Storm of renewal (lore of Life cataclysm spell) states that once the template has been placed you get to choose the direction you want the template to go. Is it possible to have the template move backwards through the wizard and coming out in the direction of his rear (no pun intended? maybe maybe not, im tired)

No as one of the requirements of casting a Magical Vortex is that it lies within the caster's front arc.

Yes, but he should be able to place it within the front arc, and then have the direction it moves be towards the wizard who cast it.

Ya as the spell states that only the placement of the small template's center has to be in the front arc, not the direction. He meets the front arc requirment by having the vortex's placement in the front arc. The BRB FaQ also supports being able to send your vortex's through friendly troops.

On that note is it possible to cast a magic vortex into a combat that you are involved in? When the wizard is in close combat? I wasn't pleased when my friend pulled this one with purple sun...

Yes yes and yes :)

1. Place Template in Wizards Front Arc
2. Nominate Direction [CAN BE BACK THROUGH YOUR OWN UNIT]
3. Roll Artillery Dice and Multiply then Move

Magical Vortices can affect both you and your enemies troops without restriction.

Purple Sun into Combat is the perfect solution to nasty stuff with low initiative values ;) like lizardmen blocks, dwarf blocks, ogre deathstars, monsters etc.

So who is right Godless or B4z?

b4z is/was answering GorillaX3 and he is correct. Godless was answering your original question and was wrong (well in regards to your question which he didn't really read. His statement ,other than the no, was factual).
