

juicytomatoes (Tomb Kings): Centaur Skeletons. What a great idea! The archer unit looks good too; the armor on them looks very realistic.

doc_cthulhu (Empire): Nice work on everything. The idea to use a Chaos Warrior for your unit champion is pretty cool.

someone2040 (High Elves): The unit looks good. Excellent work on the shields.

someone2040 (Beastmen): They are red. Good blending on the armor to break up the color and add depth. The metal on the weapons looks amazing.

someone2040 (Beastmen): I really like the work you did to make the padding on the yokes look like leather.

Ego Ninja (Nurgle Warriors): Your mount looks vile…which I know is what you were going for. I really like the tarnished look of the armor on the warriors.

Sturen (High Elves): The unit looks pretty good.

Page 2:
Paull (Bretonnian): Again your Knights amaze me! The free hand on the white model is incredible. Keep up the good work.

Harvey (Vampire Counts): Looks good, but you should try to zoom or crop the pictures next time.

Harvey (Orcs & Goblins): Nicely painted. I want to get some of these myself. Will you count these as River Trolls if they put out a box of Stone Trolls in the near future?

Harvey (Empire): Good looking mage. The red of the roses really helps to break up all that green.

Malorian (Lizardmen): I like the way the green shows through the yellow. Will you be doing more to the bases?

coolwhip1 (Warriors of Chaos): You did a wonderful job on all that skin. I think blending all that smoothly would be very difficult. The gut-jaw is a brilliant idea.

Hilte2 (Bretonian): This is one of the prettiest Prophetess’ I have ever seen. You did a great job of making the colors soft yet crisp.

Rikk (Daemons of Chaos): Good blending work throughout the model.

Maglok (Tomb Kings): You managed to take a model that doesn’t usually look that good on the table, and bring out all of its little details. I think the use of green for the ropes is what really makes this model.

Jericho (Dwarves): Excellently done. The gems on this model are very convincing!

Dark Apostle (Empire): I love the idea of the dog for a unit filler. I have been trying to figure out how I can use the four hounds from my Mordhiem warband in my Empire army.

Inquisitor Pariah (Empire): Nice looking unit filler. I thought it looked familiar.

Purplebeard (Dwarves): I really like your Viking Dwarf Army idea. Good job of keeping a cohesive look while adding variety to the unit.

Page 3:
Solun Decius (Orcs & Goblins): Dang! With all those bright colors that model is sure to be a focus of the enemy’s attention from the start. Great blending. It looks like something very deadly in nature. Using true life examples in our painting is such a helpful tool.

Rutgar (Bretonnians): Clean and simple, but very effective work. I really like how you have themed your units to make it clear who belongs where.

Matrim_Cauthon (Khorne): I think they look a little too orange for Khorne. Try washing them with a dark red to fix that maybe?

reddevil18 (Warriors of Chaos): They need to update this model. Good simple paint job though. Did one of the crewmen break in half on you there?

Fechik (Skaven): The yellow of your Grey Seer really helps him stand out on that model. All your hard work defiantly paid off, as you now have an amazing centerpiece model for your army.

Fabius Bile (Ogre Kingdoms): The Gutlord wielding a table is great! Your colors seem a little flat though.

Solun Decius: Thank you. As a correction to my post, I will have a Mounted Warrior Priest joining the Cannon and its crew.

Sturen: Thanks. I was honestly getting very annoyed with all the repaints, but I am glad I stuck to it, in the end.

jason: Sorry to see you go. Thank you for your vote of confidence.

Fechik: Thank you.

juicytomatoes: Indeed they are, and I have a lot more horses to paint still. I shall push forward regardless.

Tonberry: Thank you. I was hoping for more than just decent…but I’ll take it.

Purplebeard: How fitting is it then that he will be leading the ‘Hammer Unit’ of my army?

Malorian: A dark wash, you think? Even though my goal was a white/blue pearl effect?

...and breath! Whew!

11-03-2011, 03:54
Thanks all, for the comments and the suggestions. I think I'll go the middle road and do up one tomb king :) Not too much commitment, yet something is done to get some points for the next month's ToFP.

Page 2 Comments!

Paull: Great freehand work! That's a lot of work put into the barding.

Harvey: Nice, neat painting going on there with the wight and the wizard. Always great to see ole school minis, so keep 'em comin :) And the trolls look fantastic! I love those miniatures and you've done a great job on them.

Malorian: Well done on crossing the finishing line for this month then! The kroxies are lookin fearsome!

coolwhip1: The giant is a winner! I can imagine the pain in the painting but it's well worth it! The open wound in his gut is very well done and the model he's holding on to is great! Is it a conversion or does it come in the box? The artfully placed giant finger in the *ahem* middle *ahem* is hilarious. Is the poor unfortunate yelling in pain because of that?

Hilte2: Amazingly precise freehand, mate. Simply amazing...

Rikk: Always characterful to stand on a casualty of a mate's army eh? ;) Well done on finishing a huge model (always not an easy thing). Pity the photos a little unclear though.

Maglok: Fellow king! Your catapult is the envy of the Kingdom of Um, where the Sun-Doesn't-Shine and The-Bloody-Crocodiles-Are-Always-Hungry(that's what I've named my tomb kings' territory, just in case you misunderstand)! Great job on what I consider a difficult model to paint!

Jericho: Fantastic paint job on the Dwarf!

Dark Apostle: There's a reason why I'm a big fan of your plog... and you never fail to please. Brilliant! ;)

Inquisitor Pariah: Absolutely love what you did with the unit filler. Very creative, very inspiring! I want to do all sorts of things like this with my army now...

Purplebeard: Fantastic looking unit of stunties there! Now there's one horde I don't want to get stuck in with...

11-03-2011, 08:25
In a daring display of....... daring.... I actually managed to paint the banner I was so afraid of doing, and I actually REALLY like how it turned out. The unit is still not finished, but it is getting there. I might even be able to do more work this month so I can make up for the Joker.

Hugs and kisses.

11-03-2011, 09:11
sssk (Goblins): Your colors and quantity continue to amaze me. I love that “unit” of squig hoppers. They look like a disaster waiting to happen. Where did you get that BSB model?

The BSB is actually the night goblin shaman with a sickle and a snotling on his head. I didn't like the snotling, so took his head off (once again, using only a penknife and a pin drill!) and replaced it with the head from a spider rider.

Then I took the banner from the dark elf cold one knights (don't ask why I had a box of those lying around) and again, very carefully using a pin drill I pinned it to the top of his staff. Then (once again) using a pin drill I pinned the top of the BFSP shaman's staff (the "puppet" thingy) onto the top of that.

To finish him off I gave him a cutlass arm from the empire free company. I'm quite proud of him, though I think the paint job didn't turn out as good as I'd hoped. Also now that goblin BSBs can have shields, I think he'll end up with some form of buckler on the sword arm.

I'd also like to do some form of design on his banner, but like Daniel36, I'm terrified of ruining what I have, and I don't know what design I'd do anyway. Also I think a design might be a bit too technical for a gobbo army. Crudely made metal and scraps of random cloth are the goblin way!

Regarding the squigs, if I can find a big boss on a giant squig cheap enough, I think I'll get one of those and then see how the unit gets on, because they've always been a favorite of mine, just a shame they're not too good nowadays (I'll find a way to make them good!).

Comments and replies! My apologies if Imissed someone, tried to comment on everyones work.

Page 1
EmperorNorton: Nice skin on both ogres and giant. The rust on the metal looks really great. But the veins on the inside of the giants legs - makes me shudder
ScytheSwathe: Smooth and clean white. I like the bases.
Tonberry: A little hard to tell from the small pics, but it looks like solid painting. The gems look great.
Chicken Pig: Don't think I've seen those trolls painted red before. Looks really good (although I find the sculpts pretty ugly), also the pale chests/stomachs complements the deep red really well.
Ego Ninja: Great job on the characters. The green poison on snikschs knives looks suitably ... well ... poisonous. The copper/verdigris on the chaos knights looks really striking.
sssk: I really like the skintone on the gobbos on squigs/spiders. It seems somewhat paler than the green on the bsb/big boss, but it could be the photos.
Confessor Atol: I have to agree on the quality of the pictures - not so great. On the other hand I also agree with your opinion of the bag piper - he looks fantastic!
Kaos: Stunning!I just love the eerie look of the big daemon. The army shot looks great, and the colour of the dogs skin is really nice.
juicytomatoes: Lol! Great idea to make the resemble undead centaurs, and the conversation between the bowmen is hillarious.
Illuminus79: The armour looks great, but if I were to suggest any improvements, I'd say give the bronze and gold areas a wash of Devlan Mud for some extra depth.
doc_cthulhu: Solid job all around. The flagellants and greatswords look great, so does the giant champion. Is the axe on the knights shield freehand?
someone2040: Looking good, and I suppose they will look even better once you get around to flocking the bases.
Sturen: The metallics look nice, and I like the deep blue on the crests and banner.

Page 2
Paull: Great attention to the details. I like the blue on the lord - how did you achieve that?
Harvey: It's a small picture of the wight, but the painting looks suitably "old style" for this mini. The trolls look good, but I think they could benefit from some more contrasting colour.
Malorian: SOlid job, I'm no fan of bases all covered in static grass, but that's just my opinion. I think some stones or branches/bushes would make them more interesting though. How about adding some clump foliage?
coolwhip1: Really great skin tones! And the metallics look ace.
Hilte2: Looks great, good balance between the white/blue yellow(ish) areas.
Rikk: Looks good and I suspect it will look even better when the base is finished.
Maglok: I can understand why you would get bored with all the bone you have to paint - but it looks good, and the red and green really makes for welcome breaks from all the white.
Jericho: Really really nice! The bronze lloks fantastic, so does the gemstones, and the tatoo is way cool!
Dark apostle: Aww, what a cute dog!
Inquisitor pariah: Nice unit filler.
Purplebeard: That's a nice unit of old goodies!

Page 3
Solun Decius: Great spider, love the design on the carapace and the transition on the front legs and head!
Matrim_Cauthon: Looks good, especially the dark metallics.
reddevil18: Looks like a solid job, a bit hard to tell from the photos but the red seems to be a nice, dark hue.
Fechik: The smoke is really nicely painted, looks very realistic.
Fabius bile: Very imaginative to use the wheel caps from the STank as shields!

Solun Decius: Thanks a lot!
Sturen: Glad you like them, I agree on the red - it makes the otherwise pretty dull scheme work very well.
jason: Commenting on everyone as you drop out - that's leaving with style! Glad you like the patch, I think it's in line with the bizzare side of the WH background. The "S" is, of course, for Sigmar.
Fechik: Thanks!
Tonberry: Thank you.
Purplebeard: Thanks man, no, I don't work for GW (sometimes wish I did, but I'm not convinced it's a good idea to have your hobby for a living - though it would certainly give me some more time for painting...)
Malorian: The dog was originally intended to go with a Mordheim witch hunter warband that I never finished, so I paid extra attention to tweak every mini to give it extra character in line with the artwork for said game (and the whole WH world, really).
Illuminus79: Glad you like the dog. Dogs can go anywhere really, bit why not throw them in a free company unit?
juicytomatoes: Always glad to please the audience :)

Could I use a third joker for orcs and goblins for this month please?
Massive lack of motivation has resulted in little being done, I think I have enough to post, but so much going on in life has left me with little time to get much painting done in the last 2-3 weeks.
Not even the new army book has motivated me into getting stuff finished.
2 job interviews down however so I can get back to normality.

12-03-2011, 15:43
Better late then never for me I suppose.

Playing another Joker for my High Elves. Casting isn't going so well yet. I have prepared 4 eagle substitutes for this month to avoid getting too far behind.

For my Orcs and Goblins.

This month is kinda a cop out. No big spider. No big units. Just two giants and and an orc!

Points: 406 using the new rules, giving me a total of 1002 points.

Painting: The usual method for individual models. The single orc was a test mini, not for the color scheme, but for the spray paint I bought to make painting big units easier (as I really need to start hammering on them to get anywhere). Its a Satin, which usually would not work at all, but with the dip method and Matte Varnish, it works pretty well. Yay for saving time!

The Giants are from Descent. For some reason they reminded me of Mario and Luigi, so one got green overalls and the other red. The army colors are present in some of the details. I like these guys. Their faces remind me of really bearded goblins.

Highs and Lows: Lows for this month have been lots of work. However, the strenuous part of one job is ending next week, so the next month should be pretty productive. Big low is making the mold for my first casting. I messed it up once, the humidity here makes it take extra long to cure, and now I can't find my resin. Highs is actually working on my dungeon terrain for the tale of terrain builders!

12-03-2011, 19:32
Oh my God, it's finally here. Warhammer Forge is taking orders for the Landship!

The real question is can I afford $180 right now for a Stank equivalent, when I already have a sealed plastic one in the closet. Depending on what happens in the next few days I might find myself very very very distracted from the units I'm supposed to be working on. As per usual.

13-03-2011, 04:17
Oh this looks nice, can I join in with pictures of my army, I am a damn slow painter so I cant post monthly but can I just show? :)

13-03-2011, 04:21
Just for a small hint off the army, it's leaders.

13-03-2011, 04:33
Dawi : 2000 POINTS (MEN)

Organ Gun:

Army so far:

13-03-2011, 04:34
Hey Braad, could I please bump my Lizzies up to the mens draw? I'm getting more done than I thought I would.

Lizardmen : 1000 POINTS (Boys)

UNIT: Skink Cohort

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversion at all, I used a spare Skink from my Stegadon(EoTG) for the standard bearer though, not sure how I'll do the musician.

PAINTING: Green skin same as the rest of my Skinks, A stone colour for the weapons.

BASING: Sand. Black basecoat, then a very heavy vermin brown drybrush.

STILL TO DO: Just need to finish the basing. And do the eyes I just noticed I havn't finished.

Next month: Some more skinks for the cohort I think.

Army so far:

And a sneak peek of something still to come!

13-03-2011, 12:44

UNIT: Maxx Ree'bo, Slann Mage-Priest

BACKGROUND/THEME: I'm not a big fan of the GW colour scheme, so I decided to use more natural colours for my Lizardmen, led by Slann Mage-Priest Maxx Ree'bo (sans keyboard),

BUILD/CONVERSION: Model is staight out of box, base is constructed from various materials, including a beetle from the plastic Fanatics box.

PAINTING: Enchanted blue with white added for highlights. ice blue for his belly.
All metal is dwarf bronze washed with devlan mud and highlighted with more dwarf bronze.

BASING: Sand painted Calthan Brown, drybrushed with Dheneb Stone and washed with Devlan mud. Then I glued some static grass on and painted the sides Orkhide Shade.

STILL TO DO: His palanquin.

HIGHS AND LOWS: This is easily my favourite miniature in the Lizardman range and has huge choice in colour schemes. I wanted to get the Stegadon painted for this month but events have conspired against me.

POINTS : Half finished Slann with magic items etc 450pt total so 225pts for this month.

TOTAL POINTS : 1029 in total and 1 Joker used.

DICE ROLL : 1 twice in a row now :shifty:

I'm not pulling a joker on my High Elves just yet, I still have some time to pull something out of my ****.

13-03-2011, 22:25
Ok, comments time.

Page 1:

@EmperorNorton: Great looking stuff this month mate! Espicially like those maneaters.

@SyctheSwathe: Nice Elves man, well done.

@Tonberry: Sweet chariot, very very nice.

@Chicken Pig: Great Trolls, and it's nice to see someone who chops the horns of their chaos warriors, I think they look better without them.

@Ego Ninja: Really nice Shaman, I love that mini and you've done a great job on him. Awesome Snikch as well. I've put you new army in here too, very very nurgley, looks properly diseased mate, well done.

@sssk: Awsome gobbos! I really like your greenskins green skin.

@Confessor_Atol: Sweet Dawi mate! I think I'm stealing that unit filler idea, although that means I'll have to get a 3rd regiment of miners.

@Kaos: Dogs look great and that Daemon prionce is something else mate, awesome work.

@juicytomatoes: Great TKs, really good idea for the skellitaurs you pulled that ideas off well mate.

@Illuminus79: Well done, I do like that mini.

@doc_cthulu; Awesome stuff mate, great clean colours.

@someone2040: Really nice looking seaguard, they did a good job with that box set. Awesome bestigor, they do look very khorney. Good job on that chariot too.

@Sturen: Very nice swordmasters man, look great.

Page 2:

@Paull: Great damsel, one of my fav minis GW have done. Nice grail knights too and that lord is pretty cool too.

@Harvey: Nice wight, it's great seeing the older minis that pop up in these tales. Great green on those trolls. I like that wizard kit, you can do so much with it.

@Malorian: Great Kroxigor, the green showing through isn't too bad. Are you goiung to run them as a regiment of 5? or split some off for skink chorts to use?

@coolwhip1: Awesome giant mate! It looks fantastic.

@Hilte2: Very very nice damsel, looks so clean and bright.

@Rikk: There ain't no school like the old school! great thirster.

@Maglok: Great catapult, it looks very weathered and worn.

@Jericho: My fav runesmith mini, I did mine in the last tale. And truth be told I had the mini for years and it was only in the last tale I think I noticed the huge forearm, when it was pointed out to me.

@Dark Apostle: Great use of the dog, it all looks very well painted.

@Inquisitor Pariah: Awesome work, love that unit filler. Isn't it from some artwork from the 6th ed empire army book originally?

@Purplebeard: Great Dwarfs! so well done.

Page 3:

@Solun Decius: I loved seeing the wip shots you gave us, and now it's done it looks even better than I thought it would!! awesome work mate!

@Rutgar: Great looking brets mate, the only thing I'd say is with that much blue they kind of meld together and i can't quite pick out the individual knights as well as could be. They still look fantastic though.

@Matrim_Cauthon: Another unit of good looking chaos trolls :) Don't worry mate, they look very khornate IMHO.

@reddevil18: cool chariot, you going to put it on a bigger base? I made some up by gluing smaller bases together on some thin card to give them strength.

@Fechik: Great bell, good idea with making a seperate version of the grey seer. I'll be doing that for my priest when I get another stegadon.

@Fabius Bile: Cool Ogres, I love the guy with the table. Is that the heresy one you mentioned?

Page 4:

@SamVimes: Great paint job on those giants.

Page 5:

@Fanny Crowbar: Awesome looking Slann, that blue is great! And I'm stealing your bronze too, I like the look of that.

Keep up the great work everyone!!

13-03-2011, 23:11
@sssk: Awsome gobbos! I really like your greenskins green skin.

Dark apostle was commenting on skin too. Just to say, my night gobbos have emerald green skin, with a few highlights. I did the common/forest gobbos (and squig hoppers) using bleached bone with a few layers of thrakka green (green wash in old money) which I think is working much better, but I'm not sure if I can bring myself to go back and repaint the skin of near enough 150 gobbos.....

Anyway, how's everyone getting on this month? It seems about "work in progress" time.

For me, so far I've painted 7 wolves (as in literally the wolves, not the riders)bleached bone, and painted a single nasty skulker model, who is going to be a big boss. Didn't seem worthy of a photo. At least there's still 17ish (can't be bothered doing maths/looking at calendar) days left to get some serious painting done, but there's no way this month will be a repeat of my previous bumper painting marathon. On the plus side, I've been home this weekend, and picked up something all together bigger, tougher, and more prone to vomit on things, so that's probably next month's models ready to go.

13-03-2011, 23:19
I've been meaning to take a better picture for the past two weeks, but since I haven't come around to that so far I guess it's not happening. So here goes:

Army: High Elves

UNIT: 20 Archers including full command

BACKGROUND/THEME: The High Elf garrison of the Citadel of Dusk at the southern tip of Lustria.

STILL TO DO: Various details.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Too many details to get them all done in time, obviously.

POINTS : 245 (total: 1513)

Thanks to everybody who has commented on my Ogres.
I'll try to post some comments myself and answer individually to comments made on my stuff, but I'm not sure when/if I come around to it.

13-03-2011, 23:49
Better Pics!!! and WIP....

So I'm waiting a couple more days until I comment seeing that there a few stragglers waiting to post.

In the mean time... I took real pictures with a real digi-cam!

First, the WIP...

a scoped cannon, to snipe your wizards!

beefed up quarller unit.

Now the good stuff

13-03-2011, 23:51
and since people are saying nice things about it, here's a better pic of the miner filler

and the unit, still in need of proper basing.

14-03-2011, 00:00
@Confessor_Atol: Lol, nice sniper cannon...:D

My Dwarf Lord is coming along nicely, the Skinks not so much, in fact I havn't even started them yet...:S. I'd better get a wriggle on I guess.

@EmperorNorton: Those are some pink Elves mate! Looks great, such a striking scheme, they'll certainly stand out.

14-03-2011, 01:42

Comments on what's been posted so far. Dice roll 1.

Page 1:

@Tonberry: Some nice metals there - crisp delineation of detail but still keeps the metallics rich.

@Kaos: Lovely stuff. Excellent OSL there

@juicytomatoes: Nice work on the bones - again, good rich colours, but the detail's all picked out. I'd stick with your plan - you can always sell off the units you want to use newer models for, as lots of folks will want to get into the new army.

@doc_cthulhu: Really like the state troopers - lots of character there

@Harvey: Looks good. Old school

@Fanny Crowbar: Love that electric blue on the slann

14-03-2011, 06:46
Seems like fewer posts every month :( As always, congrats to everyone who is still on schedule, or those freaks of nature who are ahead!

I think Solun and Dark Apostle tied for my favorite unit entries of the month. The hunting dog idea is super cool, and the subtle conversion on the model is excellent. Solun's Araknarok is probably the brightest I've seen so far, the color just explodes out of those front legs. Very cool effect :)

Anyway, I feel I have to say it again, but thanks to everyone for the encouragement, comments, and for setting an example by being much better army painters than I am. This is a Herculean effort for me, working on the same projects every month instead of following my usual "bringe for a bit then not pick up a brush for a month" style.

There's two other things I would like to mention at this point.

1) I have been toying with the idea of a gaming community oriented magazine/blog for a while now. A short while ago I finally pulled the trigger and launched something on Wordpress. The blog can be found by clicking this little link (http://immaterium.wordpress.com). The main reason for the blog is to host articles & discussion of community focused issues, such as showcasing various gaming clubs, how to run successful events, etc. I am planning on writing something on motivation & support when doing army painting, so naturally the ToFP will be mentioned :D

2) I'm trying to decide how to tackle the armies as we move into the second half of the year. The Dwarfs remain 10x more fun to work on than the Empire, and it actually is starting to feel like punishment when I am working on the Averlanders :p I am starting to consider plowing through the Dwarfs and getting them past 1k, so I'm not sitting there wishing I were painting them instead. That might increase my chances of staying on schedule with Empire figs. Who knows, it might be worth a try :p

I'd like to hear what you guys think of my big stupid plan to throw all the regular timing out the window on this. If I finished up all the units I started for the Dwarfs, the army will total around 1300 pts or so, well above the stated 1k goal for the project. Then it would be ~3-4 months of summer to work on Empire. Either way, I'm still hoping to paint a minimum of 2k by the time the year is up. Just how much of that is Dwarfs, Empire, and/or even Khemri still remains to be seen.

14-03-2011, 12:45
Hi everyone,

I'm going to have to play a joker this month, as I haven't really had much time for painting.

And painfully, March has been the same and April is shaping up to be a bad month too, unless the Spanish airport strike goes ahead and I'm unable to go to visit the in-laws :shifty:

Anyway, I'll make sure to come back to comment on as much work as I can over these months, and if I have to drop out of the tale I'll try my hardest to buy myself back in.

14-03-2011, 16:29
Dark Elves : 2000 POINTS (Men)

UNIT: DE Witch Elves, Sorceresses and (still) nearly finished Hellebron

BACKGROUND/THEME: Beast Masters of Kar Karond. The catchers have under the command of Lady Iyrrane have never failed to bring in and break a beast. They currently have their sights set on the Tyrant of a wandering Ogre tribe who have strayed down from the Chaos Wastes near Ghrond (my regular opponent). Despite three attempts so far at bringing them in, the Ogres are not giving up. in response, Iyranne has pledged her forces to the cause of House Hyron if they aid her in a fourth assault. Aided by the family, along with their connections to the Covenent, the Ogres should be easy pickings...

BUILD/CONVERSION: Simple conversion from DE Witches, simply clipping off splinter pistols and mounting them on 20mm square bases

The Witches are an old vampire model (Nefereta or something like that) and a Supreme Sorceress with the staff removed and more magical energy sculpted (because she miscast a lot in games)

PAINTING: Trying to keep a limited palette to tie them together, but still let them look like individuals. Used browns and reds as unifying colour.

BASING: Sand. Black basecoat, then simply drybrushing skull white, then scorched brown for borders

STILL TO DO: Still need to do details on the lot of them and finish up the movement tray, as well as actually sit down one night and finish Hellebron

HIGHS: seeing these conversions I've been planning since November take shape

LOWS: My mind wandering to other projects, meaning i rushed these at the last minute - i would have had more Beast Masters if I had time

POINTS THIS MONTH: combined with the points remaining from Hellebron over the last few months, it's about 250-350 points, depending on magic items on the Sorceresses

Next month: Actually finish Hellebron, Cauldron of Blood, more Beast Masters

Fabius Bile

Ok, comments time!

@EmperorNorton - Cool Maneaters - difficult to paint? Tell me about it, I'm painting my Tyrant right now!

@Kaos - That Daemon Prince is awesome! I love the OSL, it is very well done indeed. It is great to see something so original, and it fits so well with your amazing army!

@Ego Ninja - Love the Nurgle army, really like the rust and verdigris combination on the warriors, and the Exalted Hero - is that a Forgeworld piece?

@Paull - great stuff as usual, love the lord figure (looked up the Gamezone Knights, got a few ideas for the next tale!)

@Solun Decius - Wow, you really did that kit justice! That beats the pants off of the British GW stores efforts that I've seen so far.

@Fanny Crowbar - That is the best colour scheme I've ever seen on a Slann - he looks truly magical!

and in response to some comments....

@Illuminus79 - fair point, the colours are flat at the moment, but as I pointed out in my entry, they aren't finished yet!

@Perplexiti - Yes, the chap with the table is the Heresy Miniatures Ogre.

14-03-2011, 22:01
SamVimes (Orcs & Goblins): The Orc looks pretty good to me. The idea of Mario and Luigi giants cracks me up.

perplexity (Dwarves): Looks metal. Well done. I take it you had the crew done before? The army is coming along nicely.

perplexity (Lizardmen): Very natural looking colors. I really like the large scales.

Fanny Crowbar (Lizardmen): Maxx Ree’bo! :D That’s awesome! And your paint job is worthy of the name.

EmperorNorton (High Elves): I think it’s very courageous of you to paint them pink. It is a very striking color and really sets them apart from the normal White & Blue we see too much. Kudos to you.

Khorneguy (Dark Elves): Good idea using the 40K models for your Witches. I can’t wait to see your finished Hellebron.

@Dark Apostle: I may look into a light wash. Thanks for the insight.

@perplexiti: Thank you.

@Jericho: What do you have planned still to do for your Empire? I found that making a schedual has really helped me stay on task. Granted I have taken short breaks to work on my High Elves or Blood Angels, at least it keeps me focused on what I need to reach my goal each month.

@Fabius Bile: My bust for not reading your post. I apologize. I just got busy commenting…there was so much work to look at.

Almost done...about to try to make the axe blade look like it is made of ice.
I think it turned out okay.

Now to focus on his steed, the cannon & its crew.

14-03-2011, 22:27

Yup, did the crew last month, or maybe the month before. That priest of Ulric's looking good man.

14-03-2011, 22:38
Army: Lizardmen

UNIT: 2 salamanders plus crew and ten Skink Skirmishers

STILL TO DO: Lots of things bases still to do. I am intending to get these done by the end of the month

HIGHS AND LOWS: Not a lot this with this lot, but I am facing a lack of motivation for this months project. A second stegadon.

I did take the army out for their first game. It was a loss but they took a lot of their enemies down. It was the two units of minotaurs that undid me.

POINTS : 220 (total: 1500)

Sorry about the bad photos they were taken on my Iphone and has somehow managed to make my highlights look really blocky.

14-03-2011, 22:50
Man i feel sucky for not commenting but i am bogged down by just about anything but this hobby! I will give everyone a comment instead of a diceroll since i think there are so few of us left. I will start with one page and take a new one when i can.

So for page one comments!

EmperorNorton- I love them ogres and the giant is well done.
ScytheSwathe- Brilliant use of posing. Makes the unit live.
Tonberry-Beutiful Chariot and the snow is goodlooking.
Chicken Pig- Not a fan of the troll models but you made them look badass!
Ego Ninja- Nice characters, i like the skaven the most. The orc might need something to pop a bit more? Wicked green eyes or glowing staff perhaps.
sssk- Nice job, i like the use of yellow as a theme on the army.
Confessor_Atol- Good looking dwarfs, will have to look at them finished too!
juicytomatoes- Cool idea on them skelleton centaurs!
Illuminus79- Good job but i feel i would add wash to get depth too.
doc_cthulhu- Very cool stuff, i like the flaggelants the most!
someone2040- Nice looking units there! A bit of contrast i must say hehe.
Ego Ninja- WOC. Wow you been busy! Very nice painting.
Sturen- Good looking elves, will look forward to them bases done.

Ok thats it for tonight. Gotta burrow myself into my bed dreaming of naked goblins massaging Grimgor backside. Mmmm....

15-03-2011, 07:36
As long as you paint stuff, I'm completely fine with it.

It may have taken me several days more than I intended but I managed to finish the handful of paint jobs I needed to get done and base them so you can expect photos of about 900pts worth of models (all three of them :p) tomorrow since I've got assignments to occupy the rest of my night.

I would have gotten things done sooner if I hadn't forgotten how much work goes into snow bases.

15-03-2011, 18:48

Why the silly face? :p
Thanks to us you just finished stuff!

15-03-2011, 19:30
Baggers: Nice choice of colors. The salamander looks great, though you may want to retouch his eye a little.

@perplexiti: Thank you.

@Kaos: Several people have said similar. Do to these comments I have gone back and looked the model & pictures over again. I now see what you all mean and will try to throw a light wash onto many parts of this model when I get home...tomorrow.

15-03-2011, 22:27
With nothing to post atm, I'm out of the tale. I have stuff on the go, so there's always a possibility that I'll be able to buy my way in at a later date.

All the best to everyone, and to all those still in the tale, keep up the good work!

16-03-2011, 05:07
Why the silly face? :p
Thanks to us you just finished stuff!

Well you were already in on what I've been meaning to bring back to the TOFP so it might not have been odd to you that I was doing snow bases yet I'm entered with Ogres that dont have them ;).

ARMY: Ogre Kingdoms (Boys)

UNIT: Butcher with Bangstick + other items

BACKGROUND: "This is my BANGSTICK!" Need I say more?

PAINTING/CONVERSION: Nothing out of the ordinary painting wise but conversion wise I bulked him out with GS and made the Bangstick with plastic rod.

STILL TO DO: Nothing.

HIGHS: Staying in the TOFP.

AND LOWS: Only managing it by the skin of my teeth. And the pictures. Again...

POINTS : 180

16-03-2011, 05:40
Well If I'm going to be stupid enough to try and keep up with the TOFP despite my lack of time I may as well turn stupidity into idiocy .

ARMY: Goblins (Boys)

UNIT: Grom the Paunch of Misty Mountain Gutrot, Merchant King of the Wolf Lands

BACKGROUND: A rather enterprising goblin, Gutrot took to buying and selling the loot won from raids on merchant caravans making the trek through The Dark Lands. Overtime and through several other cunning methods (Face-Eater Squigs in bedrolls, feeding rivals to the wolves or the ever popular stab-in-the-back-when-he-isn't-looking) he rose to amass a great wealth and obtain a great amount of power and influence in The Wolf Lands

PAINTING/CONVERSION: AoW Goblin King + AoW Netherhound + HE Chariot + paper banner

STILL TO DO: Base rim. Decide on how to paint the banner.

HIGHS: Getting back into my Goblins.

AND LOWS: Taking six months to bring them into this TOFP. And the pictures, yet again.

POINTS : 285

UNIT: Skarsnik, Warlord of the Eight Peaks Wurrz'd, Great Shaman of The Howling Rock

BACKGROUND: Born with an affinity for both beasts and Da Great Green, Wurrz'd has taken up residence within The Howling Rock. The plains around the rock have always been residence to vast congregations of wolf packs but local Goblin tribes attest that since Wurrz'd's occupancy there is another, different, howling that can be heard when the green, second moon can be seen in the night's sky. Not even the most curious amongst their number has ever dared approach The Howling Rock when the new howl can be heard on the wind.

PAINTING/CONVERSION: Skarsnik (with a GS staff) on a HE chariot

STILL TO DO: Base rim. Find the crewman model that went walkabout...

HIGHS: Getting back into my Goblins.

AND LOWS: Taking six months to bring them into this TOFP. And the pictures, yet again.

POINTS : 330

TOTAL POINTS: 615 (so in one month my Goblins have got more points than my Ogres...)

Well, this was supposed to be finished this month, but I am getting there!! Just a bit more work to properly finish them. The lettering on the banner is going to be redone a bit, no worries, and I need to do the finishing up, but anyways, this is my WiP for next month then!

@ Doi
Good. Very good!

@ Daniel36
Nice unit! Looking forward to putting those points in the tables.

16-03-2011, 23:36
Doi, I LOVE that conversion.

I always wanted to use that there headed hound for something, and acting as 3 wolves is a perfect idea.

@Emp norton- very solid painting, and those are some of my favorite models in the current GW range. Great work, and I love the inbread albion giant. I remember when those came in boxes of 2.

@ScytheSwathe- they looked good in Jan, and they look good today too!

@Tonberry- Nice gritty, but not too gritty high elves, great basing work!

@Chicken Pig- Those are the first Chaos trolls I've ever liked. Really good coor choice and paint work. The warriors are nice too!

@Ego ninja-solid orc wizard, but I think he could use some red dags and such to really make him stand out. Your Snikch, with the green and red accents really pops! Great work

@sssk- oh the joys of watching a boy become a man....congrats! Great production. Good quality.

@Kaos- The hounds look great and natural, in an unnatural chaosy sort of way! Your deamon prince, I'm speachless. The sculpting is great, the color work is fantastic, and full of life and energy.

@Juicytomatoes- The Skeletors are fun. More bowmen are always better. Nice bone effect you've achieved.

@Illuminus- Nice grandmaster, Well done. Again, its good to see old models done justice with a good paint job

@doc_Cthulhu- Nice paint work, the variety of models is fun too. The flages have great deapth and realism

@Someone- Those are really nice sea guard. Great painting, but I feel like the basing takes away just a bit, maybe too dark. That's just my opinion. Still good work. I really like the bestagors, the bases on those are perfect, and compliment the feel of the models. Nice chariot too!

@Sturen- quality sword masters, clean crisp and well painted. The red really helps them stand out.

@Paull-I like the hearaldry on your knights, and the damsel looks great. Nice use of gamezone models too!

@Harvey- good wight king, A+ for ol' school. The trolls are top notch too! And a wizard to boot. Aces

@Malorian- Krox in skinks are the new 8th ed black. These guys will beat face!

@cool whip- great skintone on you giant. Realy quality work. Thanks for posting him!

@Hilte2- The heraldry detail is really nice and even. The shading on the model as a whole is fantastic.

@Rikk-No skool like the ol' skool. Nice thirster buddy.

@Maglok- AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA crash, splat. That the sound it makes. Good screamer

@Jericho- Fantastic paint work. great shading and highlights. Nice Nice Nice

@Dark Apostle- Always fantastic to see your work. Subtile blends, just high quality.

@Inquisitor P- Great unit filler, adn great swords. those will look good on the table. I like the yellow too.

@Purplebeard- a fellow dwarf. So much individuality in your work. just fantastic. The shields make me happy

page 3

@Solun Decius- Sooo much work, sooo big! I really glad you shared the process while you made this. Your whole army is looking great

@Rutgar- Good looking bretts you have there. Lots of horses.

@reddevil- nice chariot.

@Fechik- Nice bell man, great contrast, and the yellow on the grey seer looks tops!

@Fabius- Great conversion work man. I love the lord swinging the table.

@Matrim C- A second unit of chaos trolls! I used to detest these models, but you guys are making them look great!

@perplexiti-that is a massive dwarven throng you have going! Great work on the basing, and the sheer scope of it. You lizards are looking ace too

@Fanny C-That is one stunning toad. I love the blue and the spots.

stick a fork in me, I'm done....

18-03-2011, 10:13
traveling around australia this month so have had very little time to paint. will hopefully catch up soon...although im returning to northern ireland in april so we ll see.

19-03-2011, 12:46
Unfortunately I too am going to have to throw in the towel :( I've jumped on the GK bandwaggon and have rediscovered a passion for all that round based nonsence!

Before I go, here is a look at what I managed to get done last month and why I'm packing it in...

19-03-2011, 14:35
@Vaiuri - you could just do both

19-03-2011, 16:06
I'm a bit too flighty to stick to a decent schedule I'm afraid :( Rest assured I will certainly pick up my elves and Empire again in the future, I just need to get this Grey Knight thing out of my system! Coupled with an overwhelming need to turn an Arachnarok into a Tervigon it may be a good few months before I pick up where I left off!

Ofc, if I happen to start again before this tale ends and have a surge of painting its possible I'll have my armies done by the end of the tale anyway! Still, I do feel I'm taking the pi$$ by not painting what I commited myself to do, but I shall lurk around and keep an eye on everyones progress :)

19-03-2011, 19:21
Sorry to lose you Vaiuri, your stuff was looking awesome! The GK will be fun, I'm sure. The plastic kits look really good, and hey they have heavy weapon-toting space monkeys, who could argue with that?

20-03-2011, 09:48
You never know, I may be back, but right now I cant settle on any one thing (I was painting Tyranids yesterday >.<). As I said, I shall keep on lurking in these threads, I really enjoy looking at what people are coming up with and seeing armies take shape :)

Keep up the good work everyone!

22-03-2011, 20:03
Hang on, where did 2/3 of March disappear off to!?

Well my originally planned models for this month are a deffinite no go as they're all currently sat on my desk, some unstarted, most undercoated, and some with a preliminary wash of something or other on them.

I fear I may be staring a joker in the face here, but I will try to pull it out of the bag with a giant I undercoated a little while back.

If nothing else, it'll be tight this month.

It's great to see top quality miniatures still being pulled out. i'm loving those greatswords Daniel36.

Sad to see Vaiuri go. If I were you I'd just put a bit of fortress grey and then some badab black on those Grey "Knights" (obviously no "knights" in the true sense of the word...those imposters!), call them finished, and then crack on with the real stuff.

23-03-2011, 09:33
Hang on, where did 2/3 of March disappear off to!?

You can say that again. Because I couldn't help myself I've gone for my most ambitious conversion yet for my Giant for my Gobbos (I'll be lucky to get the conversion finished by the end of the month...) and I've only just ordered the model for my next Ogre submission since I cant settle on a skin colour for my Gnoblars...

I foresee two jokers on the horizon.

@ Braad: I don't think that magic voodoo you pulled to keep me in the TOFP is going to be enough to stop these jokers :p.

23-03-2011, 18:55
I think I can handle two jokers.
But no more! Otherwise you might want to keep an eye on the sky. There could be a foot of Gork lurking up there...

25-03-2011, 04:22
OK I'm bloody RIPPING! Just got to the end of typing my comments for EVERYBODY and I lost the lot! Sigh! Oh well, nice work everyone...I hope to have my High Elf entry finished in the next couple of days.

25-03-2011, 12:57
OK I'm bloody RIPPING! Just got to the end of typing my comments for EVERYBODY and I lost the lot! Sigh! Oh well, nice work everyone...I hope to have my High Elf entry finished in the next couple of days.

Hehe, I had that problem a few times. I've taken to writing up comments in word (other word processing programs are available) and then copying them to warseer.

I'll also take this opportunity to say how amazingly brilliant this whole concept is. Without the TOFP I would've abandoned painting in november, and I'd still be moving a mound of grey rubbish around battle fields. Instead, I am now within 100 models (including 40 of those thrice damned night gobbos) of completely finishing my 2500 point gobbo army!

Thanks to Harry, Braad, and everyone, for organising, participating, inspiring, commenting, suggesting, and assisting. Without you, I'd be half the man I am today...or at least I'd have half the army I have today.

I second that notion. There's nothing quite like the encouragement that you get from fellow painters and gamers that are in the same boat as you.

Just got back from GW clutching a High Elf Battalion. Let the good times roll!

26-03-2011, 21:34
ARMY: Empire (Boys)

UNIT: Engineer with repeater pistol and pigeon bombs.

STILL TO DO: Little bit of clean up on the base.

HIGHS: This guy was pretty fun, he was the first one I bought and seemed daunting before actually applying paint to pewter.

AND LOWS: He could be a lot better, sure, but he wasn't as big a pain as that damn steam tank.

POINTS : 100

27-03-2011, 15:27
Phew! Just in time.

UNIT: Phoenix Guard, Sea Guard, Swordmasters and Bolt Thrower.

BACKGROUND/THEME: Prince Eravin has been dispatched by the Phoenix King to reclaim and defend a lost Elven City that has risen from under the sea. Home to numerous magical artefacts, the island has drawn other attention as well...

BUILD/CONVERSION: All models are straight out of the box.

PAINTING: I have decided to paint my High Elves almost ghost-like. Very pale colours and using no gold. Silver, blue, turquoise and grey will be used the most. Hair will be either a pale blonde or white. Skin a bone-like colour. Thanks to my wife and Monsterzonk for convincing me to change the gemstones to orange!

BASING: Painted Khemri Brown with flock and static grass added. Simple!

STILL TO DO: More infantry and cavalry.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Still enjoying painting these guys.

POINTS : 1 Sea Guard with shield (Standard) (23pts)
Dragon Prince (Standard) (50pts)
2 Swordmasters (30pts)
2 Phoenix Guard (30pts)
Bolt Thrower (100pts)
233pts total

TOTAL POINTS : 1034 in total

Hi all,

No work from me this month, but I thought I'd comment on as much as I can during my lunch break, which lasts from 10am to 4pm, in case you were wondering. :D

@EmperorNorton - Your ogres are getting better and better every month.

@ScytheSwathe - I really like that white: brighter than an Americans teeth...

@Tonberry - ...and in contrast to ScytheSwathe, the gritty look for you chariot works really well too.

@sssk - Whoa there, that's a lot of painting, makes me feel even more rubbish for not doing anything. I love the way you did the skin too.

@juicytomatoes - love the idea for the conversion, and beautifully executed too. And when in doubt, just paint what looks coolest...

@Paull - Wow, just the steadineess and patience you must have to get those results, just fantastic.

@Jericho - Nice Rune Lord. That. Is. All.

@Solun Decius - Absolutely Epic. Amazing stuff.

@Fechik - That's a beautiful Screaming Bell you've got there. It's post like that that make me want to start a Skaven army.

@Vaiuri - I'm also working on adding to my existing GK now :( as well as starting my own vanilla SM chapter, working on stuff for the tale of Terrain Painters, and painting stuff for a friend. So I understand why you may feel busy right now, but hopefully you'll be able to buy your way back in if your flightiness brings you back in this direction :)

@Fanny Crowbar - Glad i waited to the end of the month to comment as I've managed to catch your great looking High Elves :)

@Everyone - Sorry for not posting about everyone, there is just too much good stuff, it's very inspiring to have a look and it's pretty much the only thing that's keeping me motivated. I'll be back...

Lord Shadowheart

Nearly forgot to upload again, so here we go.

Army 1 Beastmen
Beastlord+ Brass Cleaver 175pts
Minotaur Champion 75pts

The Chariot I did in Month 1 now finally has its intended rider. The beastlord has been specifiacally converted to have a cleaver (Which came from an ogre bull spure) and has a chaos knights shield. Got the Brassy colour (I am right in thinking there used to be a gw brass colour aren't I?) by using Valajo Hammered Copper and mud washign a few times.

The Minotaur champion was done the same way i did my Minotaur lord, his weapons got a devlan mud wash though, to dull them down a little.

29-03-2011, 17:30
Army 2 High Elves

Ogre Maneater, cathayan longsword, heavy armour- 90pts

Didn't really feel like painting any elves this month, so I gave them an Ogre Mercenary, easily one of my Favourite models out there, Ninja Ogre.
The cloth is done the same way I do night goblin robes, drybrush Adeptus Battlegrey, then Black wash it. Skin is Tallarn flesh, then flesh wash and finally devlan mud, his hiair is done the same way I do my Elves

29-03-2011, 22:36
Hey there fellow painters!

I see lots of grand stuff in here but im really pressed for time to comment on them all. Im swamped but still soldier on painting.

I hope to be finished with my warriors this weekend and post on sunday night.
Here are some WIP for ya:

Fingers crossed for a calm week so i can finish the last 5 i need to paint.

My computer broke, so dunno when I can update the tables. Probably not when the new thread comes up... just that you all know.

I think Malorian just volunteered, it's not as if he's busy or anything :p

My computer broke, so dunno when I can update the tables. Probably not when the new thread comes up... just that you all know.

You could always do it by hand?.... *sssk dives behind cover*

On the plus side, that'll let me recalculate my list for the new orc and gobbo book (yes, I've still not got round to doing the maths for my TOFP army).

31-03-2011, 13:36
I think Malorian just volunteered, it's not as if he's busy or anything :p

I could do it if the table was sent to me to update, but I don't think he has access to even that (or else he would be able to do it himself).

It would be possible to remake that entire chart... but that sounds about as fun as filling my pants with broken glass and doing the twist...

Well, that does sound like fun...for those of us watching on the sidelines.

Its the end of the month. I hope everyone is finishing up their work and are happy with the results.

Doi (Ogre Kingdoms): Good blood effect. He looks pretty brutal.

Doi: (Goblins): That Netherhound model is awesome. These are a pair of great conversion ideas. Well done with good supporting fluff.

Daniel36 (Empire): Nice contrasting colors. I especially like that even though you used bright colors you managed to keep the models looking dark and gritty.

Clobbersaurus (Empire): That is a great looking model. Nice wok on the bird especially.

Fanny Crowbar (High Elves): More fantastic work. I really like your Phoenix Guard. I think the turquoise is a nice soft touch to complement all the smooth white on the cloth.

Lord Shadowheart (Beastmen): That Beastlord model is one of the best models in the line, IMO. I also like the work you did on the chariot base.

Lord Shadowheart (Ogre …Elves?): I’m confused here, High Elves using an Ogre Mercenary? Well, the paint job is nice. Good work pulling off the “black cloth” effect.

Kaos (Warriors of Chaos): WIP looks great…as is normal for you.

Confessor_Atol: Thank you. I am glad I was able to do the model justice.

Additional Comments:
Vaiuri: I agree with Purplebeard…you should just do both.

Great work everyone. We are halfway there!

31-03-2011, 17:53
Thanks Illuminus. I hadn't expected a comment on my work this late in the month, especially since my regiment wasn't even finished. But thanks!

I have finished them since, so I will add a picture as soon as next month's log will be opened!

31-03-2011, 21:10
Holy Fuuuu...

had it all written, one key pressed, all gone. I hate shortcuts.

Warflaggens Orcs and Gobbelins, month six.

A word on points total. The new book is out, so I had to recalculate everything. It boils down to this list:

19 Blorcs, full com: 263
1 Grimgor, or 1 reg Blorc: 355 or 12
10 Boarriders, shields, boss: 195
20 reg Orcs, shields full com: 175
20 Gobbos, shields, full com: 100

To it comes half an Azhag, as I was unable to finish him. But I can count him half if he´s half done. Which he is. Makes 275 p.

All in all I have 1020 p or 1363 p done. Counting Grimgor seems kinda pushing it. However, I want 1 joker back.

PAINTING: Lotsa fun. Azhag is a cool oldschool model. Everything rocks, all the detail, itsa fun. Many greens involved, and browns.

MODELING: Only a bit of GSing, gap-filling.

TO - DO: Rest and base. Will be a fallen tree he steps on.

HIGHS - LOWS: I wanted to much when I tried to finish the Wyvern and all the squigs I have. But I got at least something done. And I feel on a roll again.

As far as I got with them squiggies:

Back on track again. At least here. I quit the 40k tale again...
New book is cool btw.

01-04-2011, 08:41
Additional Comments:
Vaiuri: I agree with Purplebeard…you should just do both.

Having just dropped the GKs for a Blood Angel successor chapter (3 models painted, rock on!), its only a matter of time before I return to WFB ;) Maybe not this month, but you can expect me back in here at some point (hopefully with enough painted to catch up!).

Thanks for the words of encouragement folks :)

You could also just wait a day or two, by then my computer will be fixed. It's not like it exploded or something.

Perhaps it's would be wise if I kept a back-up copy around though...

Who's gonna start the new thread? Is Harry around somewhere?

01-04-2011, 19:39
That's pretty funny. I'm glad your computer didn't expolde Brad:)

I suggest you put up the first post so you can later go back and edit it to add the excel sheet when you get your machine working again. Thanks for all the effor too Brad. This is my first warseer TOFP and its been great for my motivation. Let us know if there is any format we could post things that would facilitate data entery on your part too.

Trust me, she'll most likely be back in here at some point - our particular gaming group is basically filled with "oooo, shiny!" people (myself included!) so I expect Vai will wend her way back here soon enough.

OK, this thread is more or less over now but I just want to post some thanks for the kind comments.

@Sturen: Thank you very much!
@jason: Thanks man! I'm glad you like how it turned out. I'm always working on getting those contrasts right.
@Fechik: Thanks man. It's appreciated!
@Tonberry: Thanks!
@Purplebeard: Thanks man! I'm honored. It was actaully me that said that about the size, but it's no less true!
@Iluminus79: Thanks! The toxicity and the real life inspiration was something I really wanted to get across on this one. It's helped me alot before too.
@Dark Apostle: Thanks man!
@perplexity: Thanks dude! I'm really glad the finished article managed to exceed expectations :D
@Jericho: Thanks man! Exploding bright colors is the name of the game for that army :)
@Fabius Bile: Thank you. I'm humbled! Still the GW ones are eons more skillfully painted. Maybe a bit more bland in color though :D
@Confessor_Atol: Thanks man! It actually helps me keep motivated to share the whole process. Also I love the documatation of it :)
@DeadInTheHead: Thank you so much!

Also, everyone who posted after I did my commentiong session, great jobs everyone.

Also one more thing. Instead of painting a proper 200 points this month I focused on a different project with a few friends. I made a separate thread for that project (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=300078) and wanted to point it out here as well (blatant advertisement, yes?).

It was really interesting project as we worked together on a full set of miniatures from Fantasy Flight's Mansions of Madness, even though I'm the only miniature painter in the whole group of 5. Careful planning of who did what made it possible to finish this in relatively few sessions and to a pretty great standard, considering.

Click photos to go to the thread with more photos and (soon) closeups.

Finally, since I've shared some pretty rough news here there's no reason to hold back on the good news. My wife gave birth to a healthy baby boy last week so, all thing considered, we're doing pretty great right now!

Wow, those MoM figures look awesome! Got my housemate that for his birthday recently, might work on painting them up sometime.

Congrats on the new family member too - prepare to have your free time destroyed though ;)

Thanks Zark! It's totally a great kit. Yes, kids have an impact on free time, but I've learnt to make some time despite that, so I'm not too worried this time around :)

Sorry to bump this old thread... Finally got some pictures of my month six contribution, the general.. 145 points.

My General, Storneve Trygvason with his helper "Ralph" the Snotling is this months update.

Unit: Exhalted Hero, Axe of Anti Heros, Charmed Shield = 145 points.

Dice Roll: 4

Better late than never, eyh? Just had some camera problems...
