What computer OS do you use?

Personally I use an Apple Mac; I switched when the iMac first came out.

I'm a Mac man myself. I rather have to be. my father is a freelance programmer (i cut my teeth learning to program in basic on an old power mac) and he specialises in quarkexspress (the stuff gw uses to write white dwarf)

Windows but I keep meaning to try others. Not a big fan of whatever OS sun microsystems use though.

I use Windows XP. I tried Linux (Fedora Core 3) And it was just silly in some respects. The permissions where just annoying. I coulnd't use my Mouse right. Alot of internet functions diddn't work and gaming was nil. The only advantage it had was that it is good for servers.

I just upgraded to XP from ME.

We also have two Macs at home. I like both but Mac OS is definitely more slick.

Well, I'm happy that (at the time of posting!) over 10% of Portent users are Mac users.

Makes me feel warm inside that Portent users are more mac-friendly than the general public (about 6% of computers are Mac apparently worldwide).

Currently I'm using Windows XP Professional. Its a good OS that works well on my laptop.

I must admit to being a fan of the Mac. Its a great OS which has developed in leaps and bounds over the years. The first Mac I used was a Mac Plus in back in 1986 running Mac OS. (I also used the Macs predecesor the LISA in 1985).

I have windows, but if I had to choose one, I would choose, windows.

But, if you could play games on macs, I would choose the apple mac.

I use XP for my desktop, and OSX on my powerbook.

I'm thinking that the old grey box is becoming redundant (for me anyway) and I may just upgrade to a nice new white box...

Windows. My job is all MS focused technology so it carries over to home.

Suprised no Linux yet but not that Windows is out in front

I use windows XP.

If I didn't love PC games so much, or if I had a ridiculous amount of cash to throw around, I wouldn't mind switching and giving Mac a try.

For all those tempted to switch:

And I am surprised there have been no votes for Linux.

I use linux at home on my main pc, though i do use windows on my laptop and games machine.

At work i use windows, albeit running cygwin, and solaris (cross p0latform development is a real pain)

this would have been interesting if there had been the possibility to "vote for" different versions of windows. I also could have told you that 70+% of the users are using windows.

Actually I don't really care what version of Windows people use, I was more interested if there were any other OS's used out there.

And I am pleasantly surprised to see that over 10% of respondants use Mac OS, the operating system of my choice.

MMMM, yet i seem to remain the sole Linux user, oh well.

Windows XP.

A good all round system, unlike Linux and Macs, too specialised.

Although I'm being tempted by Media Center, my friend has it, playing Half-Life 2 on his TV sitting on the sofa. Best thing evur.

Quoting myself - what arrogance!

Anyway, seems that Mr Jobs will be calling Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard:

I use windows XP pro. I'm considering switching to XP 64, since I've got a pretty new athlon 64 chip, but there's still a bunch of compatability issues with between 32bit programs and xp64.

Which is why live cd's were invented, that way you can show off the power of another OS without hte hassle of installing it

But with Steve's latest announcement (Apple will be using Intel chips from next year) you Windows users may be able to easily switch to Mac OS X!

Windows XP.

I'm forced to use Macs at Uni, and although they look pretty, I just find them slower and less under-friendly than a PC (you should not have to use two hands to bring up the right click menu. Ever.).

Windows and boy does it suck. Soon as this computer of mine dies I'm gonna get me one of those iMac G5 comps. Now those are high quality kick **** computers!

The reason I use XP is that there is no Recording-Software close to Cubase, or Soft synth/Effect like Reaktor 4 for Linux. And no drivers for my soundcard.

With Steve's Intel announcement the other day at the WWDC I'd leave buying a Mac until next year - 12 - 18 months.

Personally, I use Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 (or whichever is the most recent). I've never had any real problems with it. The only problem I did have was hardware, not software, and all I had to do was re-rack my graphics cards, network cards, and so on, and it worked fine.

See, if I had replied to this post about 12 months ago, I would have said "Multi-boot system, using Windows XP Home, Ubuntu Linux, and Mac OSX running off two seperate HDD's."

Now, I would have to say "Windows XP Pro, Windows Server 2003, Corrupted Windows XP home".

So yeah, I have added three computers to my collection since. And am trying to get a Mac..... so yeah.
