View Full Version : Pre-Heresy, Pre-Mortarion Dusk Raiders

So, new proper project log time and with the juicy new mk2 Forgeworld marines out in tactical and assault variant, i thought id give something new a try.

Since heresy era armies are becoming more and more popular, after discussion with some of the folks on The Great Crusade forums, i thought i'd go back in time a little further to the pre-primarch space marine regiments, when the legions were formed of Terran marines.

It was also a time when the Emperor had only just begun his great crusade, and the regiments went by their original names. So, i present to you the Terran regiment of Dusk Raiders, prior to finding the primarch Mortarion and becoming the Death Guard.

Though its a painting project at heart, I'm gonna try and bear rules in mind, using the Tempus Fugatives 30k expansion as a basis for inspiration, but making it 40k legal if i ever finally make it to the 40k throne of Skulls tourney.

Initial plan is to get a decent chunk finished, so i can enter the armies on parade competition.

Anyway, enough talk, everyone goes straight for the pictures anyway...

Interesting concept. this is possible the first time I've ever seen an army like this, keep up the good work! (oh, and I'm not so good with my pre-primarch fluff, so I have to ask....are these guys basically the Thunder Giants/techno-barbarians?)

The painted one is really nice. It's a great idea.

What is the powerfist from on the painted model?

There guys are the first terran marines, so the first ones to use the geneseed oftheir lost primachs, rather than the proto astates big E used to conquer the sol system. So proper marines rather than drug junkie techno barbarians.

The powerfist is from the sternguard sgt with a gk termie tilt shield

Awesome! The painted one is a real beauty!

Awesome poses. I like the concept for the army too. I just caved in and bought some FW stuff too :) THe painting looks good on the first guy, but your pictures are a bit washed out. Not sure why. Good use of the GK heads. I have a couple on my tray for my Deathwing too.

And to make it more interesting, forgeworld have just added this to their website...

There goes my next payday then

Awesome! My mate just converted a dreadknight into an AdMech ironclad. But I think this would have been perfect.

Evening all,

well, after not getting round to do any painting last night, only undercoating the first 5 tactical marines, I sat down and looked at the Sternguard Sgt I started painting and to be honest was fairly disappointed when I looked at him. I think the picture makes him look slightly better than he is, and really im not happy with the tone of blue/grey to white that I used. I think it worked on some Ultramarines I'd painted in the past, but for Dusk Raiders, it just doesn't suit.

Now I would just throw him in my tub of fairy power spray to clean him off and start again, however, his arm and legs are failcast resin, and i've heard its not a strip-able materiel without going all rubbery. So bit of a dilemma there, shall have a think about that.

This evening, bar watching the boxing later *Haye to win via stoppage in the 8th round*, I'm gonna find some old models and try some different white combo's to see if I can find something I prefer more. Possibly Graveyard/Khaki/White rather than Fortress/White. We shall see.

Until later then

Love pre heresy stuff. make sure to take better photos when you paint them. Not a fan of the sauna look of the first batch of photos lol!

What bits make up that captain/sgt?

He looks fantastic

Interesting idea and a great paint job so far. Looking forward to seeing more.

The colour scheme you have chosen seems very similar to the Death Guard, did they have the same colour scheme before their Dad turned up?

from the bottom up

sternguard mk6 marine legs
fw mk3 backpack and torso, trimmed down slightly on the belt.
sternguard sgt powerfist
plastic marine right arm
fw Umbra bolter
Grey Knight Terminator head and tilt plate/shield
Red Scorpion Vet Sgt Haas Shoulder Pad

last night, I managed to try a few other colour practices, and still not happy with a white, also tried a potential dark blue for night lords and salamander green, and my painting-fu seems to have left me. Will have another play about this evening after work, so see if I can get it back after a day of reading in work.

we shall see *and hope*

@ Hairy

Indeed, back in the old Space Marine Game, they were something like

(Its abit pink colour wise, should be more a crimson colour and both shoulder should be red, though I kinda like the one pad idea[/I])

Also found the same persons interpretation of the Legions symbol

Ahh, I like it. A nice simple colour scheme though painting the skull over and over again may be a pain.

You might be able to use some space wolf decals as that skull is pretty similar to the long fang symbol.

Great stuff I always wanted to see these guys brought to life, Get Garro in there!!!!! :D

Unfortunately guys, this is now a dead project.

The raiders have been redeployed to another commander and my interest in the war (hobby) has gone.

Have been selling off my armies recently, because I just dont have the enthusiasm for wargaming any more. So if anyone wants a half company of iron hands + a ton of extras, give us a shout ;)
