View Full Version : In Midnight Clad - A Night Lord's Log

So it has come to this.

After nearly fifteen years in the hobby, loyal to the Emperor (with a side stop on a Craftworld and in the Tau Empire) I have come to earnestly begin my way down the path of corruption and bloodshed.

I have come to begin a Chaos army.

_____________

I actually started, and collected, a very Chaotic Night Lords warband in 2004, complete with Forge World Land Raider and all sorts of things, but never got around to painting it. I could never get the hang of the midnight blue and the brass.

Now I've come to challenge myself again. Thanks to Aaron Demski-Bowden's works I've batted around the idea of a Heresy-era army would work best. With the right conversions and 'counts-as' choices, they can be used as Heresy-era, Pre-Heresy or modern Night Lords.

I assembled a single model to test my planned paint scheme.

http://i.imgur.com/dBnuZM7.jpg

And began sculpting a chest-piece of a winged skull. Once this is done, I'll hopefully have the resources to either resin-cast it, or have it cast for me (current apartment space doesn't really allow for it) and have them distributed across my army.

Very, very WIP. It's been a long time since I sculpted anything...

http://i.imgur.com/OGwR25c.jpg

So there you have it. The beginnings of the Night Lords Fifth Company. This will be an interesting ride, no doubt.

I love your Imperial Fists Plog, so I'll be keeping a close eye on this!

Have you decided against the flappy hats or will you save them for veterans?

Looking forward to more!

Thanks Lowmans! I'm going to try and keep the visual aesthetic consistent across the armies. Going to be tough with such a dark one.

Well here we go.

I'm happy with the blue and the brass I've got.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5745/22703040522_3a8da69657_c.jpg

I'll need to buy some finer brushes. The Citadel fine detail brush isn't fine enough for those highlights. Unfortunately most fine brushes I find don't have the rigidity to really paint with...

Anyway, I'm satisfied with the overall tone. Still dark and realistic, with relatively subtle highlights. It matches my Fists' aesthetic. I'm quite happy and look forward to doing an army of these bad boys.

Now... what colour for those weapons?

Blue is:

Necron Abyss
Highlight Enchanted Blue
Wash Badab Black
Highlight Enchanted Blue
Wash Asurmen Blue

Brass is:

Tin Bitz
Highlight Shining Gold
Highlight Mithril Silver
Wash Gryphonne Sepia
Highlight Shining Gold
Wash Devlan Mud

Any tips for lightning everyone? I'm most disappointed in that.

Thoughts? :D

Another Night Lords plog to watch!
Very crisp painting, the fact that you kept the weapons completely clean shows you have a steady hand :p
My guess is you don't like how small the bolts are. Instead of painting a single detailed bolt on a segment of armor, make it something that continues from segment to segment. You won't need to paint so many tiny fingers and then it wont look like coral. I usually see them painted with a bolt or two starting on the torso and continuing down the leg/s. There are quite a few nice Night Lords plogs up right now, maybe check them out for some inspiration :)
Weapons would look good in dark red I think, maybe the same as the wings for the emblem. That's my two cents there.
Looking forward to updates, sir :)

Bravo, Engel. It's good to see Night Lords that are, essentially, black; or the colours one would expect to see around midnight. Slivers of very dark blue and all; I would suggest attempting to darken the trim colours. As for the lightning, I'd give it a miss personally - though I know that isn't what you asked, but more I feel the need to throw my unecessary opinion in to satiate my ego.

So I ordered the body for Tyberos off of eBay and was pleased with how easy it was to remove the single aquila. What to do with the shoulder pads though? I want something different and intimidating and semi-heresy-era, but many of the Cataphracti-esque ones I've seen (maxmini etc) seem TOO big in general.

Some quick photoshop from Forge World's size comparison chart (which I believe is all on the same plane and angle) lead me to this image:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5685/22528670570_a4f4534601_o.jpg

They SEEM big enough and while I'm not a big fan of the pose that resulted, it was enough promise for me to order some bitz from eBay to try out. They seem a tad lacking in protection, but also nicely "pre-Heresy-ish" without being gigantic. I'll probably recast Tyberos' helmet a few times for them too.

Thoughts? Or does anyone have any other suggestions?

Wowee wow. Subbing to this straight away. Looking good so far and I certainly wanna see more.

Or does anyone have any other suggestions?

With particular focus on Terminators, are you going the full ADB Atrementar on it? If so you might want to look at this (http://www.letthedicedecide.co.uk/product/High_Elf_Chariot_Lion_Head_Shoulder_Pad_HECH001) as a suggestion for the shoulder decoration, assuming you don't go for the bottom right example here (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Space_Marines/Space_Marine-Infantry-and-Accessories/ASTRAL-CLAWS-TERMINATOR-SHOULDER-PADS.html).

And, forgive me for asking, but are we likely to see any of 10th Co? Or Sevatar perhaps? Maybe "The Prophet of the Eighth Legion"?
I'm asking for all the usual geeky it-wood-bee-awsum reasons, of course, no pressure. ;) :shifty:

Back in 2004, the plan was to have these guys be Sahaal's loyal followers. Traitors, but anti-Chaos, generally. Since 10th and Talos have come along, their ETHOS has inspired me, but I still think they're a bit too Chaosy in a lot of the illustrations and conversions I've seen. I'll probably be leaning towards a Heresy-era feel with these guys so they can operate in any time period, depending on my tastes at the time. Still, there will be nothing newer than MKVI in the army if I can help it and as little chaos-spiky adornment as possible.

The Nostraman Lion thing always intrigued me. It'd be a nice little replacement for the Crux Terminatus. I don't remember if ALL Atramentar had it, or just the one aboard the Covenant of Blood. What about the power-armoured 1st Company? What about Sahaal? I feel a Nostraman Condor would fit much better with Sahaal's established background after all.

EDIT: Talked to A-D-B on Facebook and he clarified a few things:

The Nostraman Lion is just a thing he said. Anyone's call on whether it's the sign of the Atramentar. I have decided that it shall be!
Atramentar are the First Company before the Heresy, and at the outbreak.
After that, the Atramentar are Sevatar's elite (mostly made up from the First Company and its hangers-on).
Sahaal assumes command of the First Company with Sevatar's death, but most of the warriors then abandon it to serve individual captains and warlords. And then, of course, in Lord of the Night, Sahaal abandons his whole company to die anyway.

So it seems the 1st Company that Sahaal commands are not the Atramentar, or even Sevatar's men. I shall make a Sevatar, but I will not make a Sahaal.

And, forgive me for asking, but are we likely to see any of 10th Co? Or Sevatar perhaps? Maybe "The Prophet of the Eighth Legion"?

Sevatar is an absolute certainty. Talos or Decimus? Maybe. I might start out with doing Malcharion though, just because his name is awesome.

with the lightening, I'd go with a watered down rich blue, like enchanted blue, followed by a really sharp and straight skull white. I'm gonna add some night lords to my black legion once I move onto auxiliary squads to mix out the dominant black legion motif. I'm thinking of going a little darker with them, starting from a black basecoat, rather than darkest blue.

also, the idea with the terminator is cool, but the arms don't really feel right, the details just seem off.

atramentar are just one of ADB's ideas, theres plenty of 'normal' night lords terminators to do not bound by his fluff. Mine are called the carpathian guard, for example.

Indeed, and I think he's aware of this. He made it abundantly clear that the Atramentar were those 1st Company elite loyal to Sevatar only, who split from the 1st Company after his death. Anyone else who replaced them (under Sahaal) or was outside that core group, was "just" 1st Company. He emphasized pretty hard that Sahaal was NOT Atramentar, even though he was 1st Company Captain, as they're not one in the same.

Also, pretty much everyone hated Sahaal. :D

Alright, so eBay came through! I only have Tyberos' body to test this out on, but I ordered some arms to see what he looks like.

DISCLAIMER: I did no cleaning of the parts in this whatsoever. Zero. Please excuse the roughness.

I'm rather pleased.

I will say that the power-fist arm looks a bit thin, though the other arm looks fine. I like the old-school look of the shoulder pads (the Crux will be replaced by a Nostraman Lion) and they evoke the ideas of Cataphracti Terminators without the gorget (which some terminators will be given, along with more old school helmet to match the below image.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fGFa0S9U6ss/TIKnA80ND5I/AAAAAAAAAII/6ij6e3wLFQY/s1600/iron-hands-pre-heresy-terminator1.jpg

I think using the Tartaros shoulder pads evokes the same 'layered' look without adding too much bulk, like a lot of the pre-heresy should pads I see.

Thoughts? The auction on 10 of these bad boys ends tomorrow!

Not an update as such but I've been slowly collecting the bits to really make this army what I want. The Forge World Horus Heresy news has slowed things do a little bit, but overall I only see it improving my plans. Oh, please Forge World, give me sculpted Night Lords shoulder pads that aren't Chaos-y! Please!

In the meantime, I decided I liked Tyberos' head enough to give it to all my Terminators...

Well, total switch around.

My wife and I have FINALLY bought a house (4 lost to bids and 80 looks later) and we'll be in by May! That means I'll finally have the space to work. In the mean time, that's allowed me to do some serious planning. I've decided to scrap the custom Terminators because I saw this image over at B&C...

The last book in the Soul Hunter series (Void Stalker I think) has really made this thread promising. Less movey, more paintey!

edit: I'm going through eBay looking at Termi legs, and the Justaerin look quite nice for Night Lords. They have these spikey areas on a quart of their leg (like one thigh, or one lower leg), which look quite usable for Night Lords imo without being extremely over the top.

I had some fun assembling things last night.

I've decided to use the Palatine Blade swords in a lot of cases because with the filigree removed, they actually look quite brutal - made for slicing and fine cuts... like skinning fallen enemies and whatnot. They also look quite aerodynamic and so fit on my Night Raptors well too. The head is from the Legion Praetors box, the body from the Legion Champion, and the right arm is from the MKIV command set.

I don't (as yet) but that's a really, really neat situation you have going there. Imagine how much they could sell that power armour for to some Spryers. ;)

Hmm, I've heard of those, but I never looked at them before (CSM rules). I agree, one of the cool things about Night Lords is that, in general, they want no part of Chaos. They're just power-armoured, steroid fed space bullies :D And despite how cool it would be, fielding anything more that even ONE Space Marine in Necromunda is, I think, serious overkill. Unless the idea is to butcher gangers, like I was planning to do with this scenario.

I spent tonight trying out various paint mixtures and Vallejo Air Colour sprays to try and find what combo to base my VIII Legion.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/670/22703051892_6b7ec46039_c.jpg

Sorry for the ack quality, but we're looking for colour here.

The one the left is deep purple. That's a black base coat with a few soft, thin airbrush coats of VAC Blue on him. If you're looking for Emperor's Children, you could do worse than hitting this with a couple of highlights and some gold!
The second one from the left is straight up VAC Deep Sea Blue on plastic. No primer. It took an extra coat to get him covered evenly. Very dark.
The second from the right is straight VAC Blue on plastic. Like the above, it took an extra pass.
The last one on the right... VAC Arctic Blue which is a metallic, but that's written fairly small on the bottle. He looks... Different. I don't really like it.

So - Thoughts? What should I run with? This will be my first big airbrush project.

I also accidentally base coated an Ultramarine thinking I could darken down the Army Paint Ultramarine Blue. You cannot. I'll probably paint him up just for fun.

I'd say one of the guys in the middle as a base colour but it's hard to say really, there are almost as many definitions on what's 'Midnight Blue" as there are Night Lord players so go with what you thinks is the best mix of looks and the amounts of coats you have to do brother

Anyway...

With the House Hyperion Knight Errant (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?397472-House-Hyperion-Knight-Errant) almost out of the way, I whipped out the airbrush, some carefully chosen Vallejo Model Air paints and decided to experiment, very roughly, to see if my planned method of doing some Night Lords would, in fact, work.

This might be the roughest I have EVER done for a model, but I was more concerned if my steps for the blue worked, and if it would still work with the red, white, and silver accents these guys will have will play nicely. All the details and colours were done with one brush, because I need to buy new ones.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/685/22093856814_cbbc5d5464_c.jpg
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/757/22703056052_e6ca34a564_c.jpg

Coat the model with Vallejo Model Air Imperial Blue (Closest to Kantor Blue in the Vallejo line) It looked a bit purple to me here, so I tried another model with a black undercoat and it just didn't look the same, so I proceeded on.
Once that dried, I sprayed DOWN from above with Vallejo Model Air Magic Blue for some soft, soft highlighting. These didn't blend very well at first.
Drakenhoff Nightshade all over. Everywhere. This really tied the two blues together, and made the parts that ended up being only Imperial Blue, a lot more blue, and less purple.
Blue highlights are Caledor Sky with another hit of Drakenhoff Nightshade on top. They're a bit thick on this test model, but I'm satisfied with the actual highlight.
Silver (Heresy Era) is Leadbelcher, Nuln Oil, and a highlight of Runefang steel.

I'm going to be brave and try this on an actual model tomorrow and get to painting some details. We'll see how that goes...

The lightning is a layer line of Caledor Sky, a layer of Lutheran Blue and then a fine detail line of Ulthuan Grey. I think it's worked out pretty well. The red on the pad is Mephiston Red, Nuln Oil wash, Evil Sunz Scarlet drybrush, then a Gryphon Sepia Wash, pure highlights of Evil Sunz Scarlet again, and then a final red wash to bring it together.

I think they're a good, decent standard for line-level troops. Haven't done a REAL detail pass or anything yet, but I'm okay with them right now. Both took me about 90 minutes from start to present level of paint. It should be able to make this my assembly-line process pretty easily.

I need your advice though! What colour should I do the weapons?!

Boring an answer as it is, I think black is the best choice (with chrome details).
I think the standard metallic NL weapons might be a little overkill with the choice of armour trim you have gone for, but you could make it a different shade I guess.

Deep red might be interesting though . . .;)

Inquisitor Engel
03-11-2015, 23:27
Definitely looking deep red actually. Can't get a great picture of the test right now though and I'm heading out of town tomorrow.

I did spend today packing and doing some more assembly-line work on this squad. Blues, metals, and reds have all been done now (except for the red on the weapons). Adding a splash of gold here and there (skulls especially, as well as some studs and other small spots) has helped widen the colour palette as well.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/742/22772731701_2a5eec2373_c.jpg

If I'd have known what a pain in the ass MKII and III marines were to paint, I'd have stuck to IV, V and VI. :p

I do still need to do the white for the skulls, but that will require a trip to the hobby store for a fresh pot after I get back.

I also went through this entire log and replaced and repaired all the image links so EVERYTHING should work now if anyone is interested. I had to use a mix of imgur and Flickr, but hopefully this holds.

Ta-Da! They're DONE!

I'm using the Raptor helmets on Sergeants as a mark of rank. I decided to go for a bleached look on the bone attached to them, rather than fresh bone. Ups the contrast a bit since 30K NL don't have the gold trim.

Thanks to the FW NL decals (also picked up on my trip the other week) these guys are "Coffin + Rune" Squad, which translates to... something in Nostraman. Another squad will be Rune + Coffin, and so on.

I am painfully slow.

Nothing specifically Night Lords, but I took doing Sigismund's base as an opportunity to do some Night Lords vehicle stuff

I did do some Kantor Blue base, Drakenhoff Nightshade overall, Nuln Oil in the dark spots, and some much, much harder, sharper Caledor Sky highlights than I do on the troopers. I like it.

I still need to order a sonic cleaner to fully clear out the airbrush before my next squad or character or whatever (possibly Sevatar, haven't decided yet) but I'm pleased there's an element of progress to both the Fists and the Night Lords.

I just keep moving the paint pot for details.

Well, I'm off to GDC next week, and (like in my Imperial Fists log) decided I should finish my Night Lords squad before I took a week off.

Not bad for assembly-line painting. I'm pretty pleased with there results overall, and they're consistent with the other squad, who had less of a sequential thing going on. These guys happen to belong to "Rune + Hourglass" squad. I felt it spoke more towards bolter-armed space marines than any of the other symbols. A couple had to have "Rune + Hand" due to a lack of hourglass decals, but it works still.

I haven't based them as I have 200 32mm bases coming in the mail. I figured why not do it now before they're painting. I most definitely don't look forward to that process with my Fists, and I'm sure I'll need to do it at some point.

Anyway, off to California!

Ha!

If you want to see how good I am at sticking to it, look at the dates on this log and my others. ;)

I'm actually getting quite a bit more productive of late, and I've done that generally by switching off between armies. I've bounced between Imperial Fists and Night Lords and it's worked really well. I'll be running out of Fists relatively soon, so at that point it'll be Eldar and Night Lords. It means I'm not getting worn out by any individual part of the process, which really, really helps.

For some reason the guy on the front left ended up extra shiny after the wash. Unsure what happened, as everyone else had their stuff from the same pot and turned out fine. I've no doubt the matte varnish will deal with it though, but anyone got advice on how to avoid it in the future?

gurmec
30-05-2016, 06:58
Yeah this has happened me a time or two. The solution is lahmian medium. A coat of that over the top sorts it out. Just ensure that when thinning your shades you use the medium. I've actually started using it to thin all my paints now and only use water to wash my brush.
As a night lords fan, absolutely loving this by the way. Great work.

And I'm back! Thanks for the words of encouragement in the slump! It always helps, even if I don't do incremental progress posts between!

I had hoped to have this pictures up before I went to LA for E3, but a lack of basing materials got in the way.

On with the show!

http://i.imgur.com/vEDkYy5.jpg

Squad Red-Coffin-White-Rune ready for duty!

Again, no flesh ornamentations. Those sorts of things take too much time in the middle of battle when you could be yelling "BOO!" from dark corners and scaring the enemy. There will be plenty of time for skinning AFTER the battle.

http://i.imgur.com/Id0yWUt.jpg

The sergeant turned out really nicely overall. One of the power claws snapped off, but I'll replace that eventually. Love the way his bone mask turned out and using the winged helmets to denote rank has really worked out for me overall. The guy on the left was the overly shiny guy above, and the matte varnish worked out great.

The MKVI I really like due to the way the shade worked on him. The shoulder pad is one of the old metal Chaos Night Lords pads, with the trim filed down.

http://i.imgur.com/r9V3iry.jpg

I tried to vary things up with the MKIII suits in this squad. I hate painting them. So many niggle details and fine lines that just snap off with the slightest bit of pressure. Bleh. I like the varied faces. Works overall since there are more than one or two in this particular squad.

http://i.imgur.com/HsO6xrN.jpg

The skull mask might be one of my favourites. Adding his squad markings either side of the legion symbol (same for the guy on the right) varies things up nice

http://i.imgur.com/Beg3s43.jpg

The skull guy is in here again, as is the guy on the left, but I change my photo lineup mid-shoot. The MKIII guy's lighting on the faceplate is OKAY, but I don't think I'll be using it again. The guy with the meltabomb was my test model for this unit. His lightning I really enjoy.

That's all for now! Three whole squads completed so far!

Anyway, this will be my last Night Lords unit while I do a couple of my Saim-Hann Eldar to vary things up. Once I've done a couple of them, I'll probably do a vehicle for the Night Lords. Maybe the Sicaran.

It's a long, slow road ahead for me. I'm not the fastest painter, but man it does feel good to be making SOME progress. Once I've clear my massive, massive backlog, it'll be paint-then-buy for quite some time. No more bulk purchases for me! (I swear!)

Nice work! Your Night Lords continue to be an inspiration

That's quite the compliment! I'm just making things up as I go along. ;)

The Terror Squad is complete! Unlike the Seeker Squad, whose recon-like nature befits the black weapons. I ended up choosing Volkite Cavaliers for this squad and leaving off the squad markings (except on the sergeant) so that they can slot into a 10-man 40k CSM squad as a counts-as special weapon since Volkites have no 40k equivalent. Of course, because I'm WYSIWYG they'd all count as the same special weapon.

https://i.imgur.com/it81BBr.png

I also chose to make the bone parts here actually bone instead of white like on the other squad sergeants, as if any squad is KEEPING bone on their armour fresh, versus bleaching, it's a Terror Squad.

https://i.imgur.com/OKFHgpY.png

I'm a big fan of the lightning on this one.

https://i.imgur.com/T3S6ZjH.png

More gold accents to showcase the "veteran" nature of the squad, but not enough to make them look 40k.

So yeah, I'm really pleased, and making MUCH faster progress with this army than I expected. Next up will probably be the Destroyer Squad, but it's the Eldar's turn now. :)
