View Full Version : How many points do you typically play?

I always like to play around 1,500. A few of my buddies have been going up to 2,000 and 2,500 lately because they play Grey Knights and "can't" field a decent list at that level. What about your group?

1500-1750 seems to be the most balanced to me.

04-07-2011, 17:13
Used to be 1500 but has lately been more 1750 points games. Still small enough to be manageable but with enough points for a nice toy or two.

Grey Knights and "can't" field a decent list at that level. What about your group?

aww diddums! Cant afford all the nice stuff? Just up the points limit so you can. Wonder if Tau players can say "yeah I'll play but only 1500 points because we cant get a good list higher than that."

04-07-2011, 17:29
usually 2000pts. I feel it's the best points level for where you can make an effective force that covers all the bases and still have room for fun stuff, at 1500pts armies often feel...incomplete. That said, start going higher than 2000 and the game rapidly breaks down as some armies hit their FoC barriers. Why they do 2500pts for 'Ard Boyz and then wonder why the Imperial Guard do so well is beyond me.

04-07-2011, 17:31
Here lately my brother and I have been playing 4000 point games. Because I can field almost my entire nurgle army and he fields all of my loyalist scum(sm).

6k is most common here... but sometimes we go big.

My group and I usually do around 1500-2k just because of time constraints. And I currently only have 1500-1750 of guard right now.

04-07-2011, 18:23
1,850 is standard here

04-07-2011, 19:16
1750 is the new black where I play, as there are a bunch of us starting to prepare for throne of skulls

04-07-2011, 19:29
Normally we all play 1750 everything above it just takes to long since we normally play in our local shop.

04-07-2011, 19:45
at my flgs its 1750.
i would rather 2000 so i can run a tau gunline army

want to gun line to be broardsides :)

1000 or 1500, most common is 1000.

I've been building all my lists to 1500pts lately. It's what the LGS tournaments seem to most typically run. Also, I find I get more satisfying results when I add points to a list than when I subtract. So, I'd rather have my lists be on the low side and get to add more stuff to them than be on the high side and have to take stuff out.

04-07-2011, 20:14
2k most of the time. The more the better imo but 2k is about the perfect amount for me.

05-07-2011, 00:49
1500 for me. Means you have difficult decisions to make in list design.

05-07-2011, 00:51
1250-1750 usually.

05-07-2011, 01:19
I've seen games from around 1500 to 2k around here. But I prefer 1750 or so, that's before the FOC start s****ing itself for some armies.

05-07-2011, 02:08
Pretty much exclusively 2k. Sometimes a lot more but that's normally for apoc type games and the very rare under 2k game.

05-07-2011, 02:25
I've been noticing a lot of groups where I live and in other Canadian markets tend towards the 1850pt value, its similar to 2k but forces people to really play with the utmost efficiency in tournies and still lets you get a good force to toy with in friendlies.

05-07-2011, 04:35
Between 1500-2000. Sometimes 1000 points if we don't have the time.

05-07-2011, 06:59
1000 - 1500 usually. I quite like sub 1k games too. It's rare we go above 1500.

05-07-2011, 08:23
1,500. I don't feel the game is quite that balanced if you go higher.

Usually 1000 pts, as my table is 4' x 4' and anything bigger gets cramped. I actually like it, it really forces you to put a bit more thought in to your list instead of relying on having everything you want. Plus, the games are quick, it's easy to keep track of everything that's going on... all round winner for me. For some special scenarios, we even drop it down to 500 or 750. I like Kill Team too.

05-07-2011, 11:08
Mostly 1750 to 1850

Sometimes 1500 or 1550 if time is an issue.

05-07-2011, 11:33
We tend to use 1750 as a default, although we are just going through an escalating Planetary Empires Campaign (6 Rounds - 750,1000,1250,1500,1750,2000) so for the next 8 months our games will be of very different points values! :)

05-07-2011, 13:30
We usually do 1750 around here. I think there are balance problems above and below this number. 1750 means you can't have everything, but there's enough points available to build on a certain theme. More dice rolling means less randomness, so generalship matters more than at the lower point levels.

05-07-2011, 13:34
I usually play 2000, but if my opponent can't muster a force that size I will play any points level up to that.

05-07-2011, 13:42
Depends but usually around 3500 -5000 as my local group mainly plays apocolypse and themed campaigns. At the moment its a low 1000 point battle as my Tyranids are built up. Recently finished a campaign with my Guard/Chaos and we were running battles around 7500 points so we could use everything available in our collections.

We don't get to play much so make the battles as large as possible when we do

200-1500pts. Personally I like the 200pt kill team, 500pt & 1000pts the most. On the whole 40k scales quite well but some larger vehicles and SC can be a pain in smaller games.

05-07-2011, 15:01
2k usually.....but only my IG and chaos can do that, my other armies can't afford to go any higher

05-07-2011, 15:04
Varies a lot, but I'd say 2K is probably my most common total.

05-07-2011, 15:40
Either <1000 or >4000. I find smaller battles with themed objectives are very good fun as you can't afford to throw away men and its either 'toys or boys'. Bigger battles with unlimited HQ options are always a laugh.

Personally, I call "BS" on that.

While some lists "scale" better for big games than other, IMO there isn't a list in 40K that needs 2000+ points to work properly. People are either too lazy to trim and optiomize their lists, or just want to field all the cool toys without any recourse. It's easy to just create an "everyting-plus-the-kitchen-sink" list if you're playing 2500 points, a 1500 or even 1750 point limit requires you to make some hard choices and learn to work with a more limited set of "tools". Plus, some older codexes actually struggle to field competative lists at higher point totals due to limited "good" options.

05-07-2011, 15:57
Time is a virtue. I only have time for 1000-1500 games :(

I have played a 66 000pts game. Took 2 days and we did not finish. But it was clear who won.

05-07-2011, 16:16
1000pts usually for me. Really makes me think about what goes in and what doesn't since there is no room for wasting points.

Boo-Hoo-Hoo. Grey knights How about manning up and playing without your super'spensive death machine units?

Wonder if Tau players can say "yeah I'll play but only 1500 points because we cant get a good list higher than that."

Nah, let 'em take 2X FoC list ;)

2k is a rare upper limit these days, due to time and space constraints. With the occasional Apoc thrown in for good measure.

If I ever get to play these days, I just dedicate an entire day to it. Usually multiple players, about 5k per person.

Ocasionally I get to play the nice 2k point game, but that's very rare.

05-07-2011, 22:00
2000 or 500pts.

Different philosophies for both levels. Keeps you on your toes.
Also, after 23-odd years, 1500 point games seem a little noobish.

06-07-2011, 04:23
i play 500 pts with my 8 yearold, 2500 pts for the last month ('ard boyz prep)... tourneys cycle 1500, 2000, 2500.

I like playing at 2000. that feels like the magic level for 40k just now.

At 2500 my armies start to get brutal (nids do very well at this point level)

1500 is good for a short game vs someone you have never met before.

1850 was the gold standard till about 6 months ago. This is not a bad level to play at as basics are down a toy or two comes out to make things interesting.

I'll be doing a lot of 1000 in the near future.

06-07-2011, 05:49
Usually we play at 2,000pts...But this weekend will have a small tournament at 1,250 and maybe will be smth like escalation (nest at 1,500 up to 2,500 )...

06-07-2011, 08:56
1850 points!

06-07-2011, 09:27
Well, since I play Marines, obviously the bigger the better for me. Hell, I can field 1,500 points worth of Terminators alone.

Paint it Red
06-07-2011, 09:45
The tournament standard around here are 1750. So that is the normal points level I play. But I still play 1000 points when time is short and 2000+ points when I just want to play a big game.

06-07-2011, 09:59
Personally, I call "BS" on that. :rolleyesWhile it is almost certainly exagerated, it is not total BS. I tried out a PalWing list last week, and even at 2500 points I was still having to make some really hard choices, and couldn't fit everything I wanted (like a Librarian as a second HQ choice).

By contrast, my opponent fielded every daemon model he owned, in fewer units than he wanted due to running out of FOC slots (I said he should have said something, I'd have been quite happy for him to use two FOC slots, but as mentioned in another thread it was a bit of a non-game anyway).

06-07-2011, 11:01
The majority of my games have been 2k. I like to be able to take a good selection of units. I have played a couple of games ranging up to 3k, but pretty irregular with those.

06-07-2011, 18:53
I play 2,000 almost always, that's pretty much the standard with the groups I play. On occasion, if we're playing with someone practicing for a tournament with other point values we'll tune to that in order to help them out, but otherwise 2k is the standard for us.

06-07-2011, 19:14
Usually 1,500 but sometimes 1,000 point doubles.
