View Full Version : Word association Chaos Legion style.

For the last couple of days I've been fiddling about with some campaign rules and I'd like to plunder the Background crew's collective think for a few interesting words or phrases to give to some special rules I'm cooking up.

Here's the general gist, I want a word (or a collection thereof) that best describes the character or doctrine of each of the Chaos Legions, something that could be attached to the Leader of a warband as a rule to represent his expertise in the particular style his legion were famed for, or are now infamous for.

Needs to be generic enough that it could be applied to guys who don't necessarily belong to that (or any) Legion but still have a "ring" to it, because while "Skulls for Khorne" would be easy enough, it'd kinda suck for a Slaaneshi Sorceror to roll that one up.

The Legions are:-
Lunar Wolves/Sons of Horus/Black Legion.
Wordbearers.
Alpha Legion.
Night Lords.
Iron Warriors.
Thousand Sons.
World Eaters.
Emperor's Children.
Death Guard.

Included as a quote/copy-paste freindly template rather than a beginners guide to the Dread traitor Legions..

The only two I've come up with that I'm even vaguely happy with is "Kill them all" (hardly original) for the Khorne happy Chaos Lord and "Endure" for the Death Guard.
To give you a general feel for the rules, they affect how the army deploys, how it performs or how it "wins". Think bonuses to stealing initiative, cunning deployment perks and a smattering of once per game army wide "buff" powers and you're about there.

Be as poetical, litteral or silly as you like, I've hit a dead end.

Fire away!

I hope this helps. I went with phrases/slogans instead of literal word association.

Black Legion- Never forget, never forgive.
Word Bearers- Embrace the word.
Alpha Legion- You are already undone.
Night Lords- Ave dominus nox.
Iron Warriors- Iron within, iron without.
Thousand Sons- All is dust.
World Eaters- There is naught but war.
Emperor's Children- More.
Death Guard- We are eternal.

Alpha Legion - "I am Alpharus" or "We are the Hydra" game rule, 1st time per game character is instant killed, replace the dead model with a standard grunt from the unit attached, and put the character back in place of the dead model. If no models are attached this rule has no effect. Models must have the same armour, or both be mounted, or both be jump infantry.

is this sort of what you are looking for?

The Legions are:-

Wordbearers - Glory to the thw dark gods
Alpha Legion - Out-flank and annihilate :shifty:
Night Lords - Despair for we come for you
Iron Warriors - Take and hold, drive these dogs back
Thousand Sons - You cannot fight fate

Black Legion-"Death to the False Emperor!"
World Eaters-"Kill! Maim! Burn!"
Thousand Sons-"Knowledge is power."
Death Guard-"It is inevitable."
Emperor's Children-"Give me more!"
Word Bearers-"All glory unto Chaos!"
Iron Warriors-"Your worlds will crumble!"
Night Lords-"I am terror! I am the night!"
Alpha Legion-"We are legion."

Framing them all as battlecries the warlord might favor, and avoiding any direct references to specific gods or legions.

Emperor's Children wouldn't just be "more" or "Give me more"... it would be like "more..... more... more... moremoremoremoremoremoremoremoreMORE MORE MORE MORE NOW!" Total desperation and lust and desire and arrogance all bundled up together, like a even more arrogant and blinkered version of The Master in The End of Time (for some more DW references).

Night Lords- Ave dominus nox.

Would you believe that I didn't think of this one? I considered Preysight but not this....

Lunar Wolves/Sons of Horus/Black Legion - Endless War

The whole thing is called "The Long War" just because I think it sounds both understated and epic at the same time.

Night Lords: "Fear is a blade that sharpens with use".

I like, is it a Curze quote??

Night Lords - Ave Dominus Nox/Midnight Clad

Didn't think of Midnight Clad either....*shame*

Emperor's Children - Perfection in Concert

I came close-ish to this with Symphony of Destruction[/cheesy Megadeth reference]

World Eaters Nom nom nom

Almost worth putting in for S&G :)

World Eaters - Kill! Maim! Burn!

Yes.

Alpha Legion .....
....is this sort of what you are looking for?

Initially no, but this thread is starting to convince me that some direct reference to specific Legions might be called for after all......Dammit!

"Lash prince, Oblits, Plague Marines!" It the battle cry of all chaos over the past 4 years.

Or why Possessed? WHHHHHYYYYY?!?!?!?!?!?!?

And CSM Dreads: Where'd everybody go?

Quite fun to do...

When you haven't sat staring at a screen suffering from a "blockage"

You, Sir, are on to something here.

Emperor's Children wouldn't just be "more" or "Give me more"... it would be like "more..... more... more... moremoremoremoremoremoremoremoreMORE MORE MORE MORE NOW!"

Moar!!!!!!!!!! Or perhaps just singing along to Billy Idol? :D
Bonus points for DW references, always!

Surprised and a little dissapointed nobody's suggested "Metal Bawkses!?!?!"
But otherwise sterling work so far chaps....I have to think up a whole new raft of legion specific rules now. Thinking 6 per Legion with upto 30 non specific and general ones.

Keep it up! I want more..... more... more... moremoremoremoremoremoremoremoreMORE MORE MORE MORE NOW!

I like, is it a Curze quote??

I believe it's Curze quote via the Talonmaster in 'Lord of the Night.' I don't remember it in 'Soul Hunter' or 'Throne of Lies' (Doing Blood Reaver this weekend)

Would you believe that I didn't think of this one? I considered Preysight but not this....

I think of "You are coming with me..."

Word Bearers - Their Will Be Done

And for the slightly humorous - World Eaters - There Will Be Blood.

Nope, it's a quote from Soul Hunter, an excerpt from Malcharions book. Full quote is as follows:
"Surprise is an insubstantial blade, a sword worthless in war.
It breaks when troops rally. It snaps when commanders hold the line.
But fear never fades.
Fear is a blade that sharpens with use.
So let the enemy know we come. Let their fears defeat them as everything falls dark.
As the world's sun sets...
As the city is wreathed in its final night.
Let ten thousand howls promise ten thousand claws.
The Night Lords are coming.
And no soul that stands against us shall see another dawn".

Awesome quote. Utterly awesome. Also, another Night Lord rule-name in there. "Let ten thousand howls promise ten thousand claws."

Ah excellent, I sped through it so quickly Malcharion's thoughts got glossed a bit, especially as my mind wanted to make the rhyme... but they did not.

Lol. When I read the title, I thought it was each legion doing word association. I.E. sitting a marine from each legion down, and saying a word and having them say the first thing that comes to mind.

For example: World Eaters

I say "Love", they say "BLOOD!"
I say "Tree", they say "BLOOD!"
I say "Cars", they say "SKULLS!"
I say "Money", they say "BLOOD!"
I say "God", they say "KORNE!"
I say "Job", they say "BLOOD!"
I say "Peace", they say "SKULLS!"
I say "puppies", they say "cuddly!" :wtf:
I say "Water", they say "BLOOD!"

You get the idea. :D

AH yes, knew it sounded familiar, cheers :)

Also, another Night Lord rule-name in there. "Let ten thousand howls promise ten thousand claws."

Mathematically problematic to me, it implies either only half of the claw "providers" are actually howling or that, for some strange reason, each howler only brings a single claw....

ten thousand howls brings a hundred thousand claws? Ten per howler?

Lord-Caerolion
14-07-2011, 02:56
Well, the "claw" wasn't capitalised, so you could read claw in this case to mean the chain/swords of the Night Lords, rather than the Claws, which are squads.

Inquisitor Engel

Ten fingers per howler.

Yes, you could simply say that each howler was a "claw" in and of himself.

Claws as a unit designation just causes more problems, it suggests each squad has one designated howler :eyebrows:

Anyway, the intention is understood. So I'll stop....sorry.....
