My Chaos IW army has reached up over 2500 points now and i am looking for ways to expand it. Ive won 14 Night Lords with all the metal helmets and shoulder pads and 4 Night lord havocs on Ebay to add to my army and i was just wondering how feasible it is within the fluff and would it look good on the tabletop??

Theres a short story in the CSM dex about NL striking ahead of a Red corsairs army to cut lines of communication and take key objectives like spec ops do IRL, i am thinking this could be a sort of fluffy role for them in my army.

My only fear is that they will turn into a whole army.....

It's not a push, and I could see it happening. Though both Legions are quite paranoid and disdainful of other Space Marines, what does misery love? Company. :)

I haven't read any of the more recent NL fluff such as the ADB books, but they always used to be descried as quite mercenary in nature. It seems reasoanble that an Iron Warriors Warsmith might hire Night Lords as specialist stealth infiltrators.

I think expanding into a second force is always great, and if you're allowed to play them together without hose rules, just better!

(Personally, I'm still thinking about an Elder-Necron alliance, provided my group gets alliance rules in and I can afford a few Necron models; the fluff explaning the unlikely alliance is already there, in my head, ready to be written down in a quiet hour)

@Rogerio: Speaking as your regular opponent, I'd certainly have no problem facing a Night Lords/Iron Warriors, and I know the rest of the guys in our group of gamers wouldn't take issue either.

Good luck painting lightning bolts on them though! (And then my Archon will come along and cut them up again! ;))

Lightning is easy. Large small brush line of regal blue over the finished plate, followed by a smaller line of enchanted, followed by an even smaller line in Lightning blue, and then an even smaller line of extremely thin white and make it slightly more pronounced where the bolts intersect.

As to the fluff, I could see it short term working out, eventually the NL are going to move off on their own agenda though. Of all the Legions though I think they would work more willingly with IW and AL than any others possibly treating them with slightly less contempt.

The biggest stretch would be NL working together with word bearers as the NLs aren't all that devout. I think the other undivided legions are fluff-wise all fair-game.

Also, it's called Chaos. As long as you don't expect people to happily accept a permanent Slaanesh/Khorne allegiance (although I bet temporary stuff happened), I think it's all cool. :)

Yeah, it's not a push at all really. Warriors of different Legions have any number of reasons to ally themselves with those not of their own Legion ESPECIALLY if theirs is one of the fractured Legions like NL's, EC's and WE's.

Or you can do lazy man's lightning of Thin White over slightly thicker Ice blue. Depends on how good you are at painting.

I not saying it CAN'T happen, but I can't think of any fluff that has the IW and NL working together other than the Heresy, so I'd have to say no they wouldn't work together.

No biggie....I have one of all the original traitor legions in my army somehow. IF some whelp like Huron and his mob can secure the support of the night lords I see no reason why a big legion like the iron warriors can't get some night lords to fight besides them.

Would be cool to use the components to make a raptor squad or an infiltrating squad of chosen!!! I'm starting an IW army myself and in all the research I have done it seems the IW are practical above all things. If a warsmith needed infiltration specialists, I doubt he would hesitate to hire a warband of NL or AL.

Yeah i do love the NL, especially after reading the ADB novel "Night Haunter" i think thats the name of the first one?? i need to get my hands on the rest of them though!

Im starting off with just the one squad on NL and also got 4 heavy weapon havocs with NL bits on as well so could have a CSM squad/ Chosen unit and also have a unit of havocs or simply use them as heavy weapons for the chosen. I like using a unit of 5 chosen and giving them a Missile launcher or Lascannon and using their infiltrate to get them a good shooting position!!

Also got an unpainted rhino that could possibly find its way into a NL paint job...i can see 2 squads expanding into a small force though, which is worrying haha! I cant seem to resist csm!
