View Full Version : [BFG] Tau fleet colour scheme

I have been wondering how to choose a colour scheme for a Tau fleet. In the Armada rule book there are some sample schemes which seem to use completely different colours than the Tau/Tau Empire codexes. The CPF ships from Forge World are painted in a T'au colour scheme (or so it seems).

Is there any reason in the orginial (that is the Armada) colour schemes?

I am tempted to try the T'au colour scheme on the SG models. Has someone else done this (and pictures to point me to ;))?

Have fun,

Rolf.

I don't recall the T'au scheme, but I'd say there's no logic in the Armada ones at all.

For the rest though, I draw you to my own fleets, not the best painted or anything like that but they *are* there, and there's a bit of variety in paint scheme.

I'm a fan of the newest images, but don't ask me what that ship is.

EDIT:
Oh my!

Thank good, I am not crazy. The T'au scheme is desert with white being the sept colour. The FW painted ships have those colours.

Interesting. You have a very impressive fleet there. Still, your colours look more imperial to me. On the other hand a desert colour scheme is not the first choice for space either. :( Thanks for the link.

Have fun,

Rolf.

The T'au colour scheme has evolved way past a simple cammo scheme though, it's now used as a 'Dress uniform colour'.

IIRC the Tau fleet is run by the air caste, while the land forces are controled by the fire caste. Could that give a background reason for the colour differences?

Given the style of the CPF, and the use of the Manta (which is really the smallest escort in the fleet rather than an attack craft). I would imagine that Tau ships do the very low orbit thing a lot more than Imperials do, not to mention the image of one of the large manta sized ships hovering over a battlefield lending supporting fire is immensely cool (the Emmisaries even look vaguely like the Battleship from the Brood war opening cutscene).

Manta's appear to have the same sort of reactive camoflage that the Tau tanks and armour do (the only real reason for 'night camo' if you think about it). Suppose it may be a bit expensive, but something that adapts to the em absorbsion of its surrounds would be equally useful in space as on the ground (near invisibility to radar and suchlike). Course this means that they will tend to be black...

Alternatively I'd go with something based of the Sept Colours.

Cheers Fracas. I find the FW ones a bit...difficult to paint *and* have them look plausibly like Space-Ships. The SG ones look naturally more starshippy IMO. That said, I'm quite fond of the idea of adaptive camo/colourings on them. Not quite 'cloaking' sort of stuff, but something that changes to suit your needs is quite a nice idea.

I figured that some sort of space camo (i.e.: Black/grey) would be appropriate. However after I didn't want it to look like my old Imperial fleet. While that fleet was multi-colored to some extent, it did include a LOT of "battle ship grey." I also considered the geometric camo that several navies used on their vessels during WW2, but I couldn't figure out how to do it without making my REALLY expensive FW fleet (though I do have some SG escorts) look terrible. So, I'm going with red & black, and using the farsight Icon decals, thus my fleet is from the Farsight enclave, or whatever its called. I don't know if just Commander Farsight paints his armor red, but first cruiser that I painted came out good enough to continue that scheme.

The other Resident Tau fleet (a combo of FW and SG, and some ships from other mini ranges) is a green dry brushed over black color scheme. Not quite to my tastes though, as it reminds me of my plague marines...
