View Full Version : My first SoM Game

I had a blast! There was some insane stuff going on.

HE had first turn. On this turn he used the cantrip on my tooled up Chimera to send it packing.

On my first turn my Slann was able to cast 8 Lore of Fire spells and 2 cantrips on 14 dice as Lore of Fire was in ascendancy. I reduced his Swordmasters to like 5 guys. Truth be told they should have all died from that barrage, but I rolled poorly on my 6d6 fireball and he saved well. I also used the cantrip to take his Shaggoth off the table this turn.

His second magic phase I used cube of darkness on his first spell and then shut down the whole phase.

Another thing that really influenced the game was my Slann miscasting on two dice with my first spell of the third turn which turned all of the wizards into toads (which I feel should have no effect on a Slann since he is already a toad:)). This caused me to lose like 20 dice when fire was ascendant again! Then my slann and one skink failed to come back in his magic phase but all but one of his wizards came back. I then failed to bring back either my slann or my other skink on my next phase, so I tried throwing lots of dice at my few Heavens spells and cantrips that I could. I ended up miscasting with my skink and he turned into a monster. Luckily my Slann came back in his next magic phase so I could try and dispel again.

Another fun thing for me was when his storm dragon charged into my spears. My Scar Vet had the Dawnstar and I had dominance. So his dragon killed like 6 Saurus, but then my Scar Vet landed 8 auto-hit, auto-wound,2d6 Multi-wounds on the dragon. He saved a few of them with his armor, but I did way more than enough wounds, we didn't even roll them:) It would have been kind of fun to see what he would have gotten.

There were a couple of weird rules things we ran into. On Let the Four Winds Blow it says nothing about targeting units in buildings. I assumed they just took the hits as they couldn't move, like the Wind Blast spell from heavens. That is what we ended up going with, although we thought not targetable and making them exit the building might be viable options as well. It did allow me to drop his level 2, and I had a chance of dropping his level 4, so it was kind of important to the game, but I am pretty certain we played it right.

Also, he brought a Storm Dragon which has a breath weapon like the lore of metal spells, but doesn't say no armor save. We played it as no armor save though. Not 100% sure if that is right, but assuming GW just missed a line on that one too.

Anyway, I had a blast and want to play again. Maybe Lord Baerion will get on and give his impression too.

Good to hear you had fun.

Taking the cube of darkness was a bit of a low blow though ;)

Well I had a 50/50 shot it would be awesome. He has access to the Vortex shard too, which always works and can be used immediately so can even get around a irresistible force.

I think the dirtiest thing really was the extra die per spell. I only rolled 14 dice, but with fire in ascendancy I was able to cast 10 spells, he dispelled one with dice and scrolled another.

Yeah, slaans are really mean in SoM, with my empire i just need to weather the storm(pun intended).

Cube of Darkness is just naughty. But then again I take a seal of destruction ARF ARF!!!

Yeah, my opponent had the HE equivalent of that in his list.

If you ever run into a turn where you don't have ascendance on the right lore, but you do have Dominance, try summoning a second Slaan w/ Loremaster for whichever Lore is at +5. Always good for a laugh :D

Wow-that reassures me not to play SoM.
Glad it was fun for you though.

It was a ton of fun. My only disappointment was the monters getting sucked away. I was even a bit disappointed his did as I wanted to see them fight.

Few things;

- I can't help but feel ye may have misplayed Unbind as it seems unlikely ye both ended up rolling a 5 (though this is speculated since you haven't stated as such).
- Let The Four Winds Blow can't knock models out of building so you played it right.
- Storm Dragon's breath weapon allows armour saves; it doesn't say that they are denied so why assume otherwise.

As for the report, well done, and I admire your attitude; I've seen too many players go SoM hate just because they can't control every little thing that's going on and take it too seriously.

I have to agree here. Good report, and I'm glad you had fun since that's the point of playing any game in the first place.

My first SoM game was a blast too. And that was facing Slann :) Which was the only character of my opponent's that survived. I even summoned a Slann with my Empire wizard on the last turn just to taunt him, but by then we both knew I had already won :p

Nope, we both rolled a 5. That cantrip would be a little ridiculous if it was so easy to get off and auto killed them. I didn't save dice to dispel because he had some other nasty stuff to stop and I figured there is 66% chance that whatever he rolls wont bother me too much and I might even get frenzy. I didn't really want him charging my line on the first turn either.

I was pretty certain the 4 winds spell would do the hits, because it is basically a boosted Wind Blast. My opponent was a bit doubtful though.

As far as the storm dragons breath weapon, what armor save do you get then as it doesn't have a specific strength. It hits you one whatever your AS is like the lore of metal spells.

Regular armour save.
