...to stand my dwarf lod on but don't fancy spending 20 just to get the one GW make.

its going to be this dude (http://www.dwarftales.com/res/fOF6HmgzOJ/dwarf_hero01_shield_miniatu.jpg) and i have a metric tonne of spare warriors to make shield bearers out of so it's really jsut a shield i need :S

Any ideas?

The other option is to have a shield bear (http://sciborminiatures.com/i/2010/big/dwarf_general_on_war_bear_p_01.jpg)-er ^_^

Crocodile games has pretty decent size individual spartan shields that would look pretty good.

Yeah they'd be great but ordering 1 metal shield all the way from the US seems a bit excessive. Scibor do some 22mm plastic shields but again they're all the way across the pond. I'd need to find someone near me in the UK who wants to place an order as well really :(

Oooh... Very nice. I'd probably go for that. This said, some of the biggest shields are Chaos Warriors or Knights shields. Filing them should do the job. Alternatively, a 40K storm shield, filed, could easily do the job too (the ones on the Space Wolf Terminators, for example).

I believe Darksphere in London are now stocking the Scibor stuff http://www.darksphere.co.uk

or what may be better is some of Kev Whites stuff at Hasslefree

Have you thought about using the bottom of a small GW flying stand? Should paint up nicely, you could even maybe get some dwarf runes to put round it from the Warrior sprues?

Why not make one from green stuff and a small flying base, or theres the new dark eldar parasite/talos engine (one of them has a shield thingy on its back, bits site soon maybe?), but id say a small flying base with a lil green stuff work to make it look like a shield be simple.

Yup, I use the 40mm scale hoplite shields for my Ogres. Should be able to stand a Dwarf on one of those.
The Mjolnir / Monster shield is of similar size.

Well darksphear has them in teh side bar but 0 stock :(

Kev on the other hand seems to be a good choice! Nice one dude! :D

Edit: If i practise and practice and generally improve beyond all recognition then my modelling skills might eventually one day qualify to be considered "utterly crap". Hence why I'm buying a shield ;)

The Skaven Plague Monks kit has some big gong things as one of the musician's possible instruments, and they're a good size. I made an oversized shield for a Dwarf conversion from one simply be filing it down smooth, but the gong part itself is very easy to cut away and tidy up, and has a kind of "golf ball" texture for want of a better description, painted with a mix of metal colours it could look good on its own, and bearing in mind that you can't see much under a Dwarf anyway.

You can see the gong thing that I mean here (http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m620009a_99120206004_SkavenPlaguemonksSprue1_873x6 27.jpg) (bottom left), it's maybe half again the size of a regular Dwarf shield, maybe a little bigger. The Plague Monks set comes with four so if you know any Skaven players (or just ask around in store) then I'm sure someone can give you one.

Plastic minotaus have some pretty big sheilds, maybe something that you could use?
