View Full Version : The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 10 (& JUL WIP)

03-07-2011, 21:43
Welcome to the Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011! Apologies for the delay this month - I've been away for the weekend and totally forgot!

What is the Tale all about?
The aim of the Tale of Painters is to get an army fully painted within the next 12 months.

For most 40k armies the size will be somewhere between 1000 and 2000 points, but you can go higher if you want to (and you're crazy enough)! BFG and Epic armies will be slightly different, but as long as you choose an appropriate sized army for your game system then there's no problem.

Once you've chosen your army, your target is to paint roughly 10% of your army each month. For example, if you've chosen a 2000 point army then your monthly target would be 200 points. The Tale runs for one year (September 2010 to August 2011), so if you stick to your 10% monthly target then you'll only need to paint for 10 months of the year.

To cover the months when you can't/don't paint, you get 2 'Jokers'. You can play a 'Joker' at any time (provided you haven't used them both up!), which essentially means that you don't have to meet your target for that month. They can used for real life events (such as births, deaths, marriages, exams, holidays) or if you're just having a bad/slow month. If you use a 'Joker' then feel free to post a suitable image instead (a Joker or something funny).

What is this thread all about?
This thread is to be used as the completed work thread for June, up until the 10th. Please only post last month's completed work until the 10th.

On the 11th it will then become the work in progress (wip) thread for July. Feel free to post any wip pictures of what you're going to be painting this month, army lists, background stories, battle reports, questions, and comments on anyone else's posts. You can post as little or as much as you like in the wip thread, but please keep it wip. Do not post any completed work for July until the next thread opens at the start of August. The next thread will start out as to place the post your completed entries for this month, and after the deadline (now set as the 10th of each month) will become the next wip thread.

If you have not posted by the 10th, then you will have to use one of your 'Jokers'. If you have failed to post by the 10th and have already used up both of your 'Jokers', then unfortunately you will be out of the Tale.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : Unfortunately you are now too late! Don't worry though, the Tale of Painters will be starting again later in the year (August/September).

Q : Can I paint more than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, and it's great to get ahead. BUT, we would like you only to post 10% (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 10% per month. For example, if you're painting 2000 points that means 200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc. This way you won't depress those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, but we would like you to try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example, if you're painting 2000 points and you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character/tank/unit?
A : This happens a lot. If your character/tank/unit is over 10% of your army you could simply paint him/it/them over two months (the sort of time your general/tank/expensive unit deserves!). For example, last year my monthly target was 200 points and I painted a Stompa (600 points). I split painting the model into (roughly) 3 months of 200 points, posting new WIP shots each month.

Q : Do I have to use my 2 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : No, you don't have to use them at all. If you can manage to paint/post for the full 12 months then congratulations, you'll have exceeded your target and truly embodied the spirit of the Tale!

Q : If I 'catch up' with my points, can I 'buy back' a 'Joker'?
A : Yes, just let me know in your monthly post if you would like to do this. For example, if you have a target of 200 points per month and have played one of your 'Jokers', you could 'buy back' your 'Joker' if you can manage to make up the 'Jokered' 200 points at some point. This could be from painting 400 points one month, painting 300 points over two months, or just making up smaller amounts here and there (as long as you're back on track).

Q : What's with the D6 roll in your post?
A : The D6 roll was an idea introduced in the last Tale to help ensure that everyone gets some comments on their work. If everyone rolls a D6 when they post (I use the D&D dice roller (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/dice/dice.htm) if I don't have a D6 to hand), then we should have six roughly equal groups each month. Then, if you comment on those people who rolled the same as you everyone will receive some feedback. So, if you roll a 1, comment on all of the other 1's, if you rolled a 2, comment on all of the other 2's, and so on. Of course, if you have the time/want to, there's nothing stopping you from commenting on anyone's/everyone's work.

I'll start off by posting an entry for June. Feel free to copy my post to use as a template (edited to suit your army), but as long as you post your Monthly total, Total to date, Unit(s) painted and a picture then that's fine.

If anyone has any other questions, please direct them to me (misterboff).

misterboff's Dark Eldar: May 2011 (D6 roll = 3)

MONTHLY TOTAL: 290 POINTS (monthly target: 175 points)
TOTAL TO DATE: 1531 POINTS (target to date: 1400 points)

BACKGROUND/THEME: "Wych Cult of the Blade Denied"
The Blade Denied is an elder Wych House that specialises in the art of using their foe's weapons against themselves. The irony of seeing a warrior impaled upon his own blade is always a favourite of this cult, for it shows that even a weapon cannot be trusted.

Archon (Clonefield, Combat Drugs, Ghostplate Armour, Haywire Grenades, Huskblade, Soul Trap, Webway Portal) - 185 points
Succubus (Agoniser, Blast Pistol, Haywire Grenades) - 105 points

The Archon was straight from the blister, but I gave the Succubus a Blast Pistol. The only problem was that every other Dark Eldar model is right-handed, so I had to do a bit of converting. I swapped the spear arm for a Wych Power Sword arm (as it was the closest match), and then removed the Power Sword from above the hilt and replaced it with the top half from a Blast Pistol. So it just looks like it's got a fancy handle.

I'm roughly following the painting guide from WD371, but substituting purple in where necessary. The bases are simply Astronomicon Grey followed by Citadel Snow.

Silver: Boltgun/Badab/Mithril
Bronze: Tin Bitz/Devlan/Dwarf
Black: Chaos/Adeptus/Badab
Eldar Flesh: Space Wolves+Tallarn/Devlan/SWG+Dheneb/Rotting
Flayed Skin: Tallarn(+Vomit/Dark)/Devlan/Tau Sept Ochre/Rotting
Purple: Hormagaunt/Leviathan/Liche
Blue: Mordian/Asurmen/Enchanted/Ice
Green: Knarloc/Thraka/Goblin/Scorpion
Yellow: Iyanden/Gryphonne/Bad Moon
Orange: MSO/Baal/Vomit/Blazing
Pink: Mechrite+Dheneb/Baal/Mechrite+Skull
White: Astronomican/Badab/Skull

Highs: I didn't mind painting metal models, and think that my conversion turned out quite well...
Lows: ...but I hated assembling metal models! They were both quite flimsy and I just couldn't get them to stick at all. In the end I had to go out a buy a hobby drill just so that I could pin them. It was my first time pinning too, so took a while to get the hang of. Also, I didn't really want to include an Archon in my army, but I need a Webway Portal so I don't get massacred everytime!

I'm going to attempt to kitbash a few units that aren't available in plastic...

[Archon, Succubus, HQ]

Zark the Damned

Not sure if it's technically a Joker as I have already finished my pledge, but I didn't manage to get anything painted this last month (been too distracted with Borderlands...). Did manage to get a couple of squads assembled though.

05-07-2011, 07:18
djc's beastman guard

MONTHLY TOTAL: 55 points
TOTAL TO DATE: 2060 points

A solitary Chimera - 55 points

The contents.

Highs: Er.....
Lows:What with one thing and another I didn't get much tale painting done at all this month.

Next Month: Must finish the Veterans and crack on with my mortar teams.

06-07-2011, 20:18
Unfortunately it is going to have to be a joker for me this month. Sorry guys and good luck with all your submissions.

08-07-2011, 10:52
ARMY: Rutgar's Biel-Tan-themed eldar army

UNIT: 10 regular howling banshees, 1 exarch with executioner and 1 exarch with mirror swords

HIGHS AND LOWS: I was a bit intimidated with getting the right bone colour frem a black undercoat but it was easier than I expected. Great fun to paint.

STILL TO DO: The basing.

POINTS: 236 points

TOTAL POINTS: 236 + 742 = 978 points - I believe this gets me one of my jokers back...

NEXT UP: A war walker with scatter lasers

I tried to get some good pictures of just the exarches, but they weren't any good, so sorry about that.

Mini77's Dead Suns: June 2011 (D6 roll = 2)

MONTHLY TOTAL: 1024 Points
TOTAL TO DATE: 3866 Points

BACKGROUND/THEME: Dead Suns Space Marines

DIY Space Marine chapter. I have units and characters from across all the Marine books (except Space Wolves) so I can switch at will for different play styles and models.

Terminator Apothecary/Sanguinary Priest; 85 points
Mephiston, Lord of Death; 250 points
Assault Squad (5), Power Weapon x 1; 115 points
Vindicator; 155 points
Whirlwind; 90 points
Predator Destructor, Autocannon, Heavy Bolter Sponsons; 100 points
Furioso Librarian; 175 points
Imperial Guardsmen (9), Lasgun, Krak Grenades; 54 points

The Terminator was put together from my bitz box. Narthecium came from the power armoured Command Squad frame and was grafted onto a Storm Bolter arm cut off at the elbow. Right arm also has a weapon from the Command Squad frame (Champion's power sword).

Mephiston (counts as) was made from a variety of parts. Main body is a Forgeworld Sevrin Loth with his legs removed at the knees. Assault Marine lower legs were added. Backpack is from the Finecast Astorath the Grim and the Force weapon was donated by a metal Librarian that was chopped up.

Furioso Librarian was constructed using the Venerable Dreadnought kit coupled with the close combat weapons from the Furioso kit.

Tanks and guardsmen were basically built from the box.

Nothing new here, simply following my basic routines. Both Librarian's armour is Mordian Blue, Ultramarine Blue and Space Wolves Grey shaded with Regal Blue. Made a nice change from all the black and white.

These are finished. I need to pick up some batteries for the camera so will post proper pics next week.

Highs: Got lots done.
Lows: Good month, no real lows.

The Fellblade will probably be next which should put me on track to paint the remaining 600 points or so I need in the final month of this year's Tale.

Dark Eldar 1500 points: June 2010

MONTHLY TOTAL: 185 POINTS (monthly target: 150 points)

By the end of the tale my army will not be complete. I will have 1500pts however, I will just enter my Dark Eldar into the Tale next year to finish off the army.

The Kabal of the Bloody Tongue

Razorwing Jetfighter with splinter cannon, 2 necrotoxin missiles, flickerfield and night shields (185 pts)

Straight out of the box.

I want my Dark Eldar to have a neon/Tron feel to them.
The armour is mostly dark blue (Necron Abyss) with light blue (Ice Blue) highlights. Some plates are painted silver.
Glyphs and hair are bright green (Scorpion Green) highlighted to white.
I'm painting the Dark Eldar's skin as I would bone. Dheneb Stone base with a Devlan Mud wash. Highlighted with more Dheneb Stone up to white.
The bases are bits of slate and sand. The slate is painted Codex Grey and drybrushed with Fortress Grey. The sand is painted Snakebite Leather and drybrushed with Dheneb Stone and then given a wash of Devlan Mud. Finally I added some static grass.

Highs: A large chunk of points painted in a very short time.
Lows: Gluing the engines on incorrectly so that now one of them skew whiff! Will it come back off? Of course not

Hopefully a Talos and a Venom for my Trueborn.

Pudsey098 Evil Sunz Orks : June 2011 (D6 Roll = 1)

Part 1 of 2

Goff Evil Sunz Rok ‘n’ Rolla (WD351) - 520
BuzzGob (IA8)– 100
Weirdboy – 75

The stompa arms are inspired from the Goff Rok ‘n’ Rolla Stompa from WD351 (built by Fil Dunn) The arms are both stompa close combat weapons with a cardboard tube and spikey bits.

Bozzgob is straight out the box with a different grot to accompany him, as the thinking grot fits better I think. I painted him to stick close to the image in IA8 as I wanted him to be a ‘Ork Consultant’ rather than just turning him into a Big Mek for the army.

Weirdboy in Part 2

10-07-2011, 13:02
Part 2 of this months submission...

The Weirdboy is the Warhammer model with a friend holding him down and a spare head and glyph to make him more sutable for the future.

Highs : Really enjoyed the paining of the weirdboy used layering all over and on the whole it worked out well.

Something clanking around the mek shed…..

11-07-2011, 00:05
My stuff is coming later on tonight. But it could be past midnight by the time i post.

11-07-2011, 14:00
Hey gang. I'm gonna have to do it again this month

It's not that I haven't had time to paint anything, just nothing for my Tale armies. Between my bike crash, commission work, and my daughter being out of school for the summer, my schedule has been pretty tight.

Here are a few shots of what I've been working on:

Some Dark Angels Marines for a commission gig

A Drop Pod for the same commission gig

and finally, a Rune Priest for a Deathwatch RPG campaign that my local gaming group is running

I've also done a little work on some of my Orks, but not enough to meet the point limit, hence the joker this month. I'll have it together next month for sure.

Great work so far gang, keep it up!

11-07-2011, 14:47
sadly this month i too have to take a Joker, as i had a lot of work (fortunately), but wasn't able to finish my models.
Thus i will have more finished for next month.

Will post comments later this week and wish you all a great time.

11-07-2011, 18:35
Sorry gang, I will have an entry but will need till later tonight and into possibly tomorrow to finish.

Also, is this the last month of the tale or is next month. Refresh my memory?

11-07-2011, 18:38
June was month 10, so July and August to go.

11-07-2011, 18:39
June was month 10, so July and August to go.

Thanks Bro! We are so close to the end I really want to post what i have, but totally finished.

Not with anything left to do.

11-07-2011, 18:49
Great work everyone, I've been crook as so I'm not quite finished my entry this month. Should be done in a couple of days though.

12-07-2011, 00:36
Comment time!

@djc: Another great Tank, and I like the 'knifey' theme to the extra details.

@Rutgar: Your Banshees look really good, I'd never tell they were painted over a black basecoat. The Exarch weapons help them stand out and make them a bit more individual compared to each other too.

@Mini77: Sounds like you've had a very busy month again, and done some great conversions too. Mephiston looks brilliant and the Narthecium looks fine on Terminator Armour.

@Fanny Crowbar: Wow, that looks phenomenal. Awesome work as usual, and particularly the canopy. I don't know if I've got the guts to attempt painting mine...

@pudsey098: It's nice to see your Stompa finished, and the colour scheme suits it too - nice and rusty looking. I'm considering getting Buzzgob to use as a KFF Big Mek for my Deathskulls, and it's great to see an alternative angle/paintjob. The Weirdboy is good too.

@Irondog: Although it's not for your Tale, that's some lovely work (especially the DA - I've always loved the robed bodies).

@everyone else: If everyone else could try to post in the next couple of days that would be great.

I'm just waiting for three more bits (two from ebay, one from a friend) before I get properly started with this month's entry. Hopefully I'll be able to get most things assembled/basecoated over the next day or two, and maybe start painting later in the week. This month, I'll be attempting a unit of 5 Hekatrix Bloodbrides (based on Wyches) in a Venom, and 5 Beastmasters (based on Hellions), with the Warp Beasts to follow next month...

12-07-2011, 17:39
@Fanny Crowbar: Wow, that looks phenomenal. Awesome work as usual, and particularly the canopy. I don't know if I've got the guts to attempt painting mine...

Thanks man! I remember when the Eldar Falcon came out. I was dreading painting the canopy. TBH the Razorwing canopy was pretty straightforward. I just made sure that my wrists were resting on the table edge.

Comment Time Boyz!

@ Misterboff: what a fitting pair those two make. I really like the thing the archon is holding in his hand, looks cool as hell. And the pink hair on the succubus is well done and a nice touch IMO.

@DJC: dude, I dig those swords that adorn the side of the chimera. One thing is for sure your army has mad Character. Well painted tank too.

@ Rutgar: Very nicely painted Banshess in the standard scheme. The bone color looks great. Be sure to post a nice finished photo when they are all based!

@Mini77: That Sang Priest is a work of art! and the white on the termie model is some of the best white I have ever seen. Great work man!

@ Fanny Crowbar: Dude I love your Tron Dark Eldar... that Razorwing looks boss and is very well painted. I wish I could get nice fine edging lines like that when I paint. Your going to have a very handsome force when your done.

@Pudsey098: DA ORKS IS BAACK!!!! In order... Da Stompa is Choice! and looks great. Buzzgob is painted very well and I like the way his armor, and equipment is rusty and looks weathered. Weirdboy & Squig are very effective and well painted as well.

@ Irondog: your work is always solid and the Dark Angels are no exception.

Everyone else... hope to see you back next month. We are almost done Kids!

14-07-2011, 19:20
Comments for all...

@ Misterboff: Good looking HQ choices, nice neat conversion, good use of pink in the hair to add more character to the model

@DJC: Good looking Chimera, I like the swords on the side, nice simple addition to really give it character

@ Rutgar: Good looking squad, they look very dynamic I especially like the red manes as its gives them all a sense of motion

@Mini77: The Mephiston is a really nice model, the wings fit in really well. The terminator look nice and clean too

@ Fanny Crowbar: Great clean looking Razorwing, really like the subtle outlining of the armour with the extreme highlights at the corners

@ Irondog: Good looking Dark Angels, I see your bike injury isn't not slowing down you too much

@ Razormasticator : Good looking squad, nice combination of the blue and grey for a snow background (weirdly enough my Guard Storm Troopers are almost exactly the same model design - Great minds think alike) Thanks for the comments too!

Hey guys,

unfortunately life got in the way of my painting these mast couple of weeks and I won't be able to finish my goal. I do have to say that I'm happy with what I was able to do. Somehow I lately have trouble motivating myself long enough te finish an army (or at least part of it).

I'm contemplating entering the next Tale with something completely different, but something I tried already a year or two back.

Congratulations to all who made it and maybe we'll see each other in hte next one.

18-07-2011, 14:56
@ Mini... Dude, that dreadnought is Gorgeous!!!! Awesome work there.

@ Badgobbkla... we will miss you Friend. Hopefully you find a way to get inspired!

18-07-2011, 17:55
Well my family and I have all been pretty sick the last few weeks, so my hobby time and motivation have been sorely lacking. But we've all gotten over our illness and I've even managed to finish my stuff!

Perplexiti’s Space Wolves: 2011

BACKGROUND/THEME: Ragnar Blackmane’s Great Company.

UNIT(S): 6 Long Fangs with Wolfguard.

BUILD/CONVERSIONS: The Wolfguard is just a current plastic termie, with a Dark Angel sword arm, the Long Fangs are mostly classic 2nd ed minis. I was going to give them the metal Heavy bolters etc, but didn't want to cover up the detail on their fronts so armed them with Rocket launchers instead, one from the 2nd ed starter set the rest from 3rd ed on. The Long Fang pack leader is one of the 2nd ed wolfguard minis.

PAINTING/BASING: Basecoated black, then a Fenris grey coat, with very heavy drybrushes of shadow grey then spacewolf grey. The metal bits were chainmail with a badab black wash. I forget the name of the yellow I've been using for the lenses, but it's put over a iyanden darksun base.

STILL TO DO: Just the unit markings and the basing, I've decided to sit down at the end of the tale and base all of them at once.

HIGHS AND LOWS: No lows again, was a blast to keep painting classic stuff.

NEXT MONTH: Definitely some more infantry, I’ve got some blood claws howling at me to do them, or maybe a land speeder, I'm taking bets on how lazy I'll be this month.

Long Fangs:

Army so far:

Next month: Some more Infantry I think, maybe, or not.

18-07-2011, 21:32
Alright, comments time. As there's not many of us left I'll comment on everyone's work.

Page 1:

@misterboff: More good looking Dark Eldar, great work man.

@djc: Well done, you've got your vehicles all looking really consistent with each other.

@Rutgar: Awesome Banshees, really well done armour too.

@Mini77: That termie apocathery looks fantastic mate! That white is perfect.

@Fanny Crowbar: Niiice, That tron highlighting looks sweet on that jet, I also like the green light on the pilot.

@pudsey098: Great orks, nice use of a fantasy model too.

Page 2:

@razormasticator: Nice Vets, cool version of harker.

It's a shame so many have dropped out, but oh well. More glory for those of us who finish!

Keep up the great work guys, and I can't wait to see what comes out next month.

19-07-2011, 20:10

Sorry to see you go so late in the Tale Badgobbla, but you have managed to get plenty done like you said. I think I'll be starting the '2011/2012 sign-up' thread at the start of August to give people a month to join in, so hopefully we'll see you there.

Well my family and I have all been pretty sick the last few weeks, so my hobby time and motivation have been sorely lacking. But we've all gotten over our illness and I've even managed to finish my stuff!

Glad you're better now perplexiti, and nice work on the Long Fangs - you'll wear your Scatter Dice out with all those Blast templates!

So far this month I've managed to assemble everything I need for the last two months of the Tale (bar two conversions), and I've almost finished painting a unit of five Hekatrix Bloodbrides. Only 5 Beastmasters and a Venom left to do by the end of the month...

Hi guys and gals,
