View Full Version : Thought begets heresy; heresy begets retribution

So for a while before the new grey knights codex came out, me and my brother were discussing what we would use it for; surprisingly enough neither of us actually wanted it for the grey knights. I've always liked the Ordo Xenos, in my head they are the coolest branch of the inquisition, they get all the cool tech and power without having to be raving religious nutjobs.
So I set about writing a list using the new book once I grabbed a look at it at my local store. Feeling quite inspired, I bought the book and did a bit of fiddling with the list and came out with this:

Inquisitor Lord Arcturus Black (Counts as Coteaz)

Inquisitor Emilie Kerrigan (Counts as Valeria)

Eversor Assassin (Exodite Eldar Blademaster)

Vindicare Assassin (Will be an inquisitorial operative with a pimped out xenos rifle)

Henchmen - Arco Flagellant, 2 Crusaders, 2DCA, Mystic, Warrior Acolyte with melta Bombs, Warrior Acolyte with carapace and plasma pistol (Will be a mix of eldar, tau and humans, detaills to follow)

Henchmen - 4 servitors with heavy bolters, Jokaero, mystic, 3 warrior acolytes with carapace and plasma gun (Tau themed squad with drones as servitors and air caste as mystic)

Henchmen - 10 warrior acolytes with hot shot lasguns (Elysian models, basically inquisitorial stormtroopers)

Strike squad - 5 man with psycannon and hammer (will be converted to be deathwatch marines)

Strike Squad - 5 man with psycannon and falchions (same as above)

Stormraven Gunship (Using this as my inquisitorial cutter/ transport, basically the image I have in my mind from the eisonhorn books)

Dreadknight (thinking of making a knight-titan-esque thing)

Anyway, the idea I had behind the army was a core of imperial troops, which had been operating in the field for a long time, and through interactions with xenos races had picked up reinforcements. My inquisitors are on the radical side of things, nothing evil, but they believe that they need to cooperate with the xenos races that aren't actively trying to kill them in order to deal with more pressing threats... more on this later!

Quick double post to show the pics I've just uploaded.
I have been working on the cutter and my first strike squad this week, while also revising for my finals.... honest? :P anyway, on to the pics!

Inquisitorial Cutter and Deathwatch Kill Team

I've done a reasonable amount of conversion to them, greenstuffed over all the embossed text on the armour, removed all the book and sword sympols, and added DW pads and bolters.
More to follow soon, I have another kill team ready to convert and will be ordering some henchmen at some point, although I must resist! Finals are soon and revision must be done! *browses forge world and drools*

Well hello there...
I've been waiting for you Arcturus, and welcome to a butt-kicking :)

Anyway, on to the real stuff then :D so, the plan behind my leg of this log is also an Inquisition army. Except with one small (BIG) twist to it. I am planning a radical Ordo Malleus force that throughout it's long service has slowly been corrupted by Slaaneshi Daemons. Starting from being a Puritan to becoming Radical through the inevitable contact with the warp and the Inquisitor "Lord's" thirst for power.
My list is based around a counts-as Coteaz for his ability to make the Hunchmen troops.

Anyway, on to the list and the theme behind it:

Inquisitor Lord Morgana (Ordo Malleus) w/ Daemonblade, Power Armour, 3 Servo Skulls, Psyker with Hammerhand:
Plan for her is to use the Saint Celestine model as a base to start at, swapping the cloak with flying babies for a regular power pack, taking off both her hands to add in the sword from the Winged Vampire and in her other hand will be her las pistol. Also will be taking off all of the fleur de lis on her armour and adding in some slaaneshi symbols using greenstuff on her armour and painting he withg an eerily daemonic glow.
Inquisitor Mordred (Coteaz):
using the base model of coteaz adding in a longer handled daemin hammer converted from chaos knight bits and giving him a hand that implies he is using psychic powers. And obviously taking off the psyber-eagle because i am not much of a fan of it.

Inquisitorial Henchmen 1:
5 servitors w/ heavy bolters, 5 psykers, 2 jokaero waeponsmiths
Inquisitorial Henchmen 2:
2 daemonhosts, 4 deathcult assassins, 3 crusaders, rhino
Inquisitorial Henchmen 3:
2 mystics, 2 banishers w/ eviscerators, 4 arco flagellants, warrior acolyte w/ power weapon, rhino

(all henchmen squads will be combination of different models such as IG Cadians who have been given the techno-virus to represent the servitors, jokaero weaponsmiths will be dark mechanicus tech adepts) More on this in later posts.

Grey Knight Strike Squad:
+1 GK, Psycannon, Psybolt Ammunition, Nemesis Halberd

(the strike squad is going to be a unit of Noise Marines, i figured that storm bolters with psybolts were similar to the blastmasters and the psycannon is vaguely like the sonic blaster.)

Techmarine, rad grenades, 3 servo skulls

(plan is to convert a dark mechanicum arch magos for this)

Nemesis Dreadknight w/ heavy incinerator, nemesis greatsword
Nemesis Dreadknight w/ heavy incinerator, nemesis greatsword

(the dreadknights are going to be daemon engines converted from the defiler kit so that it is bipedal)

Total: 1500pts

this differs from my brothers list by being entirely turned radical and mostly possessed by daemons and/or corrupted by them. We are both going to be writing up some fluff to tie in the two armies, along the lines of both being in the same system. His inquisitor warband has been dispatched to bring mine to heel for heresy and due to allying with daemonic powers.

Sadly i have nothing other than ideas and a list to show for myself as yet. But i have ordered some stuff to begin converting as soon as it arrives :)

Damn it! Meant to say when I posted the pics but completely forgot. I'm pondering adding battle damage to the strike squad and cutter, but I'm not sure, your thoughts please warseer? :P
Also, as I've never tried it before, are there any good examples/ tutorials you could direct me to?
Cheers in advance

Good Googily Moogily!!

I've been waiting for someone to come up with a truly awesome Valkyrie-Storm Raven hybrid!

You sir, get the cookie.

Great opening pic...looking forward to seeing more of it and what you're going to call it.

08-04-2011, 05:22
Both sound awesome, hope you've got the modeling skills to go with the great ideas!

08-04-2011, 07:16
Would it be a valkraven???

Nice start to the deathwatch, keep them coming

08-04-2011, 07:26
Seems pretty cool. Just curious, why did you decide to convert grey knight models? I see you had to greenstuff over all the scripting and stuff. Wouldn't it have easier to just use normal marines and the deathwatch bitz?

I like the guncutter except that its wings are too far back. It was one of the things I didn't like about the stormraven.

08-04-2011, 10:21
Thanks for all the comments guys :)
@Pekel: I'm confident that I do XD I have been in the hobby for 9 years and this is going to be probably my 4th army ever completed lol. And most armies I have had gave some form of conversion in them. Started off with some simple kit bashing and more recently have done some mad things like converting a balrog in to a bloodthirster :)
@ the rest: my brother will answer any questions you have as soon as he realises that people have commented lol :D

*edit* oh and I almost forgot, I have ordered some stuff to start off with, celestine for my first inquisitor, a box of flagellants for my psykers and mystics and a rhino to convert :)

09-04-2011, 20:27
So, I had a teeny little update now :) I have converted the 'daemonsword' morgana will wield. It is made from the hilt of the sword from the winged vampire and the blade from vlad's sword. I didn't like the length of the original sword as it was far too short for my liking. And vlad's is about half an inch longer, which IMO is a much better length for her.
The quality of the photo isn't great because it was taken on my iPhone.
Plan for painting is to do a marbled green effect with osl to show the power within the blade. I went with this conversion because I wanted a very ornate basket hilt and a long thin blade like a rapier but with a it more weight to it so it could be used not only for thrusting but also for hacking and slashing when Morgana becomes possessed by the daemon within her. I shaved down the diamonds on the original hilt because I didn't like the look of them and pinned the two halves of the sword together, I am also going to be most likely doing a bit of greenstufd gap filling to make the join seamless and also to provide a by more strength so it doesn't break :)

Edit: I have just realised going through my post that a lot of this has some heavy innuendos throughout, this was unintentional but still made me laugh lol :)

13-04-2011, 01:41
Hey all, thanks for the kind words :)
@Hellebore, there are a number of reasons I decided to use the GK models; I like the shape of the armour panels, subtely different than the normal space marines. Also, the inquisition logos on the armour go further to making them look a bit special. It's either that or I'm working from my flat while at uni, and all my space marine bits are at my parents house :P
I'm sorry for lack of progress, will get more done tomorrow hopefully, as I've just brought back a rucksack full of bits and pieces to convert some henchmen and inquisitors out of, and have started work on my inquisitor conversions already.
Until tomorrow!

13-04-2011, 10:05
Hello again everybody! I have been rather busy the last few days, receiving mail orders and getting started on some models. First off we have my Inquisitor Morgana, converted from saint celestine with a laspistol that I found lying around and the sword pictured earlier http://tapa.tk/mu/56984f69-65af-00ae.jpg
And now we have 4 out of 5 psykers converted from the flagellant box set: first one is nameless, then we have in order; hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil!
They all need some greenstuff work to fill in gaps and anything else i decide to add on.
And now we have my assassins, death cult and the callidus, these are represented by slaaneshi daemons, the daemonettes being my DCA and the herald is the Callidus:
The callidus needs some work done with greenstuff, mostly gap filling but also some work on the neck as the head is a bit big for it.
Hope you all enjoy!

13-04-2011, 10:20
I really enjoyed reading the concept for both of these armies, they sounds amazing!

I'm not a huge fan of the cutter, but then I think we all imagine Eisenhorns cutter in our own way so it's never going to match up to what I think it should look like - that said the joining of the two kits is very well done, even if I don't like the look!

The marines though look excellent, as do the rest of the minis. Looking fwd to it all taking shape!

EDIT - I've got some misc noise marine bits I've just posted in teh for sale thread if you're interested!

14-04-2011, 22:39
Well hello again :)
Now that warseer is back up again after pretty much a full day of it being down, I can finally show the progress that I have gotten done while I was down at my local GW today.
So without further ado:
First off are the counts as banishers who are just sister repentia models with any and all inquisitorial/sob insignia shaved off and will get some slaanesh symbols freehanded on during painting :)
Same story for my arco-flagellants:
And then my two mystics who are converted from more flagellants, with the back banners being like chaos icons, for summoning daemons/teleporters, all gaps from rents and tears in their clothes have been filled in with greenstuff as I wanted them to be slightly more "civilised" than my psykers, along with 'shirts' sculpted underneath their robes:
And finally my first two 'grey knights' aka noise marines, just stock builds with greenstuffed gaps:

And again, I apologise for the terrible photos, using my phone until I start painting and doing more in depth conversion work. I will start using a proper set up with my camera when I start painting etc.
Hope you all like!

15-04-2011, 02:01
Wow that is a nice take on a gunship!

15-04-2011, 19:58
What the f-updates!
Ok, so I really did mean to post something a couple of days ago, but after a couple of hours of filing, chopping, positioning and GS-ing, not only did I realise i had no super glue :wtf: but also wasnt pleased with what I had done.
So today, after a trip to the local GW, I did some more work. Hope you like it :D

This is early WIP on Emilie Kerrigan. I had originally wanted to use all of the banshee body, but even after extensive dremelling (thanks matt) I wasn't happy with it, so started on a new torso.

My Vindicare so far. Not sure about the gun, but really happy with the way the elysian head looks on the ranger's body.

(very) early WIP on Arcturus Black. Again, tried to use a scorpion exarch on the base, but it took so much filing to get rid of the overly-eldary bits that I think I'm going to craft him some robes to cover the horrible job I've made so far :P Quite happy with the pulse pistol though, which is standing in for the cyber eagle attack

And finally my Eversor, again very early WIP. Loving the pose of this one, and really enjoying working on the model as a whole. I used a DE warrior head with all the detail scalpelled off and the face GSed over, as I wanted him to look really menacing, and I think the faceless blank helmet really does that..
Again all very early WIP but I was just wondering what you lovely people thought, cheers!

15-04-2011, 20:04
I love the look of your Eversor, I will be watching and wanting to see more soon :)

15-04-2011, 20:17
Ooh, sam that is some nice work you have going there... And I TOLD you to use the kneeling ranger body didn't I!?!?
But yeah, looking fantastic there, the addition of the sisters backpack really does wonders to make her look more imperial.
Looking good so far, keep the updates coming :)

15-04-2011, 20:26
Yes you did Matt :P I was looking at him today and though I'd give taking the head off a go, turned out really easy as I could use the existing neck

15-04-2011, 20:39
Xtra lttrs...

16-04-2011, 12:59
Great stuff guys, still can't get my head round the gun cutter, very cool!!!

Only minor gripe so far is the Vindicare, I think its the Eldar Rifle "magazine" more than anything, I'd think about removing it or perhaps changing it for a a Pulse Rifle magazine. Other than that the join between the Eldar and Tau rifle is a bit iffy but I'm sure thats just the WIP nature of the nature and the gems on the gun and scope. VEry promising though, good stuff Sam.

Matt I can't wait to see what your army ends up with, the Daemon aspect is intriguing to say the least :)

16-04-2011, 13:02
Cheers Jono!
yeh the vindicare has probably had the least work done on it, I think you are right about the magazine and gems, they will be the next thing to come off. Not sure how the barrel and stock of the gun are going to work quite yet, might just shave the barrel down so it fits better and give that a go.
Anyway, hopefully more updates today if i can tear myself away from the computer!

16-04-2011, 13:33
Cheers Jono! Updates should come tonight when I start painting the first few member of the warband :)
And sam, get your butt away from that damn pc and get working you fool!!!

16-04-2011, 19:03
Update time!
I spent a few hours today working on my inquisitor, trying to sculpt robes for him. In the end I'm quite happy with them, did take me three attempts though....
It's the first time I've sculpted cloth on anything approaching a big scale, but let me know what you think!

I think the folkds on the chest part of the robe could be better, but I'm kind of hitting my skill ceiling now, so if I do robes on another model hopefully I can make them look more realistic

I've also done some more work on the eversor, just a bit of fur to cover up an ugly joint on the shoulder, and filling in the recess on the back which usually has a big DE banner/trophy rack, which I wasn't a fan of.

And then cleaned up the rifle on my vidicare, liking it a lot more, thanks to SonOfUltramar for the tips!

Work has also continued on my female Inquisitor, but I'm even less happy with her now. After talking to Matt about it this afternoon, I think I'm either going to trash the legs and use Lelith Hesperax's, OR....
What do you think?

16-04-2011, 19:14
Go for leliths legs!!! Your an Ordo xenos! Do it! Do it now!!!
But yeah, looking fantastic there sam :D
I am in the process of spraying some stuff ready for painting, so I should have some prettyful updates later on...

16-04-2011, 19:54
but Lok is so pretty! I know I want him in my army at some point.....

17-04-2011, 14:58
Hello all! It's officially update time from me :D
Ok, so i have been doing some painting last night and for most of today, and i have some things to show you that hopefully you will all like.
First image is the DCA.
First off we have a question in relation to the skin tone of my Daemonette Cult Assassins: WHat do you think of this little bit of skin i have painted, is it good, bad? What would you change if so?
Second image is the first fully painted model (barring the basing...)
And lastly is two photos of the WIP of Morgana's sword, i was originally going to be doing a green marble effect but i tried out a few things on a random sword i had lying around and didn't like anything i tried. So after a few starts and stops i remembered an effect i did on my local GW's Dreadknight's Greatsword and thought i would try it out here. Really liking the way it has come out so far but it still needs a few more glazes to get it to where i will be finished.

Oh, and the images are quite large so beware!

C+C is welcome and readily asked for in relation to any/all painting so far.

*EDIT* Oh, i have judt realised i have some cleaning up to do on some parts of the blade, so i will get around to that once i get back to painting later on today!

17-04-2011, 15:15
Come paint all my power weapons for me? :D Nice work so far, gonna keep an eye on this. my only gripe with the GS'd cloth is the chest think it could do with a little clean up, perhaps look at say the Dark Angel robes for a couple of pointers? Very nice so far though. Really loving the gunship too :) Keep up the work guys

17-04-2011, 16:34
Cheers Castellanash, yeh I completely agree with you, thats one of the things I'll be working on this evening, as i said it's the first time I've tried cloth on that scale, but thanks for the tip, I'll have a look at some Dark Angels pics before I start :)

17-04-2011, 17:33
Thanks mate, but no! :)
Takes a while to do one, never mind all the power weapons in an army lol ;)
What do people think of the flesh tone on the DaemonetteCultAssassin?

17-04-2011, 19:26
In relation to the flesh tone I personally would have gone for a more purple/darker tone just because that's the norm for daemonettes, yours is perfectly viable and does look very nicely done. That's just what I'd do :)

17-04-2011, 19:43
I was thinking about it and had planned a darker tone but it just sort of happened lol, tis the reason I was asking :P
And now that I have done a bit more work on it I can't seem to get the same colour again :(
So I'm just going to rethink the while thing and look for some inspiration on the net :D
Will get back later on with an updated flesh tone!

17-04-2011, 22:57
Ok, so quick update before i am off to bed to nurse my man flu:
I have done some work on Morgana tonight, mostly painting her armour, but also fixing the bits of her blade that were off before and also finishing the glazing on it too.
C+C welcome and asked for!

I will get some better photos up tomorrow when i have some natural light to play around with :)

17-04-2011, 23:38
I'm gonna have to stop posting now and let others join in haha, that armour looks really nice, you going to give it a varnish? I was just thinking it could look really nice with a gloss varnish on it, make the colour really stand out and it'd make her stand out from the rest of the army too... Just my two cents. Great work again :)

18-04-2011, 00:28
Thank you :)
I'm not sure yet, as I think it may detract from the colours and the scheme I'm going for, but I'll see how I feel when she is fully painted and see if it is needed :D

18-04-2011, 04:15
Looking good Matt!
In other news, Bah! Spent a couple of hours today trying to get my female inquisitor completed, swapped out the legs for Leliths, and she still looked way too eldary and just a bit weird. I tried adding a SOB style cloak to try to imperialise her, but it's not working so far... I'm now wondering if a full tabard might be a better idea, as it would make her slightly less sleek and eldar-ish, not sure though, more tests tomorrow I guess.
Although to be honest I'm so close to just completely restarting her or defaulting to using Lok
suggestions way more than welcome, feel like I need to crowd source some help on this one

18-04-2011, 12:17
Hello all, I'm back with more updates!!!
All to do with Morgana as i am really, really enjoying painting her. I have done a fair amount of work on some of the little details like the sword hilt, the pistol and the helmet on her base. Also started the work on the bone details on her armour, going to be a long process for them as it is only 3 skulls and i am planning like 6 layers for them...
OH, and i have just noticed some mistakes on the armour and in the pistol, will get to them as soon as i get back to painting...

Hope you all like, and again C+C is appreciated!

18-04-2011, 20:04
Just me in here now? AH well, anyway...
I have another update! Done a fair amount of work on the first inquisitor, Morgana. The skin tone is meant to represent her being possessed by a daemon so it is quite pale with an undertone of purple, what do you think?
All i have left do now is the tassle on her sword and her hair and then wait for the power pack that my brother is suppose to have sent me :shifty:.
A couple of questions now, what colour do you think i should do the tassle?
Should i paint her hair Blonde or Black?

18-04-2011, 23:27
Me again lol, have the hair dark as a contrast to the pale skin, also for the tassle perhaps a rich red? Would fit in with the standard Imperial red fetish for fancy stuff... She's coming along beautifully... Can't wait to try this effect :)

19-04-2011, 08:08
Thanks mate :)
Yeah, I was leaning more towards darker hair to contrast the skin myself :D
I'll see what I can do with red on the tassle...
Oh, but I'm not a bleeding imperial!!! Grr...
She once was a devout inquisitor but has been possessed by a slaaneshi daemon encased in her daemon sword :) (wait a second, that sounds familiar lol :shifty: )

19-04-2011, 09:43
Very nice, I really like Morgana. Not so keen on the Daemonette DCA, but its still very fine.

19-04-2011, 10:12
subscribed, i want to see the renegade warband completed! :p

19-04-2011, 10:58
Thanks for the comments guys (and gal)!!!
@eldar gal, what is It that puts you off of it?

I'll have some more updates for you all tonight, I'll he going in to my local GW for a few hours to get some painting done!

19-04-2011, 11:18
It looks too much like a Daemonette to be acceptable for an Inquisition army, in my opinion. Obviously its not my army so it doesn't matter.:p I'd just try and make it fit in more with the Imperiums aesthetic.

19-04-2011, 11:57
Yeah, luckily my army isn't imperium lol :D
Used to be, but being a radical Ordo malleus she tried to control the powers of chaos for her own use, sadly failed and is now a full blown heretic (but not in her own mind) and she uses whatever beings she thinks will grant her the most power.
But hey, you are perfectly entitled to your own opinion and I thank you for the constructive crits :D

*edited for silly iPhone auto correct...*

21-04-2011, 12:43
Hello all, I'm back again.
After a few days of furious painting while i have had the man flu i have managed to get a hole host of painting goodies done!
Firstly we have the (mostly) finished Morgana, still just needs the power pack to arrive so i can paint it.
Then the DaemonetteCultAssassin: who i fin ally managed to get a skin tone that I am happy with. Also shown is the claws, which are glazed multiple times... took ages!
And the Banisher.
Then the comedy trio: See no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil...

Anyway, C+C is weclomed.

*images continue in next post...

21-04-2011, 12:45

On the psykers, i have tried out a technique i have always wanted to put on a model. Stubble, i quite like how it has turned out, and as alwyas with a new technique there are some things i would change next time around!

21-04-2011, 21:21
Haha me again, I like the look of those psykers and you know my opinion of Morgana already :P that daemonette skin is more towards what I meant too, good work all round again... (Wonder where the other posters are :shifty:)

21-04-2011, 21:53
Thanks for the comments again mate :)
I wonder... :shifty:

21-04-2011, 23:24
I'm still here honest!
Had my Mum through to the flat for a couple of days so that combined with continued revision etc has meant that work has come to a standstill on the project. Tomorrow is another day though! Hoping to pick up a mail order tomorrow that will let me complete my male inquisitor, and after that the rest on the henchman for his squad will come fairly quickly.
promise more work tomorrow!

18-05-2011, 23:13
Guys! Come on! There's gotta be more... This thread was awesome... Invoke the laws of threadomancy and get it up again...

18-05-2011, 23:57
Oh we are planning on it :)
Haven't had much time to work on them recently due to the Orcs and goblins army I'm using in a campaign ATM, but I have done some work :) and so has the brother so tomorrow we will get some photos up of our progress :D

20-05-2011, 10:06
Finally we have an updates!
Through the long dark night of the warseer rebuild, I was getting some work done, but then uni stuff got in the way, but as soon as I was finished (sort of) I got straight back to work on my army.

Here is Inquisitor Black, pretty much finished bar some final detailing and freehanding, which I am too scared to attempt atm

First test for my 'grey knights' again pretty much finished except some details.

And then the rest of the deathwatch marines, pretty early WIP, but turning out to be fairly quick to paint, once I had wrestled my Citadel spray gun into working properly.

Unfortunately the last incarnation of Inquisitor Kerrigan met an untimely end, when I decided I hated it. So I quickly knocked together a quick version 2 using the SOB canonness and some Eldar bits, not happy with it tbh, but it will do for now.

more following, damn you pic limit!

20-05-2011, 10:18

My jokaero is mostly done, still need to do the orbs on his armour and a few other things

And just because the models are cool, I'll be using these two as my mystics

Finally, these are my converted acolytes with plasma guns, still needing some guitar string power cabling attached.

In other news, I picked up some arbited and Kal Jerico yesterday, meaning I now own all my henchman, and the only thing left to buy for the army is the dread knight knight titan conversion bonanza, which I'm going to treat myself with once everything else is finished

20-05-2011, 10:40
Hello again all, I'm a bit late with posting photos up, sorry...
But they are here!
First off is my Arch Magos (read: Techmarine) who i have had some time to work on recently, he is nowhere near finished but i have done the bulk of the work on his robes, still need to do the sleeves across his chest and the sash that is going to be around his waist (which is why there is some greenstuff that has been chopped away around his waist).
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb207/thehermit_2007/Thought%20Begets%20Heresy%20Heresy%20Begets%20Retr ibution/_MG_2980.jpg
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb207/thehermit_2007/Thought%20Begets%20Heresy%20Heresy%20Begets%20Retr ibution/_MG_2981.jpg

And then my 'Grey Knights', who are actually Noise Marines of Slaanesh
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb207/thehermit_2007/Thought%20Begets%20Heresy%20Heresy%20Begets%20Retr ibution/_MG_2982.jpg

And that is all i have done really, I'm a bit lazy lol.
But i do have some more stuff on the agenda, mainly finishing off the Arch Magos and then converting my Coteaz stand-in.
