View Full Version : War is expensive - Pre-Heresy Blood Angels

01-04-2011, 19:05
Hello guys,
I finally started painting the nice miniatures I ordered with FW ages ago... I am starting a Pre-Heresy Blood Angels army.

This is the very first painted model for this project... still WIP though... I will paint the backpack tomorrow and try to find some decal sheets...
This is also my very first contribution to this forum as a painter! The picture doesn't do it justice, unfortunately I had to take it with a compact camera and had to tweak the colours so it is a bit closer to reality... That camera is s**t

Your comments are welcome!

Looking good, just got myself a set of the mk II armour and it's so great :D

I really like the look, very rugged and fits pre heresy perfectly, especially with the type of heavy bolter.

Looking good, I was thinking of using those heavy bolters with the Forge World kits for an Iron Warriors force a group of us are doing. Looking forward to seeing more :)

Thanks for your comments guys :)

A quick update on the same model that just got completed with iconography and everything...
I had to forsake the idea of decals as it seems I am rubbish at applying them. I therefore decided to paint the company symbol and made a "print" of the chapter icon with some green stuff which came out perfectly!

Still the same rubbish camera so, unfortunately, a lot of colour information is lost in the process... and the autofocus drove me insane :cries:

Enjoy! And once again you comments are most welcome!

Impressive! White lines especially.

very nice work, the red look wel lexecuted and the model has a great feel about it. I am particularly impressed with the highlighting on the heavy bolter. will be watching this log with great interest.

really cool
how do you paint the red ?

That company symbol is nicely freehanded, and I like the chaper icon, people making print casts for things like this alway make me want to try it myself :)

Very simple process for the red:
White undercoat, several layers of very diluted blood red (usually 25% paint with 75% water) until it reaches optimum opacity.
I do apply some blazing orange highlights prior to a thorough baal red wash, then reapply some blazing orange and gradually bring that colour to space wolf grey for the final highlights. SW grey might sound weird, but I never use white to brighten a colour as it desaturates it... in the case of red it just turns into dull pink which I really don't like.
I only use orange or yellow in the first stages of brightening my red to keep it warm, and use SW grey in the very last stages to cut with the general warmth of the whole model.

Edit: Forgot the stage during which I apply some black ink in the grooves, around the rivets, etc... to get more contrast. I do that right after the baal red wash.

Definitely a fine paint job, but you know, red colour deserves it.

Hello guys!
Is has been something like 8 months since I started this log and barely anything has changed since then... too much work and not enough free time on my hands don't allow much progress I'm afraid, but I intent to change that over the next few weeks and get at least a few models painted for your eyes to feast on!
I also have a few ideas of conversions, the first of which was finished today!
Here we go with the pictures then:

Nice to see you picking up the brush again :D The chaplain is great, except for his left arm, the one holding his crocius arcanum, it's way too long and unfortunately make him look a bit like a monkey..
You should definitely shorten both the upper arm and the lover, as that will make him look way better :)

Agreed with the damned artificer: left arm is a bit too long.
Paintings are very crisp, well done.

The left arm is indeed too long. Because of the angle I needed I had to cut the whole shoulder section and re-sculpt it but didn't think it would make it seem so much longer... all fixed now ;)
