Leonis Minoris
Home World to the Lions Argent Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes

Leonis Minoris is the capital planet of the Leonis Cluster, situated on the eastern fringe of the Segmentum Solar within thirty light years of both Armageddon and Elysia. The Leonis Cluster, known by many traders as the Leonis System, is comprised of seven planets orbiting a youthful star, all of which are colonised to a greater or lesser extent.
Once a verdant and mineral rich paradise brought into compliance by the Seventy First Expedition Fleet during the latter years of the Great Crusade the system’s third planet, Leonis Minoris, is now a near lifeless rock, its mineral deposits long since depleted and the climate suffering from the effects of the system’s expanding star. The increasing hostility of the planet’s climate has seen an evolution in its colonisation, specifically the focusing of populations in fortified hive cities and metropolises across the northern and southern hemispheres, leaving the barren equatorial zones uninhabited. Plagued by dust storms and nearly no precipitation the craterous quarried surface and canyon rich land masses of Leonis Minoris are classified as a hostile environment, especially to the ill prepared traveller or off-worlders.

The planet’s capital city, Linnaeus, is located in the northern hemisphere and is a sprawling metropolis doted with hive spires and space ports. Despite being one of the most prosperous cities in the Imperium, Linnaeus is a shadow of it’s former self having declined from the utopia established by Guilliman during the great crusade. Within the curtilage of Linnaeus lies the fortress monastery and seat of power of the Lions Argent Chapter, a military edifice etched into the mountainous topography of the city’s perimeter. The proximity of the Lions Argent Chapter to the system’s governors and councils has become a point of concern for elements of the Ordo Hereticus, who have instigated a number of investigations into the Chapter’s political ties and acquisition of power within the Leonis system, none of these investigations have ever been concluded.

The Leonis Minoris Cluster has seen more than its fare share of war over the millennia, most notably at the hands of several Ork warlords and a direct assault instigated by traitor forces shortly before the thirteenth black crusade. This assault was particularly brutal and focused around the system’s fourth planet, Agora, home to the Libraries of Hypatia, a resource of knowledge second only to the archives of Terra.

Index Astartes: Lions Argent

Honourable to their allies and implacable to their enemies the Lions Argent have proudly thrust their name into greatness alongside chapters of more ancient provenance, despite their relative youth. The Lions Argent firmly uphold the values of the Imperium, recognising that mankind must be united in order to survive, to this end they willing commit forces in support of other organisations in order to protect the Imperium’s future and for Astartes they are uncharacteristically approachable, a trait that has earned them a great deal of respect. Although not fanatical or outspoken about their faith the Lions Argent recognise the Emperor’s divinity, a stance that has put them in good stead with the Ecclesiarchy and the Adeptus Sororitas on the outset of many campaigns. Although their history is shrouded in mystery, testing of the Chapter’s Geneseed has proven the Lions Argent to be a successor of the Dark Angels and thus they can trace their genetic heritage back to Lion El Johnson, despite this they venerate no Primarch dedicating themselves to the Emperor and the Imperium. Furthermore the Lions Argent insistently stand apart from their founding chapter and it’s successors, taking every opportunity to clearly separate themselves from their ‘unforgiven’ cousins, preferring to tread their own path, a stance that has proven beneficial.

Despite their proven genetic lineage the Lions Argent are a Chapter of shadowed origins and history, their first documentation in the records of the Administratum dates to the latter years of M40, however they are believed by some to have been founded as long ago as M37 known then as the Lion Warriors, recognised in some sources as a Dark Angels successor chapter, who disappeared in the second half of M40. With the exception of their genetic ties there is little material evidence to support the theory that the Lion Warriors and the Lions Argent are one and the same Chapter, but the coincidences of their seemly shared history are hard to ignore. If they are indeed the same Chapter, the reasons for their change in livery and name are unknown, at least to outsiders. Inquisitors of the Ordo Hereticus opened investigations into the Lions Argent in the mid 41st millennium, although were abandoned without conclusion for unknown reasons. Shortly before his disappearance Inquisitor Malek-Loth of the Ordo Hereticus speculated that the change in chapter name could be linked to the Chapter’s purposeful separation from their parent legion, the Dark Angels, but this has never been substantiated.

The Lions Argent Chapter are based on the world of Leonis Minoris, a near lifeless rock on the eastern fringe of the Segmentum Solar, with a fortress monastery in the curtilage of the planet’s capital, Linnaeus. The Chapter Master Tiberius Vallarn is politically active within the Leonis System having a seat on the governor’s council and having a rite of veto over decisions deemed to affect the system’s martial capabilities and defence. The Lions Argent recruit from various aspects of Leonis Minoris’ population; selecting suitable aspirants from the planet’s wealthy nobles and the sub-hive gangs alike, thus ensuring a diverse range of candidates for potential induction.

The Lions Argent can be considered a ‘Codex’ Chapter for all intents and purposes, their structure following the guidelines and limitations set out in the Codex Astartes, a trait uncommon for successors of the Dark Angels. This said the Chapter does not follow the great tomb’s teachings as strictly as their first founding cousins, seeing Guilliman’s words as a valuable resource rather than a way of life or unbreakable doctrine. The chapter appears to favour mobile mechanised deployments over infiltration or Drop Pod assaults, a style of warfare that perhaps reflects the capabilities of their home world’s forges, which excel in the production of the venerated Rhino chassis and its variants. It is perhaps because of this that the Lions Argent possess a great many Predator, Whirlwind and Vindicator tanks, more so than many more established Chapters, it is certainly worthy of note that the well stocked armouries of the Lions Argent are enviable by any standard, even to some of the First Founding Chapters.
The Lions Argent possess a great many suits of both MkV ‘heresy’ pattern and MkVI ‘corvus’ pattern power armour, the reasons for this predilection are unknown. It was uncovered by the late Inquisitor Malek-Loth that the Lions Warriors chapter was outfitted with great swathes of the MkV and MkVI armour from the Dark Angel’s stock at their creation, however it should also be noted that the forges of Leonis Minoris were ordered to manufacture both these marks in great quantities during the great heresy, a standing permission that has never been superseded.

The Lions Argent Chapter have an almost knightly aspect, honouring a code of practice and above all protecting the weak in the Emperor’s name. Further reinforcing this is the Chapter’s martial pride, emphasised by intensive close combat training and the favouring of the Sword above all other close combat weapons, not only as a weapon but as a sign of rank and as an incarnation of a warrior’s honour. The Chapter maintains close ties with the Imperial Guard, the Imperial Navy and associated elements such as the Inquisition and the Adeptus Mechanicus, valuing the benefits produced from labouring after maintaining those ties. More often than not Imperial Commanders loathe the interference of the Adeptus Astartes, as it is usually a cold exchange that sees the Emperor’s Angels of Death execute a series of missions and achieve objectives that the Imperial Guard have failed to, however such experiences cannot be attributed to the Lions Argent. Beneficent and candid in their demeanour the Lions Argent are welcomed into most theatres of war by Imperial Commanders, valuing their assistance and holding no resentment against their superior martial prowess.
The Lions Argent have a comprehensive recorded martial history spanning a little over a millennia, the Chapter’s war record is kept in a vault in the fortress monastery, fastidiously updated by the Chapter’s Librarians and serfs. Selected battle honours as follows:

Purging of Elysia: Plagued by the ever present threat of pirates and raiders the Elysia system’s asteroid fields, isolated planetary masses and radiation belts make for a perfect refuge for those who wish not to be found. The Purging of Elysia was a system wide campaign that saw fleet battles on an apocalyptic scale and condemned three planetary bodies to Exterminatus, the sole of purpose of which was to end the piratical menace and restore order to the primary trade routes between Armageddon and the galactic hub. Primarily comprised of fleet engagements and numerous boarding actions the war was largely one sided, the pirates ill equipped to defend against Astartes and Imperial Navy capital ships.
The Lions Argent Chapter committed almost their entire military might to the conflict, save only elements of the seventh and ninth reserve companies, although it should be noted even these saw combat towards the end of the war. The campaign was originally lead by a combined force of the Elysian Military and the Leonis Shock Troops aboard a vast Imperial Navy fleet, which despite early success had great difficulty in engaging the pirate fleets in decisive combats, instead pursuing them deeper into the surrounding wilderness space. With the passing of the sixth standard solar year, the Lions Argent Chapter was brought into the theatre of war with the intent of closing the campaign as quickly as possible. Lead by Chapter Master Tiberius Vallarn the Lions Argent fleet hunted down the last refuges of pirates and mercenaries, condemning three planets to Exterminatus. It should be noted that only one of the three planets condemned was capable of sustaining life with a breathable atmosphere. The intervention of the Lions Argent Chapter saw the war successfully won in seventeen standard Solar months.
For Vallarn’s successful leadership of the campaign which restored one of the four major shipping routes to Terra, he was granted an audience with the Emperor himself and gifted the relic blade Ungula. Seen as a saviour by the trading guilds and governors of Elysia, Vallarn was granted the title Vicarius Consul of Elysia.

Defence of Agora: The Arcadius Hive was almost lost to traitor forces, who assaulted the Leonis Cluster in the latter quarter of M41, the assault is believed to have been instigated by the arch-traitor Ahriman of the excommunicated Thousand Sons and focused on taking the world of Agora. The siege of Arcadius lasted for a little under fourteen standard Terran months with the entire war claiming over 2.1 billion Imperial souls. The traitor’s attack took the Leonis System completely by surprise, almost all of the Lions Argent Chapter were engaged in cleansing the Elysia System and unable to assemble a meaningful counter attack until the closing days of the war, with the exception of the Second Battle Company who were on Leonis Minoris when the fighting began. The war was brought to a bloody conclusion in the ruins of the Library of Hypatia with the arrival of the Lions Argent Fleet supported by a mixed strike force from the Salamanders and Relictors Chapters. Almost forty percent of the library was destroyed in the siege and much of its knowledge lost forever. Captain Dardanus of the Second Battle Company was lorded for his part in the defence, commanding the loyalist forces and slaying two traitor generals in single combat.

Liberation of Verges Secondus: A small agricultural planetoid on the boarder of the Maelstrom Zone in Ultima Segmentum and source of much sort after orchard stock, Verges Secondus is responsible for growing some of the most exquisite fruits and natural grown delicacies in the Imperium. In the early years of the 41st millennium contact was lost with the planet and a small task force including the Lions Argent’s Sixth Reserve Company was dispatched to investigate. Initial reports found the planet’s human populace missing, further investigation revealed the world to have suffered at the hands of a Dark Eldar raiding fleet. Three years of war on the planets surface saw countless engagements with Dark Eldar forces which were ultimately thwarted through the destruction of an ancient portal in the icy wastes of the planets southern pole. The destruction of the portal gate was attributed to a young Tactical Sergeant by the name of Vallarn, for his actions he was promoted to the first company to serve with a Sternguard Squad.

Welcome to a project log for my creations in and around the Leonis Cluster, a small subsector close to Elysian and Armageddon. Home to my custom made chapter; the Lions Argent, a successor to the Dark Angels and a number of othe Imperial Factions. This log will share with you my work as i develop them all in both background and models. I will endeavour to update the first post, as often as the log, with a progress photo and navigation/contents list.

Captain Dardanus Anarian
Master Hoplite, Paladin, Commander of the Lions Argent 2nd Battle Company

Born to the northern aristocracy of Leonis Minoris, Dardanus began his martial training as soon as he was able to grasp a sword, as is the planet’s cultural tradition. Showing exceptional prowess in close quarters combat he was inducted into the Astartes training programme upon his coming of age, where he successfully completed the training and passed all testing with distinction.

The military career of Dardanus Anarian has seen a steady rise through the ranks, most notably fighting as a sergeant with the first company prior to being assigned to the Second Company’s command squad with an impressive list of commendations to his name, rivalling such heroes of Carab Culln of the Red Scorpions and Cato Sicarius of the Ultramarines. With the Second Company command squad Dardanus served with valour in the position of Company Champion before ultimately achieving his captaincy over the Company, a decision that was contested by several other Captains who believed that a more experienced reserve company captain would be a better choice for promotion to command a battle company. Despite this the Chapter Master and the Master of Sanctity gave their support to Dardanus.

An indisputably accomplished warrior Dardanus’ stubborn mentality and refusal to yield complimented the aggressive mechanised deployments of the Second Battle Company, proving himself worth of his Captaincy in the eyes of his peers Dardanus went on to achieve victory after victory sealing his place in the Chapter’s history. In recognition of his accolades Dardanus was elevated to the honourary title of Paladin, a title only four of the Chapter’s Captains hold, granting him a seat on the Chapter’s high command as a personal advisor to the Chapter Master.

Thanks for all the comments folks,

@ 'theconverter15' - not quite right fella: the shoulder pad is actually Huron's Terminator Pad trimmed down to just the Lions head and then sculpted on to a MkII shoulder pad with some miliput to fill the gap and slightly broaden the lion's mane. I am really pleased with the result actually.

@ 'aegis fate' - the shield is from the Forge World event only MkIII armour boarding marine, lovely model.

Thanks for looking, More to follow in the near future!

I have updated the first post with the background i have created for the Lions Argent Chapter, it is still moderately work in progress but thought i'd share none the less.

@ 'Dronevil' - part of the dictionary definition for Argent is as follows;

Heraldry; the metal silver, represented by the colour white
Thus i am using this to argue my case for having my Lion iconography in white, rather than silver.

I am hoping to have a tactical squad sergeant finished today, so will post it up once i'm done.

Sergeant Erastus Tychon
Veteran, Sergeant of the 2nd Tactical Squad, 2nd Battle Company

A veteran of many campaigns Erastus Tychon has served the chapter for nearly three centuries, despite suffering crippling injuries during the Purging of Elysia Campaign. Tychon was shot with a las-cutter at point blank range during a boarding action on a pirate vessel, his wounds so extensive he was considered beyond saving, the apothecary intending to administer the Emperor's Peace, was killed whilst tending to Tychon and it wasn't until the ship was claimed and secured that he was discovered to still be alive. The chapter's Apothecaries reported that a marine with his injuries should not be alive and certainly not conscious. Tychon believes his faith in the Emperor protected from death, whether there is truth in this, none can say. Tychon underwent massive reconstructive surgeries replacing most of his torso, face, an arm and one of his legs with bionics.

The venerable sergeant is complete aside from the chapter icon, which will go on the blank right shoulder pauldron. I am investigating having some white decals made up, so once they are finished and arrive i'll post an updated picture.

Yes the majority of every model will be based around the Forge World armour stock. As for custom decals, i have designed them myself using a combination of photoshop and autocad. as the ability to print them i am contacting local printing companies that are able to print in white ink. a good list can be found here: http://robdebie.home.xs4all.nl/models/decals.htm (http://robdebie.home.xs4all.nl/models/decals.htm)

Thanks for all the kind words folks, the support is very much appreciated, expecially in the early stages of a project. There are more tactical marines on my desk, which will be seeing the pages of this log before long. Ok despite having justification for white lion iconography i am considering the more traditionally associated colour of silver for the icons, whgat do people think?

@Louwie616 - i am sorry to hear that actually, although perhaps some constructive criticism would be a nicer comment to leave? Are you referring to the background or the model?

@ JackDaw - It most certainly does not, the Wolves of Russ are still ticking along nicely, although the Lions Argent are a welcome distraction. i am intending to progress my Wolves some more in the not too distant future.

- - -

Here are the next three work in progress tactical marines, they are awaiting some Umbra pattern Boltguns from Forge World and their custom chapter iconography.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=112644&stc=1&d=1308311293

Also i need to add a little weathering to them. And the previously posted models for that matter.

Saul Tarvitz
17-06-2011, 13:45
I think you should leave the iconography white - after all white is the proper heraldic representation of silver and Chapter badges are nothing if not heraldry. If you think about the Ultramarines, for example, their Chapter badge is properly gold, but on the majority of models and in most artwork it is rendered in yellow - the heraldic gold.

The new guys are looking good but there is one thing I would change on them. I'd use a different colour for the helmet lenses to make them 'pop' more at a distance but that is simply personal preference.

Thanks for the kind words folks, very much appreciated.

@ Saul Tarvitz - I have decided my iconogrpahy will be white as originally planned, thanks for the support and words of reason.

@ Razormasticator - I agree the red on red works. I have decided to retain the red eye lenses, even if they don't stand out as much as a contrasting colour would.

@ Inquisitor Engel - Thanks, i actually paint the model largely before assembly only glusing together the Torso, Legs and Base, Arms and weapons individually, etc... I then assemble once painted, i've not used this technique before but it seems to work well.

Tactical Squad Tychon
2nd Squad, 2nd Battle Company, Lions Argent

Lead by the renown veteran Erastus Tychon, the squad's name sake for identification purposes, the Second Tactical Squad have achieved an impressive list of commendations for their efforts in the theatre of war. Referred to unofficially as the scourge of the Elphias-Miraand, referring to the squad's instrumental actions during the taking of the thus named pirate vessel.

I am really pleased with the tactical squad, they have taken perhaps more time that i would have liked to complete, but the reward is well worth the effort.
The iconography has really helped, a big thanks to Mike Brown for assisting in the printing of the custom icons. The chapter icon lions are shown below:

Lovely and clean, the chapter badge really stands out but I think you could do with adding a bit more shading under the eyes. Its probably just the pictures, but they blend in. A little shading would break it up really well - if you look at the guy in heresy armour in the last pic you can clearly see his eyes where as the larger shots seem to blend in.

Now come on, more space wolves please :D

Absolutely amazing! The background blew me away, and your precise touch as a painter makes the models shine :) I was wondering though why you decided to use red as the eye lens color? I'd probably have gone for something that would contrast nicely with the red of the armor, for example blue with a grayish hue :P

Thank for all the kind words everyone, they are most encouraging, there are currently a number of Assault Marines scattered around my work station in various levels of completion, which with a little luck and a splash of free time will materialise into some more painted models. Only time will tell, ok a small update:

I have been developing the presence of my Astartes in other areas, namely Battlefleet Gothic. So here are my initial Lions Argent Fleet vessels, they are still awaiting name tags, which will come in the form of water slide transfers and when i am feeling brave enough i will paint little lion icons onto them.

Lions Argent Fleet

The Lions Argent Chapter are renown primarily for their proficiency in fleet actions and void based conflict, a reputation that is backed up in force by the Chapterís enviable tonnage of void faring vessels, boasting three Battle Barges, eight Strike Cruisers and over forty combatant Frigates and Destroyer escorts as well as a plethora of support and service vessels. It should be noted that there are few chapterís that can match or better the Lions Argent fleet in ship numbers, even when counting those that are fleet based.
Observations recorded by Inquisitor Malek-Loth of the Ordo Hereticus suggest similarities in fleet deployments and void tactics between the Lions Argent and the Dark Angels, although some are tenuous, it is hard to ignore that both Chapterís share a preference to the Hunter Class Destroyer over other escort frigates and similar classes of ship. The chapters of the unforgiven are well known for their predilection towards the Hunter Class Destroyer, maintaining large flotillas of these vessels within their battle fleets, a trait often linked to their seeming distrust in the Imperial Navy. The latter trait is not shared by the Lions Argent, with whom the Imperial Navy works alongside more often not.
The Lions Argent fleet has fought in concert with Battlefleet Leonis on so many occasions that the ship's command crews are well aquatinted with one another and the fleets are very much considered to be a singular force, a fact that draws interest with the Ordo Hereticus.

Conor. Perpetior. Contemnor!

It should be noted this is the motto of the Voss Forge World taken from the ‘Shield of Voss’ incantation, adopted by Battlefleet Leonis and inscribed upon the bridge of every vessel in the Battlefleet.

Battlefleet Leonis
Imperial Navy Battlefleet, The Leonis System, Segmentum Solar

Battlefleet Leonis is responsible for the defence of a vast amount of space; the Leonis system although largely un-colonised by the Imperium is intersected by no less than thirty seven major shipping lanes, linking Terra and the core worlds of the Segmentum Solar with both the Armageddon and the Elysia system as well linked jump points to wider horizons. The primary colonisation of the Leonis System is the system’s name sake, the Leonis Cluster, a collection of planets orbiting a youthful star at the intersection of the Voss-Terra trade route. The strategically important location of the Leonis System gives it a status belying its material worth, not being renowned for exports or military might the system’s only major claims are that the Lions Argent Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes and the Ordo Xenos libraries of Hypatia call the system home.

The Leonis Cluster and, by association, Battlefleet Leonis have close ties with the Forge World of Voss Prime, an Adeptus Mechanicus world in reasonable proximity to Armageddon, thus it comes as no surprise that Battlefleet Leonis is primarily supplied and serviced by the Voss Ship Yards, the relationship is evident in far more than just the Battlefleet’s shared aesthetic. The Adeptus Mechanicus ties from Voss Prime course through the Leonis Cluster like circuits in a machine, almost without exception the hundreds of thousands of Adepts and Savants serving the Cluster’s planets, installations and shipping stem from Voss Prime both directly and indirectly. Another affiliation of note between Voss Prime and Battlefleet Leonis is that of the Collegia Titanica Legio Invigilata, who almost without exception travel under the escort of Battlefleet Leonis.

Battlefleet Leonis operates under the command of Lord-Admiral J. Sansky, senior ranking Imperial Navy officer of the Leonis System operating primarily from the ‘Ira Infernum’ an Emperor Class Battleship and flagship of Battlefleet Leonis. The Leonis System is interspersed with large areas of uncharted and forgotten space, havens for pirates and mercenaries, this leaves the Imperial occupied system somewhat fragmented, a complication that requires an intense Naval presence to safe-guard the myriad of shipping lanes and inter-system jump points. As such Battlefleet Leonis is segregated into seven major naval Battle-Groups, which are further segregated as fleet deployments require. The third battle-group under the command of Admiral Tolwyn, deploys it’s vessels in the outer reaches of the Leonis System, far from the light of Leonis-Panthera-D365R7, the Leonis System’s primary star and centre of the Leonis Cluster.

Under the command of Admiral Tolwyn the Third Battle-Group has earned for itself a string of commendations and accolades entered into Battlefleet Leonis’ role of honour and recorded in the venerated archives of Hypatia with the highest respects. Admiral Tolwyn commands from a Retribution Class Battleship, ‘Gloria Imperator Lux’ constructed and commissioned by the shipyards of Voss Prime for service with Battlefleet Leonis. It should be noted that every vessel of the Third Battle-Group can trace its manufacture or refit, even if only in part, to the shipyards of Voss Prime.

The following progress photo will be updated upon the completion of any units/ships for the Battlefleet.

Durus Voss
Armageddon Class Battlecruiser

30megatonnes in displacement, 5.019km in length and 0.802 a beam the Durus Voss is a vessel of considerable size, on equal pegging to almost all front line Cruisers and Battlecruisers of the Imperial Navy.

Upon the last official archive submission the Durus Voss had a compliment of 98,497 souls.

The Durus Voss is a recent addition to Battlefleet Leonis developed alongside the early designs of the Armageddon project in concert with the Armageddon Forge World. As with almost all Armageddon Battlecruisers the Durus Voss has served the Imperial Navy in a former life; serving as a reserve ship in Battlefleet Elysia as a Lunar Class Cruiser.

Since it's refit at the Voss Forge World, the Durus Voss, has boasted an impressive tally of kills and victories fighting in several glorious campaigns, the most notable of which was the 'Purging of Elysia' where the venerable ship enjoyed 36 confirmed kills on pirate vessels an installations.

Intono Mortis
Endeavour Class Light Cruiser

22 megatonnes in displacement, 3.809km in length and 0.499km a beam the Durus Voss is a vessel of considerable size for a light cruiser and carried a fearsome array of weaponry equal to that of a vessel of a Larger Class.

Upon the last official archive submission the Durus Voss had a compliment of 67,583 souls.

The Intono Mortis is a ship of renown amongst Battlefleet Leonis, pressed into service before the proper rites had been performed the ship was released to the void with out a name. That name came with the ship's infamous reputation; inflicting the death blow on a Traitor Battleship, the 'Malicious Thunder' during a major fleet engagement to repel a chaos incursion into the Segmentum Solar.

Veteran Sergeant Lykos Dyon
7th Squad, 2nd Battle Companym, Lions Argent

Lykos Dyon is a bear of warrior, even by Astartes standards. Lykos has declined promotion to the Company's command squad on 2 occassions, stating his preference for Assault orientated warfare, combat drops and high altitude insertions.
Lykos Dyon served with the 1st Veteran Company for a quarter century prior to being transfered to the 2nd Battle Company, during his time with the 1st Company Lykos Dyon established his name as a ferocious member of the Vanguard Veteran Squad with which he served.

Lykos boasts the blazing lion motif upon his power-fist, a symbol of honour amongst the Lions Argent and representative of consecutive feats of valour leading to victory.

As Sergeant of the 7th Squad, 2nd Battle Company, Lykos Dyon is known as un unstoppable force of martial strength, leading almost all of the Company's Assaults at the apex of the spear tip. Respected by his peers, feared by his enemies and valued by his commanders Lykos Dyon is everything an assault marine could aspire to be.

thank you for all the kind words folks, it is very much appreciated, it is always encouraging when people take the time to read a project log, let alone comment.

@ 'BrotherTearz' - With regard to the decal sheets there really isn't much to it, i found some images online that i liked and that were suitable, high resolution images that are 'clean' is essential, if it looks a little blurred, don't bother. I found shutterstock images (http://www.shutterstock.com/?gclid=CJbDoqf89KoCFXAKtAodei5qIg) is a good site to start, they come for a reasonable price considering how many times you will use them too. I then arranged these to on a page and scaled them to appropriate sizes in Adobe Photoshop, but any similar software will do. Once you have created your sheet of decals, you can purchase decal paper from hobby craft, or online, i bought some from eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2897.m570.l1313&_nkw=water+slide+decal+paper&_sacat=See-All-Categories). Now providing you don't want to print white you can print these on laser or inkjet printers depending on the paper type.

If you do want white ink, which i did, i scoured the model hobby world to identify people who could do it. If found a couple through a model train website that were willing to help, very nice people and reasonably priced. Have a look around, if your stuck PM me and i'll find you the contact details.

Assault Demi-Squad Dyon
7th Squad, 2nd Battle Company, Lions Argent

Lead by the imposing character, Lykos Dyon, the 7th Assault squad has achieved a string of accolades and honours in battle against a plethora of enemies. the Squad operate in echo of their sergeant's mentality; as an imposingly aggressive hammer at the spear tip of the 2nd Battle Company's engagements.

The 7th Squad have earned for themselves such a reputation that when the chapter marches in procession through the streets of Linnaeus, on their home world of Leonis Minoris, they often march ahead of the rest of their company, only preceded by the company Captain and his command squad.

Codicier Mydas Adrastus
Keeper of the 9th Vault and Illuminator of Baacus

Codicier Mydas Adrastus is a wise and venerable librarian, well versed in wielding the preternatural power of the warp and channeling it's myriad falsities and echos to divine the future, thus it is that Mydas Adrastus is counted amongst the ancient librarian order of the Corvidae, a seer of the future.

Although primarily a academic and shepherd of the chapter, Adrastus is an accomplished combatant, his martial prowess enhanced by the tides of warp power he has mastership over. Bending them to his will he becomes a warrior of legend, an avatar of seemingly unstoppable power. As do all librarians to hold the rank of Codicier.

Mydas Adrastus is keeper of the the 9th Vault, a chamber of the chapter's librarium within their Fortress Monastery on Leonis Minoris. The 9th Vault is home to the divinitors, the order of the Corvidae. Mydas Adrastus was one of the chapter's council that spoke against the promotion of Dardanus Anarian to the rank of captaincy, believing a wiser, more tempered warrior of greater experience should be have been granted captaincy over the 2nd Battle Company. Thus in a humourous twist of fate, the chapter's chief librarian assigned Mydas Adrastus to the 2nd Battle Company, to guide the young captain and oversee his captaincy and advise as required. This is an assignment that Mydas resents, but is dutiful to none the less.

Tactical Demi-Squad Glaukus
3rd Tactical Squad, 2nd Battle Company, Lions Argent

Tactical Demi-Squad Glaukus, 5 brother-marines of the 3rd Tactical Squad, lead by the infamous Sergeant Ovid Glaukus, a veteran of over six centuries of battlefield experience against a myriad of xeno races.

As one of the honoured tactical squads of a line company the warriors of squad Glaukus, whether split into demi-squads for combat mission of fighting at full strength, are expected to be amongst the first wave in the theatre of war. Like all Squads of all ten companies the 3rd Tactical Squad receive the Emperor's blessing and the litany of purity at the ceremony of the fallen ahead of their company brethren.

Sergeant Glaukus is a veteran of tempered experience and a master squad commander, valued by his superiors and his peers alike. Ovid Glaukus favours a simple but flexible approach to war, believing added complexity increases the likely hood of faluire. Unlike many of the Chapter's more enthusiastic and youthful sergeants, Glaukus, favours the use of a Boltgun over more specialist weaponry and war-relics, albeit with a melta attachement.

Inquisitor Leto Valaquentus
Inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos, Patriarch of the Drakus Dynasty
Protectorate of the Library of Hypatia, Hunter of the Dark City

Inquisitor Leto Valaquentus is a solitary man, driven to the brink of madness by his obsessive pursuit of the Dark Eldar, though it was not always so: Leto Valaquentus was born Faade a descendent of the House of Drakus a wealthy rogue trader dynasty dating back to the Great Crusade. Faade was born on Terra in the northern europa region believed to have once been part of the ancient Britania. Faade’s mother served as a senior Adept in the Imperial Navy who at the apex of her career controlled the trading guilds and shipping quotas of the Segmentum Solar, a venerated position of extreme import. Faade’s mother was an extremely talented woman, she eventually retired, using her family’s status, to one of Elysia’s verdant forest moons, the system being her ancestral home and the seat of the Drakus family’s power.

The young Faade, despite his mother’s objections, was inducted into the Schola Progenium and began training for induction into the Commissariat. It should be noted that Faade’s family were promised he would graduate as a ranking commissar, befitting of his families status, designated for service aboard an Imperial Capital Ship or assignment of similar prestige. During Faade’s first term at the Schola Progenium the Elysia system suffered at the hands of a series of Dark Eldar raids, amongst the enslaved were Faade’s Family and Mother. With the Drakus family all but wiped out Faade inherited the family’s warrant of trade and became the sole heir to the Drakus Dynasty. Upon graduation as a Progena, Faade was assigned to the Overlord Class Battle Cruiser ‘Niobe’, fresh from the Damocles Crusades, destined for return to the Jovian shipyards for re-fit and repairs. Thus Faade’s first year of service aboard the ‘Niobe’ was served in the orbit of Jupiter. Upon completion of repair works the Niobe was released for reassignment, using his family ties and influence Leto ensured the ‘Niobe’ was assigned to Battlefleet Leonis which was heavily engaged in a sector wide operation of exterminatus upon piratical bases and mercenary strongholds littering the Elysia System.

On route to the Elysia System, the ‘Niobe’ intercepted astro-telepathic messages describing the Leonis system as under siege, although Faade objected the Captain of the ‘Niobe’ translated back into real-space on the boarders of the Leonis Cluster to investigate the situation. Translating into a warzone of fleet engagements the ‘Niobe’ took crippling damage and drifted in-system forcing the crew to evacuate to the war-torn surface of Agora. Joining the surface conflict Faade and some surviving crewmen were pressed into service alongside the Leonis Shock Troops defending the Arcadius Hive, amongst the defenders were several Inquisitors of the Ordo Xenos in residence at the libraries of Hypatia, situated deep below the Hive. During the battles final act, the survivors made their last stand in the ruined libraries deep below the planet’s surface, the ranking Astartes Commander, Captain Anarian of the Lions Argent, ordered Faade to masquerade as one of the dead Inquisitors and order an orbital bombardment on the ruined Hive. The bombardment destroyed thousands of the traitor force and delayed the engagement long enough for reinforcements to arrive and liberate the survivors.
With the engagement concluded Captain Anarian sealed Faade’s fate as a member of the Ordo Xenos lording the fake Inquisitor as instrumental in the defence of Hive Arcadius. With the resident Inquisitors slain and much of the Ordo Xenos facility destroyed there remained no contestants to Faade’s validity as one of the Emperor’s Inquisition. Thus it came to pass that Faade, heir to the Drakus Dynasty became Inquisitor Leto Valaquentus and was made the protectorate of the Libraries of Hypatia. Faade Drakus was officially recorded amongst the slain onboard the cruiser Niobe.

Officially ranking as an Inquisitor and in possession of the Drakus family’s Warrant of Trade Leto Valaquentus began what would become his life long pursuit of the Dark Eldar race, a pursuit that would eventually see the ruin of his family in both name and fortune. Leto Valaquentus seeks the dark city of Commorragh above all other goals and considerations, clinging to the hope that his family and mother still live, imprisoned on the Xenos world. This thread of hope that Leto grasps to has driven him to boarder on madness, like a bad dream that keeps him from sleep and haunts his every waking hour.

Leto Valaquentus has accrued about himself a retinue of loyal companions, skilled individuals to assist in his hunt for the Dark City and the destruction of its Xenos inhabitants. Not only do they serve this purpose but they are loyal to Imperium and their varying personalities and conflicting countenances act as measure to the increasingly erratic Inquisitor and his futile hunt for the Dark City. The most notable of his companions are as follows:

‘Paige’

Former Xeno-Biologist Archivist and Data-savant from the libraries of Hypatia, liberated from service after the Defence of Agora and requisitioned into the service of the Inquisitor. Possessing a vast wealth of knowledge on xenos species, cultures and weaponry Paige acts as a walking encyclopaedia and data resource for the Inquisitor, able to recall detailed information in mere seconds.

Astro-Telepath assigned to the service of the Ordo Xenos and Inquisitor Valaquentus after liberation from the pirate vessel ĎVisceral Furyí taken for the Emperor during the Purging of Elysia Campaign. Crax is unusually charismatic for a member of the Adeptus Astra Telepathica, his dry sense of humour and cynical views making him a valued advisor to the Inquisitor, over the years Crax has become more of a friend than an operative to deeply troubled Leto Valaquentus.

Tactical Squad Glaukus
3rd Tactical Squad, 2nd Company, Lions Argent

Under the steadfast and stern command of Veteran Sergeant Alcon Glaukus the 3rd Tactical Squad has earned an exceptional service record, as is expected of any squad of every battle company.

Notable battle honours:

Sly'aarth Delta II - Operation Extractus-Gamma. The 2nd Battle Company undertook a multi-objective opperation on the Adeptus Biologis Orbital Research Station Sly'aarth Delta II. The 3rd and 4th Tactical Squads were tasked with securing the stations data cores and extracting them to safety, the mission was a success. During the opperation Tactical Squad Glaukus suffered 3 casualties, 1 fatal, with 114 confirmed kills.

Defence of Agora - Defence of the Libraries of Hypatia and Hive Arcadius. The 2nd Battle Company oversaw and participated as the key stone in the defence of Hive Arcadius and the sub-level libraries of Hypatia, a bloody and unforgiving war of attrition that saw a great many battle brothers injured and killed. During the several months of war all of tactical squad Glaukus suffered injuries of varying severity, 7 battle brothers received the Emperor's peace.

‘Niddler’

A vat grown cherubim-servitor from the artisan forges of Pandawum created as a decorative statement of wealth and power for the late Lady Drakus of the notorious Rogue Trader dynasty. With heightened self-awareness and cognitive function above that of ‘regular’ cherubim, Niddler is considered as one of the Nephilim, albeit not a true-nephilim. Niddler was the sole survivor of the Dark Eldar raids that saw the death or capture of the Drakus family and the destruction for several Elysian colonies. Retrieved by the Drakus Dynasty’s sole heir, Inquisitor Leto Valaquentus, Niddler serves the inquisitor directly undertaking mundane tasks, performing low-key reconnaissance and is valued greatly as a living link to Leto’s late mother. Niddler, possibly due to trauma or faulty programming, has developed a ravenous greed for a particular fruit grown on one of the verdant moons of Elysia.

+++ Extract from the archives of Inquisitor Malek-Loth, Ordo Hereticus +++
+++ Extract A5571-DLW7-F2 +++
+++ Subject: Investigating the suspect histories of the Lions Argent Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes +++

The below extract has been extracted, with great trouble on my part, from what I believe to be the digital memoirs of Balian Raphael, the Silver Lion, first and only Grand Master of the Lion Warriors Chapter.

“Do not begin to question me Anaziel, you may hold authority here but do not forget I too have walked the halls of the Tower of Angels and wandered the catacombs of ancient Calliban. Do not think you are unique in your disposition as Supreme Grand Master… +++ data missing +++ …the forbidden secrets of our sacred Legion spread further than you dare to dream Anaziel. I will not be damned for the sins of others, I will not see my Chapter condemned at the hands of ill-gotten traditions upheld by weak superiors shrouded in delusions of self-preservation… +++ data missing +++ …too scared to act for the good of the Imperium! We tread a different path to you Anaziel, the Lions of Calliban will not be intimidated into conformity by your misguided leadership… +++ data missing +++ …the rest of the inner circle may be too jaded to see the truth of it but I am not!”

The prior extract is, I believe, to be from conversation between Grand Master Balian Raphael and Supreme Grand Master Anaziel of the Lion Warriors and Dark Angels respectively. It should be noted that shortly after the implied date of this extract the Lion Warriors, for reasons as yet unknown, disappear from Imperial records, I speculate that the Lion Warriors were not lost in action as some sources state. I postulate that the Lion Warriors and Lions Argent are in fact one and the same, taking their new name and livery from Balian Raphael.

+++ End of Extract +++

Condemned for crimes of cowardice, dessertion and murder. Found Guilty on seventy two counts and sentenced for mono-savant conversion, to face de-evolution and re-assignment in the service of the Ommnissiah and the God-Emperor.

A fate as yet to be enacted, rescued and recruited from the ruins of the fleet they were being transported upon following an ill-fated engagement with xenos raiders. Now serving the will of Inquisitor Leto Valaquentus, a favourable fate to becoming a mono-task servitor!

Watcher

Like their parent Legion the Lions Argent are, on occassion, accommpanied by the mysterious half-ling watchers, an unidentified race of psychically astute creatures. There are no records of one the these watchers having ever been examined by the Adeptus Biologis, it should be noted that the arms of the Watcher can be seen here and appear human-like in nature, whether this is reflective of the rest of the Watcher's appearence remains unknown.

The watcher pictured here has been seen several times in the presence of Chapter Master Tiberius Vallarn, baring his sword scabbard into battle and in ceremony.

Silis Vigilum
Endeavour Class Light Cruiser

22 megatonnes in displacement, 3.809km in length and 0.499km a beam the Silis Vigilum is a vessel of considerable size for a light cruiser and carried a fearsome array of weaponry equal to that of a vessel of a Larger Class.

Upon the last official archive submission the Silis Vigilum had a compliment of 67,303 souls.

The Silis Vigilum was commissioned for service with Battlefleet Leonis on the same date as her sister ship, the Inoto Mortis. Unlike her sister ship the Silis Vigilum received all the proper rites of activation and initiation prior to her launch. The ship was crippled in her first engagement, by the traitor battleship 'Malicious Thunder', and spent the following two years back in dry dock undergoing extensive repairs.

Ferit Squadron
Cobra-Zeus Class Destroyers

The Cobra-Zeus Class Destroyer was developed by Voss Forge World as an alternative design to the typical Cobra Class destroyer, which Mars retained much of the construction rights.

The Cobra-Zeus is for all intents and purposes a class of near identical specification to the standard cobra pattern destroyer, although heavier in weight and thus boasting a more powerful core and engines to compensate. This inturn has reduced the ship's internal spaces making service aboard a Cobra-Zeus Pattern Destroyer an unenviable assignment.

Ferit Squadron proudly includes 6 of these formidable destroyers, all of which have served Battlefleet Leonis for just over half a millenia.

Seeing everything together like that makes me smile Petay - you get a much better sense of how everything works together visually in terms of the armour colour and the posing. I'm a wee bit (alright a fair bit) jealous of this army - its certainly about the only thing inspiring me to dust off my own Astartes and get the army finished.

Looking forward to seeing more.

First up today is an update on my Assault Sergeant, although previously complete i decided i wanted to alter his wargear, thusly here he is (i've repeated his fluff again here too):

Assault Squad Dyon
7th Squad, 2nd Battle Company, Lions Argent

Within a codex Chapter's Battle Company the 20 assault marines are the teeth of the fighting force, albeit for strike or counter-strike, making marines serving in Assault Squads a fierce breed. It is the job of an assault marine to engage his enemy, traitor, heretic, xenos in bloody and unforgiving close quarter's combat, and it is in this crucible that Assault Squad Dyon excel.

Assault Squad Dyon are the 2nd Battle Company's spear tip, leading the majority of the Company's assaults and more often than not drawing first blood in any given engagement.
Assault Squad Dyon are a highly decorated unit, boasting many comendations and formal recognitions of valour.

Ok, small update; here is the first of my Sternguard Veterans. The concept behind them is that they are experts in ship-to-ship boarding actions, a style of warfare for which the Chapter is particularly renown for. So they get the best tools for the job; MkIII Iron Armour, Boarding Assault Shields and Special Ammunition!

So here is the first of 5 Sterngaurd Veterans, note the combi-melta.

Veteran Sergeant Thyrsis Pheidon
9th Sternguard Squad, 1st Veteran Company

A true titan of battle Thyrsis Pheidon has a reputation of being steadfast and dependable, leading the 9th Sternguard Squad with stict determination. Having earned for himself a gret many honours during the Purging of Elysia Campaign and the fleet engagements to counter Abaddon's 13th Black Crusade, Pheidon is lorded as a Chapter asset.

Pheidon and the 9th Sternguard Squad have proven their worth time and time again, found in the thickest fighting, outnumbered but never outmatched. As has becoming common place in the Lions Argent Chapter the Sternguard Veterans of the 1st Company bear boarding shields to enhance their durability and increase their defence taking on battlefield roles where other Chapter's would use suits of Tactical Dreadnought Armour. The Lions Argent Chapte have but two dozen suits of Terminator Armour and thus they only see war in the most dire of circumstances.

"Suffer not the witch to live, forgive not those who commit heresy and cleanse those who display mutation"

- Opening prayer of the Imperator Divinitatus Puritas, adopted teachings of the Ordo Hereticus

"There is no greater transgression than to betray the Emperor's will; for a normal man there may be atonement for such a sin in death, but for a member of the Astartes, even the grave cannot hold suffering enough to pay for this crime"

- Lord High Commander Carab Culln, Chapter Master of the Red Scorpions, recorded during the Badab War.

- - -

Lord Inquisitor Iccarus Laan
Inquisitor of the Ordo Hereticus
Lord-Marshal of the Solaris Conclave
‘Auditorii Imperator’
Prosecutor-Exterminatus of the Puriss-D’ar Subsector

Lord Inquisitor Iccarus Laan of the Ordo Hereticus is venerated and feared in almost equal measure, renowned for his relentlessly harsh prosecution of the enemies of the Imperium. The most famous example of which is the methodical exterminatus of the Puriss-D’ar Subsector, of which no less that eleven planetary bodies were put to the sword for heresy and crimes against Holy-Terra.

Born on the world of Leonis Minoris, Iccarus Laan was a youth with promising potential and at an early age was identified as having the Pariah Gene and as such was forcibly recruited into the Adeptus Astra Telepathica. Testing and training proved that Iccarus Laan was able to exercise control over his gift, suppressing it’s effect at will, a near unheard of talent amongst Pariahs and thus was handed over to the Inquisition for more advanced training. Sent to the Solaris Conclave, a galactically stationary asteroid complex on the outer reaches of Segmentum Solar, Iccarus Laan spent the majority of his adolescent life in relative isolation, learning the ways of the Ordo Hereticus and honing his skills to benefit the God-Emperor in a more direct manner. Eventually Iccarus Laan was assigned to the tutorage of Jubal Malek-Loth, an experienced Inquisitor of the Ordo Hereticus, tasked with the investigation of corruption in the Adeptus Astartes. Under Malek-Loth’s mentoring Iccarus Laan became a gifted agent of the inquisition and after a century of service was inducted into its ranks, inaugurated as an Inquisitor of the Ordo Hereticus.

Laan’s first assignment as an Inquisitor was to the world of the Androus-Delta in the Puriss-D’ar subsector, assigned to a mixed task force dispatched establish Imperial control following the rebellion by the system governor. The exact details of what events unfolded in the Puriss-D’ar Subsector are shrouded in secrecy, however it is known that all eleven worlds were condemned by Order of Exterminatus and the system is now off limits by mandate of the Ordo Malleus and the High Lords of Terra. Whatever horrors were uncovered in the Puriss-D’ar Subsector over nineteen billion souls were condemned to death by the signature of Inquisitor Iccarus Laan, earning him the title Prosecutor-Exterminatus.

Over the following three centuries the evolving career of Iccarus Laan lead him back to the Solaris Conclave, where he became a preeminent figure with a merciless reputation. After instigating the successful intervention of the Lions Argent Chapter in the ‘Purging of Elysia’ campaign, and bringing the conflict to an acceptable close, Iccarus Laan was appointed raised to the rank of Lord-Inquisitor, a suitable reflection on his achievements. Shortly after Iccarus Laan’s empowerment to the title of Lord Inquisitor, his former mentor Malek-Loth mysteriously disappeared whilst investigating the Lions Argent Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes. Malek-Loth’s investigations aimed to uncover the truth of the Lions Argent’s shrouded origins, Malek-Loth believed that the Lions Argent were once the Lion Warriors, a successor chapter of the Dark Angels, although the evidence uncovered has been long since lost and was speculative at best. Troubled by the disappearance of his mentor, Iccarus Laan has focused a great deal of his attention on the Lions Argent Chapter and their activities, especially those of the Chapter Master; who’s acquisition of political power and martial influence extend far further than is acceptable for an Astartes Commander.

Despite the events of Puriss-D’ar, for which Iccarus Laan will forever be remembered for, the apprehension and prosecution of the renegade Governer-General Il’shar Borsk remains as one of his most notable actions. The Governer-General in question was heralded as a living saint by the Ecclesiarchy having rid several systems of green skins in an accelerated campaign of extermination, a campaign that was concluded in near supernatural speed. As is the process of being confirmed as a living saint, the subject must be accepted by both the Ecclesiarchy and the Inquisition, however investigations by Lord-Inquisitor Iccarrus Laan concluded that the newly self-appointed Governor General was in fact guilty of Extremis Diabolus, being under the influence of a daemon and using un-natural means. In the eyes of the Inquisition the accusations proved correct and Governor-General Il’shar Borsk was executed by the Ordo Hereticus. For his foresight in this matter and exemplar record of service Iccarus laan was appointed as Lord-Marshal of the Solaris Conclave. It should be noted that this position is one of great power in the Segmentum Solar, giving Iccarus Laan political sway over a great many Inquisitorial agents from a number of Ordos, furthermore Iccarus Laan reports directly the Inquisitorial Representative of the Senatorum Imperialis, a recognised High Lord of Terra.

Following the ‘Purging of Elysia’ campaign, Lord Inquisitor Iccarus Laan took custodianship over the strike vessel Oncilla Felidae. A blockage runner of renown that dates from the early days of the Imperium, the Oncilla Felidae represents one of the finest vessels of its class, boasting a great many forgotten technologies and systems of a far superior age. Under the command of Lord Inquisitor Iccarus Laan, the Oncilla Felidae directly serves the interests Ordo Hereticus and carries a reputation comparable to that of its Master. The contemporary reputation of Lord Inquisitor Iccarus Laan is one of relentless pursuit and merciless prosecution, a feared inquisitor of the Ordo Hereticus whose name has become a byword for the application of overwhelming force against those found wanting in the eyes of the Imperium. It is of no doubt that the name of Iccarus Laan will last through the ages and be remembered as an Inquisitor of undisputed conviction.

Chaplain Patroclus Almarec
Adjutant Executioner, Chaplain of the 2nd Battle Company

A dour and unsubtle warrior of brute force and direct action, reputed to speak his mind regardless of the company he keeps it is said that if his Brother Astartes knew fear, they would fear Patroclus Almarec. To most he is a stern and uncompromising weapon of the Emperor’s wrath, cold and merciless, however to those battle brothers privileged enough to fight at his side he is a charismatic leader of men, an orator on par with the remembrancers of old. Almarec understands the need for a sinister and fearful reputation and thus labours to ensure it is maintained despite his more placid and approachable nature. Despite his seemingly contradictory nature Almarec is the epitome of a spiritual leader, believing utterly in the Chapter Cult and the Emperor’s divinity, he is faith incarnate.

Patroclus Almarec has served as Chaplain to the 2nd Battle Company for a little under a century, promoted to the position following the entombing of his predecessor into the sarcophagus of a Chapter Dreadnought. As Chaplain, Almarec is a master wordsmith delivering unwavering rhetoric and inspiring his Battle-Brothers to ever greater feats of valour and heroism.

It has fallen to Patroclus Almarec to serve as Adjutant Executioner to the Chapter Master, a highly venerated position, if not a solemn duty. It is the job of the Chapter Executioner to execute any prisoners of war taken and tortured for information. Although the position is seemly at odds with Almarec's well humoured nature, he performs his duty with unflinching dedication.

Justicar Tristan Baughan
Battle-Brother of the Grey Knight Chapter, Adeptus Astartes
Chamber Militant of the Ordo Malleus
Aspirant-Paladin assigned to Lord-Inquisitor Iccarus Laan

A Battle-Brother of outstanding reputation, Tristan Baughan boasts a most impressive war record, having fought in a succession of wars against the forces of chaos, including seventy three engagements during the incursion of Abaddonís 13th Black Crusade alone.

Justicar Tristan Baughan is marked for great things, widely regarded as a potential for future promotion to the rank of Brother Captain. Having a record of instrumental actions in the banishing of a number of daemonic menaces, including three greater daemons over his four centuries of service, Baughan has bee selected to undertake the trails to become a chapter Paladin, to undertake such trials is to succeed or die. As an Aspirant-Paladin Baughan has completed six of the eight trials required, a feat worthy of record in its own right.

The assignment to Lord-Inquisitor Iccarus Laan is a one of great honour, to accompany an Inquisitor as advisor and warrior is a testing and gloried assignment indeed, especially where Iccarus Laan is concerned, a relentlessly harsh and uncompromising Inquisitor and a Pariah. The latter fact here being the most testing for a tempered battle psyker such as Tristan Baughan, for to be in the company of a Ďblankí is to have his connection with the warp severed and his preternatural powers denied. Thus is it that Tristan Baughan has to fight by more conventional means when in the presence of Lord-Inquisitor Iccarus Laan. It is perhaps this latter sentiment that explains Baughanís wargear privileges, carrying into battle a mighty Nemesis Daemon Hammer, a weapon of extreme potency even without the psychic enhancement of its wielder.

@ 'Punkfish' - The shields are simply fantastic, they come with an integral arm (mkVII plate for those who have an attention to detail) which holds the shield in the perfect pose, allowing for a little adjustment either for a moving marine, see my running sternguard or a phalanx style guard. Very nice indeed.

Champion Drakus Cassander
Brother-Champion of the 2nd Battle Company

A swordsman of skill and a duellist of proven ability Drakus Cassander is the current Company Champion to the Lions Argent 2nd Battle Company, a giant of a marine whose muscular physique fills his ancient MkIII battle plate. Cassander boasts a most impressive tally of kills, having more confirmed kills that any other marine in his company, including Captain Dardanus Anarian himself.

Although a warrior of undisputable skill, his arrogance and ill-discipline are at odds with his position as Company Champion; too many times has Cassander broken formation, ignored orders for restraint and acted in favour of self glorification at the potential expense of the mission. He is a marked man, one whose destiny is watched closely by the Chaplaincy. Despite his failings, Cassander seems to have found favour under Captain Dardanus Anarian, who rewarded his slaying of no less than three traitor champions during the defence of the Arcadius Hive with the position of the Company Champion.

The Order of the Hoplite Cohort

The Lions Argent Chapter boasts a formidable fighting force that furthers the legendary defensive capabilities of the Adeptus Astartes. Formed primarily for siege warfare and ship-to-ship boarding actions many of the Chapterís Veterans have been trained in the use of Combat Shields, Boarding Shields and Storm Shields, wielding them all with great effect. The Chapter Veterans trained in this manner are known as Hoplites, part of the Veteran Order of the Hoplite Cohort. The Chapterís requirement for this style of warfare have stemmed from their apparent lack of Tactical Dreadnought Armour, which would normally be fielding in such circumstances as boarding actions and tunnel warfare. The chapter has but two dozen suits of Terminator Armour, all of which are sacred war relics and fielded only in the direst of circumstances.

At the founding of the Hoplite training programme, twenty of the Chapterís Vanguard Veterans were equipped with Storm Shields and Power Swords and were further trained in both aggressive and defensive styles of warfare. The training programme focused on their application in boarding actions, where shields in lieu of Tactical Dreadnought Armour make advancing under fire a more manageable task. With their success it was decided that the programme should be expanded, thus it was that twenty of the Chapterís Sternguard Veterans were trained in the extensive use of Combat Shields and Boarding Shields. The combination of this enhanced protection and the specialist munitions the Sternguard Veterans sport makes for a deadly mid-range warrior, capable of laying down huge amounts of fire whilst proving implacable in the face of enemy assault.

The training and management of the Hoplite Cohort programme falls to the Master Hoplite; currently Captain Dardanus Anarian of the Second Battle Company, former Second Company Champion and Vanguard Hoplite. Widely acknowledged as the finest warrior to ever heft a shield in the theatre of war, Captain Anarian excels in the fighting styles of the Hoplite Cohorts and as such, where possible, the Second Company of Dardanus Anarian and the Order of the Hoplite Cohort forms the vanguard of the Chapterís assaults, specialising in ship-to-ship boarding actions and Siege warfare.

Stormraven Gunship Omega Four

Despite honouring the world of Leonis Minoris as their adopted home, the Lions Argent Chapter are primarily fleet based, boasting an impressive amarda of warships, frigates and support vessels. As is the case with the majority of fleet based chapters, the Lions Argent have a large compliment of landing craft, gunships, assault boats and void attack craft, amongst them the infamous Stormraven Gunship.

The Stormraven Gunship, made famous by the Angels of Sanguinius and the Chamber Millitant of the Ordo Malleous, is used by a number of the chapters throughout the Imperium, despite beliefs to the contrary. The Stormraven Gunship is a valued asset in the armouries of the Lions Argent, combining the qualities of the legendary Thunderhawk Gunship and the agility of a front line fighter. Used primarily as a support gunship to ground forces the Lions Argent employ the Stormraven alongside mechanised formations ensuring that the rapidly advancing battle companies and spearheads assaults are backed with substantial air support.

Stormraven Gunship Omega Four, along with its sister ship Omega Three is currently assigned to serve with the Second Battle Company, deploying from the strike cruiser 'Honoris Agora'.

The Leonis Legion
Imperial Guard Regiments of the Leonis Cluster | Lions Argent Chapter

The battle formations and hierarchies that became known colloquially as the Leonis Legion were first laid down following the ill fated ĎSiege of the Leonis Clusterí by traitor and chaos forces during the latter half of the 41st Millennium, although formal sanction was not granted until the breaking of the 42nd Millennium. During the ĎSiege of the Leonis Clusterí the systemís allocated battlefleet and armed forces were pressed into serving the ĎPurging of Elysiaí crusade in the neighbouring sub-sector leaving the remaining PDF forces and Astartes contingents to defend against the Chaos incursion. In the face of this onslaught the PDF and Astartes were forced to amalgamate their military assets to effectively defend the system. This meant an ad-hoc integration of the limited number of Astartes into the ranks of the PDF and Imperial Guard at both a physical and tactical level, with the majority of these human formations falling under the Astartesí direct command for the duration of the conflict. Although integrations of this nature are not uncommon in prolonged crusades or in isolated warzones bereft of support, it wasnít until the breaking of the siege and the formal re-ordering of the systemís defences that the enshrined tenet of Imperial law to prevent such power being placed in hands of the Astartes was irreparably broken, albeit a sanctioned break in protocol.

The strategic value of the Leonis Cluster is of near immeasurable value, acting as a staging ground and protector-system to both the Armageddon and Elysia systems, which lie in neighbouring sectors and subsectors respectively. Having suffered unimaginable losses at the hands of traitor forces and with the Imperiumís borders suffering under the increasing threats from traitors, heretics and xenos alike all resources available, be they munitions, armour, fleet or manpower are under greater demand than ever before. To compound this the outbreak of the Third War for Armageddon and the tide of darkness rippling in the wake of Abaddonís Thirteenth Black Crusade called for drastic measures if the Imperium was to maintain itís foot hold in the more heated galactic warzones. In light of the ever crumbling grasp of Terra on its boarders greater control over theatres of war, planetary and system defences and in more extreme circumstances over Imperial Guard and Navy formations was handed over, begrudgingly, to the direct command of a number of Astartes Commanders. Individuals who were in a far more advantageous position to protect the Imperiumís interests in a more direct manner both geographically and tactically.

Thus the breaking of the ancient and sacred tenets of what constitutes permissible power under the control of the Astartes came to pass with the sanction of the High Lords of Terra, despite widespread objections and concerns within the Ordo Hereticus. Under the authority of Terra and in the interests of the Imperium, Chapter Master Tiberius Vallarn of the Lions Argent assumed autonomous control over all military assets serving the Leonis Cluster, formalising the amalgamation of his Astartes into the ranks of the systems human cohorts. In comparison to the number of enlisted humans in these organisations the Astartes number only in the few, thus developing a need for more creative deployments throughout the newly formed Legion, these creative deployments effectively breaking a further sacred tenet of the Imperium. The tenet in question being the number of Astartes of which a Chapter consists, although acknowledged by most to be a reasonably fluid restriction that allows for slight flexibility in and around the hypothetical figure of one thousand warriors, the ranks of the Lions Argent had swelled to greatly exceed this figure. Whether the increasing number of Lions Argent Warriors was an intentional plan implemented by Vallarn in advance of the formalisation of the Leonis Legion or, as recorded, was a resulting factor, the truth may never be known. The fact remains that Lions Argent Chapter numbered in the thousands at the dawn of the 42nd Millennium, the means by which they resourced this increase remains a mystery. Inquisitor Malek-Loth of the Ordo Hereticus is documented as suggesting that Chapter Master Vallarn had been manipulating the recruitment rates of the Lions Argent for several hundred years, an undisputable act of heresy, none the less, the formal sanction given to the Leonis Legion and the disappearance of Inquisitor Malek-Loth have negated the investigation of such claims.

The Leonis Legion is a vast organisation; including all planetary bodies within the Leonis Cluster, their PDF forces, Imperial Guard and by association their Imperial Navy Assets as well as a number of outposts, listening stations and their military resources. A little fewer than 740,000 men at arms were inducted into the Leonis Legion, re-ordered and re assigned to serve the newly imposed command hierarchy and structure laid down by Chapter Master Tiberius Vallarn. Due to the vastness of the Leonis Legion the number of Astartes operating within its ranks is near unquantifiable, a point of contention with the Ordo Hereticus, although it has been observed that each company of Guardsmen operates under the command of an Astartes Centurion or field commander. This observation, however, implies a vast number of Astartes of which the figure would be highly unbelievable even given a hypothetical increase in recruitment over several centuries.

Vanguard Veteran Kleon Herodotus Perseus
Slayer of Gorgons
Bearer of the Crux Terminatus, 1st Veteran Company

A renown warrior amongst the veteran elite of the Lions Argent and hero of the chapter, Kleon Augustus joined the ranks of the Astartes in his adolescent years showing an aptitude for close combat as early as his recruitment training. Progressing through the ranks of the assault and battle companies and finally into the hallowed veteran company, Kleon received extensive training in the use of Tactical Dreadnought Armour, taking to combat in the behemoth suit as naturally as if it were his skin.

During an extermination campaign against Ork forces in the Medusa II Nebular Kleon Augustus was re-titled with the honourary name; Herodotus Perseus by the Chapterís Chief Librarian in honour of his instrumental actions in ending the conflict.
Throughout the three year war a trio of Ork Warbosses, known collectively as the Gorgons, formed an uneasy alliance in the face of the human invasion, united they represented a very real threat to Imperial Control in the subsector. In order to address this Chief Librarian Hephaistion Tychon lead three quarters of the first company against them in an effort to end their bloody rein. Kleon Augustus claimed the killing blow on all three of these hulking xenos forever earning himself immortality in the annals of the Chapterís history. From that day forth Kleon Augustus became Kleon Herodotus Perseus, one of the Chapterís Terminator elite.

Considered by most to be the last word in close-quarters warfare in any theatre of war in which he treads, Kleon Herodotus Perseus boasts a war-record comparable to that of the Chapterís Captains, with more kills that most two battle-brothers can hope to achieve. An honoured hero, Perseus is a guardian of a Terminator Suit, taking the behemoth armour into battle and being held solely responsible for itís safe return. To the Lions Argent Chapter, Tactical Dreadnought Armour is in limited supply, with only two dozen suits, never more than half see war at any one time.

Vanguard Veteran Sergeant Paalon Herodotus Akhilleus
Champion of Mymidus III
Crux Terminatus, 1st Veteran Company

An undisputed chapter hero with a talent for ending lives, Sergeant Akhilleus is rumoured to be near indestructible and has proven to be an implacable lord of war in armoured ceramite. Marked as warrior destined for greatness, Chapter Master Vallarn believes he will, one day, make a fine captain to the first veteran company, providing he can temper his tendency for acting on initiative outside of the chain of command. This latter trait is one that Akhilleus has become known for, inadvertently building himself a reputation for recklessness although this borderline foolhardiness has far paid off and proven advantageous for himself, his squad and his company on more occasions than not.

Like his battle-brothers who share the responsibility as a guardian of a terminator suit, Akhilleus was in fact born under a different name, adopting an honourary name bestowed upon him for deeds and actions in the Emperorís name. Born Paalon Peleus on the world of Leonis Primaris to a nomad band of scrap merchants and taken by the Emperorís Angels for recruitment following his infiltration of a chapter armoury buried deep below the planetís sand. Paalon Peleus was granted the name of Akhilleus by the Chatperís Chief Librarian following an unfortunate incident whilst undertaking operation on the space hulk ĎIntrepid Maledictioní. The incident in question saw Peleusí suit of terminator armour disabled by a stray plasma round shorting out the suitís machine spirit and disabling all motive functions. Despite the inability to move Peleus achieved over 30 confirmed kills, implacable in the face of his enemies. Following the operation and upon inspection by the chapterís techmarines the plasma round was found to have penetrated the suits left heel, a point of amusement amongst the chapter librarium who likened it to a truly ancient Terran legend. A latter victory on the back water world of Mymidus III saw Paalon Peleus near singlehandedly cripple the renegade command structure through a maelstrom of slaughter within the enemy stronghold. Thus in honour of his commendable performance and as a homage to the warriorís similarities to ancient heroes Peleus was presented the title Herodotus Akhilleus and made a permanent guardian a terminator armoured suit.

As a squad leader Paalon Herodotus Akhilleus is dependable and inspiring, leading by example rather than by order and commanding an aura of natural obedience upon those around him, it has been suggested that this could be an unconscious psychic talent but it is more likely that he is obeyed out of fear, despite the common belief that the Astartes Know No Fear.

Vanguard Veteran Idas Herodotus Theseus
Saviour of Asterion Gamma VI
Bearer of the Crux Terminatus, 1st Veteran Company

The youngest member of Vanguard Squad Akhilleus, brother Idas is infact one of the youngest members of the 1st Company and yet a warrior or indesputed skill and reputation none the less. Born in the underhives of Arcadius on the world of Agora, Idas' early life was less than honourable, although this all changed upon his induction into the Lions Argent Recruitment programme.

Idas proved his abilities, a clear equal of his brother-neophytes. Progressing to full initiate Brother Idas served with the 8th Assault Company with which he served for the majority of his, as yet, short military career. It was with the 8th Assault Company that Idas earnt his requisition to the 1st Veteran Company being promoted for his direct actions on the world of Asterion Gamma VI, an Imperial Prison planet deep within the Aegeus Nebular.

After the loss of the subterranean prison complex to a prisoner coup, a rapidly assembled task force was dispatched to retake the facility, unknown to the single guard regement dispatched the world of Asterion Gamma VI the planet was firmly in grasp of an upstart chaos cult.
After a prolonged conflict of attrition over several months a small force of 30 Marines from the Lions Argent chapter was sent to cleanse the facility. Amongst them 20 marines from the 8th Assault Company, 5 from the 9th Devastator Company and 5 from the 1st Veteran Company.

The ensuing conflict was a massacre, seeing only 3 casulties to the Astartes force, none of which were fatal. However the conflict was only so due to the actions of a young assault marine by the name of Brothe Idas. Through a series of ambushes Idas was seperated from his squad and forced to fight his way through the subterranean labyrinth alone, during which he killed over 350 of the chaos crazed prisoners before re-uniting with his squad, achieving a higher kill count than any other combined squad during the mission. Furthermore Idas then lead the Terminator clad 1st Company Veterans back through the labyrinthine complex to destroy the chaos infestation and ultimately complete the mission.

For these actions Brothe Idas was elevated to serve with the 1st Company, joining the very squad with which he served on Asterion Gamma VI. Fruthermore in the traditions of the chapter and the Chief Librarian granted the new veteran with the tital Herodotus Theseus after an ancient terran legend of a great hero who also mastered a labyrinth. This honour marking him as one of the Chapter's Terminator elite.

Vanguard Veteran Marius Herodotus Odyssean
Xeno-Bane | Bearer of the Crux Terminatus, 1st Veteran Company

Born of Terra to gifted mason in service to one of the fabricator guilds Mariusí early life was spent crossing much of the known galaxy, constantly at the side of his father. At the age of 16 Mariusí arrived on the world of Leonis, the fabricator guild having been contracted to undertake works in the capital of Linnaeus. Ambushed by bandits and outlaws in the city outskirts only a handful of the guild visitors survived, amongst them the young boy Marius. His father dead Marius spent several months scratching a living out of the dirt in the capital until he was eventually picked up, quite literally by the Adeptus Astartes and enrolled in the their recruitment programme.

Following a largely unremarkable career by Astartes standards, with one exception, Marius has served the chapter for a little over 500 years, the latter 70 being spent with the First Company in recognition of his singular achievement considered worthy of veneration; the accolade in question took place aboard the listening station Macharius Omega Nine in far galactic south. Under the command of 1st Company Sergeant by the name of Lysander 25 battle brothers and a few companies of Elysian Drop Troopers set out for the station; the mission was simple, establish why communications had been lost and secure the facility until a larger garrison force arrived, estimated to be 63 days behind them.

The outpost was a charnel house, the stations former inhabitants had been massacred and the complex appeared deserted. Despite a thorough sweep and 6 days of investigation no life forms were found. At dusk on the 7th day the xenos made their presence known, attacking the intruders with ferocity that far outmatched the Imperial Guard and the small Astartes contingent. Having fought against the Tyranids for over a century Marius was experienced at fighting their kind and after 4 weeks of continued losses Marius led a counter offensive. Donning the armour of the wounded 1st Company Sergeant, Marius led a small force to find and kill the synapse creatures leading the lesser xenos. The search proved fruitful seeing Marius take on a mighty Hive Tyrant in single combat, a combat that Marius ultimately lost and was left unconscious, but not without severely wounding the creature and taking one of beasts eves with his Lightning Claws. The tyranid attacks ceased and the creatures withdrew to the stations depths. The hive tyrant was later found in the bowls of the station having died of its wounds. For these actions Marius was elevated to the first company, inducted into the Terminator Elite.

As has become tradition for the Librarium this newly inducted member of the Terminator Elite was re-titled with an honorific name, this time after an ancient terran legend in which a mighty hero wounded a one eyed monster, thus it came to pass that Marius was re-named Marius Herodotus Odyssean, Bearer of the Crux Terminatus.

Vanguard Veteran Vorenus Herodotus Heracleus
Patron of Linnaeus | Bearer of the Crux Terminatus, 1st Veteran Company

Amongst the Chapterís Terminator Elite Vorenus Heracleus is somewhat of a unique warrior, one lauded by the people of the Linnaeus as a hero amongst men, a demi-god servant of the God-Emperor who carries his blessing. The exact reasons behind which Vorenus Heracles has become an unofficial patron of Linnaeus are a subject of much debate amongst the chapter. Vorenus Heracleus has unintentionally found himself as the subject of much public attention being part of the spearhead that broken the siege of Agora and having orchestrated the liberation of the great many captives from pirates and raiders during the Elysia Campaign. Ever the politician the Chapter Master has not discouraged Vorenusí public attention, near encouraging it as a means to good publicity and creating a very rare bond between the Astartes and the humanís whom which they protect.

It was for his actions in the breaking of the Siege of Agora and the liberation of the surviving combatants in the hive of Arcadius that Vorenus Heracleus was elevated to the first company and inducted into the Terminator Elite. Part of the first wave of drop pod landings, Vorenus and much of the 6th Tactical Reserve company found themselves in the heart the enemies war machines, surrounded by titans, battle tanks and traitors at their staging ground, most were unscrewed or awaiting armament. Despite this less that 55% of the 6th Tactical Reserve Company survived the battles, which is still considered to this day to have been a favourable outcome given the magnitude of the conflict.

During the battle Sergeant Vorenus Heracleus and his squad successfully disabled 12 enemy titans through various means, taking advantage of their dormant state ensuring they never saw battle in the name of the foul gods again. Having placed the melta-charges on the legs of a mighty Reaver Titan and bringing the giant crashing down on to another at itís back Vorenus Heracleus secured himself a position in the first company and record of his names in the Chapterís role of honour.

From a traditional point of view Vorenus Herodotus Heracleus is somewhat individual, not having been gifted his latter heroic name, instead having his birth name segregated with the title Herodotus, thus making him on the only member of the Terminator Elite to bear his own name as venerated honour; making him a true hero by name and action.

Vanguard Veteran Squad Terminatus Akhilleus

Clad in Tactical Dreadnought Armour Vanguard Veteran Squad Akhilleus are heroes of the Lions Argent, all bearing the Crux Terminatus and opperating as the Chapter's Armoured Elite, as much a burden as an honour. For to be one entrusted with the custodianship of a Terminator suit is to be given the responsibility to adorn yourself in a Chapter War relic, enter the most ferocious warzones and pledge to protect the very armour you wear.

The Lions argent possess only two dozen suits of Tactical Dreadnought Armour and only half are pemitted to serve in battle at any one time. Requiring both the sanction of the Chief Librarian and the Chapter Master to walk to war the Chapter's stock of Terminator Armour is a prized war relic venerated above all others. It is said that the Crux Terminatus badge of honour displayed on all suits of the Terminator Armour were forged around a single fragment of the Emperor's armour following the heresy, a sign of recognition to the Imperial Fist Terminators that aided the lord of mankind in the fight against the Traitor Warmaster Horus Lupercal, it is perhaps because of this connection that the Lions Argent prise them so, a literal link to the Master of Mankind.

Are you going to make Power Armour versions of the Terminators? They're such wonderful characters, it would be great to see if you could "translate" them into PA... And with that in mind, to a degree, as they are the only 12 suits of TDA in the Chapter... aren't they a little plain? I would expect them to be decorated a little more, not necessarily bling, but scripture, suit-specific heraldry, lists of the dead, etc.

@ 'razormasticator' - Thanks for the kind words fella.

@ 'DapperAnarchist' - I am pleased you liked the narrative, I am very pleased with the Terminator charaters, i do not currently have any plans for them to be reimagined in power armour, although this is a very nice idea, one i may well call upon in the future. With regard to the ornateness of the Terminator suits i used the Space Hulk terminators for the main torsos and legs, which i consider to be suitably ornate and detailed, i think that painted extras can often serve to clutter the appearance of a model, it is for this same reason that i now refrain from painting purity seals in most cases.

Command Squad Veterans_Hoplite Cohort
2nd Company Command Squad

Under the command of Captain Dardanus Anarian the 2nd Company's command squad follows the tenents and teachings of the Hoplite Cohort of which he is the Master. Although it is said that none to heft a storm shield in battle are as skilled with it's usage as Captain Anarian those veterans chosen to fullfill the role of sergeants within in the Hoplite Cohort are amongst some of the finest warriors that the Lions Argent Chapter can commit to the theatre of war. With only 8 squads of the Chapter's First Company counted within the Cohort only 8 Veterans serve as sergeants, a further 3 veterans serve the chapter however; fighting at the side of Captain Anarian himself as part of the 2nd Company Command Squad.

The Veterans of the 2nd Company Command Squad are expert combatants with a near unparalleled reputation within the Lions Argent Chapter. Adorned in power armour and weilding a deadly combination of Power Sword, Bolt Pistol and Storm Shield they are adpet in ship to ship boarding actions, tunnel fighting and urban warfare. Marked as veterans serving a command squad by the skull symbol on their right shoulder pauldron the Veterans of the 2nd Battle Company display the chapter symbol on their left shoulder pauldron; a stark contrast to much of the chapter who are adorned in the studded shoulder pads of MkV or MkVI battle plate. Other privilages extended to the veterans of the chapter are the more artificered armoured plate, in this case carefully guilded MkII shoulder pauldrons and the lavishly ornate storm shields displaying the holy Aquila of the God-Emperor.

Apothecarion Adept Nostraados Quintus
Apothecary to the 2nd Battle Company, Lions Argent Adeptus Astartes

A skilled bio-chemist and chirurgeon Nostraados Quintus is the 9th Adpet of the Lions Argent Apothecarion and serves on permenant attachment to the 2nd Battle Company. Quintus trained with the Magos Biologis of the Voss Forge World on a decade long sabbatical, as is tradition for the Apothecarion Adpets of the Lions Argent Chapter. During this secondment the apothecary learned the intricacies of bio-manipulation and chem-enhancement mastering the scientific arts of gene-technology.

Although no more talented or oustanding than his battle-brothers of the Chapter Apothecarion, to be an Astartes Apothecary is to be one of a rare breed of chirurgeons blessed with artificially long life and super-human anotomy far in advance of the natural-normality of the parent species. The Chapter's apothecaries collectively work to build new Astartes Warriors from the bodies of young neophytes, working closely with the chaplaincy and the 10th company their training.
Furthermore to be an Apothecary of the Adeptus Astartes is a privelage few will ever experience, working on those whose creation was master-minded by the God-Emperor, tending to their needs in the theatre of war, ensuring their physical health and administering the Emperor's peace when no more can be done.

Before his attachment to the 2nd Battle Company Nostraados Quintus served with the 10th Company overseeing the induction of recruits and leading their physical enhancement to become Astartes. To have served as Apothecary to the 10th Company is considered a great honour and only those who have truely mastered the scientific arts of gene-enhancement will ever get the opportunity.

2nd Company Command Squad
Chosen of Linneaus, Headquarters of the Hoplite Cohort

Veterans of extreme skill and exemplar knight-warriors of near unparalled prowess, the 2nd Company Command squad are the epitome of Lions Argent Adeptus Astartes. The warriors of the 2nd Company Command Squad are adept in the arts of close quarters warfare and versed in the tactical doctrines necessary to conduct a crusade or campaign, each a demi-god of battle rich in experience.

Lead by the noble warrior captain Dardanus Anarian the 2nd Battle Company Command squad are also the super-elite of the Hoplite Cohort, a fighting formation unique to the Lions Argent, utilisting combat, boarding assault and storm shields to make up for the lack of Tactical Dreadnougth Armour possessed by the Chapter. A requirement given the Chapter's prediliction towards ship to ship warfare and the frequency of their deployments to urban warzones.

Dardanus Anarian and his command squad are always found in the thick of the fighting, leading their brethren into the crucible of battle from the front, leading by example and setting the bar high with a bloody trail of the enemy's dead.

Chapter Champion Aeneas Hakon
Master Praetorian of the Order | Champion of the Lions Argent Chapter

Taciturn and solemn Aeneas Hakon has served in the Chapter Honour Guard for two and a half centuries, appointed to the venerated position shortly before Tiberius Vallarn became Chapter Master. A close combat specialist of near incomparable skill and possessive of an unwavering loyalty to the Chapter Master that boarders on the fanatical, Hakon has never forgiven himself for the death of the Chapterís former commander.

It is a common perception that the Honour Guard of a chapter are so steeped in the trade of warfare that their accumulated knowledge and understanding of the intricacies of battle outstrip even the experience of the Chapterís Captains, this has never been more true than in the case of Aeneas Hakon. As Master Praetorian of the Chapterís Honour Guard Hakonís words are regarded as near Chapter Law, although rarely giving unsolicited advice and he offers his council only in the direst of circumstances or at the request of his liege lord, when giving council his words carry a gravitas that can only be matched by the Chapter Master himself.

The war record of Aeneas Hakon is long indeed and reads like the myths and legends of ancient Terra. Despite being an undisputed hero of the Adeptus Astartes Aeneas Hakon is plagued by the events that unfolded during the final days of the siege of Magraad VI. Confronting the forces of the renegade Apostle Abrath the Chapter Masterís forces were beset by a host of summoned daemons and warp spawned beats, overrun, the unit was forced to fight for their very survival in the maelstrom of the conflict Hakon slew Abrath in single combat but at the expense of the Chapter Masterís life, who fell at the hands of the demonic onslaught. The destruction of the renegade Apostle saw the daemonic hordes banished back into the warp and was the turning point in the siege, although Hakon has refused to take praise of the victory, seeing only his failure in the death of the Chapter Master. It is because of the events on Magraad VI that Aeneas Hakon personally chooses and trains all members of the Chapter Honour Guard, so high are his standards that he has been known to refuse induction of even the most skilled combatants and steadfast warriors. But above all Hakonís fanaticism for the protection of the Chapter Master has lead to the Lions Argent Honour Guard, known simply as Ďthe orderí, being renown for martial excellence and regarded as some of the most fanatically loyal warriors in all the Imperium.

Aeneas Hakon wields a Thunder Hammer of his own design, the weapons started life as a relic blade one of a number of near identical weapons utilised by the Chapter's honour guard. The mighty hammer's head was forged from the remains of smelted remains of the Dark Apostle Abrath, Aeneas has been known to comment that he enjoys the irony of literally wielding the dark apostle as a weapon of the Emperor, but in truth Aeneas has never forgiven himself for the death of the last Chapter Master and the hammer serves as an ever-present reminder of his self-inflicted failings. Developed for Aeneas by the Senior Techmarine and Forge-Tetrarch Daedalus the servo arm mounted bolt pistol is some what of a unique weapon A simple concept but complicated device, the pistol is configured to operate on a mind-link interface, allowing Aeneas to aim, target and fire it with but a thought keeping his hands uncumbered and free to wield his mighty hammer.

Honoured Brother Artemus Baalthros
Praetorian of the Order | Honour Guard to the Lord of Leonis | Lions Argent Chapter Honour Guard

The newest member of the Chapter Honour Guard Artemus Baalthros was inducted into the venerated position from the Chapter's First Company, formally a Vanguard Veteran Sergeant of reknown his war record and accumulated acolades are great indeed. Artemus Baalthros was likened to infamous Carab Culln of the Red Scorpions whose career reads with remarkable similarities. Baalthros is an achomplished swordsman and has worked very closely with Captain Dardanus Anarian in overseeing the elite training of the Hoplite Cohort, specifically the Vanguard elements of the fighting formation.

Following a particularly ferocious engagment on the ourskirts of the Agrotera Province on Potina-Theron II the newly recruited Praetorian aided the fourth company Captain, Dardanus Anarian, in defeating a host of Hrud warriors theatening to over-run the Astartes defences. The engagement left the Fourth Company Captain's helm, and thus his means of communication irreparabley damaged, to ensure that command over the fighting force was not comprimised Baalthros handed the Captain his helm fighting on without it. To this day Dardanus Anarian still bear's the helmet and by way of gratitude had his own helm reforged to fashioned for the Praetorian. It is for this reason alone that Baalthros' helm differs from that of the other Honour Guard in appearence.

No for something a little different...

... i am not normally in the habit of posting Work In Progress photos, however i will be progressing one of my curret projects in small stages so it would seem prudent to share these with you and try and show you how this project is evolving and progressing, especially as this is arguably the centrepoint of my Imperial force, inclsuive of all elements.

WIP Chapter Master

OK this is the Terminator helmet from Commander Carab Culln with the addition of a Laurel crown;

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=133120&d=1329821965

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=133121&d=1329821967

And this is the right arm of the progressing chapter master, the shoulder pad down to the elbow is that of Lugft Huron and the gautlet and sword is that of Inquisitor Hector Rex, albeit with some symbols and iconogrpahy removed. i have added the small skull to the sword hilt, taken carefully from the side of a forge world plasma cannon.

http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=133123&d=1329821970

I think it worthy of note that this sword, which i will be using as a relic blade (more or less) is an absolute monster of weapon, i really am staggered at it's sheer size.

Fantastic work, you can't tell that the sword arm is made up of so many different parts by looking at it, very good good. The blad does indeed look like a monster, it looks like it would be as long if not longer than his arm if he stretched it out. Which body are you planning to use?

@ ChrisMurray: In answer to your question, i think the below update will shed some light on the matter...

WIP Chapter Master

Ok, i have started work on the body and overall pose of my Chapter Master, decided that Lugft Huron's body is the best for the job and has suitably matching details that link in nicely with my Terminators (prevously posted) not to mention that it is a beautiful sculpt, i really think this is one of Simno Egan's best pieces. I was unsure on the rock, seeing it initially as a cheat to give the character presence, although having now handled the model and placed him on the rock it works far better that the forge world pictures lead me to believe.

I decided that to give him a little more of a wow factor i would procure a cloak, the best for the job appearing to be that adorning Inquisitor Lord Hector Rex, another product of Simon Egan's skill. With some very hot water, a little trimming and some greenstuff to finish i was able to get a rather satisfying fit. In reality much the greenstuff work will be out of sight on the finished model, hidden behind the massive shoulder pauldrons, but i felt important to compelte the cloak and ensure a solid fit.

Not wanting the heavy flamer for my Chapter Master i carefully seperated the components below the elbow and set the weapon aside for re-use at a later date ( i have rather exciting plans for it actually...) I then took the wrist from Khorne Lord Zuphor and trimmed the back edge of the gauntlet and elongated it with a little green stuff to match that of the sword arm (posted above). Some brass pin and super glue resulted in a convincing start to an arm resebling that of the power sword wielding one. Still some work to be done here as a i an leanign towards including a wrist mounted stormbolter to keep his hand's free for the sword, but i am still trying out some ideas on that....

So enough rambling; here's some pictures:

WIP Chapter Master

A small update in terms of progress, but a milestone with regards to the model; some careful scalpel work seperated the combi-bolter from Zuphor's power fist and some greenstuff work has turned this into a lovely gautlet mounted stormbolt for my Chapte Master, the latter work is clearly visible as i have coated the previous greenstuff work in a grey primer to help identify blemishes for sanding out, etc...

Honoured Brother Laarn Nikandus
Praetorian of the Order | Honour Guard to the Lord of Leonis | Lions Argent Chapter Honour Guard

Having served with the Chapter Honour Guard for a little under one century Brother Laarn Nikandus is a proven tactical commander, formally holding captaincy over the 7th Tactical Reserve Company before giving up this duty to serve alongside the Chapter Master directly. Although not unheard of, it is somewhat of a rare occurance when a ranking officer resigns their commission for other duties, except in the case of extensive injury, it is believed however that the close ties between Aeneas Hakon and Nikandus is the primary reason. Both warriors share a common outlook, rarely disagreeing on the finer points of warfare, this aside Hakon is a warrior adn dualist to the core where as Nikandus is a tactical mastermind of considerable note.

Nikandus has lead various Chapter forces in a number of actions and served as 7th Tactical Reserve Company with distinction. Notably Nikandus wisdom and tacitcal prowess lead to the almost perfect defeat of the Nau'taag Pirate syndicate durign the Purging of Elysia Campaign. It should be noted that the actions Nikandus commanded against the Nau'taag Pirates saw only 11 casulties amongst the Astartes force, although both were fatal, with a kill count of 392 and 233 pirtates taken as prisoners of war.

As a member of the Honour Guard, Laarn Nikandus is a skilled warrior counted amongst the Chapter's finest, although it is as aid to the Chapter Master that his natural tactical abilities are put to the best use, enjoying a position of consult-tactician to the Chapter's force commanders and Captains.

In addition to these war relics the Chapter Honour Guard carry bolt pistols and power swords ensuring their martial dominance in close quarters combat. It is common place amongst Codex adherent Chapters for the Honour Guard to wield boltguns, albeit master crafted examples, a practical philosphy not shared by the Knightly brethren of the Lions Argent Chapter.

Honoured Brother Boreas Telemachus
Praetorian of the Order | Honour Guard to the Lord of Leonis | Lions Argent Chapter Honour Guard

Formally an accomplished Veteran Sergeant of the 3rd Battle Company, Boreas Telemachus is an individual of peculiar aspect sporting a great many scars. So many infact that his patrician face is near indistinguishable, reduced to a contorted mangle of flesh and trans-human healed tissue, a direct result of a prolonged tour of service attached to the deathwatch in the Ultima Segmentum. A survior of a unnamed world over-run by the Tyranid hordes of an unidentified hive fleet Telemachus considers his scars penance for his failings in the campaign, failings that not even one of the ancient Primarchs could have bettered. However his despoiled face is the least of his injuries the most notable being the violent removal of much of his chest and throat the resultant effect of which is that Telemachus cannot speak with natural means, instead communicating in an artifical electronic voice resembling that of one of Chapter Ancients entombed in Dreadnought Armour. It is often jested by Aeneas Hakon that Telemachus is being mechanically altered to be a dreadnought one organ at a time. The darker side of this injury however has lead to Telemachus rarely speaking, detesting his own voice.

As a warrior of the Lions Argent Telemachus is counted amongst the upper tiers of combatants in the chapter, as skilled with a blade as Captain Dardanus Anarian and as proficient a shot with a bolt pistol as Centurion Nereum Vaalthus of the Leonis Legion. Thus it has come to pass that his unflinching resolve and abilities as a close quarters dualist have made him a favoured Praetorian of Aeneas Hakon and the Chapter Master himself.

Chapter Master Tiberius Vallarn
Envoy of Terra | Praetor of the Leonis Cluster | Vicarius Consul of Elysia
ĎAuditorii Imperatorí
Grand Master of the Lions Argent Chapter

A warrior of demi-god like skill and a commander beyond comparison, Tiberius Vallarn is a true hero of the Imperium, recognised amongst the greatest legends of mankind he is the bearer of a great many titles, some honorific and some conveying vast amounts of power and responsibility.

Having served the Lions Argent Chapter for almost six centuries prior to being promoted to the rank of Chapter Master Vallarn proved his worth as a servant of the Emperor, leading the Lions Argentís First Company from one successful campaign to the next and earning every honour the Chapter can bestow upon him. As Chapter Master, a title he has held for a little over two centuries, Vallarnís most notable achievement was the purging of the Elysia System, securing the systemís shipping lanes and destroying almost all of the pirate and xenos forces taking refuge in the surrounding asteroid filled wilderness space. Prior to Vallarn and the Lions Argentís intervention in the Elysia System, the Imperial Guard lead campaign had lasted for six years, double the anticipated time, with the joining of the Lions Argent the campaign was reconciled in less that seventeen months with minimal casualties. For Vallarnís successful leadership of the campaign, which restored one of the four major shipping routes to Terra, he was granted an audience with the Emperor himself, a privilege a scarce few have been afforded. Seen as a saviour by the trading guilds and governors of Elysia, Vallarn was granted the title Vicarius Consul of Elysia.

As Chapter Master Vallarn is an inspiration to his troops and commander of the highest order, as much a politician as a warrior, a trait that is exploited in his position on the council of the Leonis Cluster. Such involvement in system affairs by Astartes is frowned upon by the Administratum and the Ordo Hereticus, noe Astartes having had such involvement since the glory days of Macragge before the Horus Heresy. However with the hostilities growing on a galactic scale transgressions are permitted where mutual interests are seen to benefit. Because of these leniencies Vallarn has acquired by various portents and awards no small amount of political power, holding important titles and having rights of Veto over the System Council of the Leonis Cluster. It is worth noting the only other Astartes to hold such positions in recent history are Marneus Calgar and Lugft Huron, the latter of which has been excommunicated and branded a traitor.

In true reflection of the Chapterís stereotypical visage Vallarn keeps a council of advisors from which he encourages freedom of speech in private council, their purpose being to ensure that important decision are properly informed and that conflicting opinions are voiced for consideration. The council is made up of two Battle Company Captains and the First Company Captain; these Captains hold the title of Paladin and attend directly to the Chapter Master in almost all circumstances.

Partly due to the attention given by various Thorian factions and partly due to the Chapterís close ties with the Ecclesiarchy and the Adeptus Sororitas, Tiberius Vallarn is widely venerated as a saint by followers of the Imperial Creed, a veneration Vallarn does not agree with, but does little to dispel. Many supporters who consider themselves Thorians believe Tiberius Vallarn to be an incarnation of the Emperor himself, returned to usher in a new period of light and prosperity for mankind. Vallarn himself, having knelt before the golden throne, is a secretive believer in the Star-Child theory, supporting itís hypothesis that the Emperor needs releasing form his mortal coil to rise to his full potential and power. The majority of individuals that have openly supported this theory have been excommunicated and cleansed from Administratum records, to speak of the Emperorís death in such a traitorous manner is deemed to be great heresy punishable by death.

With the recently halted 13th Black Crusade and closing of the 3rd War for Armageddon further leniencies from Terra have lead to great benefit for the Lions Argent Chapter and the fortuitously placed Tiberius Vallarn, expanding his control over the Leonis Cluster in more formalised manner the Chapter Master has been granted permission to take control of all Military forces within the system and subsector, although not the only Astartes commander to be given such power, few hold sway over as strategically important pocket empires such as the Leonis Cluster. As part of this responsibility Vallarn has re-ordered the fighting forces at his disposal creating the Leonis Legion, a human auxiliary force of consolidated guard regiments, imperials navy assets, militia and planetary defence forces. All of these various military powers have been amalgamated into a singular force, ensuing cohesion and focus of purpose, all of which in undertaken under the watchful eye of a great many Astartes Centurion Commanders, all reporting to Chapter Master Tiberius Vallarn.

Tiberius Vallarn is a living legend, his achievements and accolades known throughout the Imperium of man. With a string of successful campaigns and decisive interventions that have had ramifications on a galactic scale Tiberius Vallarn has carved himself a place alongside some of the Imperiumís mightiest heroes; Marneus Calgar, Logan Grimmnar, Lord Inquisitor Hector Rex and even Lord Solar Marcharuis by the reckoning of some. Although in the shadows of the Terran political guilds adepts speak in hushed voices of the similarities between Tiberius Vallarn's military career at that of the recently defeated heretic Lugft Huron, now branded Huron Blackheart. The reality is that Vallarn is the embodyment of everything Huron could have been, a strong commander with confidence and certainty as his allies, not one plagued by doubt or paranoia. Despite the ramblings and rumour mongering of politcal adjutants it is an undesputed fact that Tiberius Vallarn is a master commander and true Hero of the Imperium, the likes of which will be sorely needed to whether the comming tide.

Ungula Leo: Believed to date back to the glorious days of the Great Crusade Ungula Leo is a mighty blade whose origins are shrouded in the veil of time, despite a plethora of legends and theories. Named in an ancient Calibanite tongue ĎUngula Leoí translates loosely into High Gothic as ĎClaw of the Lioní or ĎLion Clawí. The investigations of the Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor Malek-Loth extrapolated that this could in fact be a miss translation and concluded that the true meaning is in fact ĎLion Swordí. However this is quite a leap of interpretation and as to whether or not the sword truly is the former sword of the Primarch Lion ElíJohnson the truth may never be known. Regardless of the Swordís origins and former masters the fact remains that Ungula Leo is weapon of supreme craftsmanship, clearly the work of a gifted artificer.

Nice use of Hector Rex's cape there, really suits the model. I always thought that, while being a pretty awesome model, the Huron model could have done with a cloak. Every space marine hero should have a cloak... its like the law, or something.

+++ Extract from the archives of Inquisitor Lord Iccarus Laan, Ordo Hereticus +++
+++ Extract B7533-DLE7-G1 - recorded by savant 5K-U11, servo skull +++
+++ Subject: Extract from conversation between Inquisitor Lord Iccarus Laan and Chapter Master Tiberius Vallarn +++

ďÖwith respect inquisitor your allegations are unfounded, you are drawing conclusions from the actions of others and levying the subsequent judgements disproportionately. Lugft Huron was a paranoid madman, a tyrant hungry for power and intent on forging an empire for his own glory. I do not doubt that he set out upon his path with the noblest intentions but the end does not justify the means, he kept ill-favoured company and suffered as a result of poor judgement and questionable allegiances. It is without question that he was found wanting in the eyes of the Inquisition and God-Emperor, thus sentence was passed. If you are intent on using the follies and failings of others to condemn me and my Chapter then so be it, your actions will do nothing more than bring embarrassment upon you and your office. The Lions Argent are a proud and loyal chapter, one which fights for the God-Emperor alone and will smite his foes for the betterment of the Imperium, only he upon the Golden Throne can pass judgement upon us, for all we do is in his name. Let us not forget that is by direct order from the Council of Terra that the Leonis Legion was formed and put under my command, the expansion of my Chapter to facilitate this integration of arms is unavoidable and falls well within my martial remit. I will listen to your drivelling no longer, I suggest you make arrangements with the house-master to shorten your stay in Linnaeus, it would be unfortunate if you were to outstay your welcome.Ē

Glorium Leonis
Land Raider Prometheus | Command and Control Tank | Transport to Captain Dardanus Anarian, 2nd Battle Company

Attached to the 2nd Battle Company the Land Raider Prometheus Glorium Leonis is an ancient vehicle believed to have been constructed in the early years of M37. The vehicle has been retrofitted with an advanced radar and communications array enhancing the Prometheus' already highly capable systems. Favoured by commanders for it's command control facilities the Prometheus design is a more common sight amongst those chapter's that take pride in tactical prowess, the Lions Argent Chapter being but one example. Although often put into services were it's system capabilities are best utilised the Prometheus is still a fearsome warmachine; frontal assault ramp and two sponson each housing a pair of twin linked heavy bolters make for a brutal anti-infantry tank. Often underestimated by many for it's apparent lack of firepower, the truth of the matter is that the Prometheus is as deadly as many of it's Land Raider kindred in hands of the right commander.

What else can we say, a very well executed army that carries the theme throughout. Each Marine in individualized and you have made a story to go with each squad and hero.

Scyllus Rubious
1st Sergeant to 2nd Battle Company, Centurion Primus

Stubborn and relentless in his prosecution of war Scyllus Rubious is bear of a warrior unyielding in the pursuit of his objective and the destruction of his foes. Widely considered to be the epitome of a tactical marine Rubious has proven himself a valuable asset of the Chapter and an expert in aggressive warfare.

As first sergeant of the 2nd Battle Company Rubious has the honour of bearing the Company Standard in ceremonial duties and overseeing its care and maintenance between functions. It should be noted that the Lions Argent do not carry their standards into battle considering them to be of too greater a value to bear into the theatre of war. Thus it is that Rubious has earned for himself the honorifica Iron Halo, Crux Terminatus and the Imperial Laurels amongst a great many other commendations and honours. As is tradition for the post of 1st Sergeant, Rubious undertakes a number of logistical duties in support of the Company Captain and the operational duties of the Company as a fighting force. In addition to these duties Rubious operates as an independent force commander for minor operations in separate orchestrations to that of the Company Captain and Company Chaplain. Rubious was seconded to serve with the 2nd Battle Company at the request of Captain Dardanus Anarian, formally serving the Chapter Honour Guard and before that as a Vanguard Assault Marine with the 1st Veteran Company.

One of the most notable benefits of being elevated to the rank of Centurion Primus is that by tradition, Rubious is granted access to wargear from the Captain’s armourium. It is not uncommon for Centurion Primus’ to be clad in artificered battle plate and wield masterly crafted weapons usually only available to those of higher authority. Rubious Himself boasts an ornately decorated artificered suit of battle plate and an Iron Halo, affording him a level of protection usually only privileged to the Chapter Masters and Captains.
