so, what i your play-time % vs your paint-time %? in other words, how much time do you spend doing each?

personally, i paint 90% of the time, with games at 10% i havent had a real game is a few years. although i could go to the GW nearest me and play, i really dont enjoy it as much as painting. how about YOU

I find that I am at 80% for painting and 20% for gaming, that is mainly because my group is older and we spend more time with other things than GW Games, but when we do get together, due to the short time frame it is easier to pull out the painting stuff than stage a four hour game.

same as you livington, seem to spend far more time painting/modelling than actual gaming, but saying that i probably enjoy that more than gaming anyway!

Try something around 1% painting, and the rest gaming. I wish I did spend some more time painting, but something always gets in the way.

I find it varies. I'll go a few weeks, painting all of the time. But then I go for months where I hardly paint at all. Overall, I guess it would be 30% painting, 70% playing.

The Judge

95% painting, if not more.
Until, that is, I start a Necromunda campaign.

Yeah, that's me too. I've collected enough HE models to field whatever my dark heart desires but hardly any of it is painted yet.

I spend way more time reading this forum than playing. Painting/modelling is first buy a long ways. My group has scattered over the years and now I only get in a few games a year. But I'm stilling buying and assembling armies. I miss having regular weekly games. Good clean fun.

less than probobly a few hours a week at most.... sometimes i dont manage that!

between 0%-3% i would say

I don't like to paint at all and I am lousy at it so I tend to have the local university art students do it for me. Sure, I come up with themes, etc. but my hand-eye coordination isn't what it used to be.

I play almost 95% of the time 5% painting/modeling or doing those things I actually can do on my own.

i paint mabye 90% of the time and only play about 10%, but that is because I only have 2 other players and they refuse to paint their models, so I psint their models for them, so I have to paint about 11,000 pts of minis.

I am lucky if I play once every 2 months...it makes me so sad

26-03-2006, 21:32
For me its 97% paint and 3% play. mainly becuase i want my minis to looks almost perfect

Paint time = 98% Play time = 2%

When I started, I enjoyed just playing and comming up with lists. My painting was pretty shabby indeed. But, now I think I enjoy the painting way more. It is a nice relaxation watching TV or when I have some free time. I took a whole year off from playing and just painted. When I returned I was so rusty that I couldn't even remember what a panic test was. Yikes! But now that I am playing about 2 times a month, I am more motivated to keep on painting (to the chagrin of my wife).

80% paint time 19% modeling time
and 1% play time

I spend approx 1 day for 1 miniture no matter wat it is
but heroes I can paint for weeks/ months not counting breaks

Thankfully I've set aside 1 night a week at my local gaming group. This is normally 3-4 hrs a night of gaming/talking cr@p.

I normally get motivated for a couple of days after the games nights so that'll give me about a 50/50 ratio of painting to gaming.

If reading this site (and my other GW forum) was part of it then painting/gaming would be significantly less

90% paint, 10% play. I'm ridiculously slow with a paintbrush - and the more I paint the more of a perfectionist I become and the slower I get*!

It doesn't help that my regular opponents have gotten a lot busier with work this year. :(

* When I started a single Saurus Warrior would take me three hours from assembly to varnish, now it's closer to seven!

Except for when I have a new army to paint (that's rare theses days), I glue and or paint one to two hours a day, maybe 5 days a week. I try for 6/7 hours/two games a week. In the winter that's easier to do. Not many multiplayer games since last summer. On the plus side, one old fart lives real close so we play on a weeknight. Another old fart lives about 25 (highway) minutes away, we do weekends (mostly Sunday afternoons). With summer there should be some 4 player games (likely WAB rules).

Having 2500/3000 minies means......I am starting to run out of places and reasons for more new minies.;)

i spend half a year painting and half a year playing, usually. But on any given day I either paint or play (or most likely neither and definitely not both at once). I suspect by June I'll have nothing left to paint for my horde, until the new orc and goblin book comes out.

neXus6
27-03-2006, 04:44
At the moment I'm at 0% and 0%.
I'm not playing till I've got my new army at least started to be painted (I want my first ever fully painted army in 12 years of playing, even if it's just 1000pts) and I've only just started to build the models so yeah 0 to 0 ratio.

It used to be 0% to painting and 100% to gaming, but now my guard have got boring to play (this happens every 2nd year), and as an infantry army I barely made a dent on the painting front.

So hopefully it'll be 80% painting 20% gaming once the army is up, until it is painted then back to 100% gaming for a while.

>>>>>I find I get ready for games more then I actualy paint; when I saw getting ready I mean looking at lists/painting. I'm probabley at a 80/20 ratio for painting/playing.

And then there's the time I spend on forums to keep up to date ;), it doesnt get factored in anywhere  .

about 90% painting, 10% gaming because I live in the middle of nowhere:(

The boyz
28-03-2006, 09:24
95% painting for me to about 5% gaming. I havent played a game in ages, well nearly two or three years now. Hopefully that will all change when I get my Skaven army up and running and re-do my Dwarves.

I paint fast (No, i do paint REALLY fast!) but I still paint for a much higher percentage of the time compared to actually gaming. i can blast a boxed regiment out in 6 hours complete with bases, and have built entire armies in a single day. Yet i hardly ever game becaue my opponents are all fething lazy arses who cant be bothered to get a presentable army together :(

or if they do, they cant be arsed because of football or pub.

So aye, 90-95% painting 5-10% playing. probably less.

Dark-Hummingbird
28-03-2006, 10:17
Has to be 85% painting and 15% playing at the moment as I am in the middle of painting a Guard army.

StarFyre
28-03-2006, 11:08
95% paint/5% gaming

for D&D it's better..prob 80% paint/20% playing

At the moment it's about 50/50. I should spend more time painting since I'm working on three armies at the moment, but I just don't have the time.

Thankfully the local store sets up small tourneys, so I get about 6-7 hours of gaming in on saturdays, three weeks out of 4. I don't have 2150pts of skaven yet, so it's not 4/4. But that's ok, I usually spend those saturdays doing some painting.

Venomizer
28-03-2006, 15:40
at the moment.....100% painting, 0% playing

my main problem is motivation, I don't like painting with unpainted figs, but usually can't be bothered to paint, shouldn't have much of a problem now though since I've set myself some deadlines which are helping the motivation problem

GranFarfar
28-03-2006, 15:46
The question is - does anyone actually ever play? :D
Seriously, I wish I hade the dicipline to do some painting... really, not much like getting a unit nicely done.

Personally, I do a minute of painting per half hour of play, no wonder my models are all colours straight from the tub! Im in competitions every weekend at bishops, helping noobs learn X_X "Quote: My demons biger than yurs so iv I roll a 5 i win O.O"

I just have no time for well painted models, besides, i loan them out so much they get too scraped to stay well painted long...

but something always gets in the way.

heh. Yeah, it's called gaming:) I should definitely paint more than I do. As is I can only muster up the will when tennis is on while I game twice a week.

Rahu
28-03-2006, 19:17
About 80% painting, 20% playing. I only play once in a few months, despite there being more than enough opponents, I really should start playing more.:D

Trunks
29-03-2006, 02:26
Probably 95% playing, 5% painting (if that). I paint in spurts. I'll paint steady every night for a week or two, and then go two or three months without even touching a brush (sometimes longer). I just lack painting motivation since I get bored of painting the same model in a different pose over and over again in the same colors.

03-04-2006, 06:26
I spend most of my time painting but then hey, I figure that if I'm spending hundreds of dollars to build an army then I better spend some time paining them and making em look nice. One thing though I'm not sure I want to paint another unit of Goblins for quite some time! Guess I'm to much of a perfectionist at heart and that makes it hard to be a drybrush king as I like to call em.

Sir_Turalyon

98%-99% painting, 1%-2% gaming. I'm long way from home, with enough work to have no time for seeking opponents, and enough work to need to relax by painting.

95% playing, 5% painting. I do have several fully painted armies for tournaments, but with three kids now, I rarely have time to prepare for tournaments and thus haven't painted in about a year. I do however manage to play a couple of games a week, either at my local store/club or in my game room in my home.

Saying that, I'm about 90/10 painting/playing

5% paint, 20% play, and 75% coming up with ideas for armies and argueing about fluff and tactics. I like to hang out, I actually rarely get a game in. And I haven't even assembled, let alone paint, anything since January.

Pretty much the same for me - in fact my gaming could even be as low as 5%!!!!!
